Disable honey comb in 6.5 and get old today ? - General Topics

Is it possible to arrange icons in row form rather than honey comb (hexagon) form. I am just not able to get used to that placement. It is too darn difficult to read. I know the argument is that its easier to press, and many here have started liking that form, but It is unreadable for me.
Another question is, is it possible to get the old today screen in 6.5 some how. I have my weather program which show hourly weather on today and it is so convenient.
I did lot og googleing around, and I came accros posts which says that getting old today is possible, but those may for ver early releases of 6.5
Thanks in advance.

Dunno about honeycomb, but for old today, go to Settings > Today > Items and click on all the items you want, and it'll revert to the old Today screen.

Thanks for reply. I have reverted back to 6.1 as I could not stand the above changes. May be I need give myself more time with 6.5 to get used to it. But I will certainly try again, now that I know I can get my 'Old 6.1 style Today" back.
Thanks.

It gave you back only the Today screen, but not the old menu. No use for the stylus for such setting (hexagon)!!!!

Relocate Lower taskbar/system tray WM2005??

Is it possible to relocate the lower taskbar where the bluetooth/running program icons sit??
I want to move it down into the softkey position as i have found a program to disable this from this site:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/viewtopic.php?t=27331&highlight=16
From Buzzdev.net it seems that the lower taskbar is in fact HHTaskbar and on searching the registry for this please see image below.
I think it must be controlled by a registry setting no?? any ideas?
Registry seems to point to /windows/shell32.exe
anybody able to look into this file?? maybe something in there, something must instruct the taskbar to appear at that exact location so hopefully it can be moved?!
Images below show my screen current and my screen when taskbar activated
Thank you for taking time to read this.
Darren_Bridgeland: there is another program out to hide the tray, but I forget what it's called. I'll be releasing an update of VJToggleToday as soon as I can finish off a few things on it. Hopefully be working on it this weekend... but I say that every week
This is an issue you guys need to think about though:
- hiding the tray is fine, but consider that when we do need access to the Tray, which occassionally we do, would you like it as an overlay as you have it now, or revert all of the changes made by VJToggleTodayWM5, which will optionally be:
- toggle tray
- shrink start bar (top)
- shrink soft buttons (bottom)
- expand Today screen
I future version of VJToggleToday will do some more funky stuff with the Tray, but for now, we need to consider - should I hide the tray/unhide and revert all changes, or hide/overlay similar to the current "feature" in the old WM2003 version you're using.
V
Thank you for answering so quickly vijay555 I was just looking at your personal website, great work your doing there
I absolutely love the clean look your togglenew program has given my device but unfortunately I agree that the system tray is needed.
All im hoping for is a way to relocate the tray into the old 'new menu' position at the bottom underneath Ilauncher in my screenshot. I can then reduce pocketbreeze size and away i go lol
Is this possible?
But if I mush the tray down to where the soft keys would be, what about the sofkeys?
Relocate the tray above the soft keys?
VJToggleToday works on relatively simple ideas, but the permuations are the pain of it - if I shrink the Start bar, I have to account for it in the Today screen, the soft buttons and the Tray. If I hide the tray, I have to account for it likewise. However, if I don't hide the tray? If I don't shrink the SoftButtons? Und so weiter.
VJToggleToday is going to need a config dialog I think. And a clear head to program stuff like tray toggling. The basic code is done though, I hope. I haven't looked at it for a while - so busy on VJCandela cross compatibility and something else - old, but new, coming soon
V
If you look at my screenshots I currently have my screen full, Ilauncher is sitting right at the bottom where the softkeys WOULD BE. Im asking for the tray to be INSTEAD of the softkeys (so to be EXACT the tray needs to be located 26pixels lower than its usual postion). Then I can reduce pocketbreeze by 26 pixels.
At the moment the tray cuts right through Ilauncher as Ilauncher is sitting in the tray & softkey position.
Is this clearer??
I understand that Darren.
In my WM5 screenshot, I've minimised the soft keys to 2 pixels rather then remove them completely, on the basis that you might still want to tap on them with the stylus (I do this with my Magician's start bar (top), which is minimised to 2 pixels and then overlayed with a 24 pixel PhoneAlarm skin
However, if you KNOW you will not need this, ie only use the hard keys to access the softmenu, then I can make it an option to entirely remove the softkeys (however - the SIP icon overlay still seems to enjoy popping up. I'll investigate that later).
I'm intending to make it optional to configure the size of the softkeys and start menu, from 26 pix to 0. Maybe make it bigger then 26 pix for VGA screens? That might be cool.
V
That would be a good feature to be able to configure the menu's size. So just out of interest the togglenew program, does that disable the softkeys or shrink them? Ive remade my wallpaper to be 26 pixels large and nothing appears clickable, I assumed it completely disabled them (think im getting confused lol)
Trouble is even if you disable/shrink softkeys how will you move the system tray to the bottom of the screen??
It cant be via another program as people will want to butt programs up to the tray, so you'll need to find the code that currently locates it and alter the code perminantly no??
You're using the old VJToggleToday which is Wm2003. That's hardcoded to hide the New menu on Wm2003, and by accident the soft keys on Wm5. But for the Wm5 it's more sophisticated internally (hence then new WM2003 version as well, which will be more foolproof).
The new version will permit resizing of the soft keys, and I guess the start menu (for those who use start bar replacements).
Moving the Tray is no problem. On my WM2003 I used to use it like this:
VJHideStart
To permit hiding it, but bringing it back optionally. Future versions of VJToggleTodayWM5 will (hopefully) have similar options.
It cant be via another program as people will want to butt programs up to the tray
Click to collapse
That's all part of the difficulties involved in writing it. There are lots of contingencies to take into account.
V
wow how did you move the tray?? was it hard/easy?
could i manage it??
Sure you could manage it, but through code. PM me if you want to discuss.

