How hard is it to make the keyboard a different color? I know the fresh water theme that worked with fresh .7 had a nice light blue keyboard and I would like to try changing the color myself.
I think it is just as easy as editing the PNG files. I am not entirely familiar with the directory yet so I am not sure where they are at. Also, on Better Keyboards website they say you can make a Skin for their keyboard in about 10 to 15 minutes.
Couldn't be terribly hard.
suprisingly simple yet very time consuming. emphasis on time-consuming. Not sure about better keyboard. I don't use it because I really like the htc one.

id like to add a bit of colour to the keyboard on my hd2 as im finding the gray look a bit dull. im thinking maybe something like red letter/number keys, black arrow and surrounding keys and leave the background bit between the keys as it is. the letter/number keys have to have a faded look, dark red at the bottom slightly fading at the top. is this possable, or am i wanting too much lol........
cheers

nah, looks no different to what we have now. i'd like a colour scheme something like this.......
is it even possable..?
i take it thats a no then.....
it has to be possible, try finding where the keyboards files are located or maybe there is a registry key for it ...
after you find where the files are at you can start playing around with them...
please let us know if you find out anything...
if what your looking for is to have the letters in white and the rest of the keyboard in red then yes it is possible.
I could do that for you if your willing to to pull about stock 30 files off your phone.
I just finished a keyboard skin for my touch pro 2 and it has a slightly different layout then the hd2.
That being said I need the stock files from an hd2 to be able to make a skin for one as it is.
I can make your skins in return for the files I need
perhaps the dude here can help....

He knows what he is doing graphically, I will say that
He might be able to make the skins for sure, but he cant pack it into a cab or change the color of the text. He has all his files in a zip
Hes had requests already for a cab and for different letter colors and he said he doesnt know how.
He also has alot of comments on there regaurding the SIPBitmaps.dll file not working properly. So I dont think he knows how to resolve that.
I dont blame him hough, It took me hell to fgure it out the first time around.
im using a windows 7 style swype keyboard.
elegancia comes with a skinned "typestyle" keyboard.
sorry guys.
as far as swype goes theres a swype folder in the windows folder that you can play with the keyboard graphics and replace.
I made a few wp7 swype keyboard skins a while back. Here's a link to them if anyone's interested (click on image for link)..
White Background Screenshot..
Black Background Screenshot..

