What happens to HTC when Windows 7 is out ? - General Topics

I am just wondering what will be happen to HTC when windows mobile 7 is out ? Right now, we have the great Manila, which is in my opinion much more important for my daily use than the underlaying mobile OS. So I don´t care about windows mobile 6.1 or 6.5 it is not important for me, I need just ANY windows to use all my windows mobile tools. But everey new version of manila is the great new development at the moment: New tools, new usage, new design ! I could say for years with 6.1 when htc would update manila fast and steady. I have no problem to have nearly all tools twice, one from windows mobile and one from htc, for example calculator, contacts, calendar...
But what happens when v7 will arrive and Microsoft did everything new and hopefully better ?
First: If the ned design and UI is really great, we don´t need manila anymore. I don´t belive this but maybe it will happen and there is a problem for htc, because nobody wants manila and they are back thrown to just a hardware manufacture.
Second: Windows 7 UI is not so good. In this case we need manila, but we are still in the same situation than today: Everything is double on the device, one time from MS and one time from htc, which is not the best solution in terms of hardware resources, speed and funcionality compared to other mobile phones.
What do you think about this future ?
hans

Okay....
Just so I understand this clearly, your primary worry is regarding Manila's compatibility with Windows Mobile 7.
First: Yes, it's true that if the new Windows Mobile 7 is great, then Manila will be less needed, but I find that doubtful. Unless Microsoft copies Manila directly, then there will still be those who needs HTC's unique interface for whatever reason.
Also, I'm not sure if you realize this, but developing Manila actually cost HTC money. Companies often develop an interface for WinMo (Manila, Touchwiz, etc) because it is to hide the ugly original interface and to improve productivity. If they no longer have to do this, it would actually save them money. Hardware is, in fact, HTC's primary method of making money (after all, they don't sell Manila; it comes free).
Second: Yes, if WinMo 7's interface is not good, then more resources will be needed for the OS and the secondary interface, but the performance drop may not be as great as you think. One of the things about Windows Mobile 7 is that it is supposed to better utilize modern hardware, which will make it far more efficient. The increased resources needed will probably be more than offset by WM7's increased efficiency.
Secondly, if, for some strange reason, the combination of WinMo 7 and Manila ends up being too resource heavy, I really don't see this being a huge issue as hardware will inevitably be improved to handle any extra needed resources. Or XDA will end up taking care of any slack HTC has (and if the past few years have been any indication, there will be plenty of slack on HTC's side).
After all, one must remember that the WM6.1 stock ROM with HTC Manila is not exactly the fastest thing in the world.

Perhaps this is a little too much optimism, but I don't think we need to worry about WM7's interface. MS have been making a lot of great interfaces lately -- Win7, the Xbox 360, and the Zune all have extremely nice interfaces. WM7 is a big deal to MS, and I'm sure they're giving a lot of resources to developing a good UI. WM6.5 may seem like a disappointment, but all indications seem to be that 6.5 was purely a low-priority patch job.
As has been said, HTC will probably be BETTER off if they DON'T have to reskin the OS. Maybe instead they can spend those development resources on useful add-on tools instead of basic functionality.
And if the core WM7 UI is lame and HTC DOES feel the need to step up, I bet it'll be possible. MS knows that customization is practically the one thing they really still have over the competition, and I doubt they'll squash that.

What makes me optimistic is also that WinMo 6.5's titanium does not look so bad to me, as well as the new locking system...
Even if it does not provide as many functionnalities as a good old manila, it's still some improvement over the classic naked WinMo look and feel. What do you think ?

