I have a HTC Touch HD running Windows Mobile 6.1.
Also using Blackberry Connect to provide wireless synchronisation to email, contacts and appointments via my corporate BES.
Have the SoftMaker Office 2008 for Pocket PC to allow me to work on word, Excel and Powerpoint files on my mobile device.
The SoftMaker Office 2008 programs (Testmaker, Planmaker and Presentations) are all associated with the appropriate file file types.
For example if I click an an excel file the file is opened for editing by Planmaker, not pocket excel.
The Problem.
I receive office type documents as attachments in my windows mobile device email. However when I open the attachements from within the eMail the default pocket word/office applications are used to show me the attachment instead of the Softmaker applications.
I work in EH&S and the majority of attachents I receive are Incident Notification Forms consisting of large mutil tabed excel sheet. Because they are large and they take a long time and considerable space to fully download.
I am happy to be able to see the initial part of the attachment (with option to download more) but I would like to see this in Planmaker as pocket excel screws the formating so badly I cannot read the summary information (displayed on the initial tab on the spreadsheet) which I need to read to determine if I should download the entire file to my mobile device for immediate action or wait until I am back in the office.
Is there a way to associate an alternative application (eg Planmaker and Textmaker) other than Pocket Word/Excel to handle attachements in the windows mobile e-Mail Client?
I have asked this of the Softmaker Office Support team but they were unable to provide a solution.
Hope I have explained my issue appropraitly, any help greatly appreciated.

I have few Powerpoint 2003 files on my desktop, which I want to see on my XDA IIi with ClearVue software. But on tranferring the file to pocketpc, it fails to open with ClearVue, stating that it is can not open this version of powerpoint. Any suggestions ?

I’ve been asked (see the comments section at the bottom) two strictly mail attachment-related questions lately:
can you mass-select/save mail attachments from any Pocket PC mailer client?
can you see attachments sent from the desktop Outlook operating in HTML mode?
As this information is missing from my well-known Mailer Roundup (the definitive source of everything Pocket PC mailing-related), I’ve decided to devote some time to it to find out how the Pocket PC mailer applications behave in this respect.
Note that I’ve tested the latest versions (FlexMail 2007 was released some 10 days ago (08/30), nPop 1.08 (see download page) about a month ago (08/14) and ProfiMail 2.55 some 3 days ago (09/06); of course, I’m using the latest nightly build of QMail) of all the tested applications.
First, the first question is easier to answer: you can not mass-select in Messaging, but you can do this in two other clients: FlexMail 2007 and Qmail.
The answer to the second question is a bit more complicated. First, if you only have access to a Pocket PC, the only way to retrieve attachments from Outlook (the infamous “winmail.dat” problem) mails is using FlexMail 2007. It’s the only Pocket PC mailer client to have support for parsing winmail.dat for attachments (but NOT for rendering information! All it can do is finding the attachments in winmail.dat). If you use other clients, you’ll need to, for example, upload winmail.dat to your desktop computer, decode it there and then send it back to your Pocket PC.
Incidentally, if you want to know how such a file is sent out by Outlook, take a look at this shot. As can be seen, there are only two E-mail parts: a simple text one and winmail.dat itself. That is, Outlook doesn’t include these attachments right to the mail itself (then, any attachment-capable mailer would be able to access these) but inside winmail.dat. This is why no Pocket PC-based mailer clients are able to see these attachments (except for FlexMail). This is a major mistake of the Outlook engineers (unless they wanted to lock their users into Outlook), which could easily have been avoided by simply adding the attachments in a mail-conform way.

I am looking for a notes program that lets me add both text and small sketches/drawings or even photo's to my notes... (sometimes a picture says more then 100 words)
And the program should come with a nice system to archive my notes or even add them to my outlook agenda.
You don't say what platform/device, but you might want to look at PhatNotes for Outlook from http://www.phatware.com
What about OneNote Mobile - part of MS Office Mobile 6.1 - that allows you to type or handwrite items, plus you can insert pictures or take a picture to insert into the note; the PC version will synchronise with the mobile version and you can then add notes as Outlook tasks.
Just a couple of thoughts from me...there's bound to be others

One Note is a good solution but I also use Evernote, it's a free note app that works with a free desktop client and also a web interface (all free). This program lets you take typed notes, written notes, picture notes, pictures in notes, and audio notes. It then uploads the information to a web version and syncs with a desktop client provided by them. I use evernote only because I use an HTC Diamond and an iPhone 3G (depending on the day is the phone I use) and Outlook does not sync notes to iPhone so I use evernote to sync my notes everywhere. I would however prefer to use One Note just because it does not need to sync to an online portal.
OneNote Mobile is included with the version of MS office which comes with oneNote for pc
I can suggest Mobile Sketcher if you need to add notes to pictures

I am currently using an old Imate JAMin, but i am soon upgrading to a Touch HD, and with the big screen it seems perfect to make little technical sketches along with my notes. So actually i am looking for an application to use on the HD...
I will certainly have use for mobile sketcher too, its not exactly what i was thinking about but its awesome to add handwritten text and little sketches to pictures i take from technicall stuff.

With phatnote not being able to save notes on the flash ram, i guess it will be onenote (which i allready own on my PC, but never used as it came with the office suite, and i tend to never make notes behind my PC, but allways en route in the field)
I tested Onenote on my JAMin and it doesn;t fit the bill...
I can not make any sketches/drawings inside my notes....(i can only add pictures and soundrecordings)... thats the most essentiall thing it need to do...
I'm running WinVista x64, which uses the Windows Mobile Device Center to manage syncing instead of ActiveSync. From reading on this forum, I understand that Office Mobile included on the AT&T Fuze is Office 2007, right? I'm using Office 2003 on my PC and I can't get the Word, Excel, or OneNote files to actually synchronize. I don't mean putting them on the device; I'd like to update one file on the Fuze and have the corresponding file on the PC updated next time I sync. Does Windows Mobile 6.1 and WMDevice Center really not support this functionality?! I can't figure out how to make this work. When I click on the "Files" and "manage settings" (or something like that) I get an unhandled exception error. Do I need to reinstall WMDevice Center on my PC? I also tried Documents to Go (3rd party software). I like their Word and Excel applications better than Office Mobile, but the Adobe Reader LE is better than PDF to Go. However, DocsToGo doesn't even support syncing documents on the Windows Mobile platform (or at least not with Vista and WMDevice Center).
Please help! I'm really floundering around here with this thing. There's so much to like about this phone (and so much that I do like about this phone) that I find it impossible to believe that I can't sync changes in a Word or Excel file with my phone and PC; something I've done on the PalmOS for years now!
I have a HTC Touch HD running WM 6.1
Have the Softmaker Office suite installed and have used Total Commander to associate excel .xls and word .doc files to open with Softmaker's Planmaker and Textmaker applications.
From within file manager this works perfectly.
Problem: Unfortunately any excel or word files received as email attacments are opened using the default pocket excel and word applications which screws up the formatting.
Can anyone help me to change the default applications for opening these attachements from within email?
