is it possible??? - JASJAR, XDA Exec, MDA Pro ROM Development

Hi Guys
I've got a questions to all you guys who cook the roms as I don't and I think of my self as a strict end user of the HTC devices.
It is possible for you to create a nice and simple rom that will be ready to go after flashing and will contain a few things that I will alow my self to point out below:
- weather plugin on today screen (in WM6.1 or 6.5)
- a web browser that will display flash and all the rich content on the websites including youtube, vimeo etc
- favorite contacts with photos
- a set of nice games
- divix player with all the plugins
- google maps
- facebook, twiter etc
- MS office
- pdf reader
I think all those above are essential for any rom to be useful
Rom like this wold be ideal for people like me who just want to use it not constantly looking for all the bits and bobs to make it working. Call it whatever you want but this is why HTC don't appeal to that many people which is sad really coz it is a damn good piece of equipment.
Well i hope someone will get interested and maybe some of you guys will create rom like this for everyday user. and don't forget to make the theme sleek and sexy so my girlfriend will be jealous that her iphone can't look like this
Thank you

WELL everyone have there own preferences and when cooking rom the cheif have to think of everyone as a whole... so some might not want weather, or some might not need divx player or browser with flash or some one might use igo instead of google map.... so in short if you want you can install other app to get all of the above..., and just search this forum and you should get all of the above app....
Cheers

You might think those things are essential, but others may disagree. The best solution to your request is to flash an ultra-vanilla ROM and install everything as .CABs. For example, Facebook and FIM are both available as .CABS, as well as Google Maps. TCPMP plays my divx files and handles other formats very well indeed. Office and PDF readers are uncluded with quite a few ROMs already. Twitter widget came as part of SPB MobileShell, I don't use Twitter, but I am sure it works fine and is most likely available as a .CAB for a separate install.
Try something with lots of program memory available that includes only basics, each proper ROM will come with the list of things included and screenshots, so you can decide whether you want one.
After awhile, like most of us, you will have a small collection (or large) of .CABs you find absolutely necessary, my suggestion is to store them all on your SD card, that way if you flash ROMs frequently everything you need will be available within a few clicks.
Or.... you can ask nicely, donate to our fine chefs and get someone to create a ROM for you....

AHA! So it's a competition...

Ah! you are totally right about all the cabs ect. honestly I was going to do this but here is a problem. to find what I need is almost imposible, half of the download links doesn't work some of the stuff is not on the forum. It would be nice to have a ftp server where all the cabs and roms could be stored. Also is hard to find a 'plain' rom on which I could install the rest. It is to much of all this themes plugins ect and without proper ftp catalouge/folder filing system is just taking too much time That's why I 've asked coz whoever is actually cooking roms already have all that cabs and plugins on his/their computers nicely sorted But if there is no other option i will start building my own colection.

btw could u post a link to the facebook cab. It is inc in tomals 8.10 ver i can't find it plz help

Here you go.

Or... you can learn to use one of the kitchens provided by our chefs and create your own ROM...
You are not looking hard enough - simple basic ROMs are available, they come with no plug-ins or themes, FTP is also available, while you can look for .CABs you need in corresponding threads or use Search function.

Yeah agree, people just want to ask and ask to everybody supply their needs, but they don´t really do a research or donate or help in anyway.
This is nothing personal to anyone, just what I´ve seen along this years on this great site!

How would you guys like a Bugtracker?

I'm currently working on a Bugtracker for the xda-developers (my own project - wasn't asked by anybody)
The idea behind it is to allow:
The Developers to see what bugs are outstanding
The user to submit their problems
The curious to see which ROM has less bugs
The n00bs to do research before asking questions (and have more places to spam)
I'm not planning to replace the forums, I just want to make an extra tool that can be used along side the forums - but is neater for bug reporting
Feel free to post your thoughts on if you like it (and so what should be included) or if you don't like it (and so what should replace it, if anything)
Thanks!
Hey, that's very nice.
But.. Are we talking about a new website? or just a new thread?

Entirely new website.
It will be hosted on my http://www.vidmes.com webserver
i voted approving the bugtracker but i like the idea of all the information about universal development being centralized in one only location.
so, i think it would be interesting to keep it in this forum.
It's ok, we'll just have a sticky thread that has a link to TehPenguin's site.
I vote you go for it TehPenguin.

