Team,
I am looking for some real help here.
I have a (Vodafone) HTC Touch Pro and have been using this for the last 6 months. I have a condition where my sight is at a fixed focal length. Reading SMS and EMails on this phone is very difficult for me and, at times, impossible. I use glasses but do not carry them with me at all times.
Does anyone know of a way that I can increase the size of the text on SMSs, emails and other areas of the phone? Here is what I have done over the last few months with no luck:
System Text - Basic
I have set the system font size to the biggest available through:
Settings -> System -> Screen -> Text Size -> Largest
I have also ensured that the Sensor Wheel is working when viewing texts by moving this clockwise - the text is at its largest.
This is still too small for me. :-(
Software
I tried using the AdvancedConfigurationTool from http://www.touchxperience.com/
Still no luck there.
I also changed the theme in the hope that I would be able to increase or change the text size - nope.
Finally I used a bit of software that allows the system fonts to be changed, even adding new fonts to the interface (sorry, can't find link). While this updated all text sizes the SMS text remained the same size.
Does anyone think this is the Vodafone branding preventing me from changing the font size? I would not like to invalidate the warranty at this point.
I like the phone but I am really finding it difficult to use as normal. Does anyone have any ideas?
Cheers,
Ricemonk
Thought an upload of what the SMS text is like would help:
I know this may look perfectly normal to almost all users however when on the HTC Touch Pro screen this is much smaller and difficult for me to read.
Open up Messaging and select a Mail Account. Then click on an email to view. From there, go to Menu -> View -> Text Size and select whatever size you want.
This action also effects all other txt in Both Mails & SMS.
Thanks for your reply treo927 however this was already set to highest as I changed the system text to the maximum.
It looks like I am destined to move away from the Touch Pro after only 6 months and on to a Blackberry.
ricemonk,
I recently had the opposite problem to you ... the fonts were too large, they were massive in SMS and email. I tried everything to reduce them in the mail settings.
I recall that I managed to fix it with a font setting from IE ... weird I know, but they must be connected. I cant now find exactly what setting I altered, but it was something in internet explorer.
A
adamcullen,
Thanks for your reply - I will take a look and fiddle with the settings and let you know how it goes.
Cheers,
Ricemonk
Ricemonk, try SMS Tweaker http://handheld.softpedia.com/progDownload/SMS-Tweaker-Download-62457.html
It's a free program that lets you set the text message font size in normal mode (not threaded mode) up to 16 points. It looks pretty big to me. I hope it works for you.

Thank you. This has helped me increase my font size. I appreciate it a lot.

The Messaging application in WM6 (SMS, email etc.) uses a very large font. You have to scroll a lot to read a lengthy message.
WM6 has screen font control settings (>Start>Settings>System>Screen>Text Size) but these only seem to affect the 'home' screen.
Is there any way of getting the nice small WM3 font size back for emails and SMS's?
The Text Size setting actually DOES control the text size in messages. Sounds like you have some other hack enabled that is messing with it. Pocket Outlook uses Internet Explorer's rendering engine to display text, if you have an IE hack going, it can affect PO.
Hi Looper - did you ever find a solution? I'm in the exact same boat. The font size is killing me. My IE browsing font size is smallest but that doesn't impact the rest of Outlook
God damn it... I had the same problem and spent half a night on resolving it But there You go!
Navigate to:
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\RichEditHostFontSize
and change the value from 10 to 8
Thanks, Pajak!
This is an excellent hack. Not only does this make it easier to read incoming messages, the area for composing a message is now 2 full lines (instead of the dreadfully annoying 1.6 lines or whatever).
Muchas gracias!
i canr find HKLM where is it?

i have an htc diamond 2 , only problem is on sms massages , text is too small and difficult to read, any ideas on how to make text letters on sms bigger???
thanks
Hi!
1) Slide touchflo to the settings tab (the last one)
2) Press the left soft button that should say something like all settings (or maybe "more", I don't have a WWE ROM so I really don't know what the button label is). This will bring up the regular windows mobile settings dialog.
3) Select the screen or display icon
4) In the screen dialog select the last tab at the bottom, I should say something like text size
5) Slide the text size slider to desired value
6) You may have to soft reset the device for the changes to be effective

PK
Edited the thread title for a little more clarity.
Also, have you tried sliding your finger on the zoom bar? I know the original Diamond supports zooming SMS text with the capacitive area.

