I'm looking for a Blackboard Application for Android (obviously). If you don't know what the program is here is a link. It's used for class work at a lot of colleges. There is a mobile app available for iPhone and I believe one is in development for Blackberry.
http://www.blackboard.com/
I previously have worked with Blackboard as both a student and an instructor. Aside from the fact that Blackboard, eLearning, WebCT, etc are all crappy tools, I believe their API for access is completely closed off so developing an Android app relies mostly on Blackboard's end to develop it.
I know it's not the answer you're looking for, but there are other tools on the web like Blackboard that provide your own private course set up to keep track of your documents for class, etc. If you just keep on top of what's being uploaded for Bloackboard then you can keep a pretty nice management suite for all of your coursework, but it obviously won't be up to date with what your teacher uploads.
I hope you find something that works, cause I've looked into this myself. Let me know if you have any luck.
If I recall, blackboard is basically implemented as a website.
That being the case, just point your browser at it and be done.

Yes I figured as much. I wrote blackboard on the situation and I've not received a response and I don't think that I should. I had heard however that certain rooted Android based phones are able to run iPhone apps. I don't know if thats because of developers converting the apps or there is actually an emulator available.

That was my initial attempt actually. Their are various plugins with the site that make that complicated. The website rejects logins from mobiles. I actually have trouble accessing the website unless I'm using either Firefox or IE.

You sure about it rejecting mobile sites? I do remember accessing the site via Opera Moblie 9.5 beta(when it was just leaked) on my WM phone and via Opera Mini 4 with out an issue.

Yes it actually has to do with the school. While Blackboard is run via a website that website is administered by the school. The school I go to blocks all connections from cell phones for some reason. I've spoken to the IT support guys but they don't seem to care about working with me. I'm transferring schools next semester so hopefully I won't have to worry about it after that.
Im not positive, but i am pretty sure i have accessed blackboard with my mytouch. i am running CM 4.2.8 and enochx. what you have to do is go into the browser and go into settings, there is an option called mobile web settings and in there you can choose desktop and it makes you phone like a regular browser. thats what worked for me, hope it works for you too.
Works on Dolphin for me, check my grades there often.
I have also been able to access blackboard just fine on the default browser and Dolphin Browser.
A stand alone app would be cool, but would require alot of work and possibly authentication from the school? which would not happen
I use blackboard with my g1 browser quite often. I cannot say that there are no problems, but can that ever be said in regards to blackboard?
as a student I've used Blackboard, WebCT and Moodle..and i gotta say I found Moodle to be the coolest (and as I recall it's open source).
Anyway, if your school blocks connection from mobile phones, you can use the Dolphin Browser (or the default one if it's modded) and change the user-agent to Desktop instead of Android. Maybe that would work?
Bb on G1
It's always been a bucket of headaches, but i can confirm that perseverance pays off. The main issue is endless loop/failure on trying to login. My most reliable way around this is by accessing my school's main student portal page first and after logging in there, using the Blackboard course link. Kind of a backdoor in but if your school provides that sort of portal, it's worth a shot. Also FYI, when I had a BlackBerry I never had any luck with stock browser, but Opera always worked. Good luck, hope this helped.
so apparently there is a Sprint only Blackboard app out now for Android phones, does anyone know why it's only for Sprint phones or if it'll ever be a standard market app?
YES!! my school has quite a bit of trouble working blackboard, and there are always issues getting students into class, allowing them to see the class shell etc... And on dolphin I can check it, but sometimes it would block me. This app is extremely needed. Sucks its only on sprint....but I'm glad i got a sprint hero!
I am desperately trying to find this app so I cant install it on my phone even though i am with T-mobile.

Why doesn't someone just use skyfire, let's you fool a page that you're a desktop and not a phone.

