How do you make a Update.zip for Apps? - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Once again let me preface this by saying that I am a Noob. However, I have been swapping roms for the past couple of months with no major problems. The one annoyance is every time I install a new rom I have to go through the hassle of reloading all my favorite apps.
I wanted to know how to make a update.zip folder that will actually load on my Google Ion for my apps. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you know how to sign a ROM its no Problem, if you dont ...

Lol, that would be a big "No."

You would have to be able to sign .zip files for it to work, You could have your favorite apps on the side so you could open your rom on the computer and add them in the apps folder.
Your prolly better off installing them individually because some roms (mostly skins) wont run with some apps although this is VERY rare!

is it not possible to resign i.e. the cyanogen rom after adding a few apps?

I am new to the signing of roms but from what i can see it is possible and seems to be a little easier than I originally thought. I just started with signing last night and was able to take parts of three different roms put them together and was able to sign it and sucessfully loaded and installed with no problems to my mytouch. Just to give an example I used the bootscreen from Qteks rom along with the transparent lockscreen from evils sense rom and combined them with wikeds rom cause I liked his icon pack. signed it and loaded on first shot with no issues.

How To Theme Develop for Windows For Dummies in 10 easy steps (( no your really not a dummy its just an easy name for a how to lol))
well i'm going to give this a shot in the dark on how to create this how to be as easy as possible
1st
download these files if you don't already have them
JAVA
http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp
download the JDK
Winrar
http://rarlabs.com/rar/wrar380.exe
and Auto-sign.zip
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?uwzjjydnm2r
2nd
Download my included Auto-sign files.
what it contains.
the Test keys file..
and an update.zip file
and a batch file i created called auto-sign to make things easier to sign
3rd
after you have downloaded my Auto-sign
then you extract it to where ever you want.
4th.
use the update.zip included if your a Beginner it includes my windows 7 theme .. i edit so many files that it's easier to tell what does what and whats goiing to go where. now open that zip file DON'T EXTRACT just open it using winrar..
5th
When it is open go to Framework.. and open Framework-res.apk
NOW IF THE APK. POPS UP AND SAYS IT CANT OPEN BLAH BLAH SELECT A PROGRAM AND THEN SELECT WINRAR.
6th
Once you open Framework-res.apk KEEP THIS WINDOW AND UPDATE.ZIP WINDOW OPEN!!
then just extract the whole Res Folder to where ever you like this makes it easier to see what files you wish to edit.. most of the files will be in the folder called Drawable
7th
open up your favorite photo editor .. i use photoshop along with 90% of the people who Graphic Design... Edit your pictures Remember a file with a .9 can mess up your phone so edit those carefully.. and save what ever pictures you have
8th
Now drag the whole Res Folder .. back into the Framework-res.apk
now your update.zip file is going to say files has been changed to framework-res blah blah do you wish to save it . click yes .. now your framework has been updated you can close everything out
9th
go to the Auto-sign folder.. and open Auto-sign this will now sign your update.zip .. and rename it to update_sign.zip .. now just delete your old update.zip.. rename update_signed.zip to update.zip
10th
put it on the root of your memory card.. reset using green call + menu + end
then hold home and end .. until the recovery mode shows up .. then press Alt+S and hope your device isn't bricked
Disclaimers
I'm not responsible if your brick your device.. but i will help to the best of my abilty and if i can't help i'm sure XDA will
i don't sign every file in my update.zip i just sign update.zip .. and hey it works lol..
For ADP or RC 8 versions .. just download your favortie ADP theme or RC 8
put it in the Auto-sign folder.. and rename it to update.zip if it isn't already then just follow my steps

