Hello... Over the past few days, my ppc has been turning off all of a sudden despite the main battery still having enough charge. When I checked backup battery meter in settings, it was no longer there. Prior to that, I remember trying to flash my device with WM6 with no luck therefore I reverted back to the original WM5. And then a day or two after that, while at work, my phone charge was completely drained -- had a battery low warning for the backup/internal batt but it was already too late for me to charge the phone so it shut down. When I did charge it, while the main battery charged to 100%, the backup battery was no longer detected.
I was searching for a solution through the forum but found inconclusive results . I was thinking of replacing the backup battery however I'm not sure if there is indeed one to start with (nothing mentioned in Atom Wiki). O2 no longer has customer support and where I'm located I don't have access to PDA repair shops.
Even if O2 Atom Exec's battery life is known to be crap , I really love this phone and would like to keep it longer. I hope somebody can help me out...

Thanks for the reply, orb3000. Quite informative link. I've got no problem with my main battery (lithium), though. It's the internal/backup battery that I'm concerned about. I don't know why exactly it went missing. There used to be 2 battery meters in start > settings > power. 1 is for the main battery and the other one for the backup battery (internal). It's the backup battery that's no longer being detected. My lithium polymer battery is still working ok.
Oh and by the way, I very recently just flashed my ppc with N-Touch WM6 OS (absolutely awesome!). I noticed that the battery life is a lot longer now compared to how it was with the original WM5. But my backup battery meter is still missing

Basically there are so many threads regarding battery life. I am a battery ***** meaning i do everything i can too gain as much battery life as possible and searching and searching for different ways to improve it.
CUSTOM ROMS
They definitely have a major factor on battery life as they include tweaks and also remove a lot of junk that doesnt need to be there. For me Provens GSM rom has given me the best battery and performance. So for CMDA you will have to test several roms for at least a wk and then pick whichever provided the best.
RADIOS
These are entirely MAJOR battery related and of course signal and GPS related. THERE IS NO BEST RADIO. They all depend on where you live. For me which has recently been released 1.08.25.20M1 Raphael GSM provides great signal and AMAZING battery life. I am located in DC. The radio that i used to use and seems most common 1.02.25.28 Raphael GSM. Again for CDMA you will have to try different radios after finding which rom gives you the best experience for at least a few dys.
So too sum it up
Rom, Radio, Tweaks, & Location play a major part in battery life
Custom roms such as Provens tend to have all the tweaks and best radios selected already.

I really didnt have to use this program as it was already done in the custom rom.
Before i forget, sometimes the % that displays isnt always correct. Mine tends to hop around sometimes. Also if it reaches say 8% or even 2% you still have alot of time left, i came across this while trying to drain my battery fully a few times and i was waiting for hrs while it was extremely low and windows kept giving me low battery warnings sometimes it even stayed the entire night.
Should you do anything special right out of the box? Power drain the battery? Not charge it until it's fully drained, etc etc? Any tips there as far as maximizing the life and effectiveness?
Thats a valid ? i should have included that. However you will get mixed opinions, some people say too charge it up fully and then discharge fully. Some say charge it fully initially than just charge it whenever you need too.
Personally i would recommend fully charging and discharging it at least 4 to 5 times. Basically dont charge it until it turns itself off, then i just leave it off and turn it on after its done charging.
After that just charge it whenever you need to, but dont TOP IT OFF, which means always keeping it at 90% or above. Also i dont use car chargers unless its an emergency as SOME say the fluctuation of power in the car could cause issues and weather that is true or not i just rather be safe.
specs say the battery is lithium-ion polymer. Same as my helicopters battery pack. (i thought interesting: its actually rated 10 mAh less than an 8525 battery)
"Unlike nickel and lead-based batteries, a new lithium-ion pack does not need cycling through charging and discharging. Priming will make little difference because the maximum capacity of lithium-ion is available right from the beginning. Neither does a full discharge improve the capacity of a faded pack. However, a full discharge/charge will reset the digital circuit of a 'smart' battery to improve the state-of-charge estimation"
So technically, doesnt matter but doesnt hurt. Yet could help keep the battery level and charger accurate.
edit: oh! an even better read on the issue: "How to prolong lithium-based batteries" http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
I'm new to smartphones
So yeah, I'm new at all this and have no idea what you are saying when you are talking about radios, so I don't know how to do what it is you are saying to do, so any help in that area would be great! Thanks so much.
I'm thinking of buying a G1, but I'm put off by all the complaints that it has horrible battery life. Does the cupcake update help this any? How long do people get?
The cupcake update hasn't been released, yet. At first, I had a HORRIBLE battery life, but after calibrating the battery, it's got a decent battery life. I haven't really taxed the phone much, though.
I know cupcake hasn't been released yet, but the code is open and people have already flashed their phone with it. So I mean, "Does cupcake (so far) help battery life?"
You can calibrate the battery all you like .... it's still really crap !
Just as well the phone is soo brilliant at everything else that it doesn't bother me!