Is there any way to have the latest beta version of VJToggleTodayWM5 ? Thanks in advance.
Not really jolas: if it was ready to release, I'd release it, but I've been too tied up to work on it for a while. I'll try to have a look at this and a couple of other apps this weekend... I'm also releasing a couple of other new-ish things this weekend, so busy busy
V
Thanks for your reply vijay555. Please, try to release this app, it will be very usefull for me and a lot of other people.
Hope this weekend it a positive and productive one for you Vijay and cant wait to see the results
Hope to recieve a PM about the coding, but will understand if your trying to sort the program instead.
Take Care
Any news about VJToggleTodayWM5 ???
its next on vijay's priority list, hes just finished a couple of other programs. Hopefully we'll start seeing some progress over the next week or 2
Thanks Darren. See you're posting from Buzzdev!
Yes, as I've been saying for a while, my developments tend to dovetail together. I finally got a chance to do some work on VJFullscreenTSC this weekend, which I hope finally works properly. It's had minimal testing but it worked fine on my VGA universal.
But from there I learnt a couple of lessons I needed to bring back to VJToggleToday. It strikes me that this app should not be too hard to finish now. That's no promise - I've had some very concerning news recently about Vijay555.1, my little baby who is on his way. So as I'm sure you'll all understand, family priorities
But certainly, next on my plate is VJToggleToday, finally. And research has given way to a couple of new ideas that should also help a few left handed chaps out. But one app at a time...
V
ooh I hope vijay 555.1 is ok. Ive just had a little boy 3 days ago so good luck with that.
My 2 year old was a very traumatic pregnancy and first 15months of life so I wish you all the best
Many thanks Darren. News could be better on Vijay555.1, but it could be worse. All the best to your little one! Now the real hard work begins. I must be the only guy looking forward to having an excuse to be up at night, with nothing to do but program and look at the kid..
I'm only managing an hour or two coding on weekdays, and that's slow progress, barely one app to look at per night.
Yesterday was VJFullscreenTSC again (check out the new screenshots), but VJToggleToday is certainly next. I'm resisting VJTrayLaunch, which I also have some ideas for...
V
Please give us a beta!!!
Is any beta of VJToggleTodayWM5 ready to be releasead? Please, give us something test!

Change the look of your start button?

I was browsing from work yesterday and was redirected to a few sites, other forums, and somewhere I saw a picture of a wizard home screen that had some program installed. It changed the start bar icon to a very vista-ish style look, green circle silver bar, plus it switched the clock and the close button. Unfortunately, I was at work, so I didn't have much time to really take a good look before I had to get back on the phones, so I lost the page. It may have been a rom, as I was reading the thread of a rom when I saw the screen captures of it, but I'm almost positive it was just a program using different skins. I've spent the last 3 hours trying to find this program again, trying to retrace my steps, but to no avail.
If anyone knows anything about this program, any info would be great.
Thanks everybody!