the easy way
what i do is a .bat file with my info in it
place all the stuff you want installed into a folder
and create ad .bat file(notepad save as select all files from dropdown the put .bat on end of file name\)
mine is all.bat and inside looks like this
adb remount
adb push D:\android\install\apns-conf.xml /system/etc
adb push D:\android\install\wpa_supplicant.conf /data/misc/wifi
adb install D:\android\install\apps\android.tether.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.a0soft.gphone.aTrackDog.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\org.freecoder.widgets.overclock.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.metago.astro.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.qype.radar.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.arron.taskManager.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.rerware.android.MyBackupPro.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.curvefish.widgets.silentmodeonoff.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.mattwach.trap2.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.tapjoy.coloroid.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.schwimmer.android.mmsextract.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\com.google.android.stardroid.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\de.android_telefonie.appmanager.apk
adb install D:\android\install\apps\MyBackupPro.apk
adb shell
reboot
and i do it when the setup wizard starts so when it reboots my apn and wireless are installed

here is the one twisted made... its simple and eazy... btw when I was getting sick of restoring all my apps every time I flashed a new rom, I searched for it and learned how to do it without posting once... but thats just me
download incremental here
http://twistedumbrella.slackdev.com/Incremental.zip
Back your apps up as an update in case you do a wipe using this:
Use Incremental_original.zip
Back all the apps up you want.
Open the archive and replace the apps in the data/app directory.
Sign the archive like a regular update and place in root of SD card.
Flash the update you want. When finished, flash Incremental.zip
Reboot the phone and both the update and apps will be installed.
to learn how to sign files look at this thread...
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4721739

You can avoid the hassle easily by going apps to sd. After that, any rom that enables apps to sd (almost every rom) will automatically have your apps installed upon first boot.
That being said, next time post in "General" first. We don't want this section to get as messed up as it has become in the Dream forum.

lol have you noticed this forum? i guess better late than never...
as every other post says "this should be in general" or "this should be in Q&A"
but then again I cant say Ive ever seen a clean forum... sad
Also if your gonna say "this should be [where ever]" you shouldn't also provide an answer to the initial question... What does that teach? Post where ever you want because you'll still get an answer? That doesn't help your cause.