WM6.5 = Worst UI

I have an old Trinity, and tried WM6.5 ROMs. Twice.
WM6.5 seems a bit faster for me, than 6.1. It is also stable.
But, it has, IMO, the WORST user interface of any OS out there!
It's cluttered. It's busy. It's hard to navigate.
The file screen is pure visual mess: something a grade student with bad taste would create, and think it's "cool."
And of course, below it all, it's still the old, old WM.
I love HTC hardware. But with WM7 beyond the horizon, I am taking a hard look at other options. Maybe the new iPhone coming out in June, maybe HTC Android, if they polish up a bit.
Has MS completely lost it? Or do people actually like WM6.5?
Umm, whats wrong with the interface? i love it, its easy to navigate, I really dont know what ur complaining about. Im using it on my tilt and it works great!
Same here, I'm using it on my kaiser, and in addition to being much more responsive, the UI is a big improvement over previous versions. Titanium is finger friendly, and nice looking too. The large start menu is nice and finger friendly, as well as more convenient than navigating through endless menus just to open a program. And speaking of menus, the finger friendly menus are really nice; I barely have to use my stylus anymore.
The only thing I don't really like about the UI is the start menu's meager level of customization, but I'm sure someone here will come up with a tool to fix that. If you want the old WM interface back, you can always just install an old WM theme, and everything but the start menu will go back to Windows 3.1 style.
Dave
If u think WM 6.5 has the worst UI then u haven't used WM 5 or below.
Agree with original poster, in fact i've listed my polaris on eBay and am just buying a nokia - and I've been using HTC's (about 6 of them) since the original xda.
Given up on MS.
it's the the best but it is one of the simplest UI to navigate. also, with WM6.5, i dont have to install 3rd party apps for sms (because of the big and scrollable UI), contacts (same as sms), and with all the titanium plugins being developed, no more favorite contacts launcher, pograms launcher, weather forecast, twitter, etc. but then again it's not the best UI
Havent tested personally, but from a graphical/friendly point of view I´m not rushing for testing...Not like it at all
Just my opinion,
Im quite a fan of the new interface
I find it incredibly easy to navigate around it.
The only thing i dont like about it is how you return to the desktop after using an app, i would prefer it to return to the start menu where it was last.
It's their first attempt for a finger-friendly UI. It's still ugly (compared to iPhone), and seems a bit too serious, that's why nobody uses the Windows Today screen and everybody installs custom roms or "today screen" alternatives like SPB mobile shell 3 and other similar products.
6.5 is a bit more operable when using it with your hands, but you still need the stylus or a nail for some operations. That's because WinMob started as a PDA OS and now that it's a Phone/pda OS they should redesign it from scratch.
Well, instead of making all UI parts big for a finger touch, Microsoft said that 6.5 will only be available on devices that have a dedicated button for "Start menu".
And I still don't like the honeycomb. (And I'm not gonna buy an iPhone because I like their UI )
For some reason I think this not-so-long development improved WM UI a lot more than HTC with all those touch flos...
meh...its not the best, but its not the wost..lol
meh...its not the best, but its not the wost..lol
Actually VanAuberjim, they changed the upgrade to 6.5 requirements a month or two ago. Requiring a hardware start menu was a stupid idea, and I think they caught on to their mistake. Now, a minimum of a 400MHz processor and 128MB of RAM are the only things one needs to be eligible for an official upgrade. Unfortunately, it's still at the manufacturer's discretion, so older devices won't get an official upgrade. Of course, that's why cooked ROMs were invented .
Dave
I agree too.
They messed up Windows Mobile 6.5 completly.
The improvements are not enough, I expected a lot more from the "new" windows mobile.
In my oppinion it doesn't deserve the adjectiv "new" because it isn't. They made the buttons bigger (like we have a long time with finger menu), the scrolling better (there was no possibiliy to make it worse then it was) , a new start menu (which is nearly like the one from TF3D 2) and new lock screen (which is pretty good).
Wooow.
And the rest?
The UI is still like from a nother, old time,, but the UI of iPhone, Android and Palm, yeah, they look new and fresh.
The Windows Mobile 6.5 UI still looks like Windows 95.
And why we still have to use the stylus on Windows Mobile 6.5.
Hellloooo M$ welcome to the non stylus finger friendly century!!!
That's why I'm selling my Xperia right now to buy the new iphone in this summer. Just beause of the interface.
