New HTC Android Device - General Topics

I didn't see any other thread for this so:
http://theunlockr.com/2009/10/16/what-new-htc-android-phone-is-this/
Wonder what it could be?

It's the HTC Zoom 2 (HTC Dragon). Spec's say maybe released Dec. 2009:
http://www.pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=2067&c=htc_zoom_2_htc_dragon

Looks like the Android version of the HD2 many people have been wishing for. Nice to have choices right?

Hm, I really hope it's not. Don't really like the looks of it.
Though IF it is the HTC dragon, it would be easier for me to choose the HD2 (out sooner + sexier ). It is a shame though, as I would have enjoyed trying out Android. Ah well... maybe next time.

Is it me or do the pictures look rather stretched. The screen looks way too long and narrow. It's not proportined right. The looks aren't that great either.

If this is the Android-version of the HD2, then they really screwed up the design, It looks like **** compared to the Touch HD2.
Plus its much bigger with that added chin for the trackball.
They should add the trackball between the buttons and skip that bottom chin.

What you all complaining about? I think it looks great.

It's not ugly. It just doesn't look as nice as the HD2 in my opinion.

Ok Someone else call Shananigans with me.......... This is more than a likely photoshopped Samsung Moment. Look at them both.

looks like the HTC Eris with a few slight changes:

Yeah. But the eris is supposedly the Verizon Hero. So why they are pushing the moto Droid more than that IDK. Probably cause the screen aint no 4.3 inches.
Would be cool if the Eris was the Dragon though. But IDK.
http://phonedog.com/cell-phone-rese...ee-k-i-s-s-say-android-phones-are-coming.aspx
Screen doesn't look big enough neither does the device. The phone the other guy is hodlding is the Droid.
So mebe they took the Eris/Desire and photoshoped that picture so the screen was stretched and phone look bigger? Look at how stretched the Android bot is in one of those pictures where it's in landscape mode.

That phone looks like a shopped Droid Eris which is basically a Verizon Hero. Moto Droid all the way though.

Why soooo much of hoax circulating around. Just like with Leo b4 it ws announced?
It wont be called Dragon or Passion, but Bravo and its expected to be released late Q1, early Q2 of 2010 wearing 3.7'' and not 4.3 screen and many others....

Nobody spoken about an Android-based HD2 and neither did I. I just said that the device which the topic/thread is about (and so are the photos which are circulating) will be released as i have priorly stated on end of March (Q1) start of April (Q2) of 2010, as i have seen all the devices portfolio live, on my hands, a week ago.

Any idea what CPU its running? I like the idea of an android handset, but not if its using the same old MSM as my current TD2.

Guys, the forthcoming on April 2010, Android handset which will be finally called as HTC Bravo has nothing to do with the picture which was circulation over the net for quite a while. The device looks great from any point of view and as member nizzon correctly stated before, i can confirm to all of you, that the rounded red-coloured trackball will be between the buttons at the bottom of the device. The device is slim with perfect design and with really nice specs.
Wrongly many stated that Bravo is the Android side of Leo (HD2) as the only same feature which is maintained from Leo is the Snapdragon QSD 8250 1GHz CPU and many others have been added in advanced as the HD 720p Video caprure.
Will post you shortly exclusively 1-2 pictures to have a look, along with the offcial specs known so far

That sounds awesome dude!

Im sorry i haven't posted it so far but will do it as my work was pilled up and to be honest nobody showed interest so far, thats why i skipped it as well. To be honest what i will provide, are scanned brochured images, as these are the only ones found out there, but will open a new thread, specifically for HTC Bravo and us usual...exclusively here on xda.devs

