[HOW-TO] Take me back to my 32A radio - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Did you flash Haykuro's radio to be able to run those great 32B roms on your 32A Magic? Do you want to be able to undo this and revert to your good old 32A radio?
How :
- Download and unzip this (md5 : 5C6DA74ECB33E8AF0116E06763B63467)
- Boot into spl and fastboot
- Type in the following:
Code:
fastboot flash hboot hboot.img
fastboot flash radio Radio_HTC_PVT_32A_3.22.20.17.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.0H.img
- POWER OFF (not reboot, power it off) THE DEVICE. (you can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
- Hold down the HOME button and power it on, you should boot into recovery mode.
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Flash your 32A rom/restore an 32A nandroid backup.

It works! Thank God! All the 32B roms were working like crap for me. Thanks much for all the hard work!

I had the same feeling ^^
I'll wait for the 32A kernel source to be released so I can add tethering etc. myself.

Yes. Very, very much so. I tried a few 32B ports and noticed alot of lag. I also noticed that you could flash Dream roms, but again, the lag and unresponsiveness (and home screen reboots) made it a hair-pulling experience.
My advice: don't bother.

Thank you!!

shouldnt the roms be working faster as they are designed for 32B (less ram), and 32A has 288mb....
so overall, shouldnt the device perform faster?

I "think" that you will only be able to use 100mb of your RAM.
To be confirmed by someone who did the "downgrade".

oh i didnt think of that
that does make sense unfortunately!
waiting for someone to confirm...

Thanks so much for this Amon_Ra. I had problems (understatement) with the other ROM's, Cyanogen's stable 32B port worked okay, but even that was pretty slow on my phone. I'm happy to be back running your 32A Rom.

Thanks Amon_RA. Your ROM is far faster than any of the 32B versions out there, even with Compcache and all the other stuff turned on.
Great work and looking forward to your next ROM version!

Here's a bit of a silly question, but is the hboot for this method modified, since its 2009 but allows Nandroid restores? Or was there a change in the recovery that allows it?

is this loss of ram reversed by switching back to the first radio?

Yes. Running my phone with my original Fatal1ty Hero port, and it's still fast as ever.

I'm just wondering, but what is the total amount of memory actually available to a 32A phone? Sorry if it's a stupid question, but I'm just paranoid over whether switching from radio to radio has diminishing effects over memory

on my 32A the actually available memory is:
MemTotal: 197144 kB
Physical memory is 288MB, memtotal gives you the ram available to linux kernel.
In this case, switching the radio rom implies switching the used kernel.
The kernel for 32B initializes the ram memory size which is available on those boards, which is 192MB total, hence the almost 100MB less memory available to running kernel and applications.

Okay, thanks! It seems like my phone has recovered all of it's memory

Thanks for the recovery radio Amon_RA

I cant wait for you to make tethering possible when they release the source
Hurrrrryyyy upppp
Why wont they release it already ?

Oh wow.. I didn't even realise people were flashing radio on their 32A's in the first place!

Three (Australia) Branded Phone 192 or 288MB Ram?

Hi,
I've tried searching for the answer, and have asked the seller (eBay alert!) to perform the Fastboot mode power up to verify if it's a 32A or 32B board but have not had any luck.
Does anyone know if the Three branded Magic has 288MB RAM please? I'm only interested in the 288MB version.
Thanks guys.
It has 288Mb Ram.
It will probably say:
32a ship s-on h hboot-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000) CPLD-12 RADIO-3.22.20.17.. at least that what the 3 HTC Magic's say last time I checked.
Thank you.
Are they able to be recovery and firmware modded?

Sure, I am pretty sure almost all the Android devices can be at some stage, but take a look around this section of the forum to see how many HC Magic roms there are already.
My HTC magic is from 3 Australia....and it has 288mb ram.....i have upgdraded the rom from the standard rom to the Rogers 1.3 version rom......without having to root the device or change the radio or SPL etc......but i haven't performed any recovery as yet as I am quite happy with the 1.3 rom.....I am not sure if we need to root the device or change spl to be able to do a recovery from a backed up .img file.

yes you do. i have rooted mine. having root allows so many extra things to be done. isnt the rogers rom rooted by default? simply by using it you are getting root i think?
3 magics are definitely the higher ram devices- 32A, same as TW and rogers.