I hate apple and I would love to keep my Xperia. But not this way.
If M$ isn't able to create a nice new Windows Mobile, they will lose in the next years, the won't have a chance against Android and iphone when this OS will have things like Office which is one of the main arguments for a Windows Mobile device.
i agree with the OP and a lot of posts here, 6.5 is just not enough and im sick of the mediocre updates to winmo and they keep pushing back wm7 that i think it might not even stack up as well with the competition when it hits due to the fact that the give us real updates and it may not be up to par by the time it releases...... Im moving on come september or sooner when my contract is up and get me an iPhone 3rd Gen or a Palm Pre
at least they know how to bring the big updates to their OS (Palm gave us the Upgrade that M$ should have done and in a BIG WAY)
and apple (even though they are air tight) at least gave us copy-paste/mms and a lot of things that they were behind on so all iPhone haters can look for something else to complain about now
I like the new interface, and now more compared to the overloaded TF3D 2, I must say that WM6.5 is not the best thing out there in matter of usability and design, but it represents a big improvement over the older version, I just love the scrolling, and the new menus. I would like to see improvements on tasks switching and the control on the icons on the topbar, but I think that at this stage that's not gonna happen.
The real promise is Windows7 but they're taking tooooooooo long. I think the most interesting OS out there is the OS of the Palm Pre. Apple? well, I just realize that I don't want a phone with virtual keyb, I can't type without seeing the screen.
I have recently installed the WM6.5 ROM on my Diamond and I really like the responsivness of the new OS, especially with the new HTC Album, Camera, etc. So the underlying code must have been greatly enhanced.
When it comes to the visual of the home screen, I think I still prefer the HTC TouchFLO 3D. So together, they are a winner
I too agree with the original poster here. It is really terrible in my opinion. In fact, after installing it and using it for a few days, I came to the conclusion that microsoft is incapable of delivering any credible handheld OS for the foreseeable future at least, and have already switched to iPhone. I'm really very very happy with iPhone. WIth it jailbroken, I can multitask, cut and paste, do video recording, do bluetooth file transfer, do MMS, and many other things which everyone says iPhone can't do. Not only that, I find that other than GPS navigation software, which is still terrible on iPhone, the third party applications on iPHone are a lot better. Everything is so well thought out in iPhone, although it has just one button. Easy to switch tasks, VOIP and phone calls are of much better quality, volume control that could be adjusted in small increment, so much room for customization and tailoring (when so many incorrectly says that you can't customise iPhone).
I now use my HD to run my Tom Tom, iGO, Garmin and Mapking only. Once similar application exist on iPhone, I'd be 100% done with winmo.
WORST++
Definitely one of the most pathetic attempts of MS. Sucks big time, what on earth were they thinking?
For instance, if i've scrolled the menu down somewhere and the clock/date is not in the screen....and i leave it there and come back to my today screen....boom! i got to scroll back just to see the damn date!
A today screen is to give a quick glance on all the important stuff. This is plain ridiculous....all you get to see is some boring menus in font size 32.
boo MS....booooo!
I'm not going to tell anybody what they should think, but I think a lot of negative opinions in this thread are because people are misunderstanding what 6.5 actually IS.
It's a patch job. It's a little facelift to buy time for WM7, which is an actual overhaul. Based on comments that have dribbled out from the WM team, I don't think WM7 really has been "pushed back." Instead, WM8 was pushed FORWARD and rebranded as WM7. The "original" WM7 was drastically reduced and rebranded as 6.5.
IMO, 6.5 is MOSTLY an improvement over 6.1. The menus and scrolling are definitely better. There's a handful of little tweaks and changes that are definite improvements. CHome is a bit flashier and more "current" than a bare Today screen (and, remember, you can easily disable it and use the "classic" Today screen if you want).
The only part I'm not very fond of is the Start menu. The design is questionable, and it's too darn clunky to rearrange. They really should have made a fullscreen "smart" menu that works more like the Vista / W7 Start menu.
Also, the new version of IE is absolutely useless. Slow, clunky, and lousy page rendering. Older versions of PIE were lousy for the "real" web but great for mobile sites. The new IE is good for neither. Luckily, that can also be reverted.

