[e] still props for compiling the list, i would correct the title (FAQ?) and make sure it gets sticky... i was really wondering why noone else did something like that. you can't complain about newcomers asking question if you don't have such a list

I thought this would be interesting....you realize legitimate power users would click on this and now we just have wasted time. I hope this thread vanishes.

no more useless than the previous 6 threads on eclair or an eclair port within the past 3 days.

even if they open it they wont even read it nonetheless, its almost impossible for these nubs

my point in this entire thread is an attempt to get noobs to read important info. case in point... in 15 minutes this thread already has almost 600 views...

This thread made me happy lol. I praise your efforts, but the n00bs are out of control and there is no helping them anymore. Its just "gimme, gimme, gimme". They want everything handed to them.....
At least the XDA Wrecking Crew made an appearance before the thread got locked.

Clone your device

I've asked this question here before, and it seems it couldn't be done, and now it seems it can.
I wanted to be able to clone my device to an image file, and restore from the image file.
http://www.spritesoftware.com/store...-HMP-IconLink&utm_campaign=Clone-HMP-IconLink
It's just a shame sprite doesn't sell this as a single user licence.
This would be awesome for us addicted flashers. I know the one thing I hate doing is re-installing all my apps after, testing a rom and deciding it wasn't for me and want to go back to the way it was exactly before.

I dont understand why everyone fusses about flashing a rom anymore and setting up their apps now that UC is here. I literally have 51 (I just counted) apps I installed on my latest rom and it takes me no more than 10-20 minutes and I'm up and running. Does noone use UC? WTH?

UC requires one to be a bit more technical with xml programming. There is nothing wrong with a simple backup/restore. In fact, backup/restore requires no technical knowledge at all. OP is looking to go back to exactly what he had before (no new ROM; yes, he has to flash the old ROM back), so restore works very well for him.
I really like UC I only wish I had the time to invest to setup a xml file for my settings.
I really liked setting savor as it did all the cabs as well as my personal settings all by setting up the phone once and pushing 1 button to backup.
At risk of getting Flamed for asking an obvious question, can anyone direct me to a thread on configuring UC. I am keen to implement it on my latest UC compatible Dutty's rom but am unable to find the relevant info.
I have tried using the search tool, but unfortunately UC is too short and I'm not sure what the acronym stands for!
I also tried Skunkygwen's "G iving W ise E ducational N oob I nstructions" sticky, but I couldn't see anything there either.
Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Need Some Assistance Editing Roms

I hate to make a thread on this but would like to get started soon with learning how to root roms and add the kernel for multitouch and tethering. This is more for my personal use since I just want a stock rom with all the root benefits like jf use to and theses are the questions I have.
1. Will I have to take the update.zip file and extract everything and modify it then resign and I'm done?
2. I read some info on adding busybox and root which seem easy but when I run the chmod command and such everything will be through adb and the files will be on my pc so do I just make sure its all in the right directory and file path?
3. Where are the wallpapers stored in builds along with animations I will be looking into the framwork/framework-res.apk later but still curious
4. The modified kernel for tethering and multitouch is located where along with the market.db file?
5. What is meta.inf and how easy is it to make the cpu 528mhz standard also not sure what BFS and ASOP are haven't been keeping up.
P.S. I would really appreciate some help on this and I don't mind reading if this information is somewhere else so please provide a link and as always gotta show love to those who started this like JF, Hakuro, Cyanogen, Drizzy, and many more like daproy and kornub did a lot of helping.

You mean you hate starting threads in the correct place?
Thats a fine line here. Although it is a question, it is specifically a development question. Its not a which rom do i choose?
Although android is "open source" these people dont give a **** about people trying to learn how to develop. They will pull the google line or something.
yeah me 2
Trying 2 learn
Im a noob, so I can only answer two of thosew questions
1. Anytime you modify your update.zip you will have to resign before trying to flash it onyour device.
5b. BFS: Brain **** (simple) Scheduler, something to do with the priority of running proccesses or something http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brain_Fuck_Scheduler. AOSP stands for Android Open Software Project, which i believe is just googles standard rom really (but I may be wrong)
I recommend you try out this rom though, kind of like JF but for Donut http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=538456
Very Sorry, double post
Thanks! I'm actually using that rom and its what has me so interested in this cause I hate having to flash another update.zip to get the full root benefits when JF just made everything available in one nice package but looks like I will just have to go through trial an error unless I get some more feedback cause switching between cyan 4.1.11.1 and JF1..51 is killing me and taking up space on my card.
With my little to no knowledge, replacing the boot.img and some files in system/bin with the ones provided in theofficial expansion pack should give you all that you need. With no extra apps.
yeah me 2
Yeah me too