Typing this up really quickly as im waiting for lunch, will expand later.
I got lots of pics and vids already, which i may post later if there is any interest.
Android stuff seems to be decidedly absent so far.
@Microsoft: You all probably already heard about WM 6.5, saw some demos live, looks like a decent UI improvement, but its still no iPhone. Also saw some new devices here, including Acer stuff.
@nVidia: I did get a chance to play with a Tegra device, which was really snappy and smooth, but also the size of a small house. Very promising. They did have two normal Tegra devices on display, with names I had seldom heard before, but behind glass.
@HTC: Played with the Touch Diamond 2 a bit. I dont like the new form factor much. It wastes space at the bottom, and introduces a zoom slider that I couldnt get to work in either IE or Opera. They did do some more HTC integration, new startmenu, better contacts list etc. The Touch Max is just an HD with WiMAX.
@Qualcomm: They demod snapdragon, but it didnt seem as impressive as Tegra. Also, I was not allowed to touch the device. The now infamous Toshiba was also there, but again, no touching. BTW Nokia just made a deal with these guys, so abandon ship!
@LG: I was surprised to learn they are switching to WM as primary OS. They had some nice Omnia-like devices though, and the wristwatchphone was also fun.
@Samsung: Biggest surprise here, it seems the OmniaHD is running Symbian! No idea yet if there will also be a WM version.
---
The open eco system keynote with Microsoft, Nokia and AT&T CEOS was interesting. AT&T guys was the best, Ballmer a close second with his energetic ways and content, while the Nokia guy almost killed everybody due to excess boredom. The keynote itself was mostly a call for more working together and being generally more open with things, which they all agreed was necessary.
---
BTW, I dont know who CBOSS are or what they do, but they do employ an army of hot models!
More later, lunch is here, and I want to find myself a Palm Pre to play with!
ok, just tell me which device to get and that's it. so many out there i can't decide what i want.
JUST TELL ME! AHHH!
Omnia HD!!
HTC's hardware seems to be stuck in 2007 compared to Samsung and LG, heck even Sony Ericsson.
Kinda worrying how ppl are moving towards Symbian, but can't blame them windows mobile really is starting to show its age and no amount of skinning will disguise the fact that it needs a major revamp.
Okay, I was seriously thinking of abandoning the HTC ship for the nokia N97, so I could keep my tilt screen, but now? So if it is not too much trouble, my contract is up in April, could you please corner the AT$T guys and ask them when my new Touch Pro II ( Fuze II ? ) will be available on AT$T? Thanks
Some more stuff... First, somebody at HTC really needs to be fired for putting XT9 on the TP enabled when keyboard is extended. Annoying like hell, finally its off
Found some very nice Android devices that should be out by Q2. The company didnt decide on the brand name yet.
Unfortunately you cant play with the Palm Pre unless you are press.
@Gigabyte (GSmart): some very nice upcoming WM devices. Some were running 6.5 and I played with that. I think somebody made a mistake there!
@iMate: They drowned some of their WM phones. Waterproof!
can you attempt to get the new WM6.5 build ?

At Toshiba's booth, you can freely play with the TG01. Please see http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=3339526 for more info & a lot of pics & videos (more to come!!!)
Hey Werner!
You're here? Haven't gotten round to Toshiba's booth yet, but if you're interested, PM me your phone number (plus international code bla bla) and we can meet up, schedules allowing... There will be beer!
No ROM dumps people It's a small booth, can't make it happen.
About those Android phones we saw (and I must stress here, I haven't even seen half of all the exhibits yet because of appointments and speeches etc), first, they looked very nice. One of the sexiest phone designs I've seen in a while, but then it was made by a 'design company'. They originally focused on Linux but switched to Android when it was released. According to them, they are using the default Android 'shell' - which is a shame, because their Linux phone had one of the awesomest shells I've seen in a while. I don't think they really understood me correctly, but it seemed they were saying that for these phones you can get apps to run as root without jailbreaking by getting it certified by them (or something.. wasn't really clear).
There were also some Androids coming out under the General Mobile label, but not necessarily those I mentioned above
And no, we're not palming those models (but perhaps we will? ) but we are sure to do some clubhopping here. It's Barcelona, after all! In fact I just got back from a club
EDIT: Also, at SPB's booth we were shown SPB Shell 3.0 (after being persistent), dont have any pics or vids of that. But it's pretty darn cool. I'm going to buy it when it's out, most likely, beats the crap out of TF3D.