What is The Big Deal with WM6.5 ?

I have recently seen alot of ROMS for WM6.5 and they all look the same from the screenshots.... ugly!
I mean what is with all the HUGE text listed down the screen, am I the only one who thinks this is a stupid setup? What happened to the Start Menu and clean today setup?
Are people just updating to WM6.5 just 'cos its 6.5, or do you actually like the look of it? Please give your opinions on WM6.5, and more importantly what is the difference between WM6?
I am using WM6.1 on 2 of my devices as I like the Today Screen feel and the way everything is set out. I am contemplating putting 6.5 on a device just to test it out, is it really worth it? is it customizable to make the home screen not just BIG words down the screen? maybe a clock even lol.
thanks everyone for your opinions.
i think it looks great.
As long as you have good apps installed to cover nasty WM UI no matter if you have 6.1 or 6.5
I personally do not like the honeycomb, but I do like that the hole UI is more finger friendly
Let´s see the WM7!! hope they really impress us
I like it because its 6.5 that .4 of more awesome 1337ness!!!! lol.. I actually just like the better slightly larger menu buttons. the new start menu is neither here nor there for me.. I don't like titanium, it has potential, but till you can have more than one link on click per panel it is pretty lame to me.. seems to take more effort to get to my necessary apps with it than without it.. I have been using wad2 on my last few flashes. My device is i910 Omnia, with the BlazingWolf 7.1 rom.
On my observation, the main advantages of WM6.5 over WM6.1 are:
RAM Managemenet: In WM6.5 I never need to run the apps to clear RAM. Any time I quit a program, the RAM will be released imediately.
Power Consumption Controll: The battery life is noticably enlonged copare using WM6.1, on same load.
Connectivity: One example is on WM6.1 any time I'm using Internet Sharing I need to manually switch phone band to WCDMA to ensure stable fast data connection. And if I forget to switch it back to GSM or Auto after finished the Internet Sharing, phone calls on 3G mode will drain the battery very fast. But on WM6.5, I noticed that I don't need to switch phone band again, just leave it as Auto. The OS is so smart that it knows what time to switch to what band. Example, when I use internet sharing, it will stay at 3G for most of the time. When I make or receive a phone call, it will switch to GSM immediately after the phone connected.
Finger Touch Experience For this I don't explain more, it's just much more comfortable on finger/stylus responds.
Third Party Apps Interface: Well I'm not a developer, but from the changes on some registry structure, I can definitely tell that WM65 will be more friendly to third party application developers.
These are very core elements of a mobile os. The progress of wm65 on these points is obviously noticable.
But because the change of the core. It causes a big problem on legacy apps compatibility. People find that a lot of apps running well on wm6 just can never run on wm65.
But I think currently both Microsoft and third party software vendors are working tight on this issue. At least for most part of popular softwares, we can find a wm65 compatible version now. But for some speciall software, we can not find it if the developer did not upgrade it.
For sure, there are certain advantages of using 6.5 over 6.1. (The advantage is not only 'skin' things that you can see it, more important is on the 'core'.)
Hence your choice just depend on what softwares you're using. If for all your 'must-have' softwares you can find a WM6.5 compatible version or its replacement, why not use WM6.5.
Edit: I don't like the Titanium & the headache to customize it either. I just disabled it & leave an 'empty today', but with HButton, I can reach all frequently used apps within one single touch.
The RAM used by Titanium is 3.5MB+, compares to HTC Home @1.5MB+, & M2D @ 7MB+.
I like the looking of Honeucomb,(for showup only), but I also use QuickMenu, which is more functional.
Must to say that above experience are from the single ROM I've used only, maybe there are performance variaties on different ROMs & devices.
And at last, one of my most favarite part is the new PIE, it definitely can display whatever a desktop ie does except only one tab allowed.
I like 6.5. I find it runs pretty well on the kaiser, and I prefer its look to the old Windows 3.x interface found in the older versions. Plus, the finger scrolling is superb. And if you don't like the honeycomb, there are other start menu layouts, one example here. WM6.5 is just a band-aid to hold us over until WM7, but it's still a step in the right direction for Microsoft.
Dave
Yes, I think i will be waiting for wm7, but i just can't help myself any longer and I am going to take the plunge to wm6.5 on my Elfin or Wizard just to give it a go, I think it should run well on the elin with the RAM it has and without really checking out the custmizations, my assumptions is basically on the interface on standard screenshots i have seen.
thanks for the input guys, only a flash will i be able to add further opinions, as i am a heaver modder, and would need this to offer proper insight into the OS.
I've bounced back and forth between a couple 6.1 and 6.5 ROMs. I use TouchFLo because I hate 6.1's today screen and Titanium is pretty bland. I think that the current touchflo manila 2.1 is about the best you can get for WM6.1 currently, but I don't think manila 2.1 is streamlined for WM6.5. I feel like I'm taking a step back in integration and fluidness when I use Touchflo 2.1 and WM6.5. Not much, but it just seems off. This leads me to think that the new manila 2.5 is HTC's update to bring that integration and fluidness to WM6.5. The specualtion is that manila 2.5 is going to be for the new Firestone. While that is probably true, HTC has also mentioned that the new Topaz and Rhodium will get WM 6.5 upgrades. I would like to assume that this upgrade will also include manila 2.5 because if I feel that WM6.5 and TouchFlo 2.1 is lacking a complete feel then I would take that HTC has also noticed this. Yeah, I'm rambling I know. Just my thoughts. Bottom line on WM6.5 is that it seems like Microsoft just made a piss poor attempt at skinning there relic OS. That just pertains to the aesthetics though. I know there were unseen changes that do have their benefits.
(Sorry for all the "I feel and I would assumes", just ponderings)

Help android or winmo?????????????