Hi!
I forgot about that simple solution, at least it works in my diamond2

thank you very much for your advice, i have try all but unfortunately nothinkg works, on received sms text still too small, any ideas ? or any program that might fix this?
Thanks
Hi!
Could you please provide some more information regarding how you actually reads your messages. There are at least 3 different places to read a SMS
1) The touchflo SMS tab
2) The touchflo contact SMS tab
3) The regular windows mobile messages application
The suggested solutions mentioned so far only changes the font size in the regular windows mobile messages application (alternative 3). I think the font size in the touchflo interface is hard coded by HTC, and is not changeable without decompiling the touchflo script files and changes the values. This is not something you wants to do, I guess there are only a couple of people in this entire forum capable of performing that task.

PK

ok , nice question , now we getting somewhere , on regular windows sms i can read the text size which i have selected on my system - screen -text size, but needs for someone to play around with a couple of buttons to be able to see that text, also is not that user friendly , (for me at least).
now on the other two cases touchflo sms tabs and touchflo contact sms the text is very small. the last two cases i find it friendly and easy to use and navigate around your sms history with that person.
Thanks a lot.
Regarding SMS editing
DO you know how to solve the problem of the textbox size (to small, you can see only one or 2 lines) when editing an sms from the sms list view ? (e.g. when you want to reply on the same windows where you read the received sms).
Thanks
On WM6.1
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Inbox\RichEditHostFontFace
That's only the text box that you type in, not the window that displays the messages. If anyone know the messages one, let me know
In settings there is a setting where you change the text size. Make that bigger and SMS will be bigger..
Recently, I've made this for quite some time but didn't release it to the public because it was buggy. (Though, I think someone released it)
Today I finally found some time to fix it so I can share with you guys. I'll let the community help each other out if there's problems.
As usual, code is in github. Cyanogen has grabbed *some* of the codes so it'll be in the next CM.. hopefully.

Thanks! Downloading this now.
Fan of your work you know I have to try.
Confirmed
Works well. Thank you!
I like it, but for some reason the text of my messages shows up as Dark Grey on the Black BG, which is unreadable. Any way to fix this?
any chance of screenshots?
Really love the way it is looking. Nice and smooth. Black background is sleek, alternative layout is great to see in the stock app. The only thing (which is very small and doesn't bother me really) is with the black background enabled, would it be possible to have an option to set the visibility (right now, it is kind of dark, more so when the screen is dimmer) of my text.
Thank you very much for all the hard work you put into all your mods. It is a great improvement over the original Mms.apk.
It is already in the new CM.
Works great.
looks real nice...any chance of adding an option for mass texting? dunno if it's possible but that'd be great.

Can't you already send text to more than one person at a time?
i think all you have to do is tap on new message and add the name or numbers to the senders list

yea but I meant like ChompSMS allows. Gives you a checklist of all your contacts to easier send a mass text.
SMS delivery reports
There is a problem with the delivery reports for SMS on this version which is released in CM5.05. Sometimes the envelope does not show up at all even though "delivery reports" is checked for SMS.

this is exactly what i was about to bring up haha, arctu does your mod fix this or is it the same as cm 5.0.5 ?
my mod was the caused of the bug. haha. CM uses partial of my code. i'm working on fixing it + CM mms.apk latest patches.
Since you seem to know quite a bit about the MMS backend, could you somehow incorporate something for At&t users? Our MMS send limit is capped at 600k I believe, so whenever we send a MMS, the image needs to be resized or compressed to be below the 600k limit.
As of now, C's ROM doesn't do this, so if we try to send a 1Mb image, it just sits there and never goes.
I'm not sure if this is something set within the MMS.apk file or somewhere else.
Thanks!
!!
Wow great job Arctu! SO MUCH POTENTIAL HERE GUYS! Maybe change the background to different colors? change the font to different types of fonts? This way we would have a nice "stock" sms app. We wouln't need all these "ads" supported third sms apps! (chomp sms) lol

