Hi everyone!!
RockOn is a music player for Android and its main goal is to innovate on the UI side. To those of you who don't know it you can check it at http://abrantix.org/rockon.php.
Now comes the time where I'd like to expand the dev team, as I cannot do it all by myself . There's a lot of things to improve or fix and to make RockOn the best player I need help. In a first phase im planning to open the code to a small number of devs that will help me clean up the code and fix some of the most important bugs (right now the code is pretty ugly in some parts, and there are all sorts of architectural problems in the app structure). In a second phase RockOn would be completely open sourced to the whole community.
Also, RockOn currently has a 'donate' version, which I will make free as soon as this kicks-off. This will be a community project on the long run, thus not-for-profit.
So, if there are devs around interested in contributing please drop me an email (filipe.abrantes _at; gmail.com).
twitter for updates:

Cheers,
Filipe
Nice apps, really like the design and the album art, hope somebody will be interest to be part of this dev.
Wow I really do like the interface. I would be willing to help out, but it looks like you want really active developers for the first phase and I don't think I can commit for that. But of course if you don't mind having people making small fixes and passing them in sporadically I can help there.
I did notice a bug while searching for mp3s using non-ascii characters (specifically Chinese). I'm wondering if the like search in the sql database is even unicode aware.
Code:
07-23 04:36:44.897: INFO/SEARCH(2319): title LIKE '%我 %' OR artist LIKE '%我 %'
Regardless, hopefully you find some people who can push your app along quickly!
love your app, can only get better...
... and xda is the place to find developers who will make it happen. RockOn! is my default fall back app when HTCMusic doesn't work. I've had some issues with lag and FCs occasionally but I must admit, running RockOn on cyanogen's experimental build 3.9 with compcache and a backing_swap partition seems rock-solid. I used it all night and it was really smooth, only one hiccup and it passed NP. So great work fabrantes, I look forward to seeing what this community can do to make your app even better.
i was thinking it was weird that there is a lack of development of open source apps... especially essential stuffs like music and video players..... group development etc.... instead of relying on htc apps (closed sourced).
Unless i am not aware of such stuff

hi overpower, yes for this first phase I'd prefer to get a smaller group of people that are willing to commit to the project, deadlines and such. But we'll see how this evolves. I did not state this before, but this call also applies to designers.
i would be willing to help with design work, especially if you plan on adding widgets.

Yep, right now it has one widget but it is really a knock-off of the standard player's widget. Would be very nice to have a more advanced one. Drop me an email.
Where do I sign up?
Was thinking about building my own mp3 but your player pretty much rocks.
I use it all the time on my g1. I rather contribute and help to improve it.
I can help in the design & coding.
cool! send me an email (filipe.abrantes / gmail.com). ill be setting up a google project in the next couple of days.

I'd strongly suggest making your widget take up the whole screen and provide a lot of function. That way you could slide over to your music player and then slide back.
bought this on the market earlier, and got a refund saying item discontinued
its free now , re-download it
ah ok, that sorted that, now would there be a reason that im not getting the transparent background?
Good luck man! I see your point of view. It's really weird that essential apps aren't being made and improved open source style on Android. I salute you!

Translucent background was removed back somewhere in v1.2.x for performance reasons. The UI would get really laggish. I thought of making it an option, but never got the time to really put it in place.
Really hoping that RockOn evolves...it has alot of potential, but at the moment I use TuneWiki... smooth interface (although not as flashy), integrated lyric search, community interaction, etc... TuneWiki would be a good template for features to integrate into RO.

That would be fine for most of us since we have 5 screens (or however if using rogros launcher) so we have extras screens. Everyone else out there has only 3 screens and probably using it atleast alittle big. So if you would really want a full screen widget then you'd also need a smaller one as a second option.
a full screen widget would be really nice. Would be great if you could get it to play similar music like mixzing does or the itunes genius playlist.
fabrantes - Really like your music player. Awesome creativity and functionality with your app.
I use an HTC adapter to plug in my headphones and it has a button I can press twice to skip to the next song
On the default music player I can press the button once and it pauses the song.
It would be cool if you might add that to your app as well.
Thanks again awesome app.

