Encrypted storage card on a phone with a broken screen - General Questions and Answers

Right.
I have two phones, a HTC Hermes and a HTC Touch Pro.
The HTC Touch Pro works fine, and was brought to replace the Hermes. The Hermes had a broken screen, which I replaced, and now has a white screen.
Now the problem is, there was a storage card in the Hermes, which was encrypted. This is still encrypted, and as such I need to copy the files off it when it is in the Hermes. But what I am 95% sure is the password for the Hermes is not unlocking it at the point where I am pretty certain it is asking for the password on the device (the box saying the device is locked has popped up).
I can not currently move any files off the device or storage card when it is in the Hermes. Solutions I have thought of:
1) Copy the hashed password from the Touch profile, if I set that password to what it was on the Hermes. (Won't work if there is a seed, and don't know how to use the config files for WMDC.)
2) Somehow get around the password protection to copy the files off the device or remove the password. (Haven't been able to so far)
3) Send the password from the computer instead of entering on the computer, as I think it must be an input error I can't see due to the broken screen. (Don't know how).
So, any advice people?
Robert

Assuming you have working Active Sync try this My Mobiler. It will let you see your Hermes screen on your PC, and all inputs can be made with your desktop keyboard.

SPV M2000 password problem

Now I know what you're gonna say - hard reset, but just bear with me.
I set a password to stop the kids messing with the PDA.
Then I wanted to use my contract Orange SIM card temporarily instead of my PAYG SIM - it's cheaper to surf that way.
Sooo, I turned off the M2000 and inserted my contract SIM. When I turned it back on, I was prompted for the password, but I now do not have the keyboard icon bottom right of screen and I only ever used my touch screen to enter it.
I can enter via the keyboard, but I keep getting it wrong as I'm not really sure which keys come up as default CAPS lock on and how to use the Lock Fn key - ie: does it stay on for 1 key press then default back or do you have to turn it off again....similarly with Shift, CAPS, etc.
I've backed up my important data via ActiveSync, which prompts me for a password. So I've browsed the device and copied across the stuff I need...apart from program installs and the like.
So, this is how my password is structured: Abcd1efghij
To explain: a capital first letter, 3 lower case letters, a number, 6 lower case letters.
Any thoughts?
Boing for the monday morning types!!
Remote Controller
You poor thing! Try connecting with ActiveSync, and using the remote control program attached (rCE) to use your PC to enter the password.

