Hi Guys,
So I have the HTC Magic from Rogers running a Hero Rom right now.
I am not sure if it rooted because when I tried to root the device (using instructions from the unlockr.com site) my phone got stuck on the rogers screen.
So I just installed the hero rom and the phone came back but I am not sure if the root was successful?
Is there any way to find this out?
This is the wrong forum for this post but if you have a Hero ROM installed you have root. Here is the best guide I've found for rooting the Rogers Magic, it also tells you how to check for root.
Clinton
Thanks!
The easiest way to test if the device is rooted is to open another command prompt in the tools dir and type
adb root
Click to collapse
If it returns that adab is already running in root, then you're all set.

The link above is for instructions claimed to work with all HTC 2.1 Android handsets. I've been trying to get this to work on my Hero but I keep getting stuck at step 7 with my phone offline and unplugg/replug USB does not change it from offline to recovery. Anyone else have luck with this?
why not use unrevoked or the the how to here
Won't work for me. I'm not using Sprint and my build number is newer than Sprints so I can't flash it.

bummer.. well i would ask the op of the root method on that other forum. i haven't got a clue about that root method.
Check out Droiddog.com site, they've posted a video (actually a two parter) on this rooting method... It is not easy.
I'm pretty sure you can just flash the RUU that has test-keys, and then root that.
Use Regaw's
Like mrinehart93 said, just downgrade to the RUU ending in .5, then follow these instructions.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=694572
If you follow them exactly you will end up with rooted stock 2.1 with that same RUU. I actually just rooted for the first time except loaded this ROM, which is stock using the updated RUU.
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=703267
Good luck.
dosnt look easy though !!
I appreciate the responses so far but you all still don't understand. I'm not a Sprint customer, and my current software version is 2.36.556.1. I CAN'T downgrade to one of Sprint's RUUs (already tried just for kicks).

just tried, step 7 adb devices and nothing i dont get any kind of recovery menu. only the initial white screen recovery, no offline device menu
I'm thinking that the problem is Windows not executing the adb devices command fast enough. I'll have to try this again later booted into OS X or Ubuntu.
Hi Everyone!
I have a HTC Magic with 1.5 and HTC Sense (32a - black edition from Three Austria).
I wasn't able too root my phone or to install custom roms because I didn't want to make a "GoldCard" - and I am honest - it was very complicated (especially for 32a).
Now I have read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=747598
Can someone please answer me the following questions:
1. Will it work on my version of the HTC Magic?
2. Will I be able to install Custom Roms (e.x: Cyanogen)
If the 2 questions must be answered with NO - can anyone give me a real simple step-by-step description of the procedure?
Thanks.
Greetings from Austria (Europe).

1. May be. In notes to 1clickroot application writen, that it uses exploit. There is no stats what rom has/hasn't this exploit
2. There is one method. To install any custom ROM you must change stock recovery to custom. To do this, you must get root (su binary) and flash_image binary (if your ROM hasn't).
Then you can custom flash recovery via flash_image
Code:
adb shell
su
flash_image flash recovery /sdcard/recovery.img
Then you can flash custom ROM via recovery (according your current radio 3.22.XX.XX aka old_radio)
This way used on HTC Tattoo
Has anyone tested this on a Magic 32B with 1.6?
Universal Androot is working on these phones. Find it, install the apk, run it... you will then have root...
Then through ADB you install your recovery, then through recovery you install your rom.
Takes about 20min minus if you need/want to change radios/spls
When flashing a rom i get the error: "No Signature"
EDIT: My fault.. Did something wrong installing the recovery

Excellent! I read a tweet from Cyanogen:
Carriers patching exploid I guess. At least their response to security holes is getting better even if it takes away a vector for modders.
They should just give up and step into 2010. Not everyone wants to be spoonfed.
Not give up on patching blatent problems, but spend more tike fixing them and less time developing things like nand lock.

I know that this 1-click root is taking advantage of the exploit in some roms, so after reading this tweet from Cyan, it doesn't seem that it's going to last for very much longer. Next OTA and next generation devices may not work with this method.

hi, i tend to agree with you. i did run the universalandroot.apk. i did get the superuser permissions apps. however, when i tried to run titanium backup and adfree, i got message saying that they can't access the root privileges. when I ran busybox installer, it said that my phone is rooted but busybox is not found.
so, if anyone was successfull in rooting their htc magic 1.5, please share some information to do so.
my phone is htc magic 1.5 pvt 32A which i bough from Three in Australia.
thank you.
wait, there has been a 1 click root for the mytouch 3g all along?! dang...

CONFIRMED working on a 32A Magic with 1.5 Sense UI!
I just put my hand in the fire, ran the RUU and tested the APP.
DISABLE install Superuser.apk OR IT WILL FAIL!

