Welcome to forums
Just place your desired ringtone in mp3 on windows or in windows/my documents/my ringtones
Good luck and enjoy!
Hi.

I don't have windows\my documents\my ringtones dir
I copy the file to the my documents\my ringtones\, windows, windows\rings

The OS needs WMP for ringtone (mp3, wma, aac, etc.) to work. And since it was deleted (and probably all registry related to it) then you need to make a "fix" for it (in a simple word, thought it's not that simple).
I'd like to help you to make that "fix" (and hope it will works) but currently I'm so far away from home. Or you can search tutorial for building custom rom, find & download a rom kitchen, and try to build your own rom.
HI!
Thanks
you can change ringtones in file explorer as normal "set as ringtone", but only WAV is supported
Look here(#38)http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3966104&highlight=change+ringtone#post3966104
Thanks nndzry
I try it
Sorry for the double post, but it's not working for me

I know where the folder of the phone ringer tones is (windows/rings), but can someone tell me where the folder for alarm sounds is (the sounds you get in the drop down list when you click on the bell icon under clock alarms)?
Yeah does somebody knows this .
im still looking for it
i cant wake up with the ringtones of my clock i want to set another song of my one ?
p.s sorry for my bad english im dutch
Read on another post that the alarm tones will only accept wav files, and that they're located in the windows folder (rather than the rings subfolder). Going to try this out by adding a wav tone to the folder to see if it shows up in the drop down. Anyone know a free & decent wav tone website? Googled a few but all seem pretty crappy.
Or you can turn your mp3 toe wav
but that uses almost 75 mb from mp3 to wav
you can use wma as well according to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=310961
tested and working
that might be better, then I can convert mp3s to wmas and keep an acceptable file size
thats great news
so i dont have to wake up with that anoying beep sounds hahaha
thnx
just tested it but it doesn't work it didnt play wma files
if got an htc touch cruise with Rom version 1.28.404.2 NLD with wm 6 profesional
so i dont know what i did wrong
got bepe's ROM WWE 0.67 and it ist working. (it's WM6.1)
I just converted mp3 to wma using 4U WMA MP3 Converter and pasted to \windows folder. File is in list and it is playing
yeah but i dont want to install an rom or something like that
just the normal one that came with the phone
so it is imposible for me 2 set another tone
hmm, WMA didn't work for me, dropped a file in the windows folder, doesn't show up in the alarm drop down

WMA didn't work for me either, WAV did show up in the drop down list but would reset to default setting when choosen. I had trimmed the WAV file down to 8 seconds before dropping it in the windows folder.
hi there,
i've got a samsung omnia with a cooked rom and everything worked for a month until 2 days ago when suddenly the ringtone for an incoming call has been changed (by something i dont know) to the wm default (which i can't hear!)
when i try to change it through the sound settings it switches back to the damned ringtone that i don't even have between the list of ringtones i can choose! it's called ring-WindowsMobile .wma
something could be in conflict with the audio settings because i cannot change ANY sound notify (sms, mms,ecc..). the difference between incoming call notify and the others is that the others notifies are still the same i choose before this "crash" but the incoming call notify has cahnged and cannot be changed back!
i also tried to install some software to administrate the audio settings but has not worked.....
what can i do?sorry for my english and the lenght of the message!
no ideas???
at least some tip to change the ringtone manually from the regisrty or kind of stuff please
all that "changer;" is, is a graphical interface for changing the ringtone. even if you did it manually it would change back with what ever was in conflict.
it could be a program u you installed or a bad flash.
I recomend a hard reset to fix the problem since by your description it sounds like it may have been a program you installed that screwed things up.
I came accross a similar problem to my old TyTN.. it seemed an audio player i installed associated all media files to it.. well that makes sence.. but.. when i assigned an mp3 as a ringtone the ringtone wouldnt play!
associating mp3s with windows media player fixed my problem! maybe something similar happened to you?
check it out.. hope it helps!

