GPS possibly running in background? - General Topics

I am about 4 weeks into Touch Pro ownership and I have some days when the battery is dead before lunch. I think that sometimes the GPS isn't shutting off when I exit my sat-nav (it used to do this on my Kaiser, but I had a handy flashing LED to tell me it was in operation). TO doesn't have this useful feature - how can I tell if it is still running?
I have looked for a titlebar icon or something but nothing. Any ideas?

Start -> Settings -> Task Manager
It tells you what is running.

i would agree task manager, but..
found the local task managers on the htc devices very basic and not very helpful ..i had similar problems with battery drain and used this relevant task manager to find the culprits.( which i am sure ,you might have on device already or otherwise download from here http://www.freewarepocketpc.net/ppc-download-task-manager.html (free ), for me its more detailed ..to check processes running, rather than check for applications running ,etc..good luck

See the running apps in Task manager of settings.

No, you misunderstand. When I exit the SatNav software, the application ends, and isn't in the task manager, but I suspect that the GPS chip is still powered up doing its GPS thang and draining my battery. The Kaiser has a flashing LED that tells you the GPS is in operation so I know it can run without an associated app.
Basically I want a flashing LED like I had on the Kaiser, but a software version.
I'll try willcor's suggestion...

My Trinity/P3600 does the same thing. The software opens the port which fires up the GPS circuitry. But closing it doesn't always shut it down, and it's pretty greedy on the power. My solution is a soft reset when you are through with the GPS app.
Another great battery drainer, but not GPS, is if you are on a similar strength signal boundary between two GSM base stations. My house is a prime example. Minor fluctuations in signal, has the phone constantly requesting a cell transfer from one to the other. Two minutes later it wants to switch back. Put an FM radio next to it and you can here the periodic dit-dit-dit dit-dit-dit radio backchat flattening the battery.

plse ,check again...process, not applications...
in the task manager, ..to recap ,in my previous entry, i said that the htc task managers are basic ..
you cannot see any processes or cpu usage etc, etc... in default htc task manager ? , only open applications ?
,now you could have closed an application (or you could think so, but it is still open in process and if you have a decent task manager, you can access these functions.and terminate it....so you do need a good third party task manager ,not just go and look in default task manager and think its ok.
example, have found personally on many occasion that i have closed an application ,and my phone keeps connecting to internet for some reason ...
on checking, with a decent task manager i found ,no application open .. but just to find it still open in the process tab..? terminated it and problem sort out .(remember there is a lot of software that have bugs ,errors ,or just bad software or not compatible with your phone..?? )
further, other software also drained my battery and same story ..application checked ..nothing ,but found relevant culprit ,i thought i closed, open in process..!!
now i am not saying this is your answer...but if you want to get anywhere ,first get decent 3rd party , task manager of you choice, that you could check further than just applications..!!
good luck

Internet Connection Starts itself

Hello guys, I have one problem with my HTC Touch Cruise, Italian Official Rom.
Sometimes, with no pogram in task manager, internet connections starts itself, and if I push on disconnect, after 1-2 seconds it starts again, and the only way to stop this is a soft reset; can someone help me please? As I told, there is no program in the task manager when it happens, so I can give me no answer about it. Thank you all!
Why is it a problem? (You can set an Auto Disconnect option...)
Check Windows update, RSS Hub, email accounts, HTC Home - Weather panel,... and any net related apps if they refresh automatically...

1) Could you tell me how to set auto disconnection? Thank you so much (it's a problem because I pay it)
2) I'll check every program, thank you again!
Best thing is to check all the apps suggested. things like auto synchronizing email, or auto updating weather, can all cause the data connection to start.
Then you can use a tool like Schap's Advanced Config (search for it) to auto disconnect data connections. It's a pretty good tool overall for configuring other things in the system so always handy to keep around on your device.

Thank you guys for your help, tomorrow I'll install that tool and then will let you know about it!