Unrevoked Test IRC FAQ

Hello, after sitting on the IRC for a few days and helping out a load of people with everything rooting I gathed a list of questions that are often asked. This thread will be added to often to keep up with any questions we recieve alot.
If you were linked here from the IRC or somewhere else, look for the question you asked, if you cant find it use CTRL + F and search for keywords in it. Thanks!
--------------------FAQ------------------
Q1) Where can I find the 2.2(or higher) build of unrevoked?
A1) Look in the TOPIC area of the window. DO NOT disribute these builds. They are in the "testing" phase but are generally stable. DEVS ARE NO RESPONSIBLE FOR YOUR STUPIDITY.
Q2)I have a HTC phone and Im running windows, I have set up the HBOOT drivers but it still is not working! What gives!
A2)You need to first install HTCSync, then you need to uninstall HTCSync. HBOOT is for when you phone is in recovery and the HTCSync drivers are for when you phone is on and in the Android OS. There is a universal method out there but I am not familier with it and it seems to confuse some people so I stick with this as its pretty simple just time consuming.
Q3)Do I need the HBOOT drivers.
A2) This depends on your OS.
Mac - No, It's all packaged together.
Linux - No, It's all packaged together.
Windows - YES. see this link: unrevoked.com/rootwiki/doku.php/public/windows_hboot_driver_install"]HBOOT install guide.
Q4)Where is setCPU?
A3) Market or there is a thread where XDA members can get it free. Search!!!
Q5) Where can I get Rom Manager.
A5) Market. Search for Rom Manager.
Q6)Do I need to be rooted to use ROOT Apps.
A6)Uh..DUH! Rooted apps are all found in the market! Search for them.
Q7)How do I s-off the desire.
A7)YOU PEOPLE NEED TO LEARN TO READ THE DANG TOPIC!
I will continue to add to this as I get more questions. Thanks!!

[FAQ] Viewsonic G-Tablet ROMs Frequently Asked Questions (READ THIS FIRST)

Here are some frequently asked questions about the G-Tablet. Where there are specific answers based on ROM, the ROM is listed prior to the answer.
How do I install Clockworkmod?
See Step 1 of THIS POST
OR watch THIS VIDEO
How do I boot into Clockworkmod?
With the device completely off (and not asleep/suspended), press the + volume button and the power button until the device turns on. If it is successfully booting into Clockworkmod, you will see a message at the top left of the screen saying booting recovery image.
How do I perform a wipe data/factory reset?
With Clockworkmod, select the third option in the menu "wipe data/factory reset" and press the Home key (second button down on the right side of the gTablet in landscape view). Then, confirm wipe by selecting "Yes - wipe data/factory reset" and press the Home key again.
How do I clear the cache?
With Clockworkmod, select the fourth option in the menu "wipe cache partition" and press the Home key (second button down on the right side of the gTablet in landscape view). Then, confirm wipe by selecting "Yes - Wipe Cache" and press the Home key again.
How do I install VEGAn-TAB/TnT Lite/Cyanogenmod?
See the very first post of THIS THREAD
Where can I find the different ROMs for the G-Tablet?
1) Stock by Viewsonic
2) Stock + Performance Pack by rothnic
3) Tnt Lite 4.1 by Roebeet
4) VEGAn-TAB beta 5.1 by gojimi, Roebeet and Rothic
5) Zpad Clean 3.0 by rothnic
6) CyanogenMod 6.1 Beta4 by bekriebel
7) CyanogenMod 7.0 RC0 beta3 by bittrix
8) Tnt G-Harmony-Gingerbread Elements by tjohnsonjr
9) Plus the great kernel enhancement by clemsyn.
Keyboard and Mouse Support
VEGAn-TAB: Yes; supports an external keyboard and mouse, but it is picky. I have tested three keyboards; only one worked (MS Natural Keyboard). The MS Arc and an old Compaq keyboard did not. All mouses tested worked fine (both wireless and wired).
TnT-Lite: In testing; will update when testing complete.
Cyanogenmod 6.1b4: Yes; According to iammuze, keyboard and mouse both work.
Wallpaper blurry
Some have pointed to applications that can possibly fix this (Wallpaper Set & Save, MultiPicture Live Wallpaper) but I have had limited success with both of these. A bit of experimenting with different wallpapers will yield a satisfactory wallpaper image until this is cleared up at a later time.
Screen resolution in landscape (horizontal) mode
1024 x 600. Remember that if you're making wallpaper, when using the G-Tab in portrait mode (vertically) will make the wallpaper shrink and there will be black bars on top and below the image. Best image size: 1024 x 1024.
How do I get a fully working Marketplace?
See Step 3 of THIS POST
Is there a difference between the marketplace that comes with most G-Tablet ROM builds or the new "improved" market?
The only difference is the appearance. In functionality, it is the same. The market hack is still required for the new improved marketplace (and reports are that it often takes more tries to make work than the standard market).
Problems with acore FC's
The problem is a corrupt contacts sqlite database. As the referenced post says, you'll be able to tell if thats the problem when there is a .db-journal file in the folder. The folder is /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts/databases/ *Note* this is not the data folder in sdcard, but the data folder in root (/).
Just delete the databases folder in /data/data/com.android.providers.contacts and restart. The contacts database will be rebuilt and re-synced.
Also, see THIS THREAD/FAQ
Why do I keep seeing repartitioning as a solution to install problems?
Because Viewsonic didn't partition the G-Tablets in a way that Android likes to live on. By repartitioning, Android feels happier and many issues/problems are resolved.
What is the recommended repartition ratio?
2GB/0MB is STRONGLY recommended for TnT Lite 3.00+
2GB/256MB is considered the default setup
4GB/256MB is used by many people, but see the aforementioned caveat regarding TnT Lite.
Why won't one of the devs answer my question/post?
Because they:
1. Have day jobs.
2. Are busy coding and fixing the next release of VEGAn-TAB.
3. Have seen your question 23 times already in this thread: the search function is your friend.
4. Are not being paid to read forums and go through 100's of posts, many of which ask the same question (although they do this out of the kindness of their hearts thankfully!!!).
Who are the devs working on the G-Tablet
VEGAn-TAB: Gojimi, Rothnic, and Roebeet
TnT-Lite: Roebeet
Cyanogenmod 6.1b4: bekriebel
I can't get X to work on my G-Tab. Can you fix it? (where x = desired ROM)
Maybe. Maybe not. Currently, VEGAn-TAB is in Beta which means that it's still in testing. While it may be stable and usable for most people, it doesn't mean that it will be completely stable for you. If you have problems, post them and be happy knowing that you're helping the community at-large. Some problems may not be reproducible, however. In that case, it may be a matter of a corrupt install, conflict with previous install, cache or data issue, etc.
Do the dev's accept donations for their work?
Some do; others don't. If you see a donate button on their profile, feel free. If not, they don't accept them.
How to get the stock VEGAn-TAB wallpaper without the letters?
See attached image in 1024 x 1024.
More Advanced Questions.
Can the startup "Viewsonic Birds" or "gTablet" screens be changed?
Yes they can. Follow the instructions in THIS POST.