Well, I've done some tentative work on it - and its looking good (if a little bare - I'm a software developer, not a web designer )
I'm a little busy this week, so its going to be about 2 weeks before I announce the link for the Beta
In the mean time, I'd like suggestions as to what people want in it
(Also, I notice one negative vote - I'd like to see their argument....)
Thanks!
Great Idea
I think mandatory information should be
1) Device Vendor...ie Imate, XDA etc
2) Radio stack in use
3) OS Rom in use
4) Third party software installed ( I know this list can be big, I myself have well over 100 apps as std) but is important for diagnosing bugs. Perhaps we could get an AppMgr listing from each system, not too hard to obtain.
You could also go overboard a little and have a PDA page, browseable from our Uni's so nothing graphics intensive or fancy. A simple login dialogue ( Can we port XDA-Dev user accounts?) once the user has logged in, they fill in a basic form with the bug description, click on submit and we could pull the information in points 1 to 4 above off of the device with a script.
Just my 50pence worth.
Great idea m8, hope it gets somewhere.............let me know if I can help with anything.
Cheers,
Beast

What I was planning to do with this is to have them describe a "Bug" in very generic terms as the Bug's description. Then they are required to add a comment (which other people may add) - this comment would have a "template" which would have things such as vendor, radio (I didn't actually think of this one), etc...

Some good ideas but....
I can't actually get info from the xda-developer's forums database - this may be a security risk on their behalf and would require far to much messing around to organise (as much as I would like to do it)
You will be able to view the page on your PDA's - its _very_ basic and I'll try to keep it xHTML complaint and do fanciness with CSS (though at the moment it does use some table hax)
Pulling info out of the PDA is virtually impossible (unless I build an app for the PDA's.... maybe later ) since the pda only tells me what browser version it is using
Either way - these are the things I like to see - Ideas!!!!
Keep them coming!

I totally agree with DaVince, having a bug tracking website would be cool and having a link directly to the site via xda-developers is a good idea. Keeping everything centralised and available for use by everyone who uses xda-developers.

Hi TehPenguin,
Surely we can run a JScript or Vbs through the PPC Browser to get the required data from the Reg, only a couple of RegReads!
Just another thought............... I prefer accurate information, the reg is less likely to make mistakes than a user!! (No offence intended to anyone)

Bugtracker
Hi,
Would be great to have this.
Looking forward

Why not use one of the many bugtrackers already out there? I prefer Flyspray (http://www.flyspray.org/) since it's as mighty as Mantis, but more Web 2.0 ... and you should be able to browse it on your PPC, although I don't think anybody really wants this ...
Cheers,
-mARKUS
P.S.: As for getting registry stuff through the PPC ... I doubt you can read out the registry by a JavaScript running on the page itself. Also there are many geeks out there who use Resco so they could easily export a .reg-file and attach it to the report.

I've had a look at at a number of bug reporting systems - the problem with them is that I'd have to end up customising it quite a bit anyway. For instance, they are typically designed for one program, possibly with options to support different parts\plug-ins for these programs. My design involves having multiple "Devices" each with multiple "ROMs", which may be deprecated, and each of these ROMs have multiple bugs - thats a couple more levels of complexity than the average bug tracker can handle.
Although they are more "Web 2.0" the Javasript\other fanciness would make it difficult to view on a PDA. Personally I prefer the old style Web 1.0 and a PHP back end
The other advantage of me making it is that you guys can have, almost, anything you want - and it should be done as soon as I have time, seeing as I know the code intimately.
And the point I really like - I love coding

Exporting a reg file is the only possibility. Due to "security" problems, no script can actually see the registry of the device (or your PC for that matter), except what is in the "User Agent" key.
I'll put it on the "TODO" list to make a .NET program that automatically dumps your settings and creates a bug report
Given time, this can become quite beautiful. And time is now something that I will have - since I'm on holidays for the next few weeks!! (Yay for no more exams!!)
The alpha version is almost finished
I'll put a link up onto WM-Gurus for the final testing stage of the Alpha and see how it goes
Once the Alpha is complete (ie not too buggy) I'll put the link for the Beta here
Enjoy!
this is really a great idea.
i hope all goes well...
thanks to all!
Okay,

Username "dev" password "dev" (Access level - developer)
Username "admin" password "password" (Access level - administrator)
PLEASE NOTE: At the end of the Alpha stage, ALL DATA WILL BE CLEARED FROM THE DATABASE!
What I need people to do:
Look for bugs
Write the Help\FAQ sections
Ask me questions so I can write the Help\FAQ sections
See what else is needed
Enjoy!!

Possible new website. Checking for interest.

