So im trying to root my buddy g1 from scratch, got NBH file and brung the stock 1.6 down to RC29, it went good than i went and download the Root.apk for faster rooting, everything went fine untill i go and upgrade the radio, did the alt L and than atl S and now the damn phone is stuck on G1 bootscreen! So im like alright ill just do a wipe, restatred the phone with the Power+Home wouldnt get into recov menu so i decided to do the RC29 wipe over, i reformat my sd card to FAT32 and than put the Dreaimg.nbh on it and do the Power+Camera but still it just stuck on G1 bootscreen, help?? THIS IS NOT AN EXCUSE TO BREAK FORUM RULES.
This thread has now been reported, and hopefully, it will be closed before someone goes against their better judgment and helps you.
If you want an answer, have patience and check back in the Q&A. Or, post in the relevant ROM thread. Or, search. Or, don't perform procedures on your buddy's phone if you don't know what you're doing. But DO NOT post in here when you KNOW it's a violation of the rules.

these guys are crawling out all over the place today....feel bad to be a mod today..lol...
you need to slow down friend and reread everything you need to and start from step 1.

If I were a mod, I would've taken the day off. It sounds bricked to me if you can't even get into fastboot. You should've done the one click root.

Ok anyone. Mods are getting really angry with all these post. Ur probaly gonna get banned for posting in this section. Anyway u probaly didn't follow directions. You flashed the spl before u did the radio and got bricked I guess. If u can't get into the bootloader by pressing camera + power or recovery home + power. You are brick. See you in 3 days after ur banned. You should have search first

How do you go back to a completely clean phone?

Hey,
How do you remove JF, Rooted RC8 etc.. and just go back to how the phone was before I rooted on RC8?
Thanks

Stop after the 1st step
once you flash with DREAMIMG.nbh you will be at RC29 and the automatic updates will bring you back up to date eventually.
Also this info is already here in these forums, please try to search in the future

Check your link, you should at least give him the right info lol. The file is called DREAIMG.nbh, and if you are on RC8, you would not be able to use that file because it is for the US version G1 firmware. Therefore his european APN's would not be loaded onto the phone.
Go to this link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485364
Better yet, download this, and copy it to your SD card: http://koushikdutta.blurryfox.com/G1/DREAMIMG-RC7.zip
Unzip DREAMIMG-RC7.zip, and copy the DREAIMG.nbh to your SD card. Unplug your phone from the usb.
Power off your phone.
After it has powered down, hold the camera and power button at the same time to enter the bootloader. The phone will search for DREAIMG.nbh, and once it has been found, press the power button to update. After it has finished updating it will tell you to press the action button, so press the trackball. Once it has returned to the bootloader, press power, the green call button, and menu at the same time to restart.
It may take a few minutes to update so don't turn off the phone will updating.

Crazy... i could swear i gave this link

I must be loosing my mind or something.
sorry
pwned!!!!!!!!
why dont ppl just simply link something without crapping on about search etc..
if it was that easy to find then why ask?
Sadly this doesn't seem to work with german G1s as of now.
Or, is there a DREAIMG.nbh for german devices? I couldn't find anything.

the OP should have searched because I'm sure that not only the original "back to stock" thread there are probably a few like this one where somebody asked and some helpful user reposted the instructions, which is good... as there is more than 1 way to skin a cat.
But on a forum as busy as this, a question as popular as this can just clogg up the the works with a dozen threads rehashing of the same info.
the second poster was right to scold him for not searching first and posting second then he even gave a link to be nice(right or wrong it's the thought that counts, right?) to soften the blow of the "you shoulda searched buddy"
so now I'll stop clogging sh1t up with my rant
In parenting this is called reinforcing negative behavior, everybody should try to search out the info they want before posting a "HELP ME!" thread, the OP didn't do that but got his info anyway, thus reinforcing the behavior of not searching before you post.

How to get a completely clean phone
First before you can get your phone completely clean, you need to learn where to post on xda

If I want to revert back to "official" G1 firmware, what about the HardSPL?