uys help me out here im stuck between a Touch Pro or Magic I dont know im really tempted with the Magic but I have zero experience with Android, With winmo its like I know it straight out the box as i have just got rid of my TyTn II and flashed hundreds of different roms, i know roms are flashable on Android but is that as easy as it is on winmo? Help me out. It has to either be the touch pro or Magic no others cant afford anything better ????
Well Thank you in advance. Please Help me sort this out guys.....
Matter of prefernce and convenience really, suggest you try both and decide...both have their pro's and cons...not necessarily affecting everyone...
WM - lack of growth - been stuck with 6.5 and 6.5.x and will probably be there for another decade - till microsoft decides to give out Wm7, software compatibility and availability is good and convneient to install, and play around and reconfigure. most important for me - outlook integration...and Tomtom - cannot live without them
Android - only reason why i dont move over is the lack of GPS software and outlook integration - yea I know - there are many workarounds - but then I am not looking for them - i want a seamless integration like activesync - when that comes - I move. GPS I can overlook but am waiting for voice support on GMaps for UK - then will consider.
i suggest you pick up the phone, use it for a day/two - if you dont like - return and pick up Touchpro2 - I have been using TP2 and HD2 for ages now and dont feel the need to move on - unless something substantial comes my way - not even iphone is appealing - sorry - I dont like being tied up with chains. I like to let my phone 'evolve'
Happy hunting...
As stated above, is matter of preferences.
From my point of view I see WM as a solid business oriented OS with thousands of great apps (found here of course). and with the upcoming WP7 WM will expand even more.
Android I see it more like very young fun/multimedia OS.
So it will depend on what you want from a device
Let us know what you finally got
I really like my Touch Pro and will be getting an HD2 soon. I would say that is really depends on what you want in your phone. The big difference IMHO is that the Marketplace for Android is about 100x better…good luck.
Cool Thanks
Well you said try both so time to buy Android then =D If i dont like it then ill have to wait until i can get a new one NO MONEY =D im buying from a guy on here I hope =D depending on if my Kaiser actually gets paid for =/ well thansk guys, and i agree the iPhone is a fail if someone came up to me and said here have this for free id say fine butI wouldnt pay for one tbh I hate Apple all toghether the Macs always crash (That is definately not off subject in anyway =D) Well thanks for your help guys oh one more thing anyone know how easy it is to flash roms on Android I know its possible, is it the same as winmo?

I don't know that many GPS software. But on my WinMo I had Sygic Mobile Maps. Which is cross platform. Works on WinMo, Android & Symbian. I just copied everything directly over from my WinMo SD to my Android SD. 'Acquired' an APK file. And it worked perfectly and just as good as on my WinMo.
Actually, even better. On my WinMo starting it up could easily take 30 seconds. On my Android it's done in less than 5 seconds.
Wm all the way but i think Wm will not be as popular as the years go don't think Microsoft has the heart for it

Yes, Sygic is one of the GPS navigation software that runs fine on Android (tested on my HTC Desire).
In addition, there are the free Google Maps with voice navigation for selected countries (Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Switzerland, USA and UK).
Add to that:
* Navigon for Android
* nDrive for Android
* iGO for Android
* Copilot for Android
Is this enough for you?
Android and Windows Mobile which do you like better?
Magic is capacitive touch, but resolution only has 480*320.
Pro's resolution is 640*480.Pro display effect is better than magic. The same price£¬Acer A1 and i8000 are great too.
Android or Windows Mobile
Both of them are very good, it depends what you want from a device...if you are in Uk I would go for Htc Hero with 3Uk ...3G signal 24/7 the device is very nice, powerful and fast , fantastic media experience better then Desire and Magic. If you are a business person go for the HTC HD2 or the Touch Pro 2. They do the job. Android still my last choice anyway.. personally speaking........but you know?! the choice is yours.
Here something will help you to know members opinions on both OS´s

[Q] Downgrading to WM6.5

It's just crossing my mind this idea to downgrade from WP7 to WM6.x. Yes, it has been told that this two platforms are completely different thing, on hardware and software base. But, after looking at the HD2 forum that is dedicated to HD2s update from WM6.5 to WP7 the idea just could be right.
Switching from WM6.5 to WP7 made me nostalgic for WM6.5 and it's programs, settings... Well, I guess that, as a lot of people, I haven't asked around about WP7 enough to see how it works and what it gives. But, I do like this phone, and especially 1GHz processor, 5MP camera, touch screen and other things (o yeah the battery is much better) that it comes hard to me to have this mighty thing that is all locked up. It could be that in a year or so, from now, it will be better than WM6.5 but considering all that time needed to get it close to WM6.5 and original idea to create WP7 (to make it easy-to-use and lot less custom) it stands on this OS just like gray cloud.
Just wanted to write this, and if someone shares my opinion I would be most glad to hear about it.
Maybe it will be possible to get to WM6.5...
nope cant be done sorry. just install the mango beta it blows wm6.5 out of the water.
Yes, I do try to think like that, and then I realize that I need SatNav. And, no GPS navigation software can't be installed, for time being, there is no Garmin, IGo, TomTom...
I'll definitely stick to this phone, and Mango I'll update. Hope it'll make my life simpler.

