HTC Magic on vodafone No Netfiltering - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hi Folks,
HTC & android noob of two days .....
Having been though the various posts (rooting etc) and tried a few things I cant seem to find anything to do with enabling net filtering on my unit. Having downloaded relentless router and HTC sync to sort this I have found that HTC Sync will not work at all with the vodafone version of the sapphire. Is there a way round this where I can get rooted and hopefully get the wifi-tether app working???
Thanks

Most roms on this board have a kernel with netfilter/iptables. If you are looking for a rooted donut rom built for speed I would recommend Dwang 1.1x, CyanogenMod is also great and has a lot of additional features. Don't really know about SenseUI roms though, I don't use them as I need to use Bluetooth.
If your phone is only 2 days old then you will probably have the perfected spl, you'll need to downgrade your firmware to 1.5 and then root it using the 'one click method' more details about this are elsewhere on the board, then you can flash any rom you like. I use Dwang's rom with aNetshare for wifi tethering and it works fine ... not sure if this would also work with htc sync though?

I have tried to perfor the oneclick method, but cant seem to get the usb driver to work with it. I can see the SD card but fastboot cant see my device. Ive treied updating the usb driver also to no avail....it is a vodfone version. Anyone any ideas?

need help flashing my vario iv to wm6.5 please!

Hi, ive flashed a few handsets before (wallaby x2, alpine and a wizard) and had no problems but for some reason cannot even get off the first hurdle with my t-mobile vario iv and cant even unlock the dam thing to flash a custom rom! ive looked at post after post and downloaded so many programs like hard spl and nothing works. the programs ether wont even open or they fail half way through the process but havent bricked my phone so far (fingers and toes crossed!) please could someone help me with what unlocking software i need, what radio rom and main rom i should be using. Really i would like to try a standard wm6.5 rom and then try custom roms after but like what nrg have done if stock is not avaliable. its model is RAPH300 part no- 99HFP013-00
my current rom version is 1.69.110.8 WWE
my current radio version is 1.02.25.19
protocol version 52.33.25.17U
my email is [email protected] if you prefer to help via email
thanks in advance everyone, steve.
Anyone out there?
Ensure you have hard SPL'd your handset before trying to flash ANY custom roms
before you do that, see if there is an updated T-Mobile rom, see if that update will work, if that update works without any glitches then it'll be alright, if you get an error with an official update then possibly something wrong with either your pc setup or the handset
if your using vista, make sure you've got the windows mobile device centre installed, if not, you need to go to microsoft and download it
if using windows xp, make sure you've got the latest activesync installed.
ensure the cable your using is not faulty by trying it with a different cable
and good luck!

thanks for trying to help, have you ever read something over and over and repeatedly missed something in it? i think thats what i did wrong. i did not see the bit about removing my sim card even though i had read the noobs guide again and again. removed my sim and bosh, spl worked! then everything else was a breeze and i am now running the energy 3.0 wm6.5 rom! havent flashed the radio yet but will probably do that today. the energy rom is a vast improvement on my stock 6.1 rom in many areas and seems to have improved camera performance quite a lot (not quality) and the menus are going to be great once i have got used to the totally different interface. does anyone have any sugestions on other roms tha may be better than this one?
Hi there
Glad to hear you got it working!
I am personally using NATF's WM6.1 lite touch pro rom as all i look for in a rom is stability as i actually use my phone for phone/text purposes and there is nothing more annoying than a hanging phone when your trying to quickly reply to a text message!