How-to Theme Development

To create themes, or to edit themes to your liking, you will need a working knowledge of android, adb, how to resign apk's, knowledge of your own O/S.
Before you start be aware that you will probably end up wiping your phone once, if not more. So lets go over the things that you will need.
You will need JF's RC30, RC8, or ADP1 V1.3, depending on what version you intend to create for.
Here is the link to these: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=466174
You will also want to get the dev bootloader installed on your phone and to HIGHLY suggest everyone trying your theme to install it as well.
Link to dev bootloader: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=455860
You will also need to resign all the apks located in /system/app and framework-res.apk located in /system/framework. When you push all of these to your phone, you will need to do a wipe.
JesusFreke was kind enough to build a custom signing tool for me that would allow me to right click on an apk and resign it from there. I am posting it here for others to use as well. Note that this is a courtesy of JF, so thank him for it. I cannot stress how much time this has saved me and will save you.
Here is the link: Http://www.FightForthePits.com/testsign(2).zip
Before using this you need to know how to set this up:
I will assume that you have the sdk downloaded and extracted somewhere(if not, do that now), extract both files to the tools directory of your sdk.
Now you will need to add the tools dir of your sdk to the environment variable CLASSPATH.
To do this, right click on My Computer click properties, then choose the tab that says advanced. Click the button that says environmental variables. Go to system variables find the one that says CLASSPATH, double click it, go to the end of variable value. There should be a semicolon ; at the end. type in the path to the testsign.jar located in the tools directory of your SDK, for example the path to my testsign.jar was c:\sdk\android-sdk-windows-1.0_r1\tools\testsign.jar If CLASSPATH is not in your system variables then create it.
If you find the right click menu not working for some reason you can type the following in cmd to sign your files: java testsign whateverfiletosign
Now right click the reg file that you extracted and choose to install it, or merge.
Now, right click an apk, do you see an option that says ResignApk? If not hit the windows key and R at the same time. Type in regedit. go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT and expand it. Now find .apk and click it. Double click on (Default) and erase apk_auto_file. Hit ok and close the Reg editor. Now right click an apk and the option ResignApk should be there.
Now through doing this you have done two things, first off you have made the resigning process extremely easy, secondly you will not have to cd to the tools dir of the sdk to use adb or any other tool in the sdk.
You will also need a version of linux installed or running vmware with linux, so that you can create an update file which will install the theme onto the users phone.
You need to make sure that you do this correctly, because if you don't then you will have the potential to create problems for people trying to install your theme. You also need to be specific in addressing what version your theme is for, RC8, RC30, or ADP1. Make sure every file gets signed. Make sure you test the update.zip before you release it.
Every .apk contains the images relating to itself. However, every apk has the ability to use the images in framework-res.apk. The images for every apk is located inside of res and more specifically in folders that are named Drawable, drawable-land, drawable-port, etc. Some things you cannot edit unless you rebuild the entire apk from source, which we will not go into here.(another tutorial, another time) Just know that at this time you SHOULD NOT edit, or even open images with the extension .9.png. If you do you will have problems...Trust me. These are special images called ninepatch images and android resizes these images to fit wherever android, or any other apk, needs it to. if you do open them or edit them they will no longer render correctly when resized. I believe that in order to edit these you must do so and then put them into the source and rebuild the entire apk.
Before getting started you must also realize that you cannot simply resign one or two apk's and stick them in your phone and expect them to work. You must resign every apk inside of /system/app and framework-res.apk and put them on your phone at the same time.
To simplify this process for you though, I have provided an update which will do all of this for you. Note that these updates will not completely wipe your phone, your apps will be retained, however, they will require you to re-enter your Google info, and you will lose you call history.
Links down
Just put the correct update.zip, depending on what version you are running, onto your sd card, boot into recovery and hit alt + s.
Now you can push your own apk's one at a time without re-wiping your phone.
Now, your ready to start changing things up.
You will now need to open the apk, which you can do by adding .zip after .apk, effectively changing it to a zip. Note that if you are using windows you will need to unhide known file extension types.
See here to unhide known file extension types for Xp: http://www.mediacollege.com/microsoft/windows/extension-change.html
See here to unhide file extension types for Vista: http://maximumpcguides.com/windows-vista/how-to-change-a-file-extension/
After changing the apk to a zip open it go to res and copy the folders that have drawable in their name. Go to your desktop, or wherever, create a new folder called Images, or whatever. Open the folder, paste the drawable folders in there. Now you can see what the files look like without opening them. Btw, you may also want to add -frame, or -launcher, to the end of the folders you cope over to keep them separated from others.
Finally, you've edited the images put them all in the apk renamed it back to an apk and resigned it. Now it's time to push it to your phone and see the changes you've made.
Important! : Whenever pushing files to the phone NEVER do it while the phone is running. Do this in recovery mode! If you do this while the phone is running normally you will begin to lose space in /system.
So, boot into recovery plug your phone in and open a cmd prompt. From the cmd prompt type adb shell mount /system then type the following: adb push c:\whereveryourfileis\whateveryourpushing.apk /system/app (system/framework if your pushing framework-res.apk)
Now reboot your phone. If it doesn't boot, try doing a wipe, if that doesn't work reinstall an update and try again. There are alot of things people can do wrong, I can't explain them all here. If you get real stuck, you can ask for help here or contact me on Gtalk [email protected].
So now your theme is done and your ready to make an update.zip for others to install your theme.
This must be done in LINUX! Not WINDOWS! Yes it may work for you if you do it in windows but other people's phones will enter an indefinite loop! Just do it from Linux! If you absolutely cannot make your own update.zip, contact me and we'll see if I can make one up for ya.
I have created a template for you to make your own update.zip. Just download, open in Linux, and add the system apps to app, and framework to framework. Zip it up, SIGN IT, TEST IT YOURSELF, and then distribute it!
Empty update.zip template: Http://www.FightForthePits.com/Androidstuff/update_empty.zip

JF could also save theme users a wipe by resigning /system/app/* and /system/framework/framework-res.apk in his builds with the test keys. Nice tutorial, btw.
However it doesn't. I have used that to no avail. I believe you need to edit the images, put them in the source then rebuild the apks from the source.
As for JF's update, it does not currently wipe your phone after install. So, for him to do this he would have to have his update do a wipe. So technically, they would still have to do this initial wipe.