just an FYI video: FIRST LOOK, hands on with new HTC MAGIC (w/ Android)

g2 launch
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/low/technology/7894516.stm
So what are the odds jf will be able to get us cupcake when it finally rolls out on the htc magic
As far as I know cupcake will never be released, not the way most people think at least. It's a development branch, a fork of the regular Android build, which will release new modules one at a time, as they get ready. I'd wager that the RC33/ADP1.1 Holiday releases already have "cupcake parts" in them. But seeing as the G2/Magic lacks a real keyboard, we can count on one thing at least; it will have the fabled cupcake on-screen keyboard.
wow, it looks just like the G1 but, strangly, not as good.
I need a physical keyboard...
I'll wait for the G3. Unless samsung manages to pull out an OmniaHD with a keyboard and android
this looks like a cheaper less expensive g1...i doubt there will be anywhere near the support
for this phone as there has been for the Dream.
No physical keyboard? Fail. I can't stand touch screen for typing I need a physical keyboard. The most common complaints I hear about the iPhone and the Blackberry Storm is the lack of a physical keyboard. I also don't see anything about a onboard GPU either that'd give it graphics that can compete with the iPhone. Like what was said it's probably just a G1 that's cheaper to make which is utterly disappointing. It's less like a G2 and more like a G1.5.
bummer, i was hoping for a full screen face. looks like a keyboardless, cheaper G1 :/
Appears to have video tho.. may be useful for the g1?
The Magic's photo gallery app has built-in video playback, unlike on the G1. You can record videos with the phone, as well, at two quality settings - "low" and "high." The video player plays movies from a microSD card in full-screen mode.

HTC Magic
I thought this was interesting, HTC is releasing its second Android phone, and no its not the G2.
I just happened to browse there website today and noticed the new phone, what strikes me as odd is the fact that the phone has no physical keyboard and they say its all on-screen... Which I assume means they have a cupcake build running stable enough for a release with Vodaphone.
http://www.engadget.com/2009/02/17/htc-magic-is-official-bringing-android-to-vodafone-sans-keyboar/

Looks like it would have to run a stable release branched off from the cupcake development branch since, per its specs, it would at least need:
- software keyboard
- video recording capability
- A2DP
if you read the engadget post you'll see that the keyboard is not yet stable

One thing the htc magic does have are all the cupcake compatible google and closed source apps.
In the phonedog video, somebody actually demoed the new enhancements to the gmail app such as tagging for batch processing.
I'm guessing google is waiting for cupcake to stabilize before making those apps available.
Good to see they're sticking with some sort of lip at the bottom, funny if all Android phones happened to have bent bottoms to them
Or, they are releasing their apps to phone manufacturers rather than developers first. Google needs to get their priorities in order, I think.
also note that the Vodaphone site says release in Spring, which means probably end of spring/summer. Really, anything that they demoed could have easily been smoke and mirrors (very common in software/gadgets ), but, most likely they are working off of trunk that had cupcake merged into it back in December.
In other words, this means nothing about a stable cupcake build
could the firmware for this be ported to the G1, seing as its, well, basically the same?
or would there be no physical keyboard support, etc?
Hmm I suppose your right, with the spring/summer release date I wonder if they *think* they will have cupcake stable by then. This is kind of a relief for me, I just got my G1 back in early December - I'd be kinda upset to see a G2 release so fast.
The hardware is mildly better if that, so I suppose its nothing to get too excited about, I guess its a white G1 without the keyboard... Personally the keyboard was one of the bigger selling points to me buying the G1 over the iPhone. Besides my love for Google products.

BTW, this is NOT the G2, as t-mobile owns that name. The G2 will probably be a different HTC phone. That said, I agree, to me, losing my physical QWERTY keyboard is a major downgrade
I like having the physical keyboard too, and I think the G1 is a better looking phone. I'm really happy to know that I won't be wishing I had the Magic instead of the Dream!