WM 6.1 Homescreen weather plugin

Hey everyone!
First off I want to thank Dr. Gonzo again for the 6.1 rom. It's great and love it!
Second, I was using the HTC home screens that user tho made (found here) and I really got used to having the weather plugin on the homescreen. I really like how the homescreen is setup on this new rom, but I still want a weather plugin for it. Is there any way to add that plugin to this homescreen?
thanks.
if i was you i would try the following:
install the home plugin on your device. copy the .xml file from the plugin to your harddrive. open it and find the coresponding <plugin...> entry for the plugin. Then copy this entry to the xml-file of your skin of choice and there it should appear again... if it does not work or you have no clue what i was talking about, give me report.. i will try to do it for you,
Yea that's what I was thinking about doing. I just did not know if it would work or if it would look alright. I'm at work now so I don't really want to mess with it, but I'm going to try that when I get home.
ok. let us know if it worked when you're done
Wow this is a lot more difficult than I had thought. I can't find the weather plugin in the HTC Home screen and as the other thread may have tipped you off, the Sliding Panel home screen is very confusing to work with.
Basically what I would like to accomplish is to have Weather on my homescreen, while still using the Sliding Panel motif. So like if I could click over to the right next to where it displays the time it would show the weather. I'm going to keep working on this, but if anyone would like to jump in and help me I'd appreciate it.
Thanks.
according to the slide panel. I think all you can do is to manipulate the panels with basic configurations read out from the registry. It is not that easy to create something new, but i think a good point to start is always the manipulation of the welcome center, because this one is what most people need when they like to make "their own panels". The only way something will create a new slide is to code a plugin which is dedicated to appear in the slides. and still someone has to figure out what basic options are needed to create a new panel or to figure out what these guids are respectively.
Can you provide the htc home xml at least? it would be nice to have all extracted files in a zip file, so i do not have to install it again and pic all files out by myself.
Well that's sortof bad news that I can't create something new, however it might still be possible to edit the home panel to add that in?
I attached the xml for one of the home screens. I looked through it all and couldn't find the plugin for the weather but maybe you will have better luck than I will.
well, that is exactly what i meant. First choice, change one of the existing panels. If it works then and someone can explain those damn GUIDs I think we would manage to get it work on an own panel.
As far as it is "documented" in the XML (which is quite interesting i think for non wm6.1) this is the plugin-option for the htc home:
<plugin clsid="{B0C8AC4B-CDDC-4010-AAEB-076A2A6EB171}" name="HTCHome" height="88"></plugin>
This means to me, that cannot extract the weather-plugin for the homescreen unless you know how the home-plugin was made and the weather-plugin is a standalone, built-into htc home.
if you install the htc home, and edit your slidingpanel.xml with this tag somewhere, the home plugin should appear. I added the .xml for Frau Hottelmanns panther scheme with the htc home plugintag so you can see what i mean (not sure if the comment-tag is allowed, so just remove it before uploading to your device).
This is all I can do for you right at the moment.
Alright, Thanks a lot. I will try it when I get home.
I am really sorry that i wrote some damn ******* before It surely is possible to create new slides!!! It is just not possible to create a slide with ANY functionality
i just had the idea, that we may figure out what the minimal options for a slide are and then go on to figure out what the others are. But if we know the minimal options we could for example copy the testuiplugin-panel and try to get it work with the entire htc home plugin in it.
just wanted to write that, so you would not be that hopeless
Ok, what i found so far is:
- The htc home plugin works on wm6.1 as usual
- It seems not to work with the bronze-plugin in the same theme
* when loading the theme, the htc home plugin is displayed but vanishes as fast as the bronze-plugin is loaded.
* i played around with the height-attribute from the bronze-plugin but it seems to have absolutely no effect
- what i discovered in one of the previous skins is, that there are at least two major plugins for the htc home plugin which can be loaded in a theme. there is the notificationbar where the calls and sms etc. are shown and there is the htchome where the weather is displayed and so on.
- I also found that the exe-file for the weather-plugin is located at /windows/weather.exe so maybe its possible to configure the "output" on a call of this file and the weatherplugin is displayed (which means that we could put it into a slide)
- I also found an old thread here on xda for the "customization" of the htc home plugin, but it seems that the way the plugin works has changed since this thread and the version gregory released
- what is missing is something like a documentation on the htc home plugin, so which parts are implemented, how are they called from the homescreen etc. maybe gregory, if he's still around here has any idea(s) ???
- i just got that the weather.exe sets the city, downloads and refreshes the local weatherdata. So the output has to be somewhere else.
sounds like you are onto something here. Since the HTC home weather plugin is causing some problems, I think I am going to take a look at some other weather plugins. They might make it a little easier. I'm specifically looking at SPB Weather and Fizz Weather.
The only problem is, once I install them I'm not really sure how to put them into the slide panel. I'm going to play around with it and I'll let you know.
A tip from my side... always start from the delivered .xml files for the theme. mostly you can see there how they are implemented in the home-screen... then you just have to copy it.
i am wondering why the htc home plug does not work with the bronze. rinkus iconbar does, and its also just another plugin implemented... It also would not make sense that microsoft put something in the code of bronze which disables other home plugins