Hey MontAlbert, just wondering if you know of any apps that can backup contacts that are saved as "phone" contact type as well as the "google" contact type. I have tried the mybackuppro but this only saves google contacts and not phone contacts. And i think the Hero rom can only save new contacts either on phone or sim and no more google option like the standard magic rom. Sorry to go off topic and hijack the thread by the way.....thanks

Rogers, heres your real root

hyeprofile requested i link to his rooting for dummies guide: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=4280573#post4280573
---
edit: almost forgot to include the gr33tz! D:
this hack brought to you by dream_kill, and myself.
---
edit: for those of you that don't know how to get to SPL 1.33.2005 i recommend reading here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532224 (under Rooting Rogers).
---
(note: this is for the dream, the method works for the magic you just need to flash a magic compatible recovery.img)
This requires that you use SPL 1.33.2005. (this is safe on all rogers dream devices.)
so if you don't have that already, go get it here.
once you are at SPL 1.33.2005 (AND ONLY THEN)
download this
(md5: 4a58a5702fdf899547011888d9cc066f .. sha1: 99e38e4f8798e952e67421a42e7b053ea70957b7)
extract both images wherever you'd like.
IMPORTANT: make sure you have the rom you'd like to install in the root of your sd card as update.zip (YOU WILL NOT HAVE A ROM INSTALLED AFTER YOU COMPLETE THE FOLLOWING STEPS, YOU WILL HAVE TO USE THE UPDATE.ZIP TO GET ONE)
boot into spl and fastboot (power off, hold camera button, power on, press the back arrow to get into "fastboot" mode)
type in the following:
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
POWER OFF (not reboot, power it off) THE DEVICE. (you can do this using the corresponding button [it says it on the screen] or just pull the battery [make sure everything is done flashing of course])
(if you don't boot into recovery or accidentally rebooted, just pull the battery [if you notice top left it should read "FASTBOOT" or "FASTBOOT USB" if it's plugged in] you're not bricked, you just need to access recovery, not standard boot ;P)
now hold down the HOME button and power it on, you should boot into recovery mode now, go ahead and ALT+S to flash your rom, and enjoy! now you can flash anything you see in the forums
EDIT:
So i noticed people were talking about reverting back (not sure why you'd want to )
Regardless, heres the original radio (3.22.20.17) and the original recovery (WARNING: UNROOTED) from rogers dream:
http://www.stevebirstok.com/android/losemyroot.zip
Code:
fastboot flash radio rogersradio.img
fastboot flash recovery rogersrecovery.img
fastboot erase system -w
and flash the update.zip found somewhere on this forum ;P
EDIT 2:
as far as this ram / memory loss goes:
C:\Users\haykuro\Desktop>sha1sum radiog1.img radioion.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radiog1.img
14163559b04ba8c9daead5e34465ebf5bafa7bd1 *radioion.img
radiog1.img is the radio.img i provide in the givemeroot.zip, radioion.img is straight off here there are no specific radios between 32A and 32B boards, so that isn't why you're losing memory. i'm trying to figure it out, so if anyones willing to do some testing and post results, please do so.
nice! a whole new crop of modders inbound
cheers
Trying this right away .. no words ... thanks again H !!
EDIT: well not RIGHT away ... need a rom lol

the radio is 2.22.19.26I (comes with all the new g1 roms, came with the ION, and with some other devices.) and it should have 0 effect on HSDPA or bands (that's at a hardware level and has to do with the crystals on your phone )

First of all, Haykuro, thank you for all your work (and those that helped you), this is excellent!
I have just completed all the necessary steps from H's first post. Worked like a breeze, I am up and running now. If only I knew we would get access to new ROMS this early, I would have started downloading them a few days ago.
Haven't had time to test everything yet, I randomly downloaded JackHeroV1.0, and it loaded no problem.
Good luck to all on Rogers, this should bring some new life to our phones now.
Great stuff indeed! Has anyone tried this on a 32a magic ?
Thanks for the awesome work haykuro and dream_kill. I can't wait to try this out tonight.
This is awesome, you guys rock! I can't wait until I get home to flash some cyongen-y goodness on my Dream
This is unbelievable haykuro.
Not only did you give us the ability to do custom ROMs ... they don't need to have special mods.
I always expected that every time a new ROM came out we would need someone to do some kernel hacks to make it Rogers compatible.
Great job.

