Install Hard coded Windows Folder apps to SD Card? - General Questions and Answers

Is there a way to modify, hexedit, hack an app that is hard coded to the Windows directory in the devices memory and redirect it to run from the SD card?
I've tried using Windows live Mobile from the SD card and it says some thing about trusted certificates or that it cannot find it's files.
I tried Hex editing the exe to change the directory from "\Windows\" to "\Storage Card\" but it doesn't work.
My devices is getting low on storage memory and i need to install every app from now on to the SD card.
Another app that has some dll's in the windows folder is Skype Mobile,i also tried hex editing it to change the path is looks at it's dlls, but didn't also didn't work.
Tried with CECabManager but i figured it's not the cab who gives the app the directory's to its files, they are coded inside the app itself.
Anyone has managed to run Skype,Windows Live Messenger or any other app that is hard coded into Windows folder to run from the SD Card?
Cheers,Anti.

search for extdir or extend dir based roms
It is super fast but has some disadv toos..

I've seen it but it cannot be added to ROM as an app,it has to bee cooked into it.
And i have an iPAQ HX2415 which is using spiatees 6.5 ROM.
I had no luck finding the lastes Windows Mobile "Classic" ROMs,all i can find is "Professional" ROMs.
Can i use WM 6.5 PRO in non Phone devices o.0? cuz i saw icons like incoming call, incoming sms, incoming voice mail, unknown caller avatar and stuff for Phone in the dump i did from spiatees ROM.
Can i use WM 6.5 Professional ROMs and remove all the phone stuff?

please help me.....my programs are not starting...t!!!

I just bought a Orange M3000,it's my first phone with WM5.
Today I installed on my miniSD 3 or 4 programs (Resco KeyBord pro 4.20,a dictionary "Universal Translator",WIFI Companion and Resco Picture Viewer)
I restarted the phone and I observed that the GSM network is not recognized....and after that I observed I am not able to open Programs from menu, internet explorer....File explorer....TheactivSync is not working …..
I can open settings....Resco file Browser..Resco RegEdit...and a little program that transforms my Wizard into a memory stick….so I can copy files into my miniSD
I think that are problems with the new "keyboard" installed(the one from Resco)...I am not sure
I have uninstalled all programs that I have insaled today, I have deleted their files manually have installed PocketMeChanic...and I tried every thing I know to repair my Wizard.....I have reinstalled the resco keyboard from .cab files from mobile phone…
What should I do?
Should I format My memory ?Do I lose The installed programs form mini-sd ?
How do I reinstall the original keyboard ?
Please help me…….
Have you tried to boot up without the memory card? If so, and you still have the problem, do a hard reset. No data from the card will be lost, however most probably, the programs will not work as they usually make registry entries which are stored on program memory.
Yes,I just tried this ...I have the same problem... I think the the Keyboard program or the keyboard drivers are changed....

Install application in Storage Card directly

Do you know how to install an PocketPC application in Storage Card directly?
It seems to me that even if you precise you want to install the application on the SD card, the application is first uploaded on you PocketPC main memory and then installed on your SD card.
That's ok when the application has a small size or when you have lots of main memory left, but it is not always the case.
Until now when this happened, I had a work around: I went in the installation directory of ActiveSync, looked for the .cab and copy it manually on my SD card.
The problem is that this is NOT possible for every application, for example I want to install SlovoEd Sound Module Deluxe English (cf. http://www.penreader.com/PocketPC/SlovoEd/articles/Sound_modules.html).
This application is 20MB big !! so who has enough main memory available ?! how can I install it on my PocketPC ?
The problem is that for this application my work around does not work, since SlovoEd has not created a .cab in the installation directory (I have checked, in any other location as well). So how do I find a way to install this application in the Storage Card ?