You mit be better waitin until HTC release a WM6.1 Standard ROM to see if HTC customize bronze to have parts of there Home plugins integrated and extract everything from a ROM then making a cab file to install it .

this was my first thought, but as you may know, there are people out there (yes, i am one of those ) that do not like to wait and have things first and before all the others do

finally...
I just tried it. It ran great on my XV6800. But yeah it was just ok and I don't see myself keeping it.
already taken it off. Maybe i was expecting too much
yea, their original Pointui was much better. This Pointui 2 was such a hassle to install that i could never imagine purchasing it. Also, it just doesn't look very nice.
For the long wait, and all of the "Viva la revolution" quotes on their homepage, it was really a let down. The scrolling does work well though.
That's my take.
The pointui tool to warn the users to the release was not working I did not receive no warn.
I'll try it now.
Well this is a beta (I have to remind myself), and I am going to use it exclusively all day. Maybe I might change my mind. But if not then back to good ole HTC Home.
edit: it just went blank so I had to reset it via the today screen. forget this i will go back to HTC home now.

i second that!
I'm divided. There's not a whole lot to it, but it's "widget"-based and adding more widgets will certainly improve things. As it is, I like it okay. It's prettier than HTC Home and more functional and responsive than M2D, in my opinion.
I've yet to find a Homescreen replacement I really like. HTC's solutions are all weak in the functionality department, I think. SPB is pricey. Winterface is buggy and too minimal. Home 2 isn't perfect, but I think it's pretty close to what I'm looking for, so I'll keep it around for the moment.
I like that it plays nice with the existing Windows top bar instead of trying to replace it like some homescreen replacements. I'm not a big fan of the top bar, but replacing it is always flaky in my experience.
I'm surprised it doesn't include a dialer skin -- didn't Home 1 have a dialer?
I'll continue to look for the perfect UI too, so far my favs are winterface (buggy - not on my fone) and RLtoday. Hopefully, as said before, this being a beta it can only get better
(expect in the case of longhorn and vista lol)
Off topic but I have been using Home 1.5 forever since it is so stable for me. What are the benefits of 2.0 and is it worth it? I don't want to fix something that's not broken.
edit: Back on topic. Yeah it will be interesting to see some custom plugins and themes for Pointui 2.
I think they should have held off a bit longer until they replicated more of the functionality of older versions / BellUI. I hope there's more to come apart from applets because useful as they are they're not a full solution.
However as a basic framework it's cool, and with the addition of user made applets it's got a lot of potential. Will have to see how it goes.
Code:

I tried it and took it off in 5 minutes.
What I like - it offers me a completely different UI feel from what I use (WM 6.1)
What I don't like is the lack of plug in support.
1. Contacts - it doesn't recognize current contact programs (icontact burt edition); it's contacts program doesn't bring in photos (booo)
2. Weather - it didn't pick up my city so that is a complete waste of a tab.
3. Programs - why have a program tab/menu but not automatically pull up all the programs I have. I don't want to reinput that into the ui.
At that point I was fed up.

I am glad some people take some more time to evaluate software. You do have a favorite contact tab with pictures. It is quite easy to add your own city for the weather tab. Alle your programs are available through the menu button. there is probably a lot more functionality you did not discover. Just try to look in the community site of pointui and you'll be surprised.

I looked but didn't want to have to do it AGAIN. I already have my contacts with pictures on my phone that is set (icontactbe6.4.5) and I like it better.
I looked to put my city on the weather and it didn't come up. Why waste my time at this point.
I am looking for improvement to how I use my phone and Point UI wasn't it. Plus I like using QuickMenu to get to my programs. If I didn't have soft-keys on my phone it may be a better option, but I do and it isn't.