New Rogers Root

Haven't seen this over here yet so thought i'd post it.
Seems The Rogers guys don't have to pick and choose any more for ROMs.
Heres the good news.
Clinton
I can confirm it works, but you need to use a 32B (Google) branded recovery, otherwise it gets all screwy.
Wow, that's fantastic news! Going to really open up what we can put on our phones.
just to clarify, haykuro has made it so we can flash 32B or 32A roms on a 32A magic?
Can we also flash Dream roms or would that be fubar due to the keyboard/radio?
Cheers,
Frank
Will this work on a 32A HTC Magic??
Just a note, in case people are wondering, 32A roms will no longer work with your phone after doing this.
So, it means after flash this radio, my 32A machine seems become 32B ?? I am update my original 32A rom, I think I need to reinstall rom after this... Thanks a lot...

I have a 32A Magic & am considering doing this. I thought you could use both 32A & 32B roms, but if not why would I want to do it? Does 32B have more/better ROMs?
The new radio doesn't have the boot offsets that are present in the original Rogers radio, and as a result the 32A roms don't work. The main benefit of doing this, is that the majority of roms released are for 32B Magics (which is what most people seem to be devving for) so as a result you don't need to wait for ports in order to enjoy the new roms. If you're perfectly comfortable with your current rom, or would rather just port the roms yourself, then you don't need to root.
skittleguy: So it becomes a 32B with 288MB of RAM? Also, do you happen to know how to backup the radio? I'd like to be able to restore to stock should the need arise . Thank you!

If I knew how to I would
And yeah, it essentially becomes a 32B with more memory, so all the optimizations that were made make the roms crazy fast.
The only thing stopping me now is the lack of a radio backup . I'd love to be able to switch it back to a 32A if possible.
Wow. Interesting. Thanks for taking the time to answer these questions skittleguy. And your Roger's ROMS repo thread is awesome!
One more thing, does this mean we can run the Dream ROMs as well (instead of the usual 32B ported ROMs)?

All that changes is the file in boot.img init.trout.rc gets renamed init.sapphire.rc and everything (wifi/bluetooth etc) works perfectly. i think the file is the hardware setup file and luckily the dream and magic are the same hardware, different case and keyboard

Ok it works now. Patience and repairing the ext filesystem seem to have done the trick.