With the influx of US-TM HD2 owners coming up soon, one of the things I think they might ask for is a Yelp application. I'm guessing this because I wish I had one! It seems every other mobile OS besides Symbian has a native app, but we're stuck with using the mobile site! We don't want to be associated with those Nokia people do we?
If you aren't familiar with Yelp, it's a review site for pretty much any business you can think of - very popular for restaurants, bars, etc. I know people in the US use it a lot. Yelp has a UK/Canada presence as well, not sure how popular it is.
As mentioned, we can currently go to m.yelp.com and search, but it's not ideal since you have to type in your location, type in what you're looking for, and almost makes you not want to use it.
If you get the Yelp app for iPhone, webOS, Android, BB, etc., it'll use your phone's 'network triangulation' or GPS to automatically show you what's around you. Of course, once you have that, you can filter by category (restaurant, shopping, etc.), and sort by rating (and other various features.)
If you click on an item of interest, you can read the reviews, get details on the store (location, hours, etc.), and if the app is developed enough - write reviews, post pictures, and be a contributing member of the site.
Yelp has an API that seems pretty easy and robust, where requests are passed along like so
Code:
Sample Request:
[url]http://api.yelp.com/business_review_search?term=yelp&lat=37.788022&long=-122.399797&radius=10&limit=5&ywsid=XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX[/url]
And you get a crapload of data back, all nicely formatted and easy to handle.
More info here: http://www.yelp.com/developers
TBH, I would try and code it myself, but I'd only be able to create a backend, maybe (never coded for WM before.) The GUI is the most important part since a lot of the heavy lifting is done with the API (otherwise, we'd have to scrape and... ugh.)
I'm sure I'm not the only one that would be interested in such an app, and I'm willing to pay for it. I'll start a bounty of $20 for anyone interested in developing it! All I ask for release is a touch-friendly Yelp reader that transmits current location. Further yelp-contributing features can be developed later @devs discretion.
Maybe Aloqa could help?
Hi Mazzarin,
I am using Aloqa, by default it shows Cafes, Restaurants, "what's hot", Sights, Bars and Cubs, Movies, Wikipedia, Fashion and last.fm.
You can add other channels or create your own.
All the best,
Peter
Aloqa and Yelp
Aloqa has a Yelp channel as well... but...
I would LOVE to have Yelp... +1
I will also put in $10 bounty for this.
p_fr1968: Thanks for the heads up. I'm downloading it now veeerrry slowly. I looked up the app on Marketplace and it seems to have people that either love it or absolutely hate it so lets see!
taimoorhusain: I think I convinced a dev to do it, hopefully we'll see a release soon!
Only had a very quick look at this, shouldn't be too muh hassle writing an app for this, I'd have to dev it for windows then port it WM (as I'm new to the 3.5 cf so don't know what it can and more importantly can't do)
Tried aloqa... it works okay. Seems buggy, doesn't have kinetic scrolling, and only does GPS OR GSM location, not both. I'll write the devs with my thoughts and maybe they'll fix it up! But it DOES have Yelp!
djingonthenet - That would be cool if you could do it, but like I mentioned in the above post, a dev who already has a running app has stated he'll do it. More competition or something I guess?!

Did you ever find a Yelp one? I know you mentioned the developer of Next2Me incorporating it into that (nice) app; but it doesn't seem to have happened.
I find Aloqa's interface a bit scruffy. I noticed there's an app for Qype in the uk app store (Qype's like Yelp but better for Uk/Europe; bit sketchy for U.S.) but I still can't find anything for Yelp in the U.S. or otherwise
Does the Yelp iphone app let you leave your own reviews (like Qype does)? I had a quick look at the Yelp API but it looks like it's 'read-only'. I think that's half the fun being able to tell people when your restaurant food arrived cold!
James.
Never found one unfortunately. Not sure about the capabilities of the iPhone app, but I'd be happy to get read-only access still!
Yeah me too. Thanks for letting me know. Fingers crossed the big organisations start writing their apps for at least WP7.
I'll email the author of the winmo Qype app (Magic Guidebook) and see if he's willing to add in Yelp.
Awesome, let me know how it goes.
Hey guys! I don't know if you've ever tried one of those speed reading softwares (like iReadFast for Mac OS), but they really turn reading into a whole new experience. It's less tiring and a lot faster. And, guess what, there already is an app for the much loved iPhone (called QuickReader), which takes speed reading to a mobile device. In their FAQs, they talk about eventually taking QuickReader to Android OS, but nothings planned yet. So... if any of you developers feel the urge to do some good for all us heavy readers... why not make an app? Cheers, Thomas

+1 -- the lack of an RSVP app (or at least a good one... there is SpeedReader - http://www.appbrain.com/app/speed-reader-lite/com.shrednet.SpeedReader - but the free version isn't good enough to justify risking buying the full app, whenever that becomes available).