I
LOVE
YOU!
you avoided me to hardreset for such a problem like this!
it was resco audio recorder which screwed up the audio settings!
thanks a lot!
ps: when i use wmp or mortplayer to play an mp3 in "MY Storage" or in "My StorageCard" both programs return an error "could not find specified file" i think it's because of the space in the name of the folder which screw up the path..
how can i solve?

Heheh glad you solved it!!
i never use media player or mortplayer for my audio files.. i either use s2p or coreplayer!
dont know whats going wrong on your side :/
try using s2p and see if it returns the same problem! have u tried audio manager?
with audio manager its all ok
but if i set audio manager as default player for mp3 when i tap on a mp3 it opens audio manager with the last file played instead of the selected mp3 and the player stays on pause
anyway...i'll try s2p
thanks again!
thank............
Does somebody know how to force Leo to play ringtones with mp3 extension? I already added some mp3's to windows/rings folder, but system doesn't see them.
its probably easiest using the MP3 Trimmer on the phone under the "MULTIMEDIA" folder...
Put the mp3 file in the "My Documents"-folder in the root of the mobile, not on the SD-card.
That is to say:
root/My Documents/mp3file.mp3
This mp3-file will work for both ringtone and sms-tone.
Hiya!
I am very curious if my Random Ringtone app works on the Leo.
If anybody wants to try it that would be appreciated.
If it doesnt work I would of course make it work.
Thanks in advance...

Meery Nwe yaer!
I have a folder called "my ringtones" in my documents on the device (not the sd card). Try adding some mp3's there! Works for me! You also wanna trim ur mp3's using a PC app couse the mp3 trimmer in WM sux bigtime!
Big thanks for You buddies for Your help but unfortunatelly - none works on my device. I already try to put my mp3 ringtone to My Documents and My Ringtones (later) folder as well, but system still doesn't see my mp3's . What's going on?. It can't be so difficult! Tell me - how do You set up Your ringtone on Your device? Settings/Sound&Display/Ringtone (or Notification Sounds)?
OK. After Soft Reset UMISS'es method works! Own ringtones are visible for system in My Documents folder. Thank You pal.

Hoi Gandalf
you should put the MP3 in : Computer\ HD2 T8585\\\My Documents\My Ringtones
Alarm sounds: are stored in the Windows dir
greetz
mp3 as ringtone
this setup is very simple:
take the built-in file explorer and go to mp3 folder. choose your favourite mp3 file, long tap on it and then "set as ringtone"
it works for me with my hd2
Ringtone
Pegasus
Indeed works like a charm. But then follows the second question:
How to make a MP3 for the other systems sound like Remainders, alarms, incoming email, incoming voice mail?
I've tried to put the files anywhere in the My documents folders, but no joy
someone? Please?
gr fred
MP3 for Remainders, alarms, incoming email
i searched for the current notification sounds and found them in the Windows Folder.
so i copied my mp3 into Folder \Windows
now i can chande the notification sounds into my mp3
have fun with mobile phone

Hello
Do NOT waste valuable space from main memory for the mp3 ringtone which placed in My documents or /Windows.
Place the mp3 files in the root of the SD card without folders. It will show up and works great and You do not have to worry about flashing any custom rom. The files in the SD card stays.
Good luck

Pegasus,
Sometimes life is so simple. Thank you very much, your solution is the ONE. Works wonders.
reg. fred
for ringtones, u can have the mp3 in anywhere phone or SD memory, directly choose the file to be used as a ringtone in the file explorer...
for other notifications or messages or alarms, convert the file to wav and copy it to /windows folder ...then go to settings->menu->all settings->sounds and notifications n select the tune for the specific event.
HTC HD2 or iphone?
Hello guys. i was getting ready to buy an HD2 but now i see that simple things like diffirent mp3 for calls or for a caller or sms, alarms etc. are configured so hard, along with other hard questions like the difficult customizing of the hd2 have started make me thing again of the iphone. You people that alredy have an HD2 what do you suggest me? i do really care much about the easyness of synchronizing and the ability to synchro with other progs other than outlook. What would you suggest me?
Keep in mind,
if u use this Ringtone App u can change your ring directory as well as have multiple rings for each alarm.
thanks,
Keith
I used Mp3 trimmer to cut a song short. Now I cant seem to remove it from the device as I cant find it anyway. But it is still shoing up on the ring tone menu.