These were grabbed from over-the-air updates. They are full recovery images that wipes everything except the user data.
To use this with a vanilla recovery, you need to rename the file to update.zip, copy it to the root of /sdcard, and also create a recovery folder with a file called "command" (see the 1.00 release for that file). When you run recovery, the command file will direct recovery to run the update.zip to update the system.

Great FAQ!
"Why won't one of the devs answer my question/post?" is so true. I scan this forum daily, but there is no way to keep up with all the questions that pop up (especially once it's back more than 2 pages). If you really need me, PM me - at least I'll eventually see the question. But, keep in mind that I get more PM's than you might realize, so it could take me some time to respond.
@ehunyadi as Robeet said Great FAQ. This will definitely help alot of people.
Now I just need to find free time at home to test out the vegan ROM.

Thanks, guys.
I tried to change the title of this thread to encompass all flavors of G-Tab ROMs but I think only a mod can do that.
I am going to start including info about all the different ROMs in here as well to help keep things simple in regards to finding the FAQ's in one place. This SHOULD help reduce the questions a bit. At least that's my hope.

OK, I am a n00b to the Gtab scene. I do read the first post 99.9% of the time, but when the first post leads me to an incorrect first post about how to install, I must make mention of that fact. The first post mentioned does not have any instructions for installing. Is there a step by step tutorial for this to be found?

Once you change it from the default, there's no known way to go back right now.
Edited to add: You can always use the image an image that is identical to what VEGAn-TAB comes with stock, but this has to be downloaded and selected from gallery/filesystem vs going back to the default wallpaper.

Good point; I'll fix that link.
As for a step-by-step, you can view THIS VIDEO that takes you through the steps of installing with Clockworkmod. Ignore the fact that it already has an OS on the G-Tab; you can do this with a fresh install as well.
Also, see THIS THREAD for step-by-step instructions. I'll fix the first post in the thread to reflect the change.

and s-off cannot be obtained. If you updated with s-off it is possible to revert back. Reference thread
Also, people who used HTC unlock and have s-on will have trouble flashing roms that are not gingerbread based.

