Charging Led Color - G1 Android Development

now now don't flame me for posting in the Dream Android Development Section. Because I have an ideal I would like devs to see and maybe you know, develop.
So my ideal is cross platform/rom app/hack to change the colors of the leds when the phone is charging. I know I am getting tired of Red, Orange, Green. its so dull and boring.
What do you guys think?
P.S. Mods please forgive my foolishness if I have posted in the totally wrong section.

You mean cycle through the colours when it's charging? or just change the colour?
There's plenty of apps on the market that let you change the colour for incoming calls, messages, wifi, etc. but none that cycle through the colours.
That would be pretty sweet tbh.

you're in the right section, android development. since this would be a development idea, you're correct. although it can be debatable that it's just a question... I say YES. so who knows what to do?

I think when it is fully charged it should cycle through numerous colors. Charging should pulsate between red and orange

Or can we fix the notification while charging? there is only 1 app for that and its a payed! it's something that should be stock on the phone like SMS

LED Notification flashing while charging
I agree. It would be great to have the LED flash while charging when we get any kind of notification sms, email, alarm, tweet, gtalk etc. maybe the color changing option could be added to the settings menu too. This is a great idea.
In cyan's roms there is a great LED color/flash rate changing menu in the messaging settings. Could this be a good place to start from?

Found an app that does just that, flash notifications when charging. It's called "Always Flash for root users." It's paid, I might have it free. (sssssssshhh). I didn't like it because it runs as a background service and I despise background services, but definitely works well.
I do like the idea of pulsating colors while charging. However, I'm not quite sure how the electronics of the LED work in the G1. I haven't read anything about it being able to pulse. LED's can pulse, but I don't know if the G1 can do that.
Doesn't the myTouch's trackball pulse while charging?

I don't think what you guys are saying is what he wants.
I think he wants when it's charging
<15%=red
<90%=orange
>90%=Green
He wants to change those colors to blue or purple or yellow or something

Its all the same thing. If we can change the colors we can also make them pulsate

Yeah, but it started to become one tree completely different of what he wanted, after the pulsate was mentioned

Hero LED
I remember Hero LED used to be able to change the LED's whilst charging, but when it got 'improved' it no longer interfered with the green charging LED.
Personally I am not concerned about gradiating LEDs whilst charging, but would like the LEDs to notify me when I have had an incoming e-mail or SMS whilst charging, and I dont want to have to pay £1 for the privelige!

Any kinda change is good though I do like the pulsating, Now thats sexy. Like when a mac is sleeping its lil light pulsates damn thats hot.
Yes all of your ideals are correct.

Always flash is a good start...
Okay, we are almost there, development-wise, if someone with some more expertise than me would get interested enough to the work... with Always Flash for Root, we know that it is very possible to get rid of the default charge light, and replace it with another app's notification. All we need is an app that detects a phone's charging state and battery level (can be done without root), and lights the led based on that (can also be done without root) in ways configurable by the user (a la "Missed Call" app).
Pulsing would be a nice effect, but whether that's possible or not, I think we should have it gradually shift colors from totally red, through the rainbow as it charges to orange, yellow, and finally green when fully charged. It is possible to light any custom color based on rgb values (there are apps that do this in the market), so this is all very doable with a normal app. All we are missing is a free version of "Always Flash" to get the default charge out of the way so the app can do its color changing thing. (once great Java dev creates it, that is)

hmmmm....
depending on the charge state of the battery the lights could cycle (or pulsate)from red to yellow to green...kinda like a traffic light
that would be awesome!

That's what I was saying, only have them fade gradually from one to the other. (say, have the color change slightly, unnoticeably, each time it pulses)
But, in any case, the point of this thread is not exactly how it should look (It should be largely user configurable, anyway), but how can we do it. In fact, I think we can see how to do it, if only someone can write the app...

Yeah always flash is handy, but I sure as hell did not pay for it. RGB does work and dimming is possible, this is proven by the old hero roms and there dimly lit leds. and the RGB value config is great. Hopefully someone that knows more about this will develop an epic free app.