Garmin StreetPilot is now in Marketplace for a hefty $39.99, but unfortunately still does not include fully installed maps. Maps can however be downloaded ahead of time to the phone for the relevant route.
for unlocked device you have Navigon select...
My Arrive came with TeleNav. And the built in Bing stuff does turn by turn (with an upgrade coming in Mango). I don't see GPS apps as being an issue.
Yeap, now the future looks better.
as longer I use WP7 the more I wish a downgrade to WM6.5!!!
Where is my (momentary VERY needed) possibility to use tethering!? How do I synch "get away ALL your music and videos, blahblah..." all my things WITHOUT the scrapy Zune-SW, and (haha!) how I can increase the memory for it!?
****ty menues (just 5 stupid icons -what I there are several, much more options!?!?), it's not possible for the developers to install a dedicated database (so you have to make it "in the cloud") -yeah!!!! It's SO stupid on a MOBILE phone, as there often is the possibility that you're NOT online, or with GPRS or EDGE only -and it is SO funny if you're in a train and all 5 secondy it switsh from G to E to G3 to G to HSDPA. The last ****! :-(
The IE on it often don't work. Hmmm -let's use Opera. Uuuh -damned -I forget: you can't install ANYTHING!!!
OK -exceptional jailbreak, but I never did it before, and I don't want it -but I HAVE to do it, if I want to USE my phone.
I think it's better to reactivate my HD2 -there is ALL functionable, without any problems. And: it contains much data that i need -and there is NO possibilty to migrate SMS (i.e.) to WP7 -VERY poor performance Microsoft!!!!

I think it's better to reactivate my HD2 -there is ALL functionable, without any problems. And: it contains much data that i need -and there is NO possibilty to migrate SMS (i.e.) to WP7 -VERY poor performance Microsoft!!!!

wow where to start. this is probably the most ignorant post I've read on here thus far and with poor grammar at that. my arrive has had wonderful performance since the day I got it and it has improved even further since I installed the mango beta. the live tiles are awesome makes android and iOS seem like nothing but app launchers, the whole concept of apps is overrated and I can do a lot of things without having to even launch an app. and IE9 runs circes around opera. especially the one on WM.

Hmmm... It's not the performance that is question. But, it's functionality. Migrating from WM6.5 to WP7 should, at least I thought, have been compatible, eg. SMS, Connection settings (WiFi, Phone...), Contact (I've had to do it the old fashion way, by typing contacts manual / an then I found out about sync with WLive ).
It feels like I have powerful thing (excellent hardware), but it does non better than Nokia 3310. Just raw speed, for basic things.
Hi eric -I'm not a native speaker (english) -but give us some probes from your netherlands, german and french
But as I can see, you're able to read what I wrote, and thats what matter.
But back to topic: What sense is in a phone that is unusable in much functions DIRECTLY. For everyone -not just for people which have the time, the skills und of course the desire to make an jailbreak (which causes lost of guarantee), rebuild the phone several times, have so read several manuals, howtos and search for betas, previews.
I'd tried the Desire Z (just because of the same why I buy the 7 Pro -it's a type & touch) -and send it bach 2 days later to amazon. It's exactly what you wrote: just app-launchers! I hate apple., because of their "we tell you what to do" -and with WP7 it cames to me. I don't wanna do a jailbreak -but I didn't have an alternative (if I want to USE the phone) :-(
Maybee other people have the possibility and time to try the mango beta -and it seems that I MUST do it, or I have to sell the phone (what will make me very sad -a VERY good piece of hardware!!)

