Android is not a windows based OS - it doesn't use a registry...its a Linux based OS. It is very different than a Windows system.
registry
I came from windows mobile as well so I'm not as advanced as I was in the winmo world but I think the screen sensitivity is determined by the kernal also a lot of settings are in the build prop
booo. oh well. Now to figure out what rom to use....any ideas? i always like having the latest and greatest. I'm a quickk learner I promise! I keep looking at the eclair rom but idk what to do...if its the same as the other roms where i just rename the zip file of eclair to update.zip and throw it on the memory card or if i need something else...

How can i change the os version that is shown when booting the device up? you know the one under the ipl/spl and gsm?
i don't know how to edit exactly, but im sure that done on the same base rom not on the sys or oem folders, because when you have 4.0.0.1 base rom and put sys and oem folders for another rom version on it, will show 4.0.0.1
about changing OS number and build you can find how to do it on wiki
It's done by hex-editing, but I can't tell you how. Perhaps someone else can shed some light on this.

C0rnholio got to the bottom of this in the Blackberry Connect hacking thread, post 152 here. Its really useful there as the blackberry connect software appears to be restricted to certain OS versions, but its a righteously heinous hack to pull off.
Anyone interested in modifying one of the wizard WM6 roms with this hack and posted the updated version? Another Rom builder was going to create a special BBC version of his ROM, but upgraded to another phone before he got to it....would be very useful to a small segment of the community!
hah finally worked it out...
Just about to test it, Put it this way...Get your IDA & ARM Assembly hats on lads because it isnt just plain ascii/unicode
Sorry for such a "noob" question, but how do you install "cab" files? Do you click on them when in active-sync or do you have to cut-n-paste them somewhere?
Just wondering because I wanted to install several programs in Vp's "add-on" list but not sure how? I tried clicking on one and it didn't do anything?
Just copy the cab to your device and then open your file explorer on your device, find the cab, and double click it. It's that simple
Read the wiki:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Hermes
And enjoy your new toy
Moderator.... shouldn't this thread be locked? Not a WM6 related question...

Hi
U can install CAB files by two ways
1. Copy files to your device and double click
2. Download prgm CabViaSync u can directly install it form your desktop
http://www.modaco.com/Vista-WMDC-compatible-CAB-t248516.html
copy the cab file into your device itself ,that's all and double click on it on ppc
To copy it ,connect your device ,when activesync sync , u can click on explore button ,it will open ur device then just copy and paste
Where do you copy it to on the device? The Program menu? And then click on it from there?
I posted it here because I'm using WM6 although it's the same I gather with WM5. Sorry if it's in the wrong thread.
Thanks everyone. I'll try it.
Again, sorry if this is in the wrong thread.
dude, just copy it to say your storage card, go to file explorer, then to your storage card and click n it. lol..it's amazing, u know how to upgrade to WM6 but you dont know how to install a .cab file? lol .. wow.

THIS CANT BE IN THE WRONG THREAD YOU THARTED THE THREAD!! LOL
this is funny
Im not trying to be an ass to who-ever started this thread or the participants but this has to be the funniest question I have ever read on here. Why? because its a developers web site for test and mods and you made it here so far without even opening a cab file. thats like growing up, standing and getting food from the cubbards and then still not knowing how to open the fridge...i say this with humour not arrogance.
Is this thread serious or a joke?
I can't tell...
If it's serious, someone needs to gently put down the PPC and pick up a Nokia... more their speed.

Sorry man, I'm the bonehead. I make a living working on cars - not phones! And YES, I made it this far loading roms and not having to do anything with cabs!
The reason I'm wandering around the "developers" website is because I get the best answers here.
I'm sure if things were reversed, and you were rebuilding a "hemi" you *might* ask a silly question too.
So... before you work on the "hemi", don't you read the service manual first or do you just post the question hemi.mechanics.com?
I think that's why some people are flaming you for this question...
It's like saying you rebuilt the engine but you don't know how to add oil.
This reply is in no disrespect to you....

Thnx for the reply but i have got another question, IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I CAN INSTALL ANY SOFTWARE USING .CAB FILE AND THEN REMOVE ITS ENTRY FROM THE REMOVE PROGRAMS LIST WITHOUT REMOVING THE SOFTWARE? Thnx in advance.
While I haven't used this option, with WinCE CAB Manager you can specify when you create a CAB that the CAB can't be uninstalled after its installed. I'm not sure if the cab will show up in the remove program list then or not.
Basically the remove cab list is registry entries, but I'd be very careful trying to change any of that by hand as you could screw something up and cause the user to have to hard reset their device.
So why would you want to install something and Hide it from the user? Some of your questions (in various threads) has me a little concerned about what you are trying to do.

Don't be concerned my frnd, im not using it to make any virus or something. i wanted to put TouchFLo on my Extended ROM and if the version of HTC Cube i have, is uninstalled after installation it removes your touch ability. I guess it answers your question. And by the way im not a Hacker kind of guy. thnx.

Thankyou soooo much
First of all I apologize if this is in the wrong place , but I couldnt find a solution anywhere on the web and I have seen so many awesome xda developers here and used many of the cooked roms so I thought Id give it a shot
Does anyone know how to secure a cab file? So if you develop a Windows Mobile 6 application and you want to make sure that they can only install the cab on one device and force them to enter a registration code how do you go about doing that?
I'm just wanting to change up some font colors and grahics on a rom I have. I was told Eclipse was the way to go, so I set up an Android Dev machine with all the plugins and recommended tools. Now what?
Since no one is willing or able to help, could someone or a Dev be so kind to get me the correct xml file that will change the top title bar fonts to white instead of black. I will put the file in the rom and re-sign it myself.
I am by no means any good at theming, I fail pretty hard, but this might help. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=535630
Also, maybe try posting in the theme forum. Good luck.
There are different xml files for different stuff. Check out colorchange app. It works with cyanogen to change all stuff. Much easier that the xml stuff we used to have to do. Pm me if you have any specific questions.
If you search for colorchange or even posts by me you will find it. When I turn my pc on later I will post a link if required.
Thanks for the info mates (MontAlbert and bcrook). I will check out the colorchange app. One day I will find some write ups on Elclipse and android rom programming. Will let you know how the app worked out, MontAlbert.

You probably want to ask these questions in the Android dev group(s) on Google groups. The digests I get every day indicate there is a lot of activity there.