Good point. I thought you could simply drop a similarly dimensioned PNG in but apparently there is some metadata that only the android tool can create.

True, but a user who is upgrading to a JF update after having put in customized (and test-key signed) system apps will have to wipe again anyway =) Anyone using custom themes will have to wipe every time a JF update (or any update) comes out. However if JF resigns, custom theme users would not have to wipe and stock theme users only have to wipe once. (Nevermind the fact I think everyone should wipe when updating...)
thx stericson this will help big time how long before I can get resigned rc30 last night when you said all the apk. need to be resigned I was like this is going to be a long night but I see jf hooked you up save some big time with his resigning tool

The resigned apps have been released, each update file will resign all of apps in /system/app and framework-res.apk. However, these updates make no changes to them whatsoever...Meaning your phone will look just like a brand new phone without any modifications.

Issues with using the update.zip above
Hi all,
I just wanted to point out that after I applied the update.zip above and rebooted applications kept force closing randomly and constantly even through the initial setup (where you have to click the green android to start).
Prior to this, I had JF's RC30 1.3, and the engineering bootloader V2 no sigcheck.
First I did just a alt+s then a alt-w and alt+s. And still nothing.
I'm new to all this so I'm not even sure where to begin troubleshooting. Should I be using the HardSPL?
Thanks in advance and I appologize if this isn't the right place for this post.
Update:
After reflashing with JF's 1.3 RC30 and the problem persisted I noticed that there was a new release 1.31 and this has fixed the problem. I hope this helps anyone else who runs into the same problem.
I still don't know what went wrong though, can anyone shed some light on this? thanks.
Truly there's no telling, sounds like J'f's update fixed it. Can I ask what version you tested?
I would also like to announce that now, thanks to JF, again, you do not have to wipe your phone completely to apply the resigned app updates. However, you will have to re-enter your google info and your call history and other minor things will be gone, but all of your apps will be retained.

I found the cyclon boot effect images in in framework-res/assets/images,
is there any way to replace the android boot image with those images?
Is there anyway to make the theme with a custom boot screen? Also is there a way to change the second boot screen(The one that says Android and has the little robot)
i tried using the testkeys from JF to resign my apks, but the update still says there is not signature =[
hello, I used the tutorial and everything worked great. I'm trying to change the background to the notification section but I can't find that file. Could you tell me where it is? Thank you.

Enable Superuser.apk & Enhance ROSIE UI FOR HERO ROM [Re-Updated FIXED]

Hello Guys!!!
Sorry for the problems caused There Were More Two Widgets Missing Other Than Messaging widget to be coppied to Internal Memory Namely The Clock & Contact Widgets, So They Are Added In The Re-Update, The Whole .exe Is To Be Downloaded Again, Sorry For This.
Even The superuser enabler package(.exe) is fixed...But If U already Have the old .exe , just get the attached script & replace it with the old one...