Engadget did a small feature on this really wicked awesome looking browser. It has the Kaiser featuring this browser. You can find that article here:

You can sign up for the private beta here: http://www.skyfire.com/sign-up I suggest yall don't wait to long signing up as who knows how long this will be open.
Oh and so you dont wonder I didnt have a beta code and I signed up. I got this email back from them, "Thank you for signing up for the Skyfire private beta program. We will notify you when the beta version of Skyfire mobile web browser is ready for a test drive. We look forward to your feature suggestions, troubleshooting tips and ideas. Even with the early beta release, you'll be browsing the web on your phone just like you do on your PC."
I hope we dont have to wait to long for the actual ability to download this broswer looks cool.
OH and FYI:
From their Privacy Policy:
"Once you have subscribed to and begin to use the Browser, we will collect information about your use of the Browser on your Device (“Browser Usage Information”). Browser Usage Information includes such information as which websites and programs you access or download on your Device, how long you visit such websites and use such programs, your activities (such as products purchased or advertisements viewed) on such websites, which specific areas of a website or webpage you use and for how long, websites you bookmark, search terms you use, referring/exit pages, browser and platform types, the geographic location in which your Device is being used and information you provide on third party websites. All of your Browser Usage Information is stored by Skyfire under an automatically generated, random identification number (“ID Number”) that will not be associated with or linked to your Personal Information. Please be aware, though, that your Browser Usage Information, when viewed in the aggregate, may reveal your identity even if it is not associated with or linked to your Personal Information."
In other words, when you use our browser, we track everything you do, and assign an "anonymous" ID number to that information. And oh, by the way, the "anonymous" ID number may be linked to your identity.
I got the message on my phone tonight to load the SkyFire beta and I did. It is indeed very quick and responsive. One the plus side, it gives the entire page formatted in the shape of the screen. When you tap something to expand it, however, it seems to expand around the spot you touched, so in some texts the borders go out of the screen. Opera mini seems to expand but also format things a bit at the same time. Zoom is limited to two steps, in and out. Overall, pretty good impressions so far, and it does not seem to interfere with any other programs.

this browser still has a ways to go, but it's a great 1st step.
it definitely has a ways to go. feels slow & unresponsive to me. plus it's server side rendering through a proxy and i don't want them to know if i'm looking at bigbootybutts.com or tracking my experience to target ads at me. I'll wait for the new opera.

What is the best word processor designed for Honeycomb thus far that gives many of the features that MS Word also gives, such as formatting options, spell check, ect.
I'm basically looking for the most complete world processor out there for Honeycomb.
Probably Polaris.. comes with the TF
Documents to GO has been my go-to app since the beginning.
It works flawlessly. Although Polaris looks a lot nicer.
Polaris looks the best but I last I tried I couldn't open a word or spreadsheet document created with it in openoffice or libreoffice (free MS office alternatives), which ruins it for me. I don't know whether they have updated or fixed this issue since I last checked..
Ohh, shoot, I haven't tried that yet. Hmm, I use openoffice on my laptop too, are you saving it in openoffice format or .doc?
I want to save them as .doc files so that I can easily switch between working on my PC with MS Word, and my TF with what ever word processor I end up using.

Check out the link in my signature. Trust me, you are not the first one to ask this question. What is not in the review are the online programs like Google Docs and Microsoft Live Office. Both are pretty cool and the latter looks almost exactly like the real office programs!

This is a very neat UI! I just bought it and if I ever find time I will include it in my comparison. It definitely has a lot of potential although it has many shortcomings regarding formatting and TrueType interpretation. PowerPoint ("Show") seems to be affected in particular.

Since you are the guru on this, please, tested and let us know how is it and what is your opinion.
I was looking at it last night and was close to buy the app, but I prefer for you to let us know what you think.
Thank you
This post is very helpful and seems related.
Also: no one has suggested just using Microsoft Word on your desktop/laptop via VPN. I know a couple of people like to do that.
My plan is to write documents using either the onboard application or Google Docs (depending on which app works better and if I am connected), then use something like TeamViewer or Logmein to do the nitty-gritty formatting.
Thank you for the compliment but unfortunately I don't have as much time as I used to I'll do me best though since I want to know myself! I'll update my comparison thread once I did it!