I would love to see this.
SpeedRead lite sucks. I'm using it now, only supports .txt files and has terrible features.
Would love to see this!
Regards
Smith
Yo guys!
I'm almost finished an app for exactly this!
You will be able to flash text across your screen at up to 999 words per minute
Also, it saves and reads to/from the SD card so you can just drop in .txt files and it will read them, you can create new .txt files by pasting content into the app too! It also has a simplified comprehension test which tracks your progress over the last 30 odd tries and displays it in a nice graph.
Right now, I'm just designing the UI and then I'm pretty much done.
It will be called 'Speedr', watch out for it!
Please post and I'll be happy to beta test.
Also, could you PLEASE build in ePub support -- I'd be willing to buy that app!
Yo Matt,
I'm not sure its ready for Beta just yet, I actually found out it has a couple more important little stuff to sort out, like properly putting loading large amounts of text into threads etc..
Epub.. that would be very nice indeed, but I'm not aware of any Java library's that would read that for me :/
I'll be sure to look around though, I can see how this would be another big selling point! Thanks for the tip, hadn't thought of this!
The great thing about ePub is that its pretty much xhtml in a modified .zip wrapper. So working with it isn't to bad. In terms of available libraries/resources, check out:
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/3645795/epub-library-for-java-or-android
http://www.siegmann.nl/epublib
Either sounds like a good place to start.
Not to sound harsh but an ereader w/o ePub support will be a very tough sell. RSVP + ePub is a novel (and needed) reading app.
Good luck. Really looking forward to app.
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Thanks for that Matt, the Epublib library looks real nice, I think I'll have a go at using that. I'll also be looking into providing PDF support on top of the basic .txt support. This should cover most ebooks.
By the way, just so I'm clear, the emphasis for my app will be on improving your reading speed, not necessarily just a plain reader. For example, while flashing the text, only a pause button will be there. The user will not be able to move backwards or forwards as this would be sorta like cheating.
This looks awesome...
Sent from my SCH-I500 using Tapatalk
Thanks for the reply Mark. I really encourage you to prioritize ePub above PDF. The reason is that currently Pdf's preservation of print design artifacts (page numbers, hard line breaks, hard hyphenation, headers and footers, in page footnotes) kills the value of RSVP, as it breaks the reading/processing flow. This is one of the many reasons why ePub is so superior to PDF for ereading.
As far as the app only being about reading speed, that's a bummer -- I think you would be surprised at the amount of people who would like a straight out ereading AP like this (I'd be happy to spec it out if you ever would like). That said keeping with you goal, let me suggest one feature to add to the screen: have the app pause/play by tapping the general text area and then add speed up/slow down arrows that can effect the rate of display in real time. You can also use the volume rocker, but given the increase in larger tablets I think providing an on-screen alternative is a good idea. Also think about display a wpm count.
Good luck.

Hello,
I'm new here and I see a very smart guys around...I would like you to challange to give me some new, fresh ideas of apps/widgets. Doesn't matter how strage, crazy or funny is!
Can you do this?
Best regards
1) A srollable widget in witch you can place icons or other widgets so it acts like an app drawer
2) An app that can control an other android device like a remote control (already there for pc's). For axample: you can control your tablet that is connected to a tv.
As you said idea may sound crazy so would be great if you develop an app that cover the naked bodies when a porn website is opened on your device.

I don't think that would be possible with an application.
I think thats more of something that would need to be developed by the website owners.