ryanmo5 opened this thread saying it didn't work and it messed up his home screen.
Thank you ryan for trying this out and letting us know.
i tried this and it says no such file or directory on all files. And then it says it cant find .apks for all files to install. Ok i didnt even look at my home screen all my widgets are gone except the clock. When i try to add the htc widgets im left with only 4 widgets.
Also the Install-Enable-SU.bat did not work for me. Was stating batch was inoperable.
Yeah, the UI tweak totally borked my phone. It locks up at the HTC logo. I went back to ion till tomorrow.
WEE!!!
AWESOME. This is fantastic. Thank you for your hard WORK!! much appreciated! Seems to have worked like a charm for me and i can really notice a huge speed boost especially when going back to the home screen.
I have found my HEROOO!
Oh and btw, when you do the part to optmize for Rosie, the folder that contains the apks should be renamed from Rosie to Files. That will make things work. It did for me.
I miss the Rosie UI lock screen though... its gone?
But wow incredibly speedy and even a lot more stable? Thank you sangeet.003 and all the other FANTASTIC developers on this forum who keep me and my G1 busy with fun goodies.
Here is a oddball question, couldn't someone just create a update.zip with all this done? I'm not familiar with signing pkgs and what not. So I'm not 100%.
i'm a mac user.
but i kind of smart when it comes to these things so i got it to work.
but for other mac users do you think you can just up load the files and post the
adb commands.

I think i read somewhere that it wouldn't be possible because of how big the update.zip would be which is why when flashing Hero, you need the ext2 to store the apps_2
the great thing is, if you just keep testing, reading and messing around with running everything from roms, scripts, commands and tweaks, you eventually get things to work and and you find a huge satisfaction and semi-understanding of it all and you find yourself appreciating the developers here for their work.
Wow its four in the morning and i think im on a strong sugar high because i never post.

well did a refresh of Hero and applied all the tweaks here (after renaming the folder as well) and all is wel. thanks a ton for this!
I was wondering if you could use app2sd after using this mod, or will this disable apps2sd?
Ok i did it and it works but there is a slight problem the messaging widget dosent show up. its completely gone. i read the batch file and its missing from the batch file. If you could re write it with the htc messaging app included then this app would be perfect. Or does anyone know how i could get the htc messagine widget back by myself

I think if you placed the "Files" folder onto c:/android (or wherever you put adb) and then:
adb push files/htcmsgwidgets.apk /data/app
that *might* work, not sure because I haven't tried it myself.

That is weird because i have super user and terminal working on mine just fine from JF previous install
a few widget's were missing..

also in the batch file, the msg widget was not reinstalled onto internal memory(probably just forgot to add that line)
so I redid his batch file to include the 2 missing widgets as well as adding the line for the msg widget and changed the folder to files
cause I know how lazy most of you are

and for the mac user's
just open the .bat file in text editor (.bat files are nothing more than text anyways) in there you can see each command that is run and do it yourself manually,...
yeah it's a ***** but I'm not about to figure out how to write a shell script for OSX on XP just to appease my old brethren, maybe pickup a copy of BBcode and insert the commands, don't know it that would even work, just a thought heh.
---credits to sangeet.003 for goin' through the trouble to make this batch files, I'm just an "editor"
everything worked perfectly and 20 times faster not exact but i see a huge difference just now noticed that the messages widget was missing so bout to add that thanks to all developers working hard im sticking with hero i know people love it as much as I do so it has to keep getting better

Creating a new theme, but how to create a usable update.zip (or other easy methods)

I started a theme the other day, and I'm moving through the files pretty quickly but without context it's hard to know which graphic is which. So I want to flash or apply the current work I'm doing so I can see where things are and how they look.
Right now I'm working through a deodexed version of Froyo so all the files should be in order. Assuming that I strip out all files but the graphics, how do I create a update.zip for it or use any other method? I'm new to Android so any help would be appreciated.
I'm guessing you already have the sdk installed?