I have been working on making a blue dial pad for topaz, Here is what I have so far.... If you are interested, let me know I will try to update this when I get more of the dialer completed.
UPDATE: I made the colors deeper in the whole dial pad, it has given more contrast to the numbers.
5/17/2010: I have created a cab file of the numbers in the dial pad. I have pretty much abandoned the project because I went through a ton of files and could not find any of the remaining files to complete the dialer. I have tested the cab file and it does install correctly on my htc pure so feel free to use it.
That looks pretty awesome!
I suggest make the letters under the keys a lighter shade then they are more visible though
I like it. I use mostly blue themes and would love to have this. Look forward to the complete package. Thanks!
I am still searching for the rest of the files so I can skin them. After using the dial pad for a few days, I do agree that the letters are a bit out of contrast and difficult to see. I love blue and found many other files that I will skin. I think I might have found the files to the generic green that does not seem to go away no matter how many skins you put on them. I will update as I can.
Alright, so we all love swype, and with the developers not wanting to share means you cannot load a theme'd apk file, this seems like the next best route, teach you how to make your own and gives the tools to make it easy!
I am not distributing Swype here, so plz don't ask, this is how to theme your current Swype set up.
Disclaimer: This is my first attempt at themes, and since im just offering my work for freeeee, don't give me crap if I overlook'd something just politely inform me and I'll do what I can. Also I only have my Droid X for testing so its kinda on you if your keyboard is not similar to mine for now. Also, im not even going to attempt to water mark this or put some symbol to show I made it since I'm giving you the files you could just remove it anyway plus they are annoying to look at, so plz just dont take credit for my work.
So first things first, to ensure this post is quick and to the point you will need to already have a few things up and running,
Currently I use keyboard manager so portrait orientation is Swype, and landscape is multi-touch since its too wide to be efficient with swype, therefore; I only created templates for portait swype so far, sorry.
ADB
WinRar(for exploring apk)
Adobe Illustrator version CS 1 and up (for editing templates)
Adobe Photoshop (for resizing keyboard images)
Side Note: Other programs will work, and other methods work, these are just tried and proven so your on your own or at least quite possibly beyond the realm of my help by using different editors.
Step 1:
ADB pull the Swype.apk file from system/app
Step 2:
Back up said Swype.apk file to ensure you can revert to stock
Step 3:
Open apk and extract "assets" folder to an easily accessible location with WinRar
Step 4:
Download 4 Illustrator Templates attatched
Step 5:
Edit templates as you see fit (font, size, color, button color, background color, GO CRAZY!)
Step 6:
From Illustrator export as .png file (make sure to keep the same file names!)
Step 7:
In Photoshop, resize images to same size as the stock ones in the folder /assets/keyboards, (480 x 320 for Droid X but you should check yours to make sure)
Step 8:
Place your newly made and sized .png files into the previously mentioned /assets/keyboards folder overwriting existing. You can make other changes here, I was focusing on the keyboards here because they are the most tedious to change but go ahead, Run Amok. "Amok Amok Amok Amok" yeahh line from the movie "Hocus Pocus" ANYWAY
Step 9:
re inject Assets folder into Swype.apk overwriting old, (i usually delete Assets, then inject to ensure overwrite)
Step 10:
ADB push back to phone and switch input method back to Swype
Step 11:
Show off your newly customized keyboard!
Step 12:
Post your .png files to help the community and show off what you did!
Alternate Lazy Way: Sit around wait for a cool keyboard to be posted and leach, simply inject someones .png files into your Swype.apk
Daves Dark Theme 1
Alright so here is the .png files for my first theme, just to get the ball rolling. Lets see what you got!
HOLY SHYTE I was planning to create AI files for this and Launcher Pro Icons, this will save some time
Any chance you have LP Icons in vector format too?
Dude.
Thanks for providing .AI files, what a great contribution! I was going to take the stock png's and photoshop them. This is much cleaner!
You don't have full-width .AI's laying around do you?
Morkai
sorry I just started making themes last night, so I don't have any Icon files lying around. Although, in the newer versions of Illustrator you can use "live trace" to make vector formats from raster images.
Jeftep
You're asking about the landscape aspect ratio keyboard right? Currently I didn't make it yet if I do landscape it will be for the stock multi-touch keyboard first then maybe id get around to swype. The keys are just too spaced out to be efficient to use with 1 finger.
And yes, thats exactly where I started too, "well lemme just see what I can do with photoshop.... awww screww it Fresh Start in illustrator"
So sorry thats a no to both questions, but come on, I just started.