I've tried a few word processing programs as I've looked for something as good as MS Word or Open Office. So far, I've not found anything that can replace these programs. All of them lack certain key features - including google docs, polaris, quick office HD, documents 2 go. I haven't tried thinkoffice yet, but it doesn't look much better. I just now tried MS Live Office, but it wouldn't work on the tab - i got a page that said I needed to use MS Explorer or Firefox to access it. It looks like the most full featured option, but unless we can get past this browser limit, it doesn't matter on the TF.
Polaris office is the best so far, though I haven't tried to open the documents in open office, so I can't speak to that problem. I used QuickOffice HD up until the 3.2 update because copy/paste in polaris was broken.
help with polaris
I need help. I am a new tf owner and I can not get polaris to work. I have tried two google and one box accounts. When I go to set up the account I get an error message saying that it can not connect to the Web server. I was able to connect to one google account once then I added files to it and could no longer connect, same error message. I even tried creating a new box account and that did not work. Any help would be great
I believe I've done my due diligence in trying to find this by searching. My goal is to eliminate as many textbooks as possible from my backpack, but there seem to be a number of arbitrary walls in ebooks. CourseSmart and Kindle both carry the book I need. CouseSmart doesn't allow offline reading, which I need, and Kindle doesn't sell that particular book to anything but their cloud and a kindle.
So I try to open up the kindle cloud reader and their website only supports firefox 6+, chrome 11+, safari 5+ or Safari ipad ios 4+.
Thus my question is, is there a way to get any of these browsers to play nice with my xoom in such a way to make amazon show me some love?Either that or a way to circumvent CourseSmart's offline issue, but SourseSmart texts are more expensive, at least for my accounting books this semester.
32GB wifi only running 3.2.1
Links not allowed for a noob like me or I'd save you a trip to google with a link or two. If there's a thread on this feel free to throw rocks and sticks at me, as long as I can get the link as well.

The book I need is specifically blocked from being purchased on the xoom with the kindle app.
Ah, I see. So you can read it from the Kindle Cloud Reader and not the Xoom? Very strange. What about on a smartphone?
I hate when publishers come up with these arbitrary rules.
Well, you're going to have to download a ton of browsers to the Xoom and see if one of them will let you load the cloud reader in desktop mode.
Feel your pain.

I would imagine if I can get an accepted browser to run, then cloud reader would think I am on a PC or rather that it doesn't care. I kind of gave up on this thread after a day of no responses, I'm currently using google to see if I can make linux run on the xoom which would then let me install firefox or chrome.
Have you tried changing the user agent that the browser uses?
In honeycomb, you will need to browse to about:debug to enable the advanced settings and then change the user agent string in the advanced settings.
In ICS you can try the "Request Desktop Site" option from the menu.

That did it. I had tried this on firefox and dolphin but those didn't work. Not sure if I was doing it properly. I had read on the forums that dolphin was a better browser before I even got the xoom so I didn't use the default browser. It let me try as an ipad and a desktop using the wizard walk through, but didn't work. The website specifically mentioned chrome and firefox do I downloaded both of those with no success, but now I think they might work if I use debug. I can read my books now so I'll goof around more with other browsers on study breaks once school gets started.
Huge thanks. Between this semester and next fall this xoom might pay for itself in reduced textbook costs.

Thanks for taking a look around, but those are different authors. Finding free textbooks in current use would be a neat trick though.
I thought you were wondering about the subject matter. The only way to make sure you have the right book, normally, is the ISBN because all the books at this level seem to have the same name.
The book is 9780078136627
Occasionally you can look it up by authors, name, and edition, but my google always gets clogged up with other books of the same edition or other books by the same author(s).
The question I have is, what the hell is wrong with android and java scrivpt ? every browser I try has problems with executing java based content. The stock browser and browser plus seem to take a holiday whenever they want. Text fields seem to migrate all over the page, and refuse to input text. If it does by some miracle it does work, selecting the next field is a crap shoot if it will work or wonk out. Is there a decent browser that doesnt choke on java ?
Try firefox (beta) or chrome.

Java and Javascript are two very different languages, Java is a language to be run on a VM (a modified version is actually used to run android) and Javascript is a scripting language used in webpages. Android does not support running Java apps, but that is not what you are asking. For your Javascript issues the default browser or chrome should do fine, the default browser has a user friendly way to always use desktop sites that you might want to check to have pages behave more like normal pages than mobile pages if you haven't already changed it.
My mistake about java and java script. I am more of a hardware guy than a software guy. I usually try to use the desktop site if I can. The problem I have is usually with a popup form of some kind. Comcast and Espn use simular forms. Using chrome works for most sites, but it is by no means the perfect browser. It is frustrating as of late the number of sites that seem to choke this tablet. Having 4 cores seems to have little benefit in rendering the webpage. Case in point, my dual core Sensation phone runs the desktop sites faster than this tablet.
I am having same issues (well my wife is). We purchased this device in hopes of it being able to double for her online classes and to take with us when out & about to entertain the kids when they do not want to sit still in restaurant etc. She is able to login into her site for school but when it comes to pop ups, applets and such it does not work. The tablet did receive the jellybean update and was hoping someone could offer some assistance in getting it working. I am somewhat a tech savvy guy and have turned on javascript, allowed popups, tried multiple browsers like dolphin, skyfire, the preloaded one, boat and none seem to allow her to do anything. I have not tried rooting or placing any sort of cooked roms in fear of messing it up. any help of steering in correct direction would be of greatest help.