Yup. SDK + Eclipse.
Emulator? no?
you can either figure out how to make them Metamorph compatible (sorry, can't give you advice on that, never done it)
Or you can put the images in the correct folder of whatever .apk they go in and make a flashable update.zip, basically replacing the existing .apk's with the full complete modded ones.
You'll need to put all the modded .apk's into a file structure that mimicks where they would be on the phone and zip that structure up with an update_script and sign the update.zip.
I would highly recommend you unzip some small flashable .zip and poke around in it to see the structure and look at the update_script.
This is a download link to a transparent tray mod I did. It replaces ONE .png but because I chose to make it a flashable .zip it requires replacing the framework-res.apk. Except for the actual .apk's you'll need to put in it, this .zip would be perfectly suitable to use as a base for your mods (and you're welcome to use it). If you did use it you would put your .apk's in the system/framework folder, delete the 3 cert files in the META folder, zip the system and META folders into "update.zip" and sign it using an autosign script.
fire away with any questions
ps, you don't need eclipse or the sdk for any of this but you will need an auto-sign script which is one of the tools in Avabox
AFAIK you couldnt use the emulator in the SDK to preview this stuff anyways because you can't get Sense running on the emulator, not to mention the emulator runs SOOOOO SLOOOOWWWWW. Even if you could get Sense running on the em I would bet you would spend less time making a nand, flashing your mods, checking them out and restoring your nand if you didn't like them than using an emulator to preview this stuff.

Thanks a lot. Seeing the file, it makes sense. In your simple example you modded the framework res APK -- did you have to sign that single APK or was it taken care of when you signed the update.zip? I've modded some apps already and I know that with single APKs you have to sign them so it can be installable again. Don't know if that is needed once you sign the update.zip.
BTW, I can't wait to release this theme. It makes Sense look substantially better.

Actually signing the .apk's is not necessary. If all you're doing is swapping out images just open the .apk's archinve with 7zip (or similar program) and drop the new .png's into the correct folder (almost always res/drawable-hdpi)
Signing the .zip makes it flashable, the .apk is usable whether you sign it into a .zip or not. Actually when you're testing stuff out I find it's much quicker to just push the modified .apk to the phone via usb, I don't make a flashable .zip until it's ready for sharing
If you push a framework file to the phone ADB REBOOT immediately.
Also, don't be surprised if some of your wallpaper gets reset to stock and your google account gets wiped out after reboot, comes with the territory

meh, you can use another compatable copy. I always just pull it first for 2 reasons: 1) I know its the one I'm using at the moment and 2) if you're gonna be using adb it's just convenient to have it right on c:\, less typing

This was very helpful to me as well; thanks!
Actually I just thought of a question. After you sign the file and it becomes update_signed.zip can you rename it to something else like BlahBlah.zip and have it still flash properly?
Tried twice and it failed. It would create to Meta files and not find the update script. Followed the directions but that still happened; any advice?

[Q] I want to make a theme...

But I don't exactly know how to get there.
I'm runing Wolfbreak's CM ROM V055, afraid to go to V06 because it might break my kernel install(still getting info on just what to do)
What I'm wanting is:
The status/pulldown bars(all icons except Wifi, and I want to keep Cyanogen 6's default slidey bar[the thing that ends up at the bottom]), and the animations from the theme used in SEMPITERNAL's Eternity 2 Build 0003a ROM. That will have to be ported to FroYo, I'm afraid(unless my theory at the bottom of this post will work).
I want the menu from LUCID-X10 by SicNside, with the black BG and white elements, but the png forthat i guess I'll have to negative a white hdpi one.
That's about it, the rest i want from arc theme which is default on my current ROM, including tickboxes, those arrows inside circles, the menu icons, etc.
My theory to sort of make this is to get the two involved APK's(default in CM and default in Eternity) onto my computer, and make them ZIP's. Then i can extract the drawable-hdpi folders from each and paste what I want from Eternity into Arc. Then I can replace the drawable-hdpi folder in the Arc framework file, and zip it at store.
That's where I stop knowing what I'm doing. Searching has not found me a guide on just how to make a framework-res.apk, nor even really making a theme altogether. All i can find is about xml files, resources, never anything about actually making the apk correctly.
Help, please?
I am stuck at the same point as you, I have no idea where to go from here :S
Anyone? I'm sure the two of us aren't the only ones...
Here's a zip of what I want. All I did was:
Took the framework-res.apk from the ETERNITY Rom and from the CM ROM, and pasted the png's i wanted from Eternity into drawable-hdpi-v4 in CM framework. Now, can someone make this work, please?
Its quite easy.
Just select the images you want to change.
Then open the framework-res.apk of your ROM with winrar or 7zip your choice.
Without extracting the files drag and drop the files to the winrar window in the right place. If you want to change images in drawable-hdpi migrate to res/drawable-hdpi and drag and drop images there.
Now close the archive and type this:
Code:
adb push <path to modified framework> /sdcard/framework-res.apk
adb shell mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock2 /system
adb shell dd if=/sdcard/framework-res.apk of=/system/framework/framework-res.apk
Make sure you take a backup with xrecovery before doing this. If you do something wrong you may end up in a bootloop. In that case just restore from backup and try again!