Ummm.. I have always shared how to theme with whom ever has asked.. plus all mine are simple to load... some swypes are custom to certain themes, and in those cases the dev's aren't going to spend time explaining how to do each part.
Not trying to bash, just stating a point.
As many know i have made quite a few swype themes(check sig), and many custom order for other devices who "technically" arent supposed to have swype.
If anyone needs help modding the tracer, or if you run into the "amp&" issue when playing with any other KB's i will be happy to help.
Good work btw, all the extra people theming makes more stuff avail, never anything wrong with that.
Swype C&D
Alright thats my fault, I meant the developers of Swype, not the XDA community.
http://www.xda-developers.com/announcements/xda-notice-swype/
this is what I was talking about with not really being able to share swype on the forum in an installable format. I was just trying to show a new way we can still all share themes while keeping the forum out of the firing range of C&D letters or worse.
While I'm certainly not claiming this to be a breakthrough in any means as its simply another way we can continue to share themes for this great app. I definitely agree there is a better way to install than this run around...
Have you modified the tracer for version 1.64.40.9380? I found a few forums that showed how to do it, but only in the newer versions and not droid X. Is libSwypecore.so different by Swype version? manufacturer?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=801770
Says to modify 5b410, 5b411, and 5b412 for Blue, Green, Red but it doesn't seem to change the color after I push it back to the phone. I got a newer version, but it was configured for 800x480 not our screen and repeadly threw errors.
Thanks
ahh, agreed. The creators are definitly unfriendly towards devs.
you are correct on the file to edit for the tracer. If you open up an unmodified .so file and search for the string "dda25bff" that is the hex color part. Since its in hex its backwards. The proper color code would be ffb52add. So say you wanted to make the color black = ff000000. You would type it in reverse 000000ff.
Only change that string and you should be good.
Tracer Edit worked like a charm, thanks.
Sketch theme
just found an new ADW theme and wanted a sketchey/hand drawn style KB
how do i complete step 4? where are the 4 Illustrator Templates attatched?
An ugly duckling perhaps...
I have moded the HIAPK teams sense-like dialler to make it look as much like stock sense as I can, I even borrowed the HTC dialler icon.
It's small (about 1.1MB for me), fast, simple, and now it looks good too. What more could you ask for? You've probably got room in your system partition for it seeing as how I managed to squash it into oxygen with oxygen hboot.
The Zip is not signed so you'll have to push it onto the phone. If somebody else could sign it or make a flashable zip for those that can't that'd be great. I tried using sign apk but it did't work and I don't have time to figure it out.
It's not perfect! I've gotten rid of the grey banding on the list successfully. Would have like to change the colour instead of having it all white.
Also, the app uses 1 png for all the buttons so the large ones are stretched. If somebody else knows how to change the xmls so we can add another png for the big buttons we can make it look nice and sharp!
Credit to Hi apk team!
Enjoy!
while we're on the htc theme... HTC SWYPE KEYBOARD
here the link to my HTC swype skins. They're very authentic looking indeed I'm sure you'll agree. Qwerty only at the moment until somebody else contributes.
Swype skin - htc sense 2.1 ime
Being new to android, I am slowly finding out how to customise the look and feel to suit me.
One thing I can't figure out is how to change the font colour in the attached photo, I'm not sure what this bit is called. But light blue is a terrible colour and I would like to change it to white or black if possible.
Can anyone tell me where this might be done? The OS is 4.2.2.
Hard
I am guessing by the huge amounts of replies, that changing the colour of this item is incredibly difficult and beyond the capabilities of most of the people on this forum.
anyone?
I must be in the wrong forum.
Well you could have saved some time and looked at it yourself. It is set in the system ui apk and defined in framework res. Depending on your device. See that's the thing it really depends on the rom and device. It is different for each. Not to mention there are plenty of tuts that would have told you the same thing.
thanks
Thanks, you couldn't point out one of these tuts could you? If I knew what the thing I want to change is called too, that would be helpful.
found it
It's called statusbar, and now I know it's name I can search for info on it.
Google returns a lot of results for 'thingy' or 'wotsit' but rarely the results you are looking for.
Conclusion
The thingy in the original post is called the status bar.
It is defined in /system/app/SystemUI.apk
Editing it requires a piece of software called apktool.
I now have white text instead of pale blue.
Thanks to zelendel for the clue.
All is now good.
As a slight aside, I found both a status_bar.xml and a gemini_status_bar.xml in SystemUI.apk and my phone appears to be using the gemini one. What practical use this is I don't know. The phone is a U51GT-C4B if anyone cares, it's as big as will fit in your jacket pocket without requiring the services of a tailor and makes using rdesktop so much easier.
It doesn't make your fingers any less fat, but it makes typing easier because the letters are further apart.