Sorry for the double post but I forgot to mention there is a free app on the market called "LED Tester" check it out.
It would be great if a dev can find a use for it. ^_^

[Q] [Request/Question] Flashlight/Tourch app that works with the indicator LED

Hi,
I've been searching the world, the interwebs and on this forum... but nothing seems to come close to what i actually (need) want for my HTC Hero, Since i find myself blind at night it can be challenging to avoid obstacles at night and i have to either turn on the light or use my phone with a "hey look! my phone is a flashlight / tourch" app that uses my screen by turning it bright white (witch hurts my eyes, wakes my GF and drains my battery).
One night i realized that my indicator led (at that time green) was enough light to successfully navigate the dark bedroom at night, without waking my partner... but allas it only showed up when it was done charging and still plugged into the adapter / computer, unfortunately many a usb cable do not reach beyond 1 meter. and i was again forced to use the "hey look! my phone is a flashlight / tourch" app witch got me into a lot of trouble again...
of course i tried the look my phone is a flashlight white screen apps but they tend drain the battery real quick and anoy my partner.
in short... i'm looking for an flashlight app that uses my indicator led instead of my screen or the non-existent camera flash LED.
can anyone here point me in the right direction or make an app like this one
I would be very grateful
Cheers
R.
I am unsure if you can control a hardware LED. I will look into it.
thx that would be awesome, thanks in advance
So yeah, screen flashlight apps let you control the brightness, and the one I used long ago, also lets you control the size of the area, color, etc....
that might be so but the screen flashlight is imho anoying and i would prefer to use the green LED

I think you can only control it when you are rooted and it is very device dependent how this is done. But yes it can be done... Basically it comes down to finding the right files in the /sys directory that are controlling the led(-s) and output something to it (usually a 1 or 255) to switch it on. (Maybe this is some info that other developers can use).

Is there an LED hack for this phone yet?

I use NoLed right now but is there an LED hack like Missed Call app around?
What exactly are you looking for? Different colors or just always flashing LED even when its charging etc?? I bought "always flash" so I know when there's a text or email even when its charging. Been working perfect with the last 3-4 phones I've had.. Def worth the couple bux.
Edit: attached the apk for all...
just different colors from the LED

Couldn't find "always flash" app in the Market
I doubt our led can flash colours other than red and yellow. I stand to be corrected
Cyanogenmod has tons of settings, different colors for different apps etc
Yeah, but that required a rooted phone

Might have been removed, here's the apk from my files attached.
The "notification LED" color depends in first of your phone, so any applications even if you have root access can give you an other color, if your phone doesn't have it.
The "notification LED" of the HTC Sensation (or HTC Sensation 4G) shows a :
- Solid green light when it is connected to the power adapter or
a computer and the battery is fully charged.
- Flashing green light when you have a pending notification.
- Solid orange light when the battery is being charged.
- Flashing red light when the battery level reaches very low.
So except if you open your phone to change the led (at your own risks), you can't have for exemple a "notification LED" blue color.

Change LED notification color?

I know its possible with apps but was wondering if its possible with the stock software?? If not, what ap are you guys using for this function? TIA
I use Lightflow.
I use lightFlow as well and its not possible in the stock software AFAIK.

Do we have all these color options in lightflow or only a few? If so which ones do yall use?

The LED in the phone supports RGB so you should be able to get a moderately wide color spread. Each different notification in my phone has a different color and blink rate specified by lightflow so I cant really go into detail there. The only thing I have yet to figure out with it is how to dim the LED as its really bright, and while I want a charging indicator, at night its hard to sleep with the bright orange on my phone.

Now it seems my notification LED is going off for no reason; there are no notifications currently showing besides juice defender and smart actions neither of which have an LED function tied to them; does this ever happen to you guys?

Ya, I've had phantom notification issues before. Before I got the settings right for my 3rd party SMS app (Handcent) I had a few issues where the notifications weren't clearing. The other thing you might check is that gmail will try and notify even if your using something else to mark the message as read, (ie: using gmail on a different computer and reading the message will make it disappear from the status bar on your phone cause to the mailing client the message has been read, but the lightflow notification requires you to open the app that's triggering the notification to clear the lightflow notification.) Other than that I'd try changing the color of different apps and seeing if the LED changes with it and try to pin down the app that is causing the random light.
Let me know if that helps,
CMNDR
Hi:
The best feature of lightflow is the ability to turn all the notification lights off at night, from any hour yo choose to any hour in the morning.
Tom
Those of you using light flow, what settings are you using? And are you rooted? What build are you on. I had never even noticed the pho had a notification light until I had had it for a while and I saw the low battery light one day, until then I had never noticed it lit.. I'm currently rooted only, have not unlocked the boot loader. On build 125-asa-10.
I first thought light flow was not working but have come to notice it is, its just extremely dim to the point you almost can't see it even in a dark room. Anyone else have this issue or know what I'm doing wrong?