Serious help needed

hi all.
I am in serious trouble and i need help. i realized i did not have outlook, thus my contacts are all gone.
I had tried to update my software earlier by installing some .cab file. It was a file for my HTC home. The installation was 'successful', however after i did a reset ( they prompt me to ) i could not boot up my phone. It get hanged once it got to my wallpaper, and i cant tap or press anything. The htc home screen also does not come out.
=(
any kind souls?
So something is hanging right after windows boots... did you try to install HTC Home to a storage card? Try booting with the storage card out.
thanks for the prompt reply. i tried, however it never seems to work. I am using a HTC TYTN ii. running on windows 6.1
I did install it on a storage card. i tried means like switching on without memory card, sim card and did a million resets, but it doesnt seem to work.. =(
Actually i install the HTC Home was because the message counter on the HTC Home got screwed up. it showed 1 unread no although i had all messages read. but anyway, for now, tht's not my main concern.. =(
thanks all in advance ..
I guess I do not understand all of your issues besides the freezing at boot.
A hard reset should be an option, if you're ok with that... and then for the future, use sprite and pim backup to make sure you don't lose too much data.
Try searching the forum for threads like http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=320689
What caused you to lose your contacts?
my contacts are all saved in the phone, and it wasnt back up cause i am not using microsoft outlook.. and lets say i want to do a hard reset, how to do it?
and how do i do a soft reset with my phone.
Is there anyway that i can actually do a SAFE mode boot up? but my phone keeps getting hanged at start up. i dunno if its because it cant bring up a pin enter mode where I need to key in my pin each time i boot up.
0) What version of ROM were you using?
HTC TYTN ii
1) Applications installed when it happened
HTC HOME (old version ) i d/led and used HTC Diamond home, then it got screwed up cause the unread messages kept showing 1, although all messages were read. i thus wanted to reinstall the HTC home.
2) Radio ROM version (2.19.21, 2.47.21, etc...)
NONE
3) Device model (dopod 818, imate etc...)
HTC TYTN II
4) Device version (G3 or G4)
Windows 6.1?
5) How long it was since last hard reset (1 day,6 hours, etc..)
I never did a hard reset. how do i do it
6) Approx how many soft resets you already made (1-5, 5-10 10-15, etc...)
Soft refers to poking the reset button, would be more than 20 times after this issue
7) Approx how many shutdowns you already made (holding power button for 4+ seconds)
more than 10 times.
8) any other significant info you think will help:
My contacts are not saved syn with my com as i do not have windows outlook.
9) Do you have the HTC Homeplug today plugin enabled?
10) have you populated your PIM apps via pimbackup or via activesync?
11) Do you have the "HTC_default" today theme enabled?
yes.
for now, i cant boot up. the screen will hang at my wallpaper. i cant seem to press or click anything after that. My pin start up prompt does not apear too. please help =(
depressed ivy.
Sorry, but I'm pretty sure you need an app to use safe mode. You might need to loose your contacts, but don't give up... research and you might find an answer.
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=The%20Safe%20Mode%20Bible
And if you've already tried booting without a sim and storage card, you might need to hard reset, which is easy enough after reading the wiki.
e.g. press both softkeys while resetting, or you could even flash a new rom via sd card by naming the .nbh file KAISIMG.nbh and putting it on your storage card root directory.
Read the wiki before you make any decisions and good luck, good news is your phone sounds like it's fine, just install a safe mode program next time.
Hi. I did research like wht you adviced, i managed to log into bootloader mode, i downloaded MTTY program and got my phone to the USB mode. I like to ask the following:
1) can i retrieve and save my contacts as i saved them all in my phone and none in my sim card?
2) Wht can i do next as I'm badly stuck at the HTC home page with only my wallpaper, i cant click on any buttons.
Thanks in advance to all.
I really hope that some GURUs here are able to help solve my terrible situation and i would really appreciate it. My contacts are all save in the phone and i need some help in retrieving it.
Thanks all.

At what exactly point does it freeze?
What is your radio version, it should appear after you turn on the device in red letters on the bottom right.
What is your SPL Version, you should be able to see it from the bootloader?
Dave
Hello friend. When I suggested research, I meant things like this...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=2732337
I found this thread by clicking search in the top right to use google, and typed "save contacts" which if you've gone into MTTY research (be careful by the way) then you might be able to backup your data.
MY SPL : 3.29.0000
MY radio: 1.65.16.25
When i boot up, i suppose to have some password protect, to enter my pin before there is reception and stuff. For now, I can only see my wallpaper, the start button, contacts and calander buttons. However i cant touch on anything, it just simply hangs there.
SIM card and memory card are off. I tried SYNC, but it says cannot detect device.

By "SYNC" you mean active sync? Try an Actice sync re-install, maybe?
Sounds like this protect stuff is beggared.

i meant active sync, it says it cant detect my device. Is there anyway from MTTY, i cant retrieve my contacts?
All this actually happen after i installed .cab file the other day, and the installation was fine and i was prompt to restart. It hanged after that till date. sigh =( I'm desperate.
GURUs,
I cant get my device to go any further than hanging right at the wallpaper of HTC Home, the usb doenst recognize my device, so i cant enter or do any thing.
I just wish to retrieve my contacts now, and do a hard reset on my phone.
Thanks.
If you never saved your contacts from and to your sim card without any kind of backup from outlook or pim, etc. you might be ****e out of luck. Gone from a ****ty samsung to a equally ****ty razr, hermes, and now kaiser with the same sim...Always copy your contacts to the sim; or at least a Backup folder on your desktop or lap. flashing erases the main memory, which of course includes contacts. That's why we have a program called sim manager, to backup contacts everytime we erase our systems. Hope you find a workaround though, as a former Iphone owner, reinputting your contacts is a giant *****
sigh.. does tht means i'm so dead now? I did ever did a PPCPimBackup, but its stored in the phone memory too? any sort of help you can assist?