This is really helpful if a person is new to the forums. Some Lingo, Jargon!!
S-Off: This term is used when describing the security radio. With S-on only signed ROMs may be flashed, when S-off unsigned ROMs may be flashed IE custom ROMs.
Root: This means the user will have unrestricted full access to almost the entire system stack. Another way of describing it would be, having administrator rights on a windows computer
Custom Rom: This stands for “read only Memory”. With Android OS, a custom rom allows you to change things that were un-changeable.
Hybrid ROM: When referring to the MT4G Slide. This ROM contains both HTC Sense and AOSP Theme.
(Unlocked)Bootloader: Loads the core operating system. Unlocked bootloader means users can modify what files the bootloader opens.
H-Boot: Hitting power+volume down after a power down or restart brings up the H-boot (skating androids). This is used to get into recovery and can also be used to flash files using the proper file name.
Fastboot: Fastboot is the name of a tool used to manipulate the flash partitions of the Android developer phone. It can also boot the phone using a kernel image or root filesystem image which reside on the host machine rather than in the phone flash
Zipalign: Is an archive alignment tool. The benefit of zipalign is a reduction in the amount of RAM consumed when running the application.
A.O.S.P "Android Open Source Project": Pure google source untouced by carriers and phone manufacturers.
SDK ADK: “Software Development Kit”” Android Development kit” A suite of tools that helps developers create software for the Android OS.
ADB: “Android Debug Bridge” Allows a user to control and interface with the Android OS.
SBF: System binary file. “I sbfed back to stock” Meaning, I reverted my phone back to stock using a system binary file with a stock image.
Kernel: This is the center of the computer operating system. It provides basic services to the other parts of the system.
Overclock: Forcing the processor to increase its clock rate (therefore more cycles per second). Normally used to get better performance.
Underclock: Reducing the processor clock rate (less cycles per second). This is used to get battery performance and increase processor life.
Undervolt: Lowering the voltage while still maintaining clock rate. This is used to help save power and heat reduction.
Frosted/Defrost: A term used when freezing (frosted) an application or unfreezing (defrost).
Bloatware/Debloat: The many useless applications that carriers add onto the stock os (bloatware). Debloat means that the bloatware has been removed.
Master Subsidy Lock (MSL): Many phones are sold below cost, (at a loss to the carrier,) with the expectation that the money will be recouped in the cost of the monthly service plan. The up-front loss that is later recouped is called a Subsidy. For this to work financially for the carrier, the user must not buy the phone and then use it with a different carrier. The carriers slap on a MSL so the user cannot switch service providers. The term "unlock" means to get the MSL code to free the phone from the carriers lock.

Blue6IX,
thanks for your help. You helped more than you think you did!

The system will serve you, the user, before itself, and will drop from memory things it still needs to write to process your requests. This can result in buggy performance or problems down the line, and lead to frustrating issues that developers of the ROM can't figure out - because no one else will have these problems. Please be advised of this.

Yes, thank you very much! Now the goal is to keep it up to date which will probably turn into more work than you want, but thank you!

Two threads actually.
Original
Then I made one for requests that people want in flashable zip form:
Requests
So technically, there is no need to 'finish' the first one, and I support my request thread as time allows. It's set up so any dev can come in and handle requests, and there are a few floating around here that would be more then happy to help.
by finish I refer to ekoee's post on shift+alt keys, either it never appeared or i could not find it at the time

Ah, good catch - i'd forgotten about that with everything else that's been going on.
Wonder if someone will put time into figuring it out?
I bet the answer to that will also lead to the answer for getting other languages supported on the hardware keyboard.
Yeah sorry about that, I haven't had the time to start pulling apart key mappings. Ill make sure to get on it when work settles down.

Btw I'm going to refurb the dev sections with links and guides on adk adb and fastboot .

What does "nandroid" backup mean?
I have backed up with the recovery and I have backed up with ROM manager. What is nandroid?

Nandroid is what clockwork mod calls the actual backup file.
Backup means to create a backup.
Nandroid is the file backup of your system . Hence nan (small) and droid the os. So you can also say you made a small android os .
Ill add this to terminology when I get to it. Hope this helped.

Very helpful info, I unrooted, but theunlockr guide stated that this would turn the phone back to S-ON, but it hasnt, i have the stock tmobile rom back on the phone, but HBOOT states I still have S-ON, is this a problem? is there a way to get S-ON again so I can start the root process over? or am is there shortcuts I can take to root now that I have S-off?
I actually do not know. I would assume s on is attainable. Why would you want s on, you can re root without going threw rev again.
Follow the root guide its easy enough.

You mean the guide from theunlockr? or another guide? if its another guide please post it? as far as following theunlockr method, in order to gain perm root it stated I have to first boot into recovery, and then flash the ZIP file, but when I try to go into recovery, I get a red exclamation mark, even though I have S -OFF