I plan on rooting my phone in the next couple of days, but I was wondering if the HardSPL that you install during the "How To Root your G1" tutorial will cause any issues if I want to go back to the "official" g1 firmware from Tmobile. From reading about SPL, the stock SPL is from HTC but the HardSPL thats on the tutorial is modified. Would I replace the modified SPL if I want to go back to the official firmware?
If you look real hard, you can find a sticky about this!
But I'll be nice and sweet tonight, so here it is!

Did you post in the wrong thread? That link is about rc33 OTA update. My question is about getting back to official firmware after rooting the phone and whether the HardSPL can stay or revert back to the original.

to go back to original everything just use the original spl in an update.zip and then use the DREAIMG.nbh from when you rooted your phone and you will have stock stuff like it just came out of the box

So if I want to go back I would first install the rc29 then the original SPL, then upgrade to rc33?
Whats the purpose of using the HardSPL vs the original SPL?
no, do the original SPL THEN the .nbh you need to have root to flash an update.zip that is not signed with the proper keys, as for the benefits of hard SPL over the original go here and read

Thanks. Some of the FAQs are not very clear. I'm not sure what you mean by EVERYTHING I've said on the board...
btw, are you hoping I brick my phone? So far I've read 4 different tutorials on how to root your phone. Each one has something different than the other. I'm just trying to get the facts straight before rooting my phone.
look for the thread "app that roots your phone" tell him in a PM that you want to beta test it, when i ran it or him on the last version he needed to fix the telnet script and he is pretty sure he got that working. i would give the link but since it is not my app it is not my place to give out the link.
i do not hope you brick your phone, but i see it as an inevitable thing, i know what i'm doing, i'm no guru but certainly not a n00b and i have managed to "brick" my phone just bout every day because i am always trying new things. the main thing to remember is that as long as when you turn your phone in you get the SPL or recovery then you do not have a true brick. i wish you the best in all your hacking but be forewarned that everything you try has the potential to render the phone unusable for a few hours till you figure out how to fix it. ALWAYS keep the DREAIMG.nbh on your sdcard and an update.zip that contains one of the many JF builds and you will never be too far from fixing your phone.

I understand. Hopefully I wont brick the phone but the nice thing about GSM phones is that I can jut pop my SIM card into my old phone if any issues come up with the G1. I just see people being mean to noobs when at some point in time they were noobs also.
The main reason I want to root the phone is to move the cache to my SD card. The onboard memory on the G1 is a joke. I knew the limitations when I bought the phone in October, but I thought for sure they would have come out with a update that lets you run apps from your SD card. Being a early adopter is fun
if you have less than a class 6 sdcard then moving the cache will have loads of lag, took 3 seconds to delete an email on my class 4. but if you just wanna move apps then you'll be fine

Interesting. I may have to buy a microSDHC card since the microSD card that came with the phone has no rating on it. After reading about SDHC, it seems only SDHC has the 2,4,6 rating.
use the RC29 NBH, it flashes everything including bootloader, then use the official signed RC33 update (40mb) and you will be back to stock rc33

Fastboot Help (Rid me of my headach)