Grr, sorry but right now all my failure is just making that less clear. Type that where? Drag the files to the winrar/7zip window? Isn't that where i dont want them?
Ive followed all the different sets of instructions including yours on this forum as closely as i can make sense of them and always end up with a stream of FC's and reboot loops.
EDIT: does it only work on the stock kernel? I'm running Trip's kernel. I just pulled the framework apk then pushed that same apk back and it's still doing it.
EDIT 2: ok no stock kernel and its still doing it WHY THE HELL IS IT DOING THIS?!?!? I FLASHED THE SAME DAMN STOCK FRAMEWORK!
ok if i got the modded framework apk to my sdcard and used root explorer to paste it in, should that work? This laptop might be what's causing it
I have posted few tips here n there when ever people ask about it.
Check this for overall requirements
For your requirement, skip the optimization part out and just do image swap.
Like realunited123 said, dont extract, just open from 7zip, I use Win RAR and drag and drop the new image to the correct folder.
You need to remember few things here, check images name matches against old to new. Other important thing is resolution. you might get in to trouble if you take mpdi and put it to hdpi.
after updating the framwork I made a small template for you guys to play with.
Download attaches zip file open and go to
Framewrok-SJ.zip\system\framework folder and drag and drop the modified framework-res.apk
Dont try to install the attached file. its only a template for you guys to start working on....
After drag and drop you will see zip file size increased.
Simply copy to SD card and install via Xrecovery
You can try any framework to install like this without adb stuff
Remember to make a backup... because you will definitely screwup... we all have...... LOL

And one more thing, Is any sort of file transfer possible with ADB, or will i have to stick with WiFi File Explorer?

Thats good news.. one less problem to deal with....
create a folder call app on your pc and drag it to system folder in the zip file.
So you should have framework and app folders inside of it.
then copy Phone.apk & Contacts.apk and try to install via xrecovery.
there is a chance you might not be able to install as my initial signing of Zip file dosent included app folder and so MANIFEST.MF & CERT.SF dont have reference. on the other hand during installation Xrecovery dont check
key signature.
I didnt test this way so try, no harm will come to your phone.
Dont know about wifi explorer much. Im testing with adb generally. only final version im publishing in xrec.

In META-INF create \com\google\android folders for update-script file.
Make update-script a text file containing the following
Code:
show_progress 0.1 0
copy_dir PACKAGE:system SYSTEM:
show_progress 0.1 10
Be sure to add an extra blank line after "show_progress 0.1 10"
Compress META-INF and system folders to a zip, then move to your sd and sign with signAPKtic which is a free app in the market. Use "test keys" to sign. (signAPKtic is easiest to me,or you can use 1 of the methods Shiwantha suggested to sign)
I would also suggest zipaligning your apks before adding them to optimize your phone's performance when accessing them. Search zipalign on XDA and you'll find what you need...
*Edit- Also, X10 Mod Tool is great for pushing/pulling apks via adb without all the typing. I use it a LOT when testing different pieces of themes.

I think adb mask controller can do it in the zipalign tab> zipalign /system/app button.
And what format does the text file need to be in?
Signapktic is either telling me the zip doesnt exist or gives me an unzp error... and I supposed to me signing the apk's or the zip?
EDIT: I think I got it. Zip signer instead of signapktic. Let's see what my phone does.
Ok it looks like it worked.
Make sure there are no spaces in the zip's name. Looks like you got it!