Way of getting Hero’s Bluetooth audio working on Sapphire 32B device

There are three things need to be changed to make the bluetooth working on (MyTouch 3G, Magic or Saphire) 32B phone.
1- Radio should be changed from 32B type to 32A type.
2- Kernel should be changed to kenel 2.6.27 (the Kernel should support BT e.g. HoFo-12. Note that not all Kernels support BT). "This only for developers to change Kernel"
3- Recovery should be changed to recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img
There are three options avalibale to change the phone from 32B to 32A mode:
Option 1:
If the device is not yet rooted, First root the 32B device according to below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
Please follow above link and stop at Revert to 32B Radio and ROM i.e. do not go and apply this step and beyond.
Option2:
If the phone is already rooted and has 32B radio (radio 2.22.19.26I), execute below steps to change the radio to 32A radio (radio 3.22.20.17). Also flash the Recovery RAv-magic-v1.2.3H.
Put the phone is fastboot (hold back button and press end button)
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot erase system -w
fastboot erase boot
fastboot erase recovery (does not matter)
fastboot flash recovery recovery-RAv1.2.3H.img
1- Press MENU to power off! (do not reboot)
2- Hold HOME and POWER to boot into recovery mode
3- Apply 32A ROM.zip
Option 3:
Even if your phone was already rooted as 32B device with 32B Radio, above link will still work if followed to set the 32B device in 32A mode to accept 32A ROM’s with working Bluetooth.
Now the 32B device is ready to accept 32A ROM’s, choose one among 32A ROM’s in below links (These ROM's have already a working BT in their Kernel 2.6.26) :
1- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552274
2- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=534415
3- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=548837
4- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575501
Pleas follow the link associated with each ROM to update the device with chosen 32A ROM to flash desired 32A ROM in the phone.
Note that these three ROM’s are little bit slower because they are based on HTC Kernel 2.6.27.
I prefer two ROM's which are:
1- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=552274
2- http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=575501
This is because there is a way to optimize it by using the “Swapper” application available at Android Market.
The steps to optimize this ROM is to two partitions FAT32+SWAP or even FAT32+EXT2+SWAP in Sdcard. Easiest way to create the 3 partitions, is to use recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img at below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530492
Set the device in the Recovery Mode (Hold HOME and POWER to boot into recovery mode) to create the 3 partitions.
Then download Swapper application from Android Market to the phone. Start Swapper on the device and go to:
Configuration/ Settings/ Advanced preferences and check Use swap partition. Then set the swapper on. Finally close the Swapper.
Note using RA-magic-v1.2.3H.img enables only 32 MB swap while recommended is 128 MB swap. An alterantive is to use Paragon Partition Manager or any other avaliable methods to create the swap partition.
Note that whenver the phone get restarted the swapper has to set on again.
These ROM’s can also run in regular Home or Sense. Home is faster than Sense if someone does not like to use swapper. Please download and install “AdvancedLauncher” application from Android Market to help choosing the preferred Home, Sense or AdvancedLauncher. Note the device has to be restarted to choose the desired home.
Now the 32B device should be working on 32A ROM with Bluetooth sound.
Note that the 32B device will only accept 32A ROM’s now.
If Revert to 32B Mode is desired, please follow below link:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
Start at Revert to 32B Radio and ROM to revert the phone to 32B mode to accept 32B ROM’s again.
Enjoy your 32B phone with working Bluetooth.
Interesting. How safe is this? Changing device radios is usually where bricks happen and it makes me nervous.
I have changed my phone mode I. e. Radio many times as I mentioned without no issues at all. I always switch between 32A and 32B.
But how's the speed ?
Let's say this posts recommended MyHero 2.0.4 (with swap enabled) for 32A against other SenseUI ROM's for 32B (which it is actually/hardware wise is).
This is very interesting...
I want to see a proof of 32A Radio running on 32B before flashing..
Maybe this owuld fix BT for g1 too?
Would love to see Proof of this.
Oh, and for G1 users, they would have to fastboot the content of the sappimg..
i can vouch for this. when i first rooted my 32B MT3G i used this rooting method (before any other where discovered). I ran 32A Roms on my mytouch for a few days before switching to the 32B radio (since there where more options for 32B at the time)
Wasn't there a lot of discussion when the mt3g first got root, that you could stay on the 32A radio? I got mine the day they came out, and I think I remember that the original way we rooted left us with 32A radio. I seem to remember that the flash back to 32B radio was discussed as optional? Don't go on my memory though, I'm going to re-read those old threads.

yeah flashing back to 32B was optional. But 32A roms didnt run great since their kernel was optimized to run with more RAM.

Yep, I went back and re-read the original thread that Amon-RA posted, and I also ran 32A for a few days, because I had to decide if it was worth the risk to flash the radio again if I didn't have to.

Oke but now , how do we get 32a working? anyone
read read read read....

what is swapiness? and a few other questionss

so i was looking at the eclair rom thread at people's comments and i noticed that they were talking about how this swapiness thing made the rom faster. So what is swapiness and how can i set it?
I have a mytouch 32B with 1.33.2005 spl with 26I ending radio img. Amon Ra's 1.5.2 recovery image.
Oh and when i first rooted my mytouch i used the oneclick method and i realized that even with my earlier perfect spl 1.33.006 that i could flash roms. Later i decided to do the hard thing by making a goldcard to get rid of the perfect spl and i flashed the 1.33.2005 one. So what i want to know is what are the pros and cons of getting rid of my perfect spl. Did i waste all the time for nothing? and is my phone vulnerable to things that could affect my phone? and is it possible to revert to the "perfect" spl?
oh and people use these codename sort of things like Danger Spl and Hardspl and Haykuro Spl <<what are they?
sorry for all the noobish questions but i just wanted to know. thanks!

Swappiness is basically more (and much slower) ram, and by tht I mean it uses part of your sdcard to hold some stuff when memory gets to full. The swappiness can be compared to how often it is used, 100 swappiness will use the swap partition 100% of the time and 50 swappiness will use the partition half of the time.
The Haykuro spl (Also known as the death and danger spl) is the spl from the sapphire which haykuro hex-edited to work on the dream to allow for larger roms (at the time it was hero roms), and shouldn't be needed on the mt3g, nut I would ask someon tht actually has one to make sure.

As for your perfect spl. AFAIK the only difference between regular spl and perfect spl is that you are unable to flash roms on it. This is just a pain, no downside to changing it