I'm absolutely sure SlovoEd DOES store ALL the cab files under c:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\SlovoEd\. This is how I've extracted them for my various dictionary roundups.
Otherwise, \Windows\AppMgr\Install can't be relocated, unfortunately. I'll fill in a feature request for the MS folks to make this configurable as this is indeed a problem.
You're right, SlovoEd used to store all the cab files under c:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\SlovoEd\ , but since the beginning of november 2006 they have repackaged all there files and the cab files are no longer available under c:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync\SlovoEd\ :-(
I have looked in other directories and everywhere on my PC but can't find the .cab files.
I wonder what is this new SlovoEd package doing with those .cab files.
Checked it for ya:
c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\OUT1A0.tmp\Package\
(OUT1A0.tmp may be different in your case!)
I had a look into c:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp\OUT<random value>.tmp\Package\
and I could find the .cab files of SlovoEd !
Thank you for you help Menneisyys.
Problem solved.

Slow Vista file transfer to //Windows on device.

Hi everybody,
I am, as most of you know a skinner here on the forum.
So first of all i little explanation:
All dialers that I know of install all of their images in the /Windows directory on your mobile device. So when I skin a dialer I have to copy my files to that directory over and over.
In windows XP, the browser only had to load the file list from /Windows once and when it was done doing so, it blasted all images to the /Windows folder.
So I had to wait half a minute and then I just copied over all files, great!
Now I use Vista and it has to load then complete new file list for every file it want's to copy to the /Windows directory. With my previous dialers, I was ok with that. (+/- 20-30 images) But with the new Opal and Diamond dialer it has gotten a lot more. (total of ~350 images) That means I have to wait 350*30= 10500 seconds -> almost three hours for all files to be copied! And that is just demoralising!
So any suggestions on making this work faster are much appreciated!
I've tried to use Total Commander but it does not recognise my pocket pc and nor does FastCopy.
Thanks in advance (even for reading the enitre story )
Well, for me I had to connect my phone to my PC using the USB Mass Storage option instead of Activesync to increase the copying speed. I am using a Touch Pro.
That will prevent me from seeing the windows directory :/
Only sd card is visible then.

Your device has to refresh after every file copy, or Vista has to refresh the file list? What vista file browser are you using? Are you using Windows Mobile Device Center?
I have Vista Business x64 and I'm not having any problems copying to and from the \Windows dir. I will help you as much as possible.
It's not copying from the device but to the device that takes a very long time.
I'm using the standard file browser from vista and Ultimate x86 with WMDC.
My laptop (Windows Vista Home Basic) takes ages when copying files from my laptop to the /Windows directory on my device too. When I try to copy files for a Manilla2D theme for example, it takes about 5 hours.
In Vista make sure that you have "show hidden files and folder" deselected in Folder Options. Also, try disabling the "Show system files" option as well. This should minimize the number of files that explorer will try to display when refreshing, thus a speed increase.
I'll try to look into this more, as I just copied all the opal phone canvas files to \windows from my vista machine. It only took ~2 minutes to copy all the files.

But when I do this, I can't access the /Windows directory because its a system file?

Hmmm. Do you have your device configured with Mobile Device Center (setup to sync)? I ask because I don't sync anything with it. I simply use it to connect to the phone. Maybe this has something to do with it.
I'll also check the speed settings in Device Manager. Maybe there is something to adjust there.
One option I use is to pull the card and use a USB card reader to drag the files over. Lightening fast. The other is the USB connection option on some of the newer ROMS i.e. DCDs, Scrosslers (DCD variant). Has very fast directoru refresh and copy.

Vista has it own problems. Maybe do a double boot and start XP when you need to . . .
From an IT standpoint this is why many companies and people are not using Vista . . .
I know it is not the solution fo choice but it would work . . . .