No WIFI tethering running stock HTC Inspire Gingerbread ROM

I am running the stock version of Gingerbread on my phone and just noticed today that the WIFI tethering option is not working. I don't live in the US and my phone is SIM unlocked.
When I select the WIFI tethering option I get a message to contact AT&T to purchase a tethering plan, I guess they did this to prevent people in the US from doing it since it was possible to do it with the Froyo version by deleting the APN settings.
I downloaded a widget that let me do the tethering once but not anymore.
Has anyone found a workaround for this?
Yes. Quit using the att stock rom.
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA Premium App
apn
follow this and use the guide to get free wifi teather on your phone.
http://www.unigizmo.com/1696/steps-by-steps-guide-–-to-enable-data-tethering-on-htc-inspire-4g
That will only work for Froyo but not Gingerbread . The new ROM won't even let you use those APN settings
I guess I will have to go back to stock Froyo. I did rooted once and instaled Coredroid but had to many annoying issues. Oh well hopefully someone will find a fix that doesn't involved rooting and whatnot. But thanks anyways
I have the GB too and I can confirm the old workaround doesn't work around and more.
I'm hoping for a new way .... Does anyone know of a fix or a 3rd party app that will provide the same functionality?
I've never "rooted" a phone before. I have the HTC Inspire and I was hoping to.
Can I root the GB version that is already installed? There is a Wireless Tethering app that won't work and asks .... Is your device rooted?
Hi everyone,
So far I haven't found any fix for the WIFI tethering or an app available in the Android market that will bypass that. So I just went back to Stock Froyo using the official RUU from HTC
About rooting, yeah sounds a bit complicated but if you follow all the steps then you'll be fine. I was kinda scared when I attempted to root my phone. I used the hack kit or whatever was called and I worked, make a search and you will find the guide. Then I installed CoreDroid V7 but it had some annoying issues, no random reboots or force closes though. Then after a week of using that ROM I read about the GB official updated and I downloaded the RUU. I gotta say the phone got a bit faster but today I discovered the WIFI tethering thing and it is something I use, maybe not all the time but is a great tool when there is no WIFI available to connect your computer to the Internet.
I shall update to GB when someone finds a fix for that. Good luck you all
Something you can try. I don't know if it will still work but if you turn airplane mode on and all at&t signal is off then turn on your wifi and go to the market and search for wifi tether apps.
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
I did try that. What I did was to put the phone in AP mode and it would let me activate the tethering option but as soon as I enabled the mobile connection I would get the same message that I need to call bla bla.
But Froyo will do alright for me right now. I didn't see any noticeable changes in the GUI in comparison with GB but GB does manage the resources better and improves the battery life. Next time I'll get a phone that is not carrier branded LOL
Bobbypty, I am having the exact same problem and want to do what you did when you say "So I just went back to Stock Froyo using the official RUU from HTC."
Can you please point me in the right direction as to how to obtain Stock Froyo from HTC? I have been to their site and can't find it, and I've searched the forums here and elsewhere on the web and can't find anything specific to this. I would really appreciate your help since it sounds like you have done EXACTLY what I want to do!
What's up?
Here is the direct download for the RUU and this will install the stock 2.2 for the phone. You will need to install the HTC sync in order to run it. Just double clicked on the exe file and you shouldn't have any problems. Make sure your phone has 30%+ of battery.

Is that going to downgrade radio as well? Thanks in advance.
Yup.
Everything will go back to stock. Radio version 12.39.60.19H_26.06.04.06_M Android version 2.2.1
Hi everyone,
Seems that there is no fix for this right now since the ROM for this phone is branded by ATT unlike the Desire HD (Close sister to this phone) is a unbranded HTC ROM.
So pretty much the options we have is either to go back to stock Froyo or root the phone and then install a custom ROM that is based off the DHD Gingerbread ROM, I've been reading other forums and the custom ROMs based from the Inspire 4G will still have the WIFI tethering option blocked, so stay away from those. Make sure the ROM you are installing is based from the DHD. Try Coredroid, Cyanogenmod or whatever you like. Rooting this phone is not that complicated and I was able to do it with a little help.
Good luck with the rooting/flashing if you decide to go for that. Search for Ace Hack Kit for instructions.
I was able to get wireless tethering working on an AT&T gingerbread ROM, I modifed the apn xml before i flashed it, I modified APN Type to * for all of the AT&T / ATT/ medianet entries in the file (except for the mms apn that exists in there). I can upload my file when I get home or you can download my ROM from the rom thread (static nonsense) and grab it from /system/etc. Theres also an apn file in /system/framework/framework-res.apk inside the xml folder, Mine is more or less blank, so you may want to replace that file as well. Just a thought anyways

That's essentially what I did in InspirePhacopida and that works on my phone, but I was able to do it on my wife's stock phone by just adding an APN, so who knows?
Hi Gene and beerbaronstatic,
First of all thanks for the assistance.
I guess that for me to do that I'll have to flash the ROM via rooting and whatnot or did you modify a file within the RUU so I can just run that and flash it as if I was the regular ROM?
Regards
Robert

