SKype works like a charm on my phone.
Anybody know what the data usage per minute is on a Skype call?
As you might know, skype calls between 2 PCs (or in our case PPCs) are free, but it is possible to call from Skype to a conventional phone (home or GSM), here are the rates: http://www.skype.com/prices/callrates/#allRatesTab

He wanted to know how may bytes skype uses per minute in a regular call, to know if it worth to make the call, if skype uses 100k/minute and you have a 50Mb month rate for lets say 10 euro It will cost you 0.02 euros a minute + skype rate.
That's the kind of equation that he wants to make.

Approximately 400kb/min will you use with a skype-call.
Is there anything that can allow video calls over Skype or to chat to a PC webcam?
Good question, I have been wondering the same. Video calls on Skype using the front camera..?
skype is working on that..it should be aroun soon..
Thanks!
Can anyone confirm the 400kbps for a Skype voice call?

sorry, maybe I should learn to read. 400kb/m
According to https://support.skype.com/faq/FA151/How-much-bandwidth-does-Skype-use-while-I-m-in-a-call
Skype automatically selects the best codec depending on the connection between yourself and the person you are calling. On average, Skype uses between 3-16 kilobytes/sec depending on bandwidth available for other party, network conditions in between, callers CPU performance, etc.

3kBps is 1440kbpm, 16kBps is 7680kbpm. It still works out a lot cheaper to phone via Skype, than via the GSM voice network.

I know there are WM6 devices that can make video call, I'm asking if we put a video call application on our phone is possible to receive incoming call with video? Basically - No.
Video calling, even receiving, requires a 3G connection. Period.
(Of course, streaming video is another matter...)
ok.. requiring.. but is possible to have a 3G ---TO---> EDGE/WI-FI connection managed by software?
If the answer is no, there is an application that can do video call by VoIP:
example:
windows mobile phone ---> computer (cam)
windows mobile phone ---> home phone (cam)
windows mobile phone ---> windows mobile phone
windows mobile phone ---> 3G phone*
I've seen that skype for mobile don't support videocall.. other ideas?

Hi Guys,
I am trying to use VOIP for the first time on my touch cruise so please bear with me.
I am trying to use VOIPstunt with Frings.
Anyone tried this before ?
If i am calling for example Singapore which is FREE stated on the VOIPstunt website, does it mean as long as i have a WIFI connection, i can call anyone in Singapore using Frings through VOIPstunt for free?
Frings I don't know but I use x-lite. And yes it works the way you asked on wifi (free)
The free call of course works also on 3g and hsdpa but you may be charged data rate if you don't have unlimited data plan.
For the setup, this is taken from their website:
- Display Name : fill in your your name, this name will be displayed in the phone screen of the person you are calling
- User name : fill in your username, this is the username you used for the registration of your VoipStunt-account
- Password : fill in your your password, this is the password you used for the registration of your VoipStunt-account
-Authorization user name : same as User name
-Domain : fill in sip.voipstunt.com
Edit: I have free call to belgium BUT only to fix number and not mobile phone. But for singapore they say to mobile too. So I think you are more lucky than me.
Thanks for your respond.
Do you use VOIPStunt as well ?
I tried it on my computer and it totally suck! i can;t even hear what the other part was saying! It was so distorted!..
u experience this too ?
I 've used Fring and VOIPStunt. They do work together. The settings should be:
myaccount.voipstunt.com with your ID and PW.
Remember that VOIP sound quality can be not so good thru the phone. It tasks the phone quite a bit and the network speed really needs to be WiFi quality. 3G can sometimes produce decent results, but its spotty.
I use VOIPStunt on my PC at home and it works brilliantly. MUCH better sound quality over Skype's voice service. I use it EVERY DAY since I have G/F situation where I am in the US and she is in Malaysia.
Now when I want to call her from my phone, I use their SMS-initiated phone call option. For a 5 euro-cent per call fee, they will let you initiate a phone-to-phone voip call. So, you SMS the VOIPStunt line (+447624802856) with a message content that only has the number you want to call. Then, it initiates a call. First, you get a call on your handset. Then, when you pick up, it dials the other party. And voila, you have a phone to phone call via VOIP that DOES NOT use data service. it uses your normal GSM phone line. So, the quality of the call depends on your voice connection, not your data connection quality. If you are calling from a US mobile to a any Singapore landline or mobile number, the call only costs you the 5cent connection fee!
So, as you can see, I use VOIPStunt ffrom my PC using the software and data. But when using my phone, I use the SMS-initiated phone-to-phone, so theres no need for Fring, or any other VOIP software on your phone.
Oh and BTW, another advantage of the phone-to-phone is you can use any headset, BT, wired, or the normal earpiecem since its just a normal call to you!
I use 3g VideoCall from Telme,works fine !
I use 3g VideoCall from Telme,it works fine on my TC except for the video right now (they say they will release a new version in march or april).
You can download it (from the download section) and use it for free (or with an account just like skype)after registering for free as a Free Member from here : http://web2.telme.sg/cedel/index.php?option=mod_joinus
With "Route 60" activated (as a distributor) u can even call for free to 60 countries on fixed phones (from which 6 countries on fixed AND MOBILES for free)
I call then free from mi 3gphone to fixed phones, to 3gphones and also even to computers having the correspondent software from Telme installed (Deskcall NG)
I tried fring with voipstunt and voipbuster, I could not find my Voip contactlist and was not convinced so I uninstalled it.
Fring....
I've tried Fring to a Skype contact and their voice came out of the speaker at the back!
So I was in the house yelling at my phone. haha...
Admittedly, I was setting them up live and given they aren't very IT, as far as they were concerned
what was I doing, "why didn't it just all work, like a normal phone" "explain, explain, explain"
And I had been playing music out of it so perhaps it was locked to the mic on the back....
Other than that, there did seem to be a baaaaaddd delay.
I'll try it again....