These forums are great but I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a website for mainly wm5 and wm6 devices. I'll just list a few things I'd like to have on it and hopefully get enough good feedback and ideas that will inspire me to actually design the website.
- Overview of roms for various devices. Including user reviews, screenshots, and some detailed stats on the roms such as memory after a fresh flash. (will probably need help getting those numbers as I don't have access to all the phones)
- Downloads for roms (only if uploaded by the author) otherwise, links to the respective threads here.
- Downloads, reviews, screenshots, ect of popular software. Mostly freeware.
- Guides on things such as skinning programs like S2U2, rlToday, Wisbar, ect
- Skinning sections, upload/download skins for above. Ratings ect.
- Icon packs? If anyone wants to create and upload their own icons to share?
I'm only going to have more ideas as I begin this project but I imagine that I may need some help. Also, I would like to do as much as possible with the developers and with their permission.
No actual work has been started yet. Just been thinking it would be nice to have all of this on one website or at least organized information and links all in one place.
XDA THE BEST!!!!
I run a site personally, www.PocketPC-Live.com but the strength of inteligent people here who cook ROMs, release many small and usefull utilities make this place the best!
Regards,
Carty..

SQL CE 3.5

I realy have no clue why the chiefs cook SQL server in their rom's
Or are we all DBA's???
...Yes...?
There are some apps that require it to function properly, and it's also installed by default with the shipped ROMs provided by HTC and various phone Operators.
If you don't like it, speak to the chef, or read my sig for how to cook your own.

Alex, just loaded your v5lite, love it ! So happy I sent a donation....
This was actually my 1 burning question (everything else is working perfectly), why this app... can you give 1 or 2 examples of what apps depend on it ?
I can't think of any specific examples of the top of my head, but think collection apps with large databases of mp3s, records, dvds, comics or whatever... Much easier to use a SQL query than to write your own search...
BTW, happy to hear you're enjoying my ROMs, thanks so much for the donation!

Ahhh ! maybe windows media player and the like... makes sense...

Website to consolidate icons, tweaks, mods, etc. Assistance needed.

I posted this over on PPCGeeks, but I thought I would post here to get more exposure and input. Here is the ppcgeeks thread. http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=53230
Okay, I've brought this up elsewhere, and I guess it's time to create a new thread and get this going. I've seen so many different threads with different tweaks, top icons, TF3D icons, Windows themes, Manilla themes, etc... and I also notice some people try to combine them into one post (which is very difficult, and still results in the addition of other posts/threads).
Anyways, something I've been wanting to see done for a long time is to be able to go to a webpage, pick and choose with pictures what we want on our phone, and download and install them. Rather than having people search to find several thread results, they can just go to one website, and view up to date info.
First example I will use is the top icons for the Touch Pro. I see several threads (3 of which I personally noticed to be predominately popular - http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=49827, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437307, and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=437420). These threads are very long (one of which with 1,800+ posts). What I would like to do is have people who create icons submit their icons to this website (I don't have a name for it yet), and people can go there to see & download their work. All original work will be credited appropriately, and can also have a "donate" button as such. People can still post their work on the forums, but they can say it's been submitted to "the website", and people can visit "the website" to download.
What I've noticed is some people on the iPhone community have such things as Installer Apps, which is a compilation of various applications ready to be downloaded and installed to the device. This includes games, apps, icons, etc...
What I would like to ask is for some assistance from willing volunteers (you don't have to commit your time, but any help is appreciated). Maybe suggest ideas of what can be incorporated, gather information to be added to the site, etc... I do have a full time job, and I will be doing this on my own personal time as a way to give back to the community I've been a part of for 2 years.
I have some basic HTML skills, and I'm pretty computer savvy, but any help is appreciated. With that, I'll open this thread to any inspirational ideas and discussion.
Thanks, and let's make this a better community for everyone!

That site is awesome but it is over run with spam. I contacted the webmaster with some basic spam-fighting tactics. That site has a REALLY good foundation and is a great idea.
I'm pretty good with websites. I code all my html, php, SQL etc by hand in notepad. My site, http://miiwiichat.com is a chat room site for Nintendo Wii users. The site allows user submissions of articles, reader feedback, admin/mod pages, CAPTCHAs, lots of SPAM deterrent.
I don't have the time to code up a whole site, but I can help out.
@nhvoltagenh - Isn't your website a little ironic? A site dedicated for Windows Mobile graphics with a Apple OSX theme. lol. Don't worry, I like the glassy look and feel of OSX too.

Please Help out a Newbie -

Hi guys im new to the forum and new to winmo. I recently purchased an HTC touch pro from verizon, and contrary to most reviews I like it so far. Anyway I need to do quite a few things, and dont know where to get started.
I need to:
- Update the phone (if i install a new ROM will this update the phone?) If not how/where do i get the updates?
- Install a new ROM - do i need to do this? what does it do which one and where?
- I need a youtube app - where/which?
- I would like any web browsers you think are better then opera 9.5 ( I heard Fennic was fast?)
- I also need step by step instructions to doing all of this please. sorry
PS: Do i need to install the software that comes with phone? if I do, or if I do any of the above, doese it waver the 30 day trial period?
Thanks for any help! sorry its so much!