Possibly, I've tried to get hold of someone who might know, but it's looking grim.
Storage Card backups and Active Sync are the best way to backup.

[Q] Backup device, Broken Touchscreen, Device stuck in HDD mode not activesync.

Hi XDA experts.
I have found myself in a bit of a quandry.
My HTC Ignito touchscreen failed while I was on holiday. ( no entry possible at all =-(
I just go back, and have been trying to backup the phone.
I have read all the threads I can find on the subject, and tried to install EveryWAN and Mymobilier software. The problem I have is that the device is stuck in HDD mode, as I set it to go to that mode automatically ( with hindsight a stupid move......)
Therefore EveryWan and MyMobiler will not connect to the phone.
I want to backup my contacts and download the holiday pictures.
I have seen some mention of adding a file to folder 2577 on the HDD to autorun, is it possible to use this trick to set the device to activesync ?
I am a programmer by trade, so dont be afraid to suggest something complicated and off the wall, I will try anything to get my contacts back !
I have ordered a new HTC Desire to replace it, maybe there is a way to swap data across directly ?
I have been on to HTC Support, and they are out of ideas, they say there is no way to change the activesync mode remotely =-(
Looks like i am screwed =-(

[Q] There's GOT to be a more secure setup... right??

Spent most of today trying to figure out how to secure my data on tp2 with SD card. Here's my thoughts and conclusions:
I can implement windows encryption on the SD card... but that becomes a huge obstacle to flashing / hard-resets (encryption key cannot be exported and card becomes unreadable after hard-reset).
I can buy some encryption software, but my impression is that the few I have found are either way expensive or only encrypt SD card (and it seems there is no reliable option for changing the location of Outlook data storage - other than e-mail attachments - to the SD card).
But even if I find encryption software, what is to prevent someone from taking my phone and using WMDC to create a partnership and synch the contents from the phone to their desktop?
And then there is the locking of my phone: setting the phone to require a password upon startup is tolerable, but it gets old pretty fast when I have to type the password each time the phone has been inactive for 7 minutes, so I'm looking at pattern locking software (throttlelock) instead. (i.e. I require security upon startup and after 7 minutes of inactivity).
Anyone figured out how to address all these issues? Any other possible breaches in security I have not mentioned?
With Regards-
Sam
HTC TP2, T-Mobile 6.5 ROM, Vista Ultimate 64
The other problem with encryption is corruption (although not very common it does happen) Try taking a look at this list and you might also want to try this which is a free alternative, hope this helps and best of luck!
Thanks -
Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

[Resolved] [Q] Retrieve contacts with a Bad Digitizer and Screen Lock Code on Touch Pro 2 SOLVED

I have an HTC Touch Pro 2 that now has a bad digitizer, and I am unable to use any touch-required functions. I only wish to retrieve the contacts from the phone in a way that I can get them on a new phone, even if it just means re-entering them into a new device. I just do not have any back up of the contacts, and need to be able to access the list on the phone.
I cannot "slide to unlock", so I am unable to navigate the phone or install anything on the phone. When I connect to my PC with an SD card it will connect in Mass Storage mode, and I can access the SD card only (not the phone system files). If I remove the SD card, and attempt to connect with ActiveSync/Windows Mobile Device Center I am prompted to enter my screen lock code on the phone - which I cannot do because the digitizer is broken. I do know the lock code, if there is any way to enter it without using the touch screen.
I have been searching around quite a bit, and I found a program called MyMobiler that looks like it would work, if I could get past the lock code. I have also downloaded the Windows Mobile Developer Power Toys, which also is unable to connect to the phone until I can enter the screen lock code.
Just to clarify, I have thoroughly read over this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852189#9434585
Is there ANY way that I can get access to the phone long enough to even just physically read and re-enter my contacts? Being able to import them would be nice, but I just don't have any backup whatsoever. Thanks for your help.
****UPDATE****
Solution: By pressing 911 on the keyboard, the phone assumed I was trying to make an emergency phone call and brought up the pin pad. I backspaced the 911, and typed in my unlock code. Now I am into the phone, and I can use the keyboard to navigate, and I can transfer the contacts to the computer. So glad I figured this out, and I didn't need to pay anyone to fix it for me. Good luck to anyone with the same problem.