No. You can't modify an RUU zip. They are signed by HTC. If you modify one, or make an unsigned one from scratch, then you must have S-OFF so that the hboot loader ignores the signature (or lack thereof).
This is Gingerbread 2.3.3 on the Inspire NOT Froyo 2.2
Thanks anywho....
Yes. The WIFI tethering option WILL NOT work on the stock Gingerbread ROM of the HTC Inspire, this will only work with stock Froyo by manually setting the APN.
If you want to have the WIFI tethering option with GB, then you will have to root the phone to install a custom ROM based off the Desire HD which is the European version of the Inspire. Coredroid is the only one I've used so far but right now I went back to stock Froyo.

[Q] Wifi error

Hi, having problems with wifi error. It won't turn on at all, just says error
Here's my setup:
HBoot 1.18.0000 S-ON (can't for the love of my life get S-OFF btw)
Android version 2.3.4
HTC Sense version 3.0

Build 1.72.401.1 CL158123 release keys
WebKit/533.1
Telenor Norway
I unlocked the phone the official HTC way.
Everything else seem to be working just fine. Any help appreciated!
usually it got problem witk kernal. better check back .
Ok, thanks, I'll see if I can find out anything in that department.
Finally managed to get the mess cleaned up. After fiddling around with revolutionary for ages, I got the phone S-OFF'd. I think uninstalling HTC Sync and previous drivers, then installing new ones, were the key to success here.
Flashed the newest insert coin ROM with the built in kernel and behold!: wifi!

Please help solve software issues w/ Captivate i896. Advice on installing custom ROMS

Hello everybody,
I´ve got a Rogers Captivate i896 with Firmware version 2.2 (stock Rogers firmware(Canada), flashed 1 year ago, upgrading from 2.1 stock)
Kernel version 2.6.32.9
Modem version UXJL1
Rooted, unlocked and 1 click Lagfix
I´m on Rogers network.
Problems:
1) Many applications stop working once updated. IM+ version 4.xx works, anything higher crashes on start. Same story happens with LOTS of apps from Playstore, so I´m forced to be careful when updating apps. This is becoming super-annoying.
2)Recently, installed DROIDVPN and TUN.KO installer to use Dell voice on an Unlimited Mobile Browsing plan(crippled data for WAP browsing). It worked beautifully for 1 day, now starting DROIDVPN or TUN.KO makes the phone restart.
3)I´d like to get rid of built-in garbage, most of which I do not use, to have more control over running apps, especially those that hang themselves into start-up.
4) I´d like to get better battery life. I use my phone more and more, I´ve got 2 batteries and and external charger, and yet i sometimes have trouble getting to the end of the day without my phone dying/I]
Solutions.
I imagine that the only explanation for apps that simply refuse to work is that they are designed for newer Android systems. This happened with Skype that didn´t work with Eclair, but does work with 2.2.
Should I upgrade to ICS?
I have some experience flashing, yet I´m far from an expert. What´s the most fail-safe plan of actions? Would the following work:
1)Backup everything using TitaniumBackup
2)Install custom bootloader that would allow me to flash install.zip from external SD card
3)Choose a custom ROM based on user feedbacks, like Cyanogen MOD.
4)Restore all the apps
5)Experiment with different modem firmware to see which gives me best performance
I no longer have time to tinker around in the dark, so I´d like to have a plan before I get started. Any input on the possible solutions to the problems I´m experiencing?
Thank you in advance.

Just a question: why haven't you upgraded to Rogers official GB?
And BTW, ICS is a massive improvement over 2.1, 2.2 and 2.3.
I have a great experience with this ICS Rom:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1522881
But there are others that are just as good I'm sure.
My 2 cents:
Stay away from ICS. It has the ability to damage your SD card.
Use this post to upgrade to gingerbread. Then use the utility in my signature to get root and cwm. Then choose a GB based ROM that suits your needs. May I suggest Legend?
¨Use this post to upgrade to gingerbread. Then use the utility in my signature to get root and cwm¨
Wouldn´t it be wiser to get clockwork mod before any upgrading just in case things go bad? I vaguely remember using clockworkmod last time I dealt with flashing, isn´t it a loader that allows you to load install.zip from SD card? Or would flashing a new system wipe out the mod as well?
How exactly can ICS damage SD card. Are you talking about the external SD or the built-in SD storage in the phone?
I´ve read partially the threads on Legend and Android Open Kang Project - captivatemtd - Milestone 6. Both sound pretty good. As far as you guys know, which rom is known to give best battery life?
If you're going to upgrade to a custom rom that is Gingerbread or Higher, you will need the Gingerbread bootloaders. That is why I say to go to stock Gingerbread first.
ICS can cause the Encryption Unsuccessful bug as seen here. It will cause you to lose all access to the built-in SD storage. It doesn't happen to everyone, but when it does, you'll wish you had heeded my advice.