from experience, no not really. mind you, the version we have working atm is no where near the finished version. so maybe they'll implement a better power management or something, i dunno.
thats if they ever release the damn thing
The battery just doesn't last on the G1 no matter what you do. You can extend the battery life to a couple days if it sits idle and has the right settings, but that's boring.
This phone shines through use so expect to charge it daily. If you do things like tether, stream music, web browse, constant email/texting, and etc, then I would say keep a charger handy.
I bought an extended battery (2600mAh) off ebay for about $45 and i'm a pretty heavy user with irc, music, youtube, twitter all that jazz and my battery lasts 2 days. Sure it's a little bit thicker, but it stays in a jean pocket all by it self and everything is just great.
I think The battery life increases with cupcake as i flashed the latest cupcake build (sync-ed & build yesterday by me) it usually used to go down till morning when i sleep but today it was 70% left means very much...
Also as i changed the statusbar battery icon to show 1%, 2%, ... 100% i was able to keep track of my battery...
lets see i ll stay 1 more day on cupcake and let u know...
Version 1.1 helped a lot with battery life. Most of the initial complaints were with version 1.0. Most of those initial complaints were also very shortly after the initial introduction when a lot of new units suddenly hit the market -- as with any battery device, it needs time to break in and calibrate itself. Note: cupcake is to be called version 1.5 (there will likely be no 1.2-1.4). Expect 1.5 to have better power management than 1.1, it does have a newer kernel with better power management features, and no doubt many optimizations in userland tools.
how can you calibrate the battery?

Are there battery benchmarks somewhere for 1.1? I've been googling but it's hard to find real numbers and usually they don't mention the version. How much battery life do you get?
With normal use I wouldn't expect to get more than 24hours. I reckon by switching everything off I could double that. OTOH as the phone charges via USB I just leave it charging whilst I'm working - it'd be sat on the desk anyway so the extra cable is no hardship.

By using it.
You calibrate the battery by letting the phone completely die while it is on, as in let the phone shut off because it's out of battery. Then, give it a full charge from the house charger, preferably while not using the phone (while sleeping, for example). Should be done twice a month or so for this phone.
You should know that modern batteries dont have the "memory" that old batteries do.
There is no need to do the above.
They don't have 'memory' but modern batteries still have a break in period. You'd have to probably have a solid battery like thin films to avoid that.

I know that, for example, While it takes 5 minutes of watching video for the battery to move from 10% to 5% it can take 30 minutes to move from 5% to DEAD with a non calibrated battery.
I train my battery every so often. I can get a solid 3 to 5 hours of talking/texting/browsing/downloading/playing games/etc on a single charge.
I don't think its too much to ask for. It's in line with other phones of like capabilities. Upfront people were just pissed that they couldn't sit and play on their G1 for 10 hours a day with no charging in between.
You can't do that with an iphone, itouch, psp, ds, portable dvd, or laptop computer. People were expecting it to perform better than all the things listed, but the only thing technological about this phone is the software. It has the same tech restrictions as every other portable device.
i thought that the new batteries nowadays do not need to be conditioned anymore? that whole break in theory was based on the old nickel based batteries. but now they no longer needed since batteries are now lithium-ion batteries that do not have that "memory state". correct me if im wrong because i always hear both arguments.
Hmm if I remember correctly the actual battery (LiCoO2) doesn't need conditioning or has a memory effect, but its the electrical component/chip that tracks the capacity and over time though repeated charging they tend to "forget" the actual capacity of the battery so you need to drain it completely then charge it completely so it re-learns it again.