I dont seem to have a Windows folder on my HD2, but when trying to make the folder I was told I cant as it alreayd exists. Tryping the address into the bar tells me that it doesnt exist.... So I assume Windows Mobile Device Center is crap.

There's nothing difficult in changing the sounds. As you can see, there are many ways how to do that and they all work (for most users). There is nothing more simple then just copy your desired ringtones to windows folder and then just set it up.
Buying an iphone would be a terrible mistake, it's an old and inferior device compared to HD2.
MP3 Ringtone on SD Card
It's not recommended to save MP3 or any other big files into device memory. copy your MP3 files only to your "Storage Card".
It's so easy, just copy your MP3 song(s) to "\Storage Card\My Documents\My Ringtones" folder (and if you don't have "My Ringtones" folder just create one).

I put them in the windows map, not in a ringtone map.
Just put a small mp3 file in your windows map and then check it.
But i do that only for message tones.
For normal ringtones i made a map in my sd card and called it My ringtones.

Where are the existing notification sounds in the device memory? For some reason, when I go to Settings --> Sounds & Notifications --> Notifications, the sounds files from Bing Maps show up in the drop down menu. I would like to remove them. I'm using Energy ROM if it matters.

Hello everyone, I hope this post is in the correct forum.
I Googled extensively about applying custom MP3's as ringtones and have read conflicting answers. I have created a folder called ringtones on the sd card but the mp3's do not show up as options when trying to change the ringtone. And if someone else has posted about this, I apologize. Thanks
put your ringtones in media/audio/ringtones on the sdcard, the internal one
That's where my ringtones are I have them on my sd card I made a fokder called.ringtones also for videos and pictures idk why it won't work for you but try putting them on the internal memory
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I997 using Tapatalk
The stock music player in not compatible with mp3s as ringtones..... i have changed to another Touchwiz music player that has it....
Sent from my Samsung Infuse 4G
EDIT:
Here is the Touchwiz music player that allows you to set mp3's as ringtones with out putting your music in a ringtone file...

Put the MP3s in a folder called "ringtone" on either your internal or external SD. No additional apps needed.
Thanks everyone. I will try each suggestion and post back with results.
Cheers
Sorry for the tardiness of this reply. Thank you Hoofadoo, your suggestion worked. They now show when I want to select a custom ringtone. And BTW, my mp3 ringtones are all over 300kb so for me it seems to be working.
Thanks everyone,
ringtones
Know this is an older thread but wanted to post what worked for me.
I have the Infuse 2.3.6 running Vagabond ROM 3.2 by Qkster.
I was able to get the mp3 ringtones to load by placing them in a folder "ringtones" on the externalsd.
I have stock rom and have never had a problem setting mp3 files as ringtones... I just open in music player and hit menu then set as ringtone
If you have media scanner running on every boot (typical scenario):
1. Copy the mp3 into a folder called "ringtones" on internal or external SD
2. Go to settings --> Sound and set the mp3 as ring tone
If you have media scanner disabled (like me):
1. Enable media scanner
2. Copy the mp3 into /system/media/ringtones
3. Reboot
4. Go to settings --> Sound and set the mp3 as ring tone
5. Disable the media scanner
6. (Optional) Reboot and verify if the ringtone is still there
I have been using the second method since my Captivate days and have used it on many many ROMs, and it worked on every ROM.