Vox crashing when using internet connection

In the last week or so, my VOX has become very unstable when I use applications that access the internet. I thought it was just some new apps that I installed making it unstable, but I removed all the recent apps and it still shuts down between 1 minute and 5 minutes of using the internet.
Apps that use the internet vary from pocket IE to Viigo to PodcastReady. I have not yet seen it crash when I use apps like Live Search, but I suspect that it would if I used it enough. I know there's trouble when pocket IE causes a shut-down -- it's an out-of-the-box app that isn't really prone to crashes like other 3rd party tools might be (Viigo and PodcastReady are beta, after all).
But I've never had my phone just shut down before -- not even with beta software.
One thing that I will say that I've recently been fiddling with my proxy settings and "work" "internet" "pass-through" types of connections in "Settings > Connections" in an effort to get my phone to access the web while connected via USB to my work laptop.
But I believe I've gone in and reset all the changes I've made. Plus, should those types of changes cause a crash??
I'm using the latest ROM from HTC (the 2008 update). I'm seriously considering upgrading to a 6.1 ROM to help resolve, but if it's hardware-related, then taking the time to upgrade (and re-install everything I've done) will be a waste of time.
Any info/insights into what's going on??
Thanks!
Jon
Phone Just Quit
I had a similar problem with my S710; tried all the ROMs, added, deleted software, tried all kinds of things, removed some programs, etc. Even went back to the HTC ROM. The only thing that solved my problem was to replace my battery. After putting in a new one, I've not had a single lockup in weeks. Before I was having them daily.
OK, that is weird. How could it be battery related? Was it the OEM battery?
I have to say, my battery level seems kind of erratic lately. It goes from 32% to "shut down" almost instantly...

Script to disable 3G unless manually launching Opera?

I, like many others, have my device setup to check my email for me every half-hour. Originally, this killed my battery because the connection wouldn't drop. That was fixed with the advanced config tool (set the time-out to three minutes).
Now I've a new question. I'm almost positive someone has already come up with this, but evidently my forum searching skills aren't up to snuff, because I can't seem to find anything.
I've enabled the 3G switch in the Comm Manager and, unless I'm specifically using it for web surfing, I leave it off. (Checking email works fine on edge.)
What I'm looking for is a script that automatically enables 3G when I launch Opera, YouTube, ICS or any other app that I would personally be interacting with and then disable 3G again once I close that app.
Hi,
not exactly what you requested but ...
Chainfire is developing an App that will do this and many more

[SOLVED][GUIDE] Samsung B7320 Omnia Pro - FAST GPS - Google Maps OPTIMIZED settings -

I have been using this phone over a year now, and I have re flashed it at least 10 times, every time to get a taste of a new rom for this phone(currently running 6.5.3), although this phone is cool, but gets sluggish, some time, though I managed to tweak it to work fast, which I will be discussing in later threads, in this thread I am going to answer a simple problem, where the users are unable to use GPS with Google maps to get exact pin-point directions. I found a flaw in the settings, and this generated either "GPS signal too weak" or did not get the right lock. After this setting, you will gain a lock on the satellites almost instantaneously, when you're under the open sky.
SO HERE IS THE TWEAK:
START GOOGLE MAPS APPLICATION.
GO TO MENU (RIGHT SOFT KEY)
ENTER SETTINGS
SELECT "GPS SETTINGS..."
NOW HERE BY DEFAULT IT SAYS "MANAGED BY WINDOWS" CHANGE THIS TO "SET MANUALLY"
SET COM PORT TO "COM3:" AND BAUD RATE TO "9600"
SELECT OKAY, CLICK ON "USE GPS" (SO THAT THE TICK BECOMES GREEN.)
RESTART GOOGLE MAPS, ENJOY.
Google knows everything even on the roads, even in cities like New Delhi, which are densely populated, there was ever this incidence that this device and this awesome technology failed me, it is great to have such tool in your pocket.
PM me for any other queries for this phone.
Cheers
can install any other os on it ?

[QUESTION] G8 Plus killing process after some time

Hello all.
I'm facing an annoying problem with my phone. After some time with no use, almost all apps in background are killed, and the are reopened everytime. I don't know how much time it takes to kill the apps, but is like 30mins to 1hr, I think. If I don't use an app after this 'timer', the app is killed.
This is annoying mainly with games, because they are reloaded all times. BTW, Lords Mobile is the only game I have now, but the issue persists, and not only with Lords Mobile. ANY app get killed, even Swiftkey, for example.
To get worse, seems the phone kills important and crucial services and process, also. I now use a bluetooth headset, and if I don't use it before the 'timer' runs out, it loose conectivity. Bluethoot itself stay active, but the headset is disconnected, and I have to connect it again. Think the chaos when you receive a call and aren't near the phone, trying to accpet the call and the headset don't give response?
I tested the headset with another devices, and it don't get disconnected. Unfortunately, I don't have another headset to test, but I guess the problem is the phone, or the way it manages backgroud apps/services/process.
I tried to disable a lot of apps to free RAM, no success. Tried to change some developer settings regarding RAM use and/or bluetooth settings, and no go also. Batery Optimization (or adaptive battery) and/or exclude an app from optimization had no effect.
I take a look on Google, and some people are facing bluetooh problems when connected with wifi, but isn't my case.
Any clues?
Thanks in advice.