HTC Magic Android phone, hands-on
Posted on 17 February 2009 by Vincent Nguyen
We know we said that HTC weren’t allowing live shots or video of the HTC Magic, but we couldn’t leave it at that. Non-final hardware or not, we know you guys are as excited by the Magic as we are, and still want to see it. Hands-on, the HTC Magic is everything the G1 was not: thin and lightweight, with none of the bulk G1 owners have complained about.
Click to collapse
It also has more RAM - 192MB - so it should run quicker and be able to multitask more comfortably than the G1. The on-screen keyboard - which is only available in portrait orientation, not landscape - has letters which pop-up when you press them, as on the iPhone, which makes text entry much easier.
Click to collapse
In the non-final hardware we’ve played with, the key change are the hardware buttons on the HTC Magic’s “chin” section. The prototype has thin, sliver-style keys running under the capacitive touchscreen, together with a single button (”Menu”) to the left of the trackball. The final hardware will have four square keys under the screen, with functions switched around to leave call send/end on keys either side of the trackball.
According to Vodafone Spain, the HTC Magic will be priced between 99 Euro and 199 Euro when it launches. Still no word on pricing outside of Spain, nor when the HTC Magic will be available in the US.
We’ve got a full 1-on-1 hands-on session with the Vodafone HTC Magic tomorrow, so expect plenty more photos and footage after that!

Best Handset at the moment?

Please recommend me a new handset as I'm getting the bug for a new one again and I'm a bit out of touch.
I've had just about every handset HTC has ever made since the very first XDA I.
I'm not put off by size (I love and still use my Athena)
Must be fast and good at playing video/divx etc
Prefer some kind of flash.
I kinda like the Pro2 but worried its just a pretty face and no big performance increase?
Also concidering a Hero but worried about Android. Can I transfer all contacts, calender etc over ok?
Suggestions on a postcard please
The HD2 LEO is the latest and greatest with Snapdragon! See it's section for details:http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=532
But if u want a keyboard, then the TP2.
Touch Pro 2 is the best hardware keyboard device!
We always want more!!
Snapdragon in a few years will be nothing and we still want more speed, more performance......
I strongly recommend you to buy Touch Pro 2. It is more than just a pretty face. It has a tilting screen. It allows for optimum viewing angle when typing, it allows you to easily watch a movie without holding your device, and it's great if you're using GPS navigation in the car.
Thanks guys, any comments on the Hero?
Are they easy to mod and transfer contacts etc from WM?

Hey orb, maybe there will be no keyboard and just visual & voice interface!
Also, there will be Kryptonite Batteries that go a year w/o a recharge!
don't worry about Android. I am a long time WM user, and had a G1 phone for almost a year now. Android is a very very nice system with a lot of software in the Marketplace.
That being said, I just got myself the new Acer neoTouch.
1 GHz Snapdragon, good amout of RAM, nice 3,8" WVGA screen, WM 6.5, configurable accelerometer, nice design, good build quality.
I would say, if you don't need a keyboard and don't want to wait for the HD2, this is the best device today. it is very speedy, has good usability and seems reliable so far.

Yeah mate, you are right

No new [decent] WinMo phones from HTC this year?

Saw the new range of phones from HTC this year and it seems as the HD Mini is the best they have to offer on a WinMo device?
I've still been in two minds about the HD2 purely because of its 'huge' size. What the ideal would be for me is a HTC Desire/Nexus One size phone running WinMo (even tempted to get one of thoses!)
There were rumours of the HD3; there is normally a new flagship HTC WinMo device out every year isn't there? If so, I'm guessing Q3/Q4?
Agree, nothing really exciting this year at least for me.
I am a hardware keyboard WM devices lover and this year nothing really cool is commming...

I just did a general search on the net. That post needs some serious formatting, I can't make any sense of it with linked images instead of embedded ones for example. But it's essentially the same info that is available on the web.
The only H/W keyboard that I've had is the HTC Hermes, excellent device and I still have it lying around somewhere!
Yes, it seems HTC is more focused on Android phones; never used before so can't comment. Mind you, I don't think too much of WM7 either!
I still have the Diamond (almost 3 years now), think its time for a change but just can't decide what.

