google nav voices - G1 Android Development

is there a way we can change the voice in google nav?

This needs to be in Q&A but for goodwill;
Settings -> Speech Synthesis -> Language

interesting thought...
Actually it could potentially be in the correct forum... it would be an android development.. modifying the apk.. rewriting code.. DEVELOPING... the first person that asked "can we get nav to run on non droid phones" probably asked in this same forum... I agree that people need to search and post in the correct forum... but I also think that too many people here think they are mods.. its like in 3rd grade.. when EVERYONE was going "SHHHHH" trying to quiet everyone else down... .. (incase you dont get it.. the ones going SHHHH are making all the noise")...
can we just let the mods close threads.. or move them.. and let them handle it.. thats why they get paid the big bucks... oh wait.. lol
Being someone that likes to read the different threads.. it gets old sifting through the 100 people (one with 23 posts) that say wrong thread.. yada yada...
I dont know how the heck you could change the voice... I don't think it would be worth doing so.. just because there are so many other things that could be developed that people are seriously interested in (like a perfect port of eclair.. etc.. ...
I mean.. i guess, if you wanted, you could potentially change the pitch or the speed at which the voice talks.. making it sound different.. but beyond that I dont think it would be a possible task..
good thought tho!

Well it worked for me.

It worked for me... I rather enjoy the British English language. Thanks for the tip.

Use the British voice, its the the clearest one, you could also set the voice to speak slower for you.

I believes google nav uses the voices from TTS, so if I am correct the task would be to find out how to add voices to the TTS app, not google nav

yeah
That is correct sir.

In the droid commercial showing off g-nav the voice sounds like the female copilot voice, is there a way we can implement this?!

Anyone know why these programs keep auto starting?

I was wondering if anyone knows why these programs are auto starting. I closed them via advanced task killer and they keep coming back.
They are:
- messages: I use handcent. I don't use the stock one, and I turned off notifications and defaulted handcent as my text program.
- com.coremobility.app.vnotes: not sure what this is.
- Sprint navigation: I have gps turned off.
I get the same thing plus Google Voice, Voice Dialer, Voicemail I have Google Voice set to never be used I never use Voice Dialer, and Voicemail just pops up occasionally

Uh, if you will never use Google Voice, then why in the world is it installed?
hanscent works off of the stock apps cache, it cant keep threaded convos without the stock (crap) app.
core.mobility.app.vnotes is visual voicemail
sprint nav is a pain and could be trashed at any time for better efficiency. Unneeded for those with google maps installed, imo
I have google voice set to never be used but that doesn't mean I never use it
google maps has navigation?
Is there anyway I can keep them from opening until needed?

google maps has text, not voice navi...thats enough for me. Google Navigation will have full navigation with voice.
as far as an autokill, I'm not sure what can be done to stop them. In autostarts, it shows you what environments some processes start in, and some seem quite unrelated (Sprint Navi starts with sms received). I'd say get taskiller free and pluck them off whenever you notice the phone getting laggy
Alright. Thanks.
is there a better navi we can download ( besides google maps )
What about a better keyboard?
So I was determined to figure out how to disable these apps from autostarting and I just figured it out. Ha. Now I just need to see if I can make it run with the install of fresh rom or if it will be a separate thing. I'll let you all know when I get it figured out.

I'm not sure on the navi, all of them are pretty heavy on the memory. Sprint Navi is quality, it's just bloated, IMO. I don't travel alot so it's not a necessity to me.
keyboard- the best is better keyboard, it's a paid app but it's an upgrade from stock. I'm still on stock and with the added speed boost from .7, it seems alot more precise

Visual Voice Mail

Developers,
Is there any way to make Visual Voice Mail work with Goog Voice instead? I refuse to pay $2/mo on TOP of $29/mo for VVM. Should be free in my opinion. I'd like to redirect VVM to contact GV instead so I don't have to go into the GV app to see my vm's.
Thanks.
I do the same and have the google voice app on my phone. But 9 times out of 10 im on a PC anyway and check it there.
just install the official google voice app from the market, it will walk you through on setting up no-answer call forwarding so when you dont pick up it forwards to your google voice vmail box.
comes in handy when you can just glance at the transcript and decide if its worth listening to

I might be misunderstanding -- but why is this needed? There's a dedicated app for Google Voice that works great, and you can remove VVM entirely when rooted. I'm confused why anyone would want to use an app specifically designed for one service on a different service, when a perfectly good app exists for that different service... is it just an aesthetic thing?
Absolutey don't mean to be rude, just trying to understand the reasoning!

Well, maybe it's me, but I don't like having to go into two diff. apps to get the job done. I HATE having to switch apps to get this done. Not only that, but going into the Messaging app, and not being able to use part of it (I can't remember off the top of my head, but maybe dialer also) just reminds me of how much Verizon is trying to nickel and dime me. We pay $30 extra a mo. for service. That should be ALL inclusive, but NO! $2 extra for voice mail, $5 extra for messages, $30 extra for tethering... I mean seriously?
And seeing that non-working VVM in the Messaging/Dialer just extremely P!$$3$ me off! Not to mention that even though GV is GREAT, and well interfaced, it still doesn't work as seamlessly as the telco's original.