[Q] Sensation Falling Apart

Hi all , I had my sensation for a long time , and suddenly i decided to unlock bootloader s-off it and do a custom rom
at first i unlocked the bootloader via htc.com method
then I kept my device s-on and flashed 4ext
i flashed revolution rom and everything was fine until one day the apps like facebook and whatsapp didnt have an internet connection through wifi
only 3G connection , although i was connected to wifi but no response
i tried to reflash the rom but then the wifi didnt work at all , kept going on again off again
i thought i should make s-off
i used jupotntbar method ( wire trick ) and s-offed my device
i tried the rom again nothing happened , all was wrong
then all of a sudden my USB didnt read at all , anytime i plug it in it is on charge only mode and doesnt appear to connect to the pc , i tried different PCs but no luck
i tried changing radio and ril , i changed the recovery , until i installed CWM recovery ( using rom manager via 3G ) and the wifi was on again and sometimes it fails but it works .... still no USB
if anyone can help me i would donate and thank him a lot
i cant go to a service center becuz i have none in my country

What happened seems quite weird, but sometimes happen. Did you try another ROM? Sometimes problems start without any apparent reason. When it happens you can either wipe your phone and start your system anew, or you can flash another ROM (again with full wipe).
As a personal preference I prefer 4EXT recovery, but if you say clockworkmod works best for you, keep it. I don't have enough understanding to know the impact of the recovery on regular usage (I know it has impact on when the phone is off).
Try another ROM, that would be my first advice. Or maybe even RUU (Since you got S-Off now, I suggest you get yourself SuperCID. There is a guide in the general forum).
Here is a list of ROMs that worked flawlessly for me (or at least without any apparent bugs):
albinoman's CM10.1 (no HTC sense, awesome ROM if you can live with AOSP)
ViperS 1.6.3 (works great)
ViperS 3.1.2 (apparently works fine, but since this ROM is fully ported (awesome work of SebastianFM) there might be the occasional glitch)
AndroidRevolutionHD - I used a (much) older version and had some issues with wifi (fixed with a newer version), but a good ROM.
And most other ROMs work fine as well, just didn't get to try them myself.
If nothing helps, after you get SuperCID, yuo can try using an RUU to restore your phone to stock. It will also flash the firmware and radio partitions, which might also fix stuff. After you get SuperCID you can use any RUU you'd like.
Good luck.

Hmmm.... That complicates things. It's allways a possiblity that this is a hardware problem, but let's try something else. If changing ROM doesn't work, maybe flashing firmware will help. Get a PG58IMG.zip file of either 3.32 or 3.33 firmware from this thread, and flash with the instructions of the thread.
Very Important! Check the md5sum of the firmware you download, as it can permanently brick your phone if it's not flashed correctly.
Good luck. If that doesn't work, I doubt if anyhing will. If you do manage to get USB connection, I suggest RUUing anyway, to get a clean install for your device.

Then I'm afraid I'm out of suggestions. Just to be sure. Did you try another cable? What did the computer recognize (in device manager, it should show something for the device as a USB device)?
This might lead us to a new direction.

On what ROM you're currently on? Did you perform S-Off method after returning to Stock? For S-Off the prerequisite is Rooted stock ROM.
I faced this issue when I was on MIUI ROM and my PC didn't detected my device. I suggest you should flash the ViperS JB after a Superwipe. It have MTP support and it let the PC and Phone access SD card at the same time. I am sure it will detect your device after flashing ViperS JB. Also try uninstalling the HTC drivers from your PC and install the latest HTC drivers. I am not on PC otherwise I would have shared the link for latest drivers. Also try connecting your phone with original HTC Cable and USB port 2.0.