odd,i didn't have to do any of that when I got my Arrive. just open the box, enter my live ID and I was good to go. wp7 is not an app launcher as almost everything can be done without even having to go into an app. with the mango beta which is easy to install i can identify a song that's playing, a product for the best price, get directions somewhere (even in malls),find something to do in the area, buy movie tickets, search the web and watch html5 videos in HD quality, check my Facebook, chat on Facebook and check in. and many other things. install the mango beta and u'll feel much better about it.
Hold on. The core of any smartphone are applications. Staring with earliest versions of WM, Symbian, iOS, Android, Droid, WP7, they all the same with a final porpoise, and that is an application/s.
Therefore calling other systems "apps launcher" is contradiction. Because doing anything with a WP7 is being done via apps. Home screen is, just as in any other mobile system, a pile of shortcuts with a weather and the clock. The truth is that some systems are doing it, app launching, better than the others.
Correct me if I'm wrong.
With all of its hardware, as WP7 requires to run, this phone, or any WP7, will in the future be something good.
If you've played with WP7 enough, you'll find that the live tiles really preclude you from needing to actually launch the associated apps unnecessarily. Because of this, the commenter was calling the other Mobile OS versions more of an "app launcher" because, in general, you need to launch the app to interact with it. (Google has widgets, but those widgets aren't quite the same.) With WP7, you can glance-and-go (one of the tenants that MS imparted into the Metro design) and only launch apps when there is a required interaction. It really is a different approach, and one that I think works very well.
Please give some comparison for WP7 and other mobile OS (mOS).
As hard as I try, and I do like to play around with WP7, I just can't find anything that makes WP7 better than other mOS.
Eg. When email or SMS arrive, on WP7s homescreen shows a count of these items, and on the other hand, Symbian do just the same. So, where is the difference?
So far, the only thing that is obviously better are things-apps that have something to do with the internet (Windows Live, Email, Internet Explorer, Youtube) or with the 1GHz processor (apps do work better with stronger processor, so by having stronger processor apps work better and it isn't because of WP7).
you sound like you're determined to be underwhelmed by wp7. yes, when you get an SMS, the homescreen tells you that you have one....that's what phones do. What more is there for a phone to do with an sms?
WP7 is highly innovative from a UI standpoint. What you seem to be interested in, however, is the menu-heavy micromanaging style of old school winmo. If you want to be able to micromanage every last little thing about your phone go to a different platform. WP7 does everything it is purported to do, if you are not getting what you wanted, then you didn't do your homework before you dropped god-knows-how-much on a phone. these days, it's not about which platform is better, it's about preference. It's getting to the point where every platform can do all the really important things really well. so how do you want your phone to look? that's what you're buying.
Don't get me wrong, but what you are saying is what I've been saying. That is, WP7 as any other mOS is not new in functionality but it is different in GUI. Other qualities are not available to be seen, since there are no apps which can show it.
For now, WP7, only offers basic features.
I have been wondering the same thing since the 1 st rumors of windows phone 7 but still a no go. Its ironic ms stripped away so many of the things that made wm only to get beat out by the former clone of themselves....android. I love the form the tp2 & wish they wouldve released an hd2 with a keyboard. They shouldve stripped the name windows, hired a special team that managed themes system wide so that u have eye candy without it being resource heavy & hired a marketing team that would make apple & google have nightmares.

that's what they are doing with the mango update that's near release and the beta is already out and I find that im able to do just as much if not more than WM6.5 and android (former TP2 owner and loved it, had an EVO **** for a week and hated it).
Hi,
I followed eric12341's suggestion and have the mango-beta installed (and have buyed a developer account, to make side-loads possible). And some things were better (slow was it not before -hey, it have a 1GHz CPU, it HAVE to be fast ), but there are so many things which waste time. If I want to have a (exact) look of charging, I have to go through some menue-points. As I often in transit by railways, I have to set date several times, and the WM-calendar (and to set the time) is MUCH more effective, as I didnt't have to use the annoying slider-gadgets. Maybe it looks nice, but it waste much time. Before it was just 3 tips, no it's an orgy -the possebility to change the style would be great! And local database for apps -to find the connecting-train while you have no network (and EVERY thing have to be found over network when you want to set start and target of you travel, because of the impossebillity of local databases) is a horror! Before: 10 seconds, now 3 minutes -or longer, as often there is no network in the train. :-(
And unfortunately many very good (sideload)-apps will not longer work after mango. And when I can make a backup from my data, if I want to upgrade memory, or have to change it (because of defectivs, i.e.). And not all of my friend have Zune installed, but they have good music, pdf's or anything else for me. The next thing I was wondering: why I can only set my own ringtons for calling? What'a about SMS, email, and so on?? ^^
Sorry for the bad english -hope it was not to hard to read. :-(
Groby, thanks for the info. I was looking for some info about Mango.
Navigating via online updating is absolutely annoying. It takes for ever to download map, and there are no detailed maps, but only hi-ways and few byways.
I looks like this operating system is way out from it's time, for about good year or so.
If developers could make downgrade to WM 6.x, it would make this phone a dream.