Yes - why disable??
You still get superuser you just dont get the prompt to allow or deny it on your phone...
Did I not write clearly enough?
Because it wouldn't work for me if i left it enabled.
And after this I am able to install a custom rom? Or do I have to put the recovery on first?
The application only enables you to flash a custom recovery and then from it you can flash any ROM you want.
my intent is to get android 2.1 on the dream from 1.5. I have tried the old method of using adb through cmd, however as soon as i type root shell it says permission denied and i have tried it numerous times on both 32 and 64 bit windows 7. I than tried using flashrec which keeps saying fail to flash....anyone know whats up?
First this is a Question so it should be in the Questions and Answers section. And there is also a search option or Google. Not sure if you have the 911 patch for Rogers with the perfected SPL but if you do use this, if not try this.
You need to use the root method for the Droid (exploid) if you've already upgraded to the perfected SPL (911 update)....
Click here and follow this guide.
If you don't want to flash a CM rom, just download another rom and use it instead of the CM rom mentioned in the guide.
I got a new phone today from AT&T. I upgraded to the new ATT Gingerbread using their update button (I wasn't thinking). I like the stock rom...will probably keep it...but I need to be rooted so I can sideload! Help!
I tried Bubby's tool...it just said something about update version being older than what was currently in the system...so it wouldn't work for me! I'm about to try ace-hack-kit...hopefully that'll work for me!

I was able to root with attn1's hack kit just this morning with Gingerbread. btw. Sideloading is now "legal" unknown sources checkbox is in the stock GB rom.
Unknown sources
Strange...I didn't see unknown sources in the stock unrooted gb upgrade. I saw mock locations...but not unknown sources. Update...the Hack Kit seemed to work. Now I'm working on S-off.

its there...just under Applications.
Ya its in stock gingerbread I got it without root right under applications in settings
Just a little side note:
I flashed today the new Inspire ROM provided through the HTC site. There are 2 things I found.
1. If you flash over a custom ROM using the PC method (using file RUU_Ace_Gingerbread_S_Cingular_US_2.47.502.7_Radio _12.56.60.25_26.10.04.03_M_release_200368_signed hosted on HTC's site) you will go back to total stock, loosing all rooting ENG-OFF etc. You will have a plain ATT ROM. Even recovery will be reset to HTC. No CMR anymore. It might be good to know that you get full stock if you want to return your unit....
2. Good news is, the old method is still working except that the USB drivers act up. I got back to rooted by reinstalling HTC SYNC and leaving it on. ADB only worked for me (Windows 7 32bit) when phone was set to sync and not to "charge only".
Hope this helps somebody.

If you have ENG S-OFF, then that is strictly a function of the engineering HBOOT image and flashing a new HBOOT will clear it, but if you have Radio S-OFF (which is typical of most of the rooting methods available for Inspire/DHD) then flashing a new HBOOT (or any or all other images from an RUU) won't clear radio S-OFF.
Hey everyone not new to the forums could not remember my user name so I created this one. My issue is I had an htc inspire 4g s-off rooted with cyanogen 9 rom installed I had no problem running the Ace kit with the old inspire 4g. A while ago the phone was ran over so I bought a replacement and went about the same way I did before to achieve S-off and root and ran into some problems. The phone is 2.3.3 gingerbread I have installed all the necessary drivers and ran the tool kit. I am having trouble running the root kit the first time I ran it I got an error saying /sdcard/PD98IMG.zip no such file or directory rm failed for /sdcard/pd98img.zip no such file or directory gold card goldcard.img and than the following installation already exists.. so it continues and reboots the phone to htc logo with black background than just boots to homescreen and the tool kit says radio downgrade failed eiter goldcard failed or usb connections not working 100 any help would be appreciated ive attatched some screens of the errors.
Solved issue might help future users
So I found out what had happened and fixed the issue. I hope this helps future users that come across any issues. Somewhere a long the lines the phone I had purchased already had an unlocked boot-loader so what I ended up doing was running a command prompt and trying fastboot to re-lock boot loader with no luck I don't know how the person who sold this phone online messed it up this much. So I tried powering down and booting into bootloader via power volume down and clicked fastboot and it worked. The command I used was
Code:
# fastboot oem lock
After Re-locking the boot-loader I still came across an issue and found out there was a custom rom installed which I have no idea how the previous owner did with s-on still so I located stock RUU att inspire 4g courtesy of marsdta's post which can be found on the forums here is a link to save any one else some time http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191959. I used the gingerbread RUU as my phone was stock with gingerbread, I found this out the hardway trying a froyo RUU. After this I could not install the stock RUU following exact instructions I was stumped as my phone would not accept the stock RUU. All it did was just sit at waiting for devices. So here is what I did to solve that issue I powered down the phone and boot into the boot-loader, selected fastboot, and than ran the stock RUU exe, which then did the trick instead of errors it actually installed. Once stock RUU was loaded I was than able to successfully run the ace tool kit. Which worked flawlessly. Now I have s-off, root, cwm, and cyanogen 10.1 installed without a hassle. Figured this information would be usefull to any one buying an att inspire4g/DHD that had been used before. Knowing this information 5 hours ago would have saved me so much time. I hope this saves the next person time who decides to purchase one of these phones not knowing exactly what had been done to it as some re-sellers neglect to check or mention what they had done previously to the device. I even went as far as installing clock work mod recovery touch which worked like a charm do not use the 6.0 or higher version as they do not work or at least did not for me. This was as simple as getting the 5.8.1.5 cwm touch and flashing it via fastboot by navigating to the directory in which it was located and used this command
Code:
# /fastboot flash recovery "recovery-clockwork-touch-5.8.1.5-aace.img"
-replace file name in parenthesis with your file name-
boom done and done I really hope this helps out any future xda visitors that run into these types of issues