+1 on this. Some sort of customizable size would be ideal.
Possible bug - not checking file size at all!
I believe I found the reason why the Mms.apk in Cyanogen's mod is not resizing the images. I wish I had the programming knowledge to fix it, but I don't.
In packages/apps/Mms/src/com.android.mms.model/ImageModel.java
The class on line 125 checkContentResriction checks for image content type and image resolution but not image size.
Upon further investigation there is checkMessageSize(int messageSize, int increaseSize, ContentResolver resolver) in the CarrierContentRestriction class.
The code is there to handle the exception thrown by this function, but I do not know how to create the ContentResolver to add the lines to the check.
Maybe someone with more programming prowess than I can fix it so we can start sending MMS messages again.
[edit] Think I figured it out, compiling it all now. Anyone know how to just compile the Mms.apk and not the entire thing, kernal, apps, etc...? [/edit]
make Mms
Hope you succeed and share the code.
Did not work. I'll toy with it some more tonight and/or later this week. Hopefully I can figure this out. I am positive it has something to do with the fact that the checkFileSize is not included.
Is there a CAB to enlarge text for the HD2 for the visually impaired?
Googled, but could not find free CABs.
Thanks
Hi,
I know the following is a workaround and does not directly answer your question, but...
1/ Different fonts display at different sizes, for example Calibri is smaller than Segoe, you could try a larger one.
2/ You can increase the size of much of the text across your phone through settings.
3/ For applications which have font that you cannot resize, you may want to enable pinch to zoom (Zooomer or equivalent).
I'm using SPB Shell 3.5. Pinch to zoom does not seem to work in the HTC message. Have tried changing fonts but still too tiny for me to read, and font size have already been adjusted to the maximum size.
Thank you for your suggestions.
In dire straits, looking for a cab or app to help me read my messages and emails.
Thanks.
edit:- FaceBook and YouTube are fine, I'm able to pinch and zoom. But can't in messages and emails.

I too have ditched sense and gone back to Spb MS. The text in HTC Sense Sms is eye straining. It baffles me why it's so small on such a big screen. When I had the Touch Diamond a while back I was frustrated with the big text on such a small phone.
If you use SPB MS it should default to the native windows messaging app. If you increase the text in e-mail by clicking on menu -> -view -> text size -> , whatever size you choose should also reflect in the default sms app also.
rant: It amazes me that with all the million and one customizations on Xda no one has figured out/ or interested find a reg edit or something that would help increase the font in the HTC Sense sms app.
Back in the days before HTC released Sense there were a million and one ways to modify and change the fonts (enlarge/reduce) in all aspects of the windows OS.
It seems creativity has died with HTC Sense, it's all mods, mods and mods.
Sorry for my rant but do we need to create a bounty for anyone who can find a way to increase the font size in the HTC Sense app.
In WP7 Mango, is it possible to change the text size and icon size of notifications on the lock screen? Email, voicemail, texts, etc. show up as very small icons and small numbers below the date and time, too small for an old man like me.
I have a LG Quantum but I have seen other WP7 phones with small notifications so I am asking in general if anyone knows how to change it.
Even a response saying it can't be done [yet] would at least let me stop spending so much time searching for an answer for now...thx
Im pretty sure it cant be done

Hi old man,
I do not thonk it is impossible.
You need to search for "notification", "text" etc.. in the registry.

That was also my first thought. I can't find anything in the registry related to the font or text for notifications. Lots of keys about notification sounds, but that's it. I will continue searching because surely someone has done it. I took a sideroad and checked google images for mango lockscreens and - sadly - they all looked the same. I had hoped that someone had posted how they had modified their lockscreen, but no.
It is weird to me how MS uses these huge fonts that roll across the screen (e.g. people) but then makes notification text and icons in like a 2 pt font.