Thanks for posting. Seems to be all over the place now, including PocketNow, Engadget etc etc.
I really hope the phone in question is running an S3 SoC like our Sensation because it looks DOG slow. I know poeple will say it's only a test build, but even so, if that's what the S4 (Krait) has to offer I'm deeply disappointed. And qHD resolution? Really? Eeeek. Why no 720p? Chip not up to it?
Apart from bluetooth 4.0, more RAM and a better camera sensor I don't see too much of an improvement in terms of hardware. Still got a big bezel. Not sure HTC are doing the right thing here - the hardware is enough of an improvement to make people who have just got a Sensation on a two year contract feel a bit frustrated, but not significant enough to make those people who are a year into a contract trade up. Hope this isn't their flagship for the MWC in Feb ; ) If this IS an S3 chip then I guess Krait must have been delayed and this is just fodder to buy HTC time. It'll be interesting to see full details at the MWC : )
Is it me or does showing off the phone's IMEI number etc seem a bit foolhardy of whoever filmed that video? Surely HTC will be able to work out who had that prototype recently and kick their butt?? Unless HTC leaked it themselves I suppose...but why would you show such laggy software?

looks like they pulled the video guess the "leaked" info was gaining too much attention... here are screen shots http://www.androidcentral.com/htc-ville-caught-video?utm_source=ac&utm_medium=twitter

Well, including the "working" sounds in the backgrounds. It looks like this is just recorded somewhere in a HTC office. And without him acting nervously or something might this be done on purpose? And indeed the software seems to be unfinished.
Edit: Nevermind, I just saw the software info screen in the video. If really this will be Sense 4.0 (which I doubt), I won't buy HTCs for a couple of months/years.
menu animations look laggy guessing they will improve
overall HTC ville looks kinda sensation-ish and yeah spec wise it isnt that much of an upgrade
sense 4.0 looks laggy as hell but thats how the first leaked version of ICS sense 3.5 used to be as well so i think we got nothing to worry about
cept AOSP looks hotter lol
It runs at Android 4.0.1 as you can see. Remember our Sense 3.5 builds with ICS 4.0.1? Very laggy.. like this one.
I guess we should wait for the final version and then judge.
Btw, I find it a pretty sexy device.. Thin, nice specs (although it could be better ofcourse..) and Sense
I only hope that HTC will optimize their software for the SoC's so it'll run utterly smooth.
the font on the clock widget is ugly as ****!! the corrent clock is better.
Sent from my HTC Sensation XE with Beats Audio using xda premium
Looks good, specs are not bad but why the hell doesnt it have an 720p display instead of qhd like the htc rezound I hope this is wrong lol

Agreed : ) Looks like some of the imitation 'sense clock' widget skins in the Market ; )
Some sites are stating that the Ville has the Krait chip in it. If that's true it's supposed to be up to 60% faster....in which case either the firmware on that device in the video is truly awful or Krait might be a let down. Really hope it has the same chip as the sensation.
Kinda weird about the screen resolution. Does that mean the Rezound went too far for the current performance of Qualcomm's SoC so HTC had to back it down a bit?
By the way, the reason I care about the lag, even in an early test build, is that I was one of those people who got bitten in the race to offer VGA screens a few years ago. At the time the hardware in my Touch Pro just wasn't good enough to push that many pixels around (vs QVGA) so I was stuck with a fairly sluggish device for a looooong time (although to his credit NRGz worked miracles with his ROMs for it : ). I can't help thinking manufacturers are in the process of doing the same to us again at the moment with the transition from WVGA to qHD and HD screens. Compared to my HD2 my Sensation is clearly faster most of the time, but in certain cirsumstances the gap feels pretty slender.
I'd love it if performance over MHL to a tv was better - it really will be great when we can truly use our smartphones as mini pcs connected to a tv/monitor at 720p+, with a bluetooth media keyboard controlling things and a Micro SDXC card with enourmous amounts of storage.
