GPS Maps - without data - General Topics

I have a Samsung JACK. However, I don't use the data plan. I just don't have the need for it.
It would be nice, from time to time, to have access to GPS mapping. I've discovered the GPSTest trick that eliminates the small data usage at GPS startup. But, I don't have any maps.
I've looked at Garming and TomTom's offerings. However, I don't need $100 for the whole country. I don't need half the country. I don't even need 1/50th of the country. What I really would be interested in is getting maps on a city by city (or even just one county) basis.
Does anybody sell maps of just a city?
Is there any way to download maps of just one city and store it locally?
Google Maps is a free service... is there any way of saving an area of map to the device to recall it later?

I use, prefer and recommend TrekBuddy. You just have to make the maps of your desired region(s) beforehand, but there are tools for that as well.

gps without the use of data

hey, i was wondering if there is a software that does not use DATA with gps ... i want to load up the maps with maybe wi-fi and then use satellites to make it work ... any suggestions
iGO, TomTom, Garmin, etc. There's a lot, go have a look at them and see which you like best (iGO kills all imo).
thanks
google map cannot use the gps without a data connection, so im looking for an alternative.
but if data is used, how much is used? i only have 2 mb, so i turn data off to prevent going over.
google navigator
u can see ur data usage on google map by press menu --> help --> about. if u like google map as ur navigation friend but dont want to be connected each time u navigate try install google navigator.
get garmin xt
lots of forums have maps for it, very simple to use, inbuilt maps.
you need to either buy the maps or download them from some forum, no data usage
for no-data connection, it means you need the GPS program and maps preloaded...
I'd look at iGo Amigo and Navigon... they look the best in terms of features...
TomTom and Garmin Mobile XT exists for WM, but they're too plain
what gps program to use very much depend on where one live
as there is a world of difference between how often they update their maps
and how good maps they got where one live
so if iGo is good in north America don't 100% mean that it's the thing to get where you live
a good pointer is if gamin or tomtom are huge on the market as stand alone gps's you know that they prob got good maps for your area
so look what stand alone gps use
and check the websites of the various gps software makers

HTC phones and free maps

Does anyone know if there are any plans by HTC to bring out free maps for use on the WM platform for use in their phones?
When I was in the UK and had a virtually free GPRS connection as part of my plan, I used Google maps quite a lot, switching between whatever connection was available without any real problems, however I'm on the other side of the world now.
I find that my phone an HTC Touch HD has developed a big black hole and seems to have reverted back to the dark ages, in that even though it has a massive storage card installed, I can't easily save maps to it and use the built in GPS on the move, even though I can view Google maps via the WiFi here. Crazy!
Maybe my next phone will be a Nokia as it seems they are taking smartphones to a new level with their free Ovi map offering!
Can I politely ask you to rephrase the question?
Do you want a download-maps-as-you-go service like Bing / Google or a maps-saved-on-the-storage-card application like iGo? If it's either of those, what's wrong with either of those?
Go? Please enlighten me! Nothing seem to come up on a search of Google from here. Is it free? Is it easy to get working with the built in GPS - I've downloaded some maps of Vietnam that displayed fine (eventually) but the gps refused to play ball..
Google maps is wonderful IF you have a connection. Here in Vietnam, in the city with all the free WiFi around it's fine but as soon as I'm moving around, I'd rather not be paying for that data connection. And Google maps soon lets you know it hasn't got one!
So yes, stored on the card is the easiest and to me the best option. I'm not bothered about GPS navigation software, I just need a stored local map ( a storable google type map would be great) and the gps will tell me where I am on it! I can usually work it out under my own steam where I want to go to from there.
Thanks

[Q] GPS in another country.

For the transformer can I use the GPS in Taiwan when I purchased a USA model. It is able to go around the world correct? is there a way I can load the maps? since i will not have internet access?
Google maps should work. If you do route planning while you have wifi access it will store the necessary tiles to get to where you want to go. If you need it to work all the time without internet access you will have to use navigation software with maps that are loaded on to the machine. Copilot and Sygic Aura comes to mind, as well as a few others. Alternatively I believe there are free programs to pre-cache google's maps, although i can't comment on those as i use copilot so i haven't had to look in to it myself.
It doesn't matter what region the machine is from gps isn't limited in that regard.
If you don't need navigation, look at Locus. (A free version is available.) You can set it up to download map tiles for a predefined area automatically, at your choice of zoom levels, and it does so from OpenStreetMaps, who have coverage second only to Google, if you ask me. Then you can have some seriously detailed offline maps.
There's also an app based on TomTom maps (which I swear by) supposedly coming out soon, but it isn't available yet. Keep an eye on www.66.com for updates, and hopefully it'll be out in time for your trip -- it isn't for mine.

[Q] TF as giant screen Nav

I tried using the Google navigation app in the car and found that it could not load the route/directions. The map showed my current location fine so the GPS works. Is the failure to load route the result of this being a wifi device and the map data is not stored locally?
I'll try loading a search before leaving wifi connection next time and see what happens.

The maps are not stored locally when you don't have a route planned. If you plan a route while in wifi range or while teathered to a phone then it will work fine as it downloads the map data for the entire journey at the start and keeps it in memory.
Perhaps one of the standalone GPS navigation package would be a better fit. Those have map databases. Unfortunately some are kind of pricy.
You can use offline navigation software, like Copilot or Sygic Aura, they will work even without internet access.
I'm going to second the suggestion for CoPilot..it's only 4.99 and it's a good piece of software....the ONLY thing that I don't like is that it's a bit blurry at tablet size...they need to optimize it for the TF...

I'm reading the reviews. Does the 4.99 come with the North America map or do I need to pay for that separately?
4.99 covers the USA completely. For "North America + Canada" it's 19.00
How updated are the maps?
Will we have to buy new map updates every year?

AFAIK....no paid updates...and I'm not sure how often they are updated.

GPS Map Aquisition

I have used my Galaxy S3 in areas with no data connection and I got "Lost data connection" and navigation would not work till I got a good signal again.
I just picked up a Galaxy Note 10.1 wiFi. It has a GPS so I tried the navigation over a 78 mile journey. The GPS worked exactly the same as the G3 one and never skipped a beat!
Now, since there is no cell service with my Note 10.1, can anyone who KNOWS, explain how it's acquiring the map data?
I am soooo blown away, and at the same time, very curious as to how this is being done.
Thanks Guys, hoping to see the light!!!
Aloha!
You can save Google map data for offline use. Under settings in Google Maps there's an option to make available offline. I've been downloading and using free USGS topo maps of National Forests for years, starting with my original GPS unit. If you hike or bike in these areas, these maps are life savers. Here's a link that gets you to a USGS page with links to a clickable map of the US that's used to pick the topo maps you want (the downloadable maps are free, paper maps are available for a reasonable price). http://nationalmap.gov/ustopo/ Right now, you can still sign up for a free beta of TerraGo's Mobile for Android app that can import USGS pdf topo maps. http://www.terragotech.com/download-software