[Q] mango questions

Hi, hope this is right place to ask few questions.
I never wanted wp7 device because of limitations, too bad that my little brother didn't know that and few days back, he gave me birthday present - Omnia 7
It's not as bad as I thought so, but there is some things I can't live with and now I'm not sure what to do, I mean wait for mango, or sell it while it's brand new
Internet explorer - I'm an opera user and I always loved opera mini on my wm and Symbian devices because of compression and speed on 3g, IE7 is soooo slow compared to my old Samsung i600 with OM, it takes ages to load some sites, eats too much data and drains battery - does IE9 compress data or it still loads full pages like IE7?
Picture hub - It's useless for me, I don't use Facebook or any MS services - does it finally works with other picture hosting services like picasa, photobucket, flickr...?
Onscreen keyboard - WTH means that space around it??? Even on 4" screen is too small, is there any improvement?
USB mass storage - yes or no? I don't have windows machine at home and I don't have any media on windows machine in office, Zune is not my cup of tea...I know that there is registry hack, but it would be cool
Main menu - its one big mess, is there some kind of categorization in mango? Sometimes is hard to find shortcuts
Bing - yeah, it works in US, but here in Slovakia it sux compared to google, is there a way to remap dedicated button?
Multitasking - Is there a full multitasking like in Android or Symbian?
After few days of using this crap I feel like in jail, I can't save files from web, I can only use only services connected to MS, I can't connect device to any machine but MS, I can't this, I can't that...i think that guys from Redmond had their heads deep in the ass when they was working on WP, I'm sick about it.
Well the multitasking is sorted and IE 9 is much better than IE7 but still no Opera.
So my advice is if you really can't deal with the lack of features and cannot wait for fixes sell it now.
The other things haven't been sorted yet - I'm not sure about picture hub though as I don't use it.
Thanks, I found even more limitations last few days that's bugging me and makes device useless for me. No reason to wait for mango, device is for sale.
mango 7.10 (7712)
I've installed mango 7712, Windows Phone Device Manager and
MangoB2 ZuneClient. But WPDM asks me to unlock my HTC HD7.
What should I do? Help!
(I hope soon be able to install Android)
thank you very much
Android would solve all my problems...
You really should give WP7 a chance It's smooth, and a great difference between android and WP7 is that WP7 has got hardware acceleration and android doesn't. That does make it a fast phone
It has downsides, like every phone. It lacks multitasking, in mango there will be partial multitasking.
Bing... yeah that's a problem, even here in in The Netherlands, gotta agree on that.
I don't know if you like to game on your phone, but WP7 is great for that, mostly becouse of the xbox live games
I'd say, make some comparisations to android, there are allot of topics on that! And then, make your choice
I did, but it lacks features that I use on daily basis, I don't care about games or UI speed, I want to use device in way I like , Zune sux ass, I'm happy with Linux at home and have nothing to synchronize at office where i have to use windows because of cad apps, Zune is slow even on my 6 core in office anyway, Bluetooth sux, friend tried to send me some pics from wedding and wp7 failed, USB tethering sux, does not work with w7 x64 and need to reboot device if i want to use Zune each time, 16 bit color limitation, my portfolio looks horrible on that great samoled display, gdocs for wp7 does not work with xls files, I'm not going to pay for something what is free on other platforms and does not work as should, no latitude, which i used pretty much, bing maps suxs, does not work in my region and gmaps does not locate me at all, no routing, useless, natively works only with MS services which I don't use, and does not work with 3rd party services, even my 5 years old 200mhz wm or symbian device is faster on internet thanks to compressed data and holds battery better than this joke, IE core from PC is nice maybe on WiFi, but on 3g it sux ass, I miss flash, I can live with that, but it's something that I expect from device in 2011, Google solved flash, ms won't because of minor Silverlight - that's stupid and dealbreaker for many people (imagine IE with flash, Silverlight and html5) I don't use Facebook or any social network - platform is not designed for me, it's strong in services i don't use and lacks features i use every day, even my old a200 dumbphone Sonyericsson can multitask 3rd party java apps without hassle...wp7 makes me too much trouble every day, Symbian device is still my pocket so i have 2 devices instead of one. WP7 is just microsofted iphone and that's not enough.
If anyone works on porting Android for omnia7 I'm willing to donate 50 bucks, but to be honest, it must be here this month, before I sell or throw this crap into river.
You already made your decision I'd say sell it! Since you already use linux, the synchronisation isn't worth much for you. And if you use the google services, you actually should get an android. WP7 just doesn't work for you.
I shouldn't wait for someone porting android to the omnia 7 if i were you. I've had a nexus one myself before getting an omnia, and I really liked it. I'd say, get a nexus S or a Galaxy S2, but I missed the microsoft services. (also xbox live attracts me).
Yeah, thanks for ya time, device is for sale for a few days, hope someone will take it one day,
Its shame that MS didn't go any further with wp7 compared to ios, because Omnia is nice piece of hw...