[HOWTO] Theming your framework / apps for newbies ;)

It's not much, but I thought everyone should be able to theme their Framework
Requirements: WinZip(or any other zipping program), Android SDK, testsign, some graphics editor...
NOTE: This will work with theme apk's as well !!!
So what you need to start with is your framework files:
framework-res.apk, com.htc.resources.apk ... both are located in SYSTEM:framework/
These files are just renamed zip files, so rename them back to .zip and extract them (you can also edit them inside WINRAR or something, but it is more comfortable if you extract them)
In these, images are usually saved in res/drawable-mdpi or such, but you have to think here, allways modify all files from one resource
Now locate the images you want to edit but I only know how to edit .png files (.9.png files are for a different howto, probably not by me as I've never really mastered it)
Pick those you want to edit, and edit them (I'm not gonna tell you how here, I usually use photoshop to do that )
Once you have edited those images, it is recomended to optimize those png's (Firstly to make them smaller, but more importantly, most of the times the png's from Windows graphics editor didn't work for me...)
To optimize png's you can use:
OptiPNG: DOWNLOAD This one is drag'n'drop batch conversion capable...
Pngcrush: DOWNLOAD Command line utility, but it has more settings
...or something else, but I find these two the best
Once you have these optimized, copy and re-write them to folders you took them from to edit...
Now you need to zip these back, for framework files I was told it is usual to zip them as "store", but correct me someone if I'm wrong.
After you have zipped those, they will have to be re-signed. To do this, use testsign from code.google.com
Then run this in cmd line (or create a .bat file as I did, it's much easier):
Code:
java -classpath testsign.jar testsign [COLOR="DarkRed"]file.zip[/COLOR] [COLOR="DarkRed"]file-signed.zip[/COLOR]
Now that you have signed it, it is recomended to zipalign it:
(zipalign.exe is located in /tools in your SDK)
Run this in cmd line:
Code:
zipalign 4 [COLOR="DarkRed"]infile.zip[/COLOR] [COLOR="DarkRed"]outfile.zip[/COLOR]
(4 is alignment in bytes)
Now that you have aligned the .zip, rename it to the original name and then you just need to push it back to your phone:
Code:
adb shell mount /system
adb push [COLOR="DarkRed"]com.htc.resources.apk[/COLOR] /system/framework/[COLOR="DarkRed"]com.htc.resources.apk[/COLOR]
or
adb push [COLOR="DarkRed"]framework-res.apk[/COLOR] /system/framework/[COLOR="DarkRed"]framework-res.apk[/COLOR]
And you're done
I hope this helps someone! Enjoy!
note: This way you should be able to modify any apk I think
Very good.
Good initiative, thank you.
Lets hope that others will follow your example and contribute in this community,we need it.

One question... can i change the framework if i'm s-on? And if yes how? flash it through recovery or how?
LE: Thx for the info. I found out how to edit themes... i will create a cool one to upload here. I could edit the framework.....but i am s-on so no use for that.
Unfortunately, when you're unrooted, you can't push files to your system...
But this will work for those Theme apk's too... so grab a theme you like and you can edit it as easily as you would your framework It has a limited potential, but it's something for you S-ON users
Hmm, I skipped the push part and copied the file back over the one in the phone. Now my phone is stuck in a continuous loop on the "quietly brilliant" screen.
Any help? Where do I get a stock rom to flash?

Just enter recovery & factory reset, wipe, then wipe dev cache, then reflash your rom that you were using before the bootloop.
You can even swap icons in the framework of your rom then just flash (if you try to swap framework.apks or dialer.apks using a file manager you will delete or swap the file but this will cause loads or errors & force closes & then result in your bootloop!) Then just swap via a computer within the zip file then just flash in recovery as normal & if done right you wont get bootloops