Well, almost free. 5 euro cents per call. yes via GSM. They eve just expanded their service. Now they provide a number to call for each country. You call that number, then enter in the number you wish to call. If you have unlimited calling in your country, then again, all you pay is the 5 euro cent connection fee. Its awesome.

For best VOIP sound quality one should use a handsfree. Wired or BT - result is the same I'm using VOIP Buster Pro with my TC and Windows Mobile native VOIP and call quality is nearly perfect. No skipping at all with WiFi.

It depends on where you are calling from. Depending on where you are, you call an access number via GSM on your phone. Then, once that answers, it prompts you to key in the number you want to call. If it is a free destination, then you only pay local charges to the original number. In the US, it only costs me my "minutes". THe call is otherwise free.

no, and that is in fact very annoying because sometimes I use differents programs of Betamax like Voipstunt, voipwise, voipbuster, etc...(for different "free" countries or free SMS) with every time 12,50 € to pay for only 3 month and sometimes, they charge me or change the prices without notice !!
And I stay with credit I have to use with other prices than the prices when I put the credit. And they never answer to your emails !
The links are in the post.

Cool. With the way cell phone plans work these days, I have no idea why anyone would want to do this. I mean, who wants to trade minutes for data?
Speak for yourself. I have unlimited data on t-mobile, so this would be perfect.
Well, I got to thinking about it and "unlimited data" is only one requirement for this to make any sense, the other two being:
1) youre not signed up for Google Voice
2) its a short, international phone call

This app is working great over 3G. I have a T-mobile unlimited data plan and making international calls on the road works great. If they aren't online (free) then it is .02 a minute with Skype. The voice quality is the BEST I've EVER heard with a phone IP connection.
Edit: I have also used this version of Skype with a good Edge connection and the voice quality is still pretty good.
I have an ungodly amount of minutes, but that's not why I wanted this - the only place where I normally have WiFi is at home - thus, having a version to let me make Skype calls over 3G lets me use it anywhere, as opposed to only being able to use the app to call my Skype contacts while at home (where I have a perfectly good netbook for Skype).
Does this use data while running in the background (ie not on a call)?
The old skype app (WinMo) would suck the battery back then, eg 5 hours of skype in the background (with no calls being made and the phone being on standby) and the battery would go from 100% to 10%.
Hope this is more of a "push" approach to skype?
Can some one post up a new link or pm me this file...

Yes, Skype will suck your battery if you use it online all of the time. If you can't plug in your phone during the day then I wouldn't leave Skype online. I use Skype to make international calls and close it down when I don't need it.

original thread as far as i can recall.
Is anyone updating this somewhere as Skype updates?
Required :
1. The phone of course (Samsung Droid Charge), other Android and iPhone working too.
2. Wifi Hotspot.
3. An active phone number on other phone (CDMA or GSM).
4. LINE from NAVER or VIBER from Viber Media, Inc (Download from market) and many other app available.
Let's begin :
1. Connect ur Droid to WIFI hotspot, download the app (LINE/VIBER) if you don't have it yet.
2. Run the app and register with an active phone number. The app will send SMS with a code to the registered phone number that app needed.
3. Complete the registration.
4. Add the phone number u need to call to ur Droid contact.
5. Enjoy ur call with the app.
NB:Calling/messaging function only work to the relevant app registered users. Most app only work for Android and iPhone and a few including Blackberry.