First off - Why do you feel you have to install a new ROM - you say you are happy with the device. Are you saying this because many people here are flashing different ROM's to their devices so you think you should. You just got your device - you should really learn how to use it first and figure out what it can do for you. Afterwards if you feel you want to flash a new ROM, than the ROM you choose is based on your needs. Follow the advice already given to you and start reading (LOTS) If you don't you might kill your device before really getting to enjoy it.
Opera is a good browser, I have used it - but I am now using skyfire. I just find it quicker. Haven't used Fennic so can't say how it compares
Youtube app - You can watch Youtube using Skyfire - but there are several Youtube apps available throughout these forums. If you do a simple search with Keywod "youtube" you should be able to find some rather easily. I don't use any though because I can watch them though Skyfire.
You probably won't find anyone giving you step by step instructions for unlocking, flashing and installing apps etc... you have already been pointed to where you need to go to learn this for yourself so do some reading. If you have questions after having done some reading about something specific, then ask and people will help but not many people will hold your hand through this.
If you try returning your device within the 30 days with a custom (non official) ROM - you might have some troubles. You will have to reflash your stock ROM back to your device and lock it again I think.
I don't know what you mean - Do I have to install software that comes with the phone. There are many apps available in this forum which you can easily install (many are in .cab format for easy installation. Some in .exe format requiring installation from your computer to your device though activesinc and some are just (place on your device and run it) Take into consideration which version of WM you have on your device (some are specific to WM 6 some to 6.1 and some to 5. Also take into consideration your screan. VGA or WVGA or QVGA etc.. as running an app with resolution different than your device and it will not display properly. If you install an app and it does not work properly or you just don't like it - go to settings - System - Remove programs and uninstall the app that way (works only for cabs or exe's installed) The others you just navigate to where you placed the app and delete it. You cannot delete applications hard coded into your ROM (from what I have read)
There is much to learn in these forums and it is up to you to do some reading and learning and figure out for yourself what it is you really want on your device. As you can see from my signature - I am still running my stock WM 6 ROM.
If I sound like I am being harsh I appologize; however, I must point you to this link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/faq.php
These are the rules and you need to read the rules - I notice that you created three seperate threads asking pretty much the same thing. This was the first thread started and was in the right section.
You created another one asking the exact same things after not having gotten the response you were looking for (bad move and a violation of the rules) and you created a third asking the same thing but not in quite as much detail (violation of the rules)
We are (most of us) are helpful community; however, you must do some work yourself to learn as much as you can and this will require lots and lots of reading. If you don't do the reading and learning for yourself (you just will never understand your device and what it is capable of and your next post will be titled
"Help - I bricked my device" - You don't want this and neither do we. Read and if you need clarification (because it is a lot to learn and can be confusing) then ask questions about your specific uncertainties. We will be glad to help (except I can't help with flashing ROM's because I havn't ever done it yet) lol
Good luck and enjoy your new device
thanks for all the help man, i should have done more research, the wiki is kinda confusing to me though and i wasnt sure of the different procedures to flashing etc. sorry. One question though, I was looking at downloading a pack of apps from bwone.com called the bowman pack pro, i cant really find much info on it, besides the apps it contains and therefor am unsure of how to install it.

I checked out the website you mentioned and checked out hte Bowman pack pro - Sorry that I really can't tell you much about it or the apps included; however, if it is completely free - give it a shot - it is probably a cab install which is easy enough to install and uninstall. If it is not free or only trial version then use the search function under your name up top to try to find prorams which are equivelant but free on this site. You really should be able to find most things you need through this site. I don't want to discredit the website you mentioned. I have never seen it before so I will leave that at that. I know this site and there is much available for everyone here.
You want cool music players seach S2P or Mortplayer or TCPMP or the new Nitrogen player (all free) or core player (pay) all are really good in my opinion.
TCPMP also plays videos really well (as does core player but Core Player has other codecs I think) There is a special version of TCPMP to run on your device I believe - Use search above.
Check out development and hacking section of this forum for all your application needs. Apps do not have to be designed specifically for your device as I have already mentioned above.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=260
This is link to Development and hacking section where you will find most of the apps and ROMS developed for all devices - Remember ROMS are device specific - Apps are not device specific in general - Check out apps that interest you and read the developers description and program details - It should tell you everything you need to know. Read also throughout the thread to see what others say about the program - How it runs on their devices, bugs found, fixes etc....
Like already said before - There is a lot of reading to do - This is a reading forum but it will allow you to enjoy your device to the max.....
Good luck.