Programs on Memory Card missing after Hard Reset

Im new to Windows Mobile and did my first Hard Reset on my Xperia yesterday. Now I am missing the programs installed on my Memory Card, for example TomTom, in the list of programs in WM. The only way I am able to access these programs is through a file explorer.
How do I fix this?
Thanks in advance // Thorell

Hi Thorell:
To reuse these programs all you need to do is create shortcuts to them under the windows->startmenu->programs folder and they will reappear in your programs under start menu.
This way you don't need the file explorer to reach the programs .
Thanks! It works!
If I may ask another (stupid/simple) question: How do I make a shortcut? I solved this by copying and editing an allready existing shortcut, but I assume that there is an easier way.
// Thorell
@thorell,
Just hold your stylus on the application and the menu will pop up. There is an option in there that says "Send Shortcut to Programs..."
One small correction though to what thesire has written. He is right but not all programs behave the same way. A lot of programs copy most of its files in the location that you select. However, there are many programs that must write things into the registry and even copy some files in system memory. In other words, even though you will see programs in your memory card, you will not be able to run them... not even by clicking directly on the .exe. You only need to reinstall the app.
Good luck

So what you're saying means that there is no benefits except more free memory in the internal memory when you install on the memory card regarding some programs? I thought/hoped that you could install on the card in order to not have to reinstall every program after a hard reset. This time I had only the TomTom Navigator on the card, and it works now, but if I had installed, for example SPB Mobile Shell or some other programs that in my (not on knowledge based) opinion are more integrated (spelling?) in the system, it wouldn't have worked?
How do I know that a program will run from the memory card after a hard reset?
Thanks /// Thorell

you are absolutely right egzthunder1, because wm behaves the same way as traditional windows and when hard reset everything that is copied to the windows directory and registery for the program to function is lost. I definitely overlocked this small, but important pointer. Thanks.

Is it Possible to instal a program compeletly portable on an SD CARD?

is it possible to instal a program on the sd card. like if i remove that sd card put in another phone the program will work. if u noe wat i mean like a portable application.
Most PDA applictions dont require installing
I install all software (except things like Home2, Resco Explorer etc) onto SD Card then when I hard reset or change device I just create a shortcut to the application in the start menu and hey presto they work
I would say over 95% of the software I use runs like this without installing with just a few exceptions I.E. Lextionary, Bubbleshooter, GPRS monitor and a few more then all I need to do is to re-register the ones that need it.
Give it a try, install your favourite application/games to SD card and try to run it from another PDA.
i did and some programs said the sound part of this program is missin lolol. so how do u make shortcuts.
total commander is a good program for making shortcuts
thanks alot. for the help @ strangetrick and rudegar. im trying cab installer wat u think of that.
Most programs work fine on the sd card, but a lot have registry settings that you will lose when you either flash, hard reset, or swap the card into a new device. Some programs will also install a .dll into the \windows folder when you install them to the sd card (Skyfire does this), so you have to keep that in mind. Use a cab analyzer to see where things go (SK tools, WinCE cab analyzer). Also, many programs will save settings in the \Application Data folder, so you'll lose the settings/cache/history unless you back it up.
I wouldn't put anything that runs continuously on your sd card (gscroll, aebutton, task managers and things like that). I've done this myself, and have found that it can cause corruption of the card. I think that soft re-setting is the problem. It's kind of like yanking a usb drive off your computer without powering it down properly. Definitely do not put FingerKeyboard on your sd card. I did it (like an idiot, even though the thread says not to), and it causes corruption very quickly (16 GB Sandisk). I also suspect that putting a bunch of apps that run continuously (or that you use a lot) on your sd card will consume more battery. At least, the sd card power-save options won't work if you have things running from your card, I suspect.
wow very helpfull thanks u @farmer ted.
A lot of programs do have bits and peices in the WINDOWS folder but SkyFire works fine without it and many others.
For programs that have registry keys and activation codes stored in the registry I just export them using Resco Explorer then before I reflash or hardreset I backup the contents of the WINDOWS\START MENU folder
Then when I have finished I install Resco, restore the shortcuts I want tap on the saved registry keys and literaly 95% of everything works.
I have used WinCE Can Anaylser to 'hack' custom installs of my Lingvosoft products (and a few others) which install loads of junk to WINDOWS. So the new cab files install wirh nothing saved in the WINDOWS folder and once again these run fine from the saved shortcut and saved registry keys.
But this is trial and error, some applications dont work and some do (nearly all in my case) give it a try.
yeah im having touble wit ma lingvosoft products. so ill try using wince cab anlayser