It's fine if you don't like Home, but emay was just pointing out that Home 2 DOES do the three things you're asking for.
The contacts manager absolutely does use contact photos.
Adding custom cities to the weather tab is definitely possible, it just requires a quick edit to the applet's XML, and there's a walkthrough on PointUI's site for doing so. They've stated that they'll make it more elegant in the future, but it IS possible now.
There's a full programs list accessed through the menu -- what you were looking at was the "quick list" where you add your favorites. There's a different spot for the full list.
Keep in mind that this is very much a "1.0" release right now. It's stable, fast, and functional, but lacks a lot of the polish and power that will be added as the community adds new applets and the official team adds the features that will make up the "Pro" version.
Personally, I'm REALLY liking Home 2 so far. It's just very solid.
I haven't tried every homescreen replacement out there -- just HTC Home, M2D, M3D, SBP MS 2.0, and ThrottleLauncher. And Home 1, as well.
Home 2 definitely has the best combination of functionality, speed, stability, and flash that I've seen.
I love POINTUI
I found the first version (HOME 1) a year or so ago to use on my PPC. This program proved to make my phone experience much more enjoyable. I have recently attempted to place Pointui 2 on my Tmobile Dash with no success. I know in time they will port ot all to this device, but first they must finish this PPC release. I can not waste until this is available to me.

Porting Bottom Start button from WM6.5 to WM 6.1

Hello, guys!
You all are professionals and know almost everything about different versions of WM. I have one very important question: is there at least minimal possibility to port somehow this WM 6.5.5 feature - bottom start button to the old WM 6.1 firmwares?
Thank you very much in advance and sorry if this question is a foolish one
It's sort-of possible but would take a little work. Why not just use a 6.5 rom instead?
I think the greater challenge would be resizing the top bar (smaller) and the bottom bar (larger).
Thanks for the answer!

Because it seems more slow to me. Official WM6.1 is very fast and simple as I see, faster than 6.5. I've tried a lot of 6.5 builds. But what I really miss in WM6.1 - is this bottom start button. If it be there - it would be the best firmware for all people like me, who like simplicity and usability instead of these huge slow animations and pictures.

Yeah, it's useful too. Would be nice if somebody experienced considered this interesting and made some investigation...
it's easy to erase the Start menu link from the top bar. you can just overwrite the WindowProc and replace/enhance the WM_PAINT method and here you go.
It's no problem to launch the start menu. But changing the bottom bar is a *****! You could just overwrite the paint method as well. But this is not the full truth. The problem here is that every window got it's own bottom bar. So first you'd have to go through list of all windows/processes, retrieve it's menu bar and from there finally replace the window proc. Then you need to watch out and terminate your window proc if the application closes. And of course you also need to know if a new program is starting up. A nice-to-have feature of this solution would be that you can explicitely tell what happens when you hit the X button (hide or close) and don't need another hack for it.
Thanks a lot for your explanation, RAMMANN. It's very clear.
I can't do it by myself due to lack of experience. Well, the thing left is to wait if somebody experienced wants the same
Well it's a project that probably involves A LOT OF soft resets during development. I was originally planning to make the WM 6.5.x bottom bar look like PHOTON (the WM 7 that got abandoned) but when I figured out it's not THAT easy I postponed the idea for the time being, and will rather start with a smaller project (enhancing bottom bar of WM 6.5 start menu). But I reckon this might still be a very interesting project! hmmmm

Haha - that's exactly what I'd been doing years ago. I abandoned it as well, probably for the same reasons.
I think a decent compromise would be to set the Start menu in your left bottom bar on the Today screen (pretty easy to do, just registry change) and use a button assignment for other programs. If you install one of the start menu replacements (Green software) you can overwrite the start icon with something blank.
RAMMANN is right - a lot of work to repaint all those application windows!
littld, thanks for your answer too.

Could you please give some links to these tweaks? Thanks in advance!

Well I didn't give up yet. I didn't even start dev for it. I just coded few lines to print something like "Hey your bottom bar is hacked!" in the Manila and start menu bottom bars. This is a very interesting project and has potential to allow a lot of things like Photon style or even an Android style bottom bar and I mean not only a standalone app like Androkkid but a full system replacement. I'm still looking around for an efficient way to realize this project and first things first so I'll be doing a start menu enhancement to warm up

I don't have the links but you can search. You want an app called VJKeypress - one of the keypresses will launch the start menu for you. Make a shortcut (.lnk file) for it. Search for how to change the left softkey text and program (somewhere in registry) to the new VJ link.
Thanks for your answers, guys.
RAMMANN, when you have some progress on this project, please, update this thread. I think people would appreciate it.
Thanks again!

it's easy to erase the Start menu link from the top bar. you can just overwrite the WindowProc and replace/enhance the WM_PAINT method and here you go.