Now are you using the stock browser or Chrome? Chrome might be better on account I think most sites see chrome as the desktop version and has better compatibility. Just make sure to use desktop version in the settings.

Hi,
So I trust the AOSP browser but it's not the greatest security wise, It only updates vulnerabilities with the system update which manufacturers don't always do .
Chrome is updating regularly but I don't like the fact that it's googles, so lets say that I don't trust it.
Firefox sounds great but it crashes on my system (different thread).
there is also some UA browser from china but as far as i understand it has problems both in security and in trustworthiness (it constantly sends your info to some server).
Umm I remember encountering some more but they were all basically forks of those primary three .
anyone knows anything?
thank you.
I would suggest Private Browser by Keepsolid Inc. It may be a branch of one of your aforementioned browsers, but it works. I dunno, it receives constant updates, and it protects everything you do from what I have experienced. Try it out...

Puffin Browser or Dolphin Browser. I used to use Dolphin but it got buggy. I don't know how it is now, but I've heard they added Flash support. Puffin browser has Flash support and renders sites well. It also has gaming controls and a touchpad mouse control.
Firefox has the additional benefit that the uBlock Origin extension works. The Chrome version only works with desktop, not mobile

thx for the response. am i to understand correctly that puffin browser direct all of your traffic through its servers?
also, do you have any particular reason to trust Dolphin or is it just general experience? (I vaguely remember the company was spying after user urls, or something similar, some years back ).

I don't know if Puffin directs traffic through it servers, but I do know that Opera Mini does.
Opera Mini is also a good browser. I'm on Tracfone (on my main phone) and I get 1200mb per year. Divided up, its 100mb per month. To add data it cost about $33.33 per gig. It's highly overpriced.
As for Dolphin, back a few years ago I was looking for a browser that would render desktop sites like on a desktop. Dolphin did better than Firefox for me at the time so I used it. It also had some add-ons that I used as well and the features were nice.
Chrome was to slow and buggy to use, Firefox was a little slow, and I didn't like Opera (not talking about the mini version which I liked). Opera got rid of bookmarks (which I more frequently used) and just overall kind of sucked.
If you're wanting privacy, you're best to stay away from using Tor ( the government recently developed a new system for tracking Tor users). I wouldn't recommend proxies either (as some are malicious and want to snoop). Use a VPN instead, there's many to choose from and some may be more private than others. Some are free and some don't require an app to use (as they use android's built-in VPN settings). Be sure to do your research first.

Thank you, that is an interesting info.
In terms of privacy, don't you worry about Operas handling of your information?
About TOR I don't know if I wanted to use it but I am a little interested in the subject, what recent government technique are you referring to? I did a google search but I'm not sure what is new...
And you right, I do want privacy, but involving a third party like a VPN... Unless I'm on a public wifi... how smart is that? I thought about the old fashioned device-trusty browser-my router/provider antena -my isp- the requested website model...
Anyway at the moment I need a secure browser.
oh and thx.

Firefox has the additional benefit that the uBlock Origin extension works. The Chrome version only works with desktop, not mobile

I don't worry much about Opera Mini. It's really my only option for Tracfone, since the data is so expensive. Basically I can make 100mb last more like 1gb. However some sites break, and any video I watch I watch usually in 144p.
As for Tor, it can be exploited in a number of ways. One being malicious nodes. Another is by your mouse movements. https://www.hackread.com/tracking-tor-users-with-mouse-movements/
If you really want privacy, the best way to get it is to go completely off grid. Otherwise just abandon using sites that require sign in or accounts, cookies, plugins or other scripts, and use a VPN from a public place on a computer with an amnesic operating system like Tails.
Ok, cool, thank you.
At the moment I don't need to worry about data usage (wifi), but if ever the need arises, I'll keep your idea in mind.
As for the privacy issue, well, I think I'll stave off for a while with my disappearance from the world, at least until I'll learn to properly hunt for the most dangerous game...
But yeah, I get your point.
Anyway, thanks man, , and if anyone else has any more suggestions for secure trusted browsers, that would be great.