Google Voice doesn't make VOIP calls, it requires an actual number to connect to. However, you could get a plan that allows you to make calls to specified numbers without using minutes, then set your GV # as one of them, and make all the calls you want without using minutes.
GVoice makes VOIP calls. I measured the bandwidth at the router when I was on WIFI. I also set up a phone with no service with a different phone number. I also tested GVoice on WIFI by changing throughput and testing jitter and the effect on the VOIP calls.
I used Groove, I didn't try the calls with another method, although a Gchat session should work the same.

Thanks for the post, I didn't actually catch that. I was just stating that GVoice does indeed use VOIP if it is set up to do so. I believe GVoice allows for free calls to US and Canada, as well as free calls from another country into the US and Canada.
Your solution is pretty awesome if you need that service. I would like to see an analysis of codec quality, delay, bandwidth usage, jitter, etc to see how it compares to GVoice. Google keeps saying that free GVoice calls will expire, but so far its been renewed. It will be nice to have an alternative, particularly a good, free alternative.
Have you tried your method with success? How is the subjective call quality and call drop rate, etc?
Thanks for the info

U need high speed connection/WIFI to get better call quality.
I have used these apps and prove it work succesfully. The only issue is the call have a delay about 1 sec, so u need to be patient to wait the answere after u speak coz ur voice will be heard after the delay.
Viber will only allow free calls to other Viber users, unless they changed that at some point. And GV must have changed then if you can make calls with it VOIP style with no cell service and only wifi, as it was only a call forwarding service before, meaning you still needed to have the ability to make calls through the phone.

I know you can use the web version of Google Talk as an endpoint for outgoing calls now. I haven't messed with any versions on device though (and if it works, we'd still probably have the audio issue on the Charge).
I used Google voice in Puerto Rico to place free calls over wifi. You can't be in airplane mode because it uses the normal dialer, but it does not use any cellular airtime to place the call.
Google voice integrates well with the android OS. My gf uses it to stay under her 450min plan.

Yeah, I can only speak regarding usage of GVoice with GrooveIP. Otherwise a phone call would have to be initiated in Google Chat. Without Groove, you probably won't know you have an incoming call, at least not in time to answer it.
My buddy uses Groove all the time on his WiFi with excellent results- it works okay on 3G in good coverage and it works excellently on 4G. I have enough minutes and crappy coverage so I generally don't use Groove a whole lot, but it sure is cool to be able to send/receive calls anytime to your GVoice number. I also set up the Google Voice app on the phone alongside Groove (I configured Google Voice app somehow not to notify/bother me). Groove does the phone calls and Google Voice app does the text. This way you can send/receive calls and texts for free without delays. It works brilliantly, and its nice to forward Verizon's voice mail to GVoice, then configure GVoice to forward an email for each text, voicemail, and missed call you get.
If I had better coverage, I would only use GVoice. There is a bit more delay with GVoice than a 1X call, I would say, but not bad.
Is it verified that Viber only works to other Viber callers?
I'm a little cynical that somehow the carriers will try to crack down on Google Voice users or that Google will at some point stop free calling.

It works to call anyone, but it is only free calling if the other user is also a Viber user. They may have changed it since I last looked though, but probably not.

Was wondering if others had this problem. I have the $30 unlimited data plan with T-mobile. It gives only 100 voice minutes, so I thought I could use a VOIP as a solution. Vonage sounds great.
However, I can only use it over the data plan and not over Wi-fi. The cellular data is ok for browsing but the lag is annoying.
Wi-fi sounds like it should be better but I can't use wi-fi to call with Vonage. It just keeps clocking and then errors out. But as soon as I switch over the cellular data, it's fine.
Anyone else with this problem?

Have you checked into maybe using google talk as an alternative? You can register and get your own number for free and use voip for texts/voice. I used it a long time ago on my myTouch 4g and it was nice. I set it up as a work number for a few months before I got another line. It worked great.

Unless anyone else had better results google voice doesnt play nice with tmobile prepaid or family shared plans. The google # will work but the forwarding feature doesnt work for the voicemail part of the app.

I thought about it, but I would have to change numbers. And also, the app that interacts with Google voice isn't free.
Vonage is free and when you call using that #, it uses the number that your phone is registered under. With incoming calls, I just have to use voice minutes, but that's ok b/c I can just reject and call them back using Vonage.
So has anyone gotten Vonage to work with Wi-fi?

-Well, first off, I don't use Vonage or any VOIP. But try SmartDial. I read its description on Google Play but doesn't say anything about Wifi...go check it out. :silly:
-Try KakaoTalk if you want. It's like Vonage and Google Voice.
Sorry if this didn't really help haha
EDIT: Kakao is more...social media, with unlimited voice and texting. And Viber is another app you can choose from...even though you'll probably have to switch numbers. See if Vonage can forward calls to a new number