I never noticed it being excessively dim per se, but when I first installed the ap at the office under flourescent lighting the lights seemed weak and not to match the colors I had selected. Once I decided to choose only a few notifications and with stick main standard colors (red, yellow, green, blue, orange, cyan) I noticed it was doing a good job of notifying me and the colors were unique and visible in all light conditions. For emails I have a long delay, for texts I have a medium delay, for missed calls I have a short delay, for missed calls messages or mms or voicemail from wife I have an extra short delay.
The only gripe I would say I have with lightflow is that it seems to stop notifying if not used for a while. Sort of like it's being dumped out of memory and needs to be restarted.

I'm trying to figure out if I have a hardware issue but im starting to doubt that too. I really don't want to do a factory reset but it may come to that. when the battery is low ~5% the led will blink bright red when unplugging, and bright blue when plugging in so it seems like its capable of going bright. driving me nuts that its not bright enough to see during normal operation.

Does it have a notification LED?

I rarely use my phone and don't obsessively check it. If something needs my attention it flashes the coloured led on an every 1-second cycle. I have colours set up for email, sms and whatsapp.
I can see it at a glance on my desk/couch without needing to pick up the phone, I also know a notification is waiting for me if I was far away from the phone to hear the notification sound or vibration. I'm also deaf so I don't take voice calls, so anything that is an emergency will be in text form and has to grab my attention.
This is why I had to skip buying the OnePlus 6T - it has no LED. Other alternatives such as the Xiaomi Pocophone F1 has only 1 colour on its LED. I don't know what other alternatives there are. I've always stuck with phones that are easily unlockable and has good ROM support (Nexus 4 to OPO to OP3 currently), so I can finetune the LED colours and timing frequency on a per app basis.
p.s. I'm aware there are third-party tools such as Always on Amoled on Google Play. But I have no idea if it's any good, development may stop at any time, and they're usually battery drainers.
I'm totally same boat with you and we are sinking.
WHY in Earth notification led is removed now days?
It was probably best thing Android had starting day 1. when I started use it (2008)
I'm also using OnePlus 5T still because led removed after this model....
It doesn't have the LED, but it does light up the left side of the screen instead: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-B9cJeF0x8Q
If this can be properly customized (make this the only trace of ambient display, set colors for individual apps and ideally shift the light strip to the top side instead of the left side to use a litte bit less battery) I'd be fine with that
Wow! This sounds awesome if can customize!
Normal 7 don't have nothing I think?

The guy presenting this review says that both the pro and non-pro have the feature https://youtu.be/_e5Imvxw8kk?t=204
However, I'd like to see a video of it working on the non-pro variant just to be sure it really does have the feature. Would also like to know whether it can be set to keep lighting intermittently until the notification is manually dismissed, just like a LED notification light works.

What is everyone doing for notifications?

Hey all,
I just picked up a 7 Pro and it's my first phone without a notification light. What are you all doing to make sure you don't miss important notifications?
On my OnePlus 5 I used to use Light Manager to show me a static (not blinking) light of a different color depending on the notification, so I could glance at my phone and know what notifications were waiting for me. (Especially helpful was a unique color for when my wife texted me. Little quality-of-life stuff like this goes a long way, ya know?)
Now that I don't have a notification light I've tried:
- Ambient Display: This seems too easy to miss a notification after it has passed. Always picking up or tapping on the phone to see notifications is a hassle.
- Always On AMOLED: I've tried two apps by the same name and they both drain my battery horribly, even if I have it set to show only a black screen unless a notification comes in.
- NotifyBuddy: This is close, but the blinking light drives me nuts and I've heard the battery drain is bad here too.
Has anyone found something that works for them and doesn't destroy battery life?
I just pickup my phone and it shows notifications. At first i missed the LED light but not anymore.
I am using this currently and it works really well. What it does is make the built in Horizon light continue to repeat itself according to your chosen settings...much like it should by default but OnePlus dropped the ball!
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=vaf.vishal.plusbeat&hl=en_US
What is the sense of having that "horizon light" if it doesn't actually DO anything? I don't get it... why include it....