Ok, lets start from the beginning. I have a gt that had non-rooted rc33, i downgraded to rc29, rooted it, upgraded to rc30, and now to jf's rc33 1.41, obviously still rooted. Once I got to rc33 1.41 i finished re-installing all the programs i had lost along the way (going to rc29). Then I changed my boot images (splash1 and 2) using fastboot. Everything was fine untill i went to change my boot images again and powered on using camera+power and the grey screen pops up first since i left it on my sd card (dont remember what the grey screen is i just remember not to interupt it but im sure if youve rooted youll remember what im talking about), well instead of clicking the trackball i accidently hit the power button, wiping my phone once again. I went back to rc29 and rooted it (wasnt sure if i had to so i just did it (i had the time)) then back to the rc33 1.41 by jf. got all my programs back the way it was before. i noticed when it booted into rc29 the first time and everytime after that my splash1 screen was back to stock but my splash2 screen was the one i had put there. so i powered off after i got all my programs installed and went to change my first splash screen, and now once i exit out of the grey screen (yeah i know, still on the sd card) it goes to the RGB screen (the normal screen), not the skateboarding androids, and definately not fast boot.
My question: Without going back through the ENTIRE process all over again, how do i get my fastboot back? I may of missed it on the forums, but I promise, it wasnt for a lack of searching, LOTS of searching (and not just this forum). Plenty of forums tell me how to use fastboot, just now what to do to get it back...
Thanks in advance for your help..
(oh and if it makes a difference I recently installed a theme more details can be provided if needed)
Since i take it that you are already rooted.. then i think it should be easy.. just download the bootloader devs edition again and place it in your sd card and then go safety mode and update it again.. but i think the reason why its going to the gray screen when you press camera + power is becuase you may still have the dreaimg.nbh file in there.. i would delete that first.. then put the modified bootloader and then update it and see if that works... Those are my thoughts hope it help.. good luck

yes i know that its the dreaimg.nbh i just forgot what the name was, and yes i should definately delete it since its what got me in this situation to begin with lol
now i found the bootloader i need (i got bored and decided to root my girlfriends g1 while waiting for an answer and found out that i forgot to use the bootloader like i had before) and have it on the sdcard, named as update.zip, waiting to be installed, but before i do it, am i going to lose all of my programs again? i have 127 programs, many of them (like locale and such have settings edited) that i do not feel is worth having to go through a 3rd time
so not my only question is, when i hit alt+s am i going to wipe my phone again?
Oh and thank you for such a quick responce n8izzle, and another thing, why safemode?

No it won't wipe your programs if u install the boot loader. And by safe mode he meant recovery mode (i am sure). If u want to be on the safe side go to recovery mode first and then do a NAND backup by pressing Alt+B which will back up all your partitions if something should go wrong again. Then update bootloader.
So Alt+B first then Alt+S and then u should have fastboot again and also backup images of ur phone on ur SD card
hey sorry had to restart my computer i just got ubuntu .. but yea thats what i mean not safe mode but the other lol... but hope that you got it working if not you can pm me and i will walk you through it...
Yeah I didn't put 2 and 2 together than bootloaders wher part of the rc updates lol, it makes perfect sense to me now, how's ubuntu?
Oh and can anyone elaborate on exactly what's backed up with the backup tool in the recovery menu and how to restore it
(New to linux incase anyone was wondering, I've always wanted to get into it but every class I've taken for my certs for web development has been for windows os, so hang in there I'm a quick learner lol)
ubuntu is pretty cool i like it.. im not too familiar with it but i initially got it so i can partition my sd card... so i'm learning on this as well... if you are talking about backing up your phone with nandroid it works great... you can view the directions and all below... if you want i can help you step by step if you run into problems.. just pm me if you do...

The G1 Night Light (READ FIRST IF YOU BRICKED YOUR PHONE)