calibrate the battery is a joke!
Li-on battery no need to do that!
Hello I have searched the threads looking for a rom and radio which will allow me to reach a full day's use or more using my extended battery. I have my unit set to download rss feeds every 15 mins as well as emails. Of course it will be running software such as SPB shell which will be updating the weather as well. So far with the current 6.1 rom which I am running along with radio 1.18 the unit doesn't seem to hold a candle to this use. I have read in other threads of the 1.18 radio being the best just would like to know which is the latest 6.1 with the best battery consumption. All help is appreciated in advance
On my personal experience
Toml 8.2, 8.5 and 8.9 are very god stable ROM´s with great battery life
Test them all and decide for yourself!
Hey I am at work at the moment during a flashing to radio 1.18 I lost all my info on the device (I didnt read the instructions had my sd card in slot (long story)). Anyhow was wondering what was on average your usuage and consumption of battery. I am debating buying a bigger battery (bigger than the one I have) which I am eyeing on Ebay. As you can tell I can't wait to have my unit flashed and with a reliable battery life. I just recieved the phone and love it just hate carrying around a charger
When I was using the recommended ROM´s my battery life was aprox of 1 day and a half using:
1hr WIFI
2hr Bluetooth
A lot of calls
With my original battery from 2005.
I would not buy a bigger one, Unis is big enough to put a bigger battery, I would buy another original battery.
After many tests I've gone to Tomals 8.2 Vanilla rom, It's stable good at everything and its vanilla so you install what you want
aktopshooter,
I have several batteries. Under constant useage (no wifi/gprs/bt/ir, backlight on, phone on, SD in)
Best PU16A 1620mAh lasts 3hr 30mins
My only 3200mAh (double-size battery) lasts 6hr 10mins [I bought of eBay]
I repeat, this is under constant useage (test conditions) with backlight continuously on.
I usually tend to carry two normal batteries if I know I'm going to need juice, rather than the double-sized one for same reasons as Orb, Uni is big enough without a huge battery sticking out!
I would like to thank all who replied to my question. I have loaded a tomal rom and also started to use my regular battery versus my extended my battery. I was blow away by the normal battery for some reason it seems to out perform my extended battery. I am easily getting through a day with out even worrying about charging the battery through out the day. I am downloading mail every 15 mins and checking rss feeds every thirty mins plus lots of texts and calls the battery handles it well. My extended battery is nice but I rather the slim oem battery it just makes the phone feel hell of sexy and appealing

Unfortunately, Uni is not known for its great battery life compared to other devices simply due to the demands of a large screen. Various ROMs will be more or less economical when it comes to battery, but don't expect a huge improvement.
As far as getting a battery on eBay, be very careful. The last battery I purchased charges and drains at the same speed.
Also don't buy batteries from dealextreme, they are crap
Hi!!
Reading this post, I will go a little "off topic", but where to buy on line good battery.
My 3200 is dying.... and I lost my standard battery cover...
Can anyone give a help: standard battery and standard cover...
Thanks

Thanks, orb3000, I forget that I was in the Universal Mobile 6 directory..... Need holidays
any other more suggestions on those who use battery efficient roms? besides which is more efficient in battery life? wm6.1 or wm6.5?

wm6.1 have better battery life than 6.5
best for me 8.2 version
Hey. Today after little less than year in standing with no working I thinked that take to use again and order new keyboard repair kit, taked my phone out of case and I found battery like balloon. After turn on phone, all worked and battery had around 10% loaded. How can happen with battery thiskind of change, 2 month ago was all normal. Battery is original Sanyo ST26C.
In second 8310, my friends phone, works only 2 days after fresh WM install. Same problem is with my wifes MteoR.
With battery problem is clear that need to buy new, but help needed with the second problem.
Thanks.
I have my Tornado since 2006 and my battery suddenly also "grew" like a balloon. You're not the only one.
cheers
I have HTC devices since 2005 (Amadeus the first one) and the batteries are still good - see my investigations at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=5558383#post5558383
My personal mantra is to not let the batteries drain empty too often. I don't do anything special to that, but whenever I am at my PC (office or home) I link the device to the PC to let it sync and load the battery. On average I would say that my batteries live their life between 80-100%, occasionally going down to 60% - result: see above thread.
It's dead.
Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but your battery is dead. Time to get a new one. It's happened to me on other phones, it suddenly grew a bulge and wouldn't work at all. I got a cheap battery from ebay and now all's good.
Hi,
The battery on my Tab S is goosed, anyone know where I can source an original? I don't want to go to the hassle of replacing it with a fake from eBay/Amazon etc.
I got this one for myself...

Hi, I'm also looking into this. How did it work out for you?
I just installed the battery Neozen21 mentioned today. Went in without problems. It was 62% charged right out of the box, so I suspect it is fairly fresh.
It took much longer to charge than the old one did, so I have high hopes that the original capacity has been restored.

A fresh quality battery in these Galaxy tabs takes twice the time to charge the first time they are run straight out of the box. After that, the charge will settle to normal, especially if you charge/discharge properly as much as is possible.

All credit to Neozen21 if this turns out to be the real deal -- which leads me to the point: How is it working out? I find the best test of a decent twin cell solution (like the battery in the S 10.5) is to turn it off, charge to 100%, disconnect the charger and then see how much charge the battery reports if you power it on (or reconnect the charger) after 1 day. If it reports anything less than 99%, it's going to drain abnormally quickly.
Can anyone drop me a line and let me know how they perform?

It seems to be marginally better, although not dramatically so.
I've run AccuBattery Pro on the new battery, and it says that design capacity is 7900 mAh, estimated capacity is 7450 mAh. Unfortunately, I did not run the app on the old battery before replacing it, so I have no comparison.
I'm glad I didn't spend a lot of money on the battery...