Google voice is not directly linked to your cell phone number.. Google voice assigns you a number and then links it up to your phone. It's true though that you can get google voice to act as your visual voice mail provider for the cell phone number you have.. but it is a bit buggy..
I am with the OP.. if there is a way to use the built in VVM without paying..I'll be all over it.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on the buggy part.... Google Voice works really well (been using it for 2 months). It's free and has more features than Verizon. To be honest, I thought the Verizon VVM was a lot more buggy than Google's.
My 2 cents...
I used youmail on my blackberry, and its only better on the incredible.

I second that- I set up GV to be my VM service for my cell and even set up personalized greetings for almost everyone in my contact list. The transcriptions are not perfect, but i get the gist- and if I'm really curious, I just listen to the VM.

Although nowhere is it clear cut on what "development" actually scopes, it has been the senior mods practice to keep development to ROM cooking/system hacking. Since this is clearly an app thread, I am moving it to the correct forum, yet leaving it linked in development. Please keep the above in mind before starting a new thread. This is not a reprimand, just some info and reminder. Thanks
so is there any way to get the visual voicemail that comes preinstalled on the Dinc free? i want to use it because the GV is laggy on mine but i dont want to pay the 2.99 a month for it.

[Q] Navigation voice problem

Hi
I am having an issue with this navigation
Whenever I pick a location to go to and start navigating the navi voice would start talking nonsense for 5 minutes and won't shutup.
This happens whenever it announces a turn ahead or any other announcements.
It just starts talking..."Slash synthesis www. blah blah blah version 1.0 speech blah blah blah..." and so on for literally 5 minutes.
Before I used navi I did change the voice feature to samsung instead of pico, because I dont like pico voice, but I changed it back after this problem yet did not fix.
Can anyone help or have this problem?
I had this happen to me too!
I had changed the voice to the Samsung voice b/c I thought it sounded better (from the test sequences in the Settings menu)
Next time I used Navigation it did the same crazy stuff as you mentioned
Changing back to the stock Android "pico" voice fixed it.
Perhaps corruption of the Samsung software that was installed? Anyone know if there is a way to re-load the Samsung voice software? (I may reset my device anyway, so we'll see if that helps...I'll let you know!)
Thank you.
will be waiting
Sorry to be off topic, but I didn't realize you could change voices. I googled it but didn't find anything immediately. How do you change to Samsung voice?
Btw, here's a list of free "voices". I dunno if they work or not. But I'll post in case anyone else is interested.

before i got the skyrocket i was planning on getting the SGS2 and was trolling the forums for a week or so.. i saw people complain of the exact same problem on xda (or might have been androidforums?)
might want to check there to see if they found a fix
which SGS2? att?
Also can you link me to it if possible?
yup, i was trolling sgs2 at&t forums, but i assume it applies to all sgs2's ?
anyone find a solution to this problem?
i really want to use the samsung voice instead of the pico one.
Also I couldnt find the forum with this in the other SGSII forums if someone can maybe give me a link. thank you
in android forums there are a few threads that talk about the Samsung TTS engine being broken and it seems switching back to pico fixes it.
http://androidforums.com/samsung-ga...e-having-samsung-tts-navigation-problems.html

http://androidforums.com/samsung-galaxy-s2-international/406629-strange-voice-problem-navigator.html
Yes, switching back to the Pico voice works, but, man, does Pico suck. The Samsung TTS engine is much better. Wish that any of those threads, actually had some sort of fix.
I agree, Pico sucks. reason why I want to change to Samsung TTS.
I would really like to figure this out.

I'm pretty sure this hot word feature was removed due to Apple's lawsuit, too similar in functionality to Siri.
I know you're talking about the OTA update, and I'm running hp420's rom on my NS4G, so there are likely differences, but when you open up Google Now, what does the search bar say? Does it just say "Search" or does it say (as mine does) "Search, or say Google"??
Yeah, I had it in the first 4.1 builds, then once the official 4.1.1's started appearing it was gone. This was after the incident where they had to stop selling Galaxy Nexii for a week. It looks like that feature was dumped to get the injunction lifted.

AHHHH that explains it. Thought I was going crazy.
I'm sure you could flash an older version of Google Now taken from one of the ROMs where it is functional.
Hmm, I thought the lawsuit with Siri is regarding the result of the search, nothing to do with how the search is triggered right? There's no like "siri" hotword or something.
However, I don't really get the purpose of this hotword, as I will still need to unlock the phone and press the Search button anyway, might as well just press the "mic" icon on the top right at the google search "widget"?
That's my best guess on the issue, it makes sense. It appears that this as the only thing that changed for the official 4.1.1 release. Or maybe google deemed it not worthy of the Nexus S, like Face Unlock... Wonder if Nexus 7 and Galaxy Nexus might still have this feature.

To have results like in the video you have to change Google Now language to English US and force searching on google.com (in google now settings).
The hotword is only a "cool" feature, with practically no use (unless it would work globally, not only with the google now screen) but I would like to test it out

True, that has been my experience as well - they are utterly useless. I do hope though that the addition of Google Assistant doesn't become the fiasco that the addition of BP/ECG and/or Samsung Pay is - it really seems like Samsung doesn't give a flying duck, sometimes...