Many people complain that they have "bricked" their phones when they really haven't. This thread will hopefully help reduce the questions on all of our useful threads.
How to tell if your phone is bricked:
1.) When you try to turn it on, nothing happens?
2.) Camera+Power does nothing.
3.) Home+Power does nothing.
4.) You flashed the SPL BEFORE the radio
If you answered yes to any of the above 4, you are bricked. You probably need a new board in the phone. Read more here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=516440 It has been confirmed that you WILL brick your phone if you attempt to downgrade your radio after flashing the new SPL. Not sure why you would want to anyways...
How to tell if you just need to re-flash:
1.) Your phone is stuck on the g1 logo
2.) Your phone is stuck in a boot loop
3.) Home+Power boots into recovery
If you answered yes to the above then you are NOT bricked. You have the G1 Night Light. This is (usually) a very easy fix.
The usual scenario is: You just upgraded your radio and/or the SPL on your phone and now you are trying to turn it on with no luck.
How to fix: After you upgrade your radio and/or SPL, you need to wipe a rom on the phone. For a plain almost stock feeling rom, checkout http://jf.andblogs.net/2009/05/24/jfv151-images-are-out/ if you are looking for hero, checkout the tutorial at g1upgrade.com.
I have also noticed when you flash hero, it will stay on the g1 logo for 5 or 6 minutes and then it'll finally start loading. Make sure your not being impatient and give it several minutes if you have just flashed a rom.
Last step:
If you have installed a new radio, then spl, then a new rom and you STILL get the g1 screen. Try it all over again. You probably didn't do something right. You don't need to ask questions in 30 different threads, your issue is not unique. You just need to search for some answers.
*Saved for future posts*
Edit:
Thanks! Updated.
I flashed the SPL before the radio whenever Haykuro released the Hero ROM and I didn't brick my device. Guess that I just got lucky. Thank goodness I know better now. haha
it's possible you flashed the radio prior to the SPL, only a loooong ways back.
Another thing to try if you are having issues is:
su
rm -r /system/sd/*
I was stuck in a boot loop and a quick ext3 wipe did the trick. The command should be able to be ran from console or terminal. You may need to mount /system with:
mount -t -rw,remount -o yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
You would need to type that in between the commands above . I ran across this in another post but i think this is a good spot for it too .
Duplicate post...
thanx
At least I know now how to tell if I bricked my phone or just flashed it badly thanks for this.

many people who flashed the new SPL before the radio are stuck at the G1 splash logo, but cannot get to recovery or spl bootloader / fastboot mode regardless of what they do, so this bit might be misleading...
they aren't technically "bricked" b/c it's loading the radio rom, but it never hands off to the SPL, so there is currently no way of reloading either of those to make the device do anything useful -- essentially a brick

if i flashed a gsm radio on a cdma? jus curious cuz i did that
Get your operators ship rom, then flash it via SD card. Reflash HardSPL and then flash a CDMA rom.
Oh dear. I could be wrong, but I seem to remember when someone has done that before, the phone was bricked (i.e. flashing the wrong radio, not just the wrong ROM). I do hope I'm wrong.

Well, unless someone comes forward and says otherwise, I'm sorry to say yes, I think you're done. In the past one or two people have posted up a similar scenario and I don't recall them posting to say they fixed it.
It might cost you less than replacing your phone if you pay for your phone to be repaired.
Well possibly not. IF you can still get into bootloader (hold the volume down button when powering on or if device is already on hold down volume down and softreset) first LOOK AT THIS TASK 29 POST HERE BUT DONT DO ANYTHING YET!:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=649191
Make sure to download the file provided, extract it to wherever.
Now goto this post here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=90342
and download the correct radio for your provider.
Replace the NBH file from the TASK 29 threads package you extracted with the one from your provider.
Run the task29 as instructed.
Once its done it wont boot into a rom you need to go back into bootloader like I told you how before (Volume down and reset) now find your providers stock rom from here:
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/showthread.php?t=91940
and flash that rom to your phone. Hopefully this will resolve your issue, best of luck to ya mate.
To anyone ready to post disagreeing: Please dont post up saying about task29 and saying it wont work and stuff, I have fixed two worldphone this way because the owners did exactly what he did, in the way I described here.
thanx aestivalisakito im willing to try what your taking about. have a couple of questions tho. its not that im making it go into bootloader. when i hit power it goes str8 to it. could that be a problem for this fix?
my screen sticks at the multi colored screen with writting in the background saying" code error please try again".and i noticed that, one time while powering on b4 getting stuck. it, for a split sec. try to go to the grey screen to flash and says "loading No image found" then back to multi colored screen. does this help any?
also can i use task29 thru sd card?

Ahh it appears you weren't that clear. If you get into the multi-coloured screen, you are at bootloader. Download a rom from http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Rhodium/Shipped_Roms to get your original shipping rom. Once you have done this, put the nbh on the sdcard named as rhodimg.nbh. Reboot back into bootloader mode. This should then get you able to flash the device with all the proper stuff.
Make sure to get the one for YOUR original provider.
thanx i got it fixed. someone helped me on another forum with the same solution and it worked thanx for ur reply