You obviously know nothing of image recognition. That's actually quite a simple task, for a seasoned developer, using existing (and publicly available) libraries.
Maybe not actual clothing, but it could certainly cover nudity.
make a widget 1x1, 2x1, 4x1 size (or any suitable) that shows missed call count, unread sms and emails
should display something like:
(in 1 row) 2 calls, 1 sms, 2 emails
or
(in a column)
2 calls
1 sms
2 emails
or
instead of text, put small icons
then ability to hide if count is zero or change color if number is greater than zero.
don't forget to have ability to choose email inbox (if many are used)
for 2x1 widget, add ability to have battery percentage display and next alarm (this can easily fit if icons for missed, unread "stuff" is used)
The idea is to have a small, yet very informative widget that packs only important information: missed call, unread sms and email, battery level, next alarm. and ability to configure each information (color, position, icon, ability to hide)
I'm sure if this is implemented (or at least 50%), people will like it!
Nothing crazy but just a music control widget (► Play ▌▌ Pause ■ Stop) for google listen and maybe a universal control for whatever is playing at the moment.
Great!!! Keep it up!!!
Thank you guys!!! Very nice.
You are creative minds, more ideas, please, come on!!!
I would like to develop a very good application, original, useful and funny and can offer a prize (like money) for the best idea.
I think I can set up a "Top 20" Ideas and to the first 3 some to offer prizes.
What do you think?

Please please please please please make a Google Talk widget! Tons of people want this but it seems like no one is up for making a widget.
A good widget would maybe being able to view your messages or quickly reply to messages using the widget without launching gTalk itself.
Going further, maybe a better gTalk client in itself that allows for popup windows and quick replies. There are tons of apps/widgets like this for SMS, just wish gTalk got some love as it is used fairly widely.
I'd say it would be a surefire way to rake in some dough as there is absolutely no competition on the market. There is only client available is the official gTalk client (not counting multi-protocol IM clients) and only 1 gTalk widget on the market (status changer).
How about the ability to take a picture of documents with your camera and be able to use the data in excel. Sort of a text to column app using your camera. $$$
MOOGLY
A simple but powerful to do list widget designed to be customized. Now with auto-hiding buttons!
Features:
★ Multiple independent, scrollable widgets
★ Quick, dialog based entry
★ Tick to delete or mark complete
★ Widgets are optimized for Honeycomb
★ Predefined themes or total customization
★ RTL support
★ Custom image backgrounds
This widget was inspired by To Do List from HTC Sense - for some reason, they were the only ones to get it right.
Lite Market link - restricted to 8 entries and only one widget
https://market.android.com/details?id=fahrbot.apps.moogly.lite&feature=search_result
Screens:
Must have
- More better themes
- Notifications and alarms
- Sorting
Could use
- Image background transparency
- Save custom themes
Would be nice
- Button themes
- Fullscreen note character board

I just downloaded and installed the free version and it looks really nice. However, I do feel that there is room for improvement in the functionality.
1. Scrollable please! I want to use the widget in a 2x4 space, but I have lots of things I want to put on it. Making the widget scrollable will allow me to use a smaller widget size instead of putting it in the 4x4 space I use now (I gave it its own screen). Ill pay for the app if you implement this.
2. Mark as done in one click! As of now, you click once to open a menu that shows your tasks, then you click a second time to mark a task done, then you click a third time to close the menu (EDIT This is totally wrong. Its only 2 clicks, but I think the point stands) Placing a check box or some other kind of button next to each task that marks it as done would streamline this process.
3. Option to display "notes" on the widget. Again, something that would remove "clicks" from the process of seeing notes. Maybe make a global default for displaying notes in all tasks, then be able to edit each tasks individual "note display options" independently of the default. Also, if a task has "hidden notes", maybe place an asterisk at the end to denote that is has hidden notes. As for tasks that display their notes on the widget, the notes should have their own font size, style, and color options, and ideally (for me) should be indented.
These are all just suggestions. I hope some of them get you thinking of ways to improve your app. I'm definitely looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
Great ideas... but may be difficult to implement. Lets see what ftgg says.

Cool.
The amount of r&d I do depends on the number of people that buy the app. Everyone thinks its the other way round, but for a company time is money, so I have to see an app succeed first, before committing additional resources...
So when people just use lite versions, never leave ratings or comments but still demand features many studios lose interest.

If this comment is directed towards me, I certainly wasn't demanding anything. I was just trying to help you improve your product.
If you think people will buy your app before it has the features they are looking for, you might want to reconsider. I rated your app a 3 because it doesn't have what I'm looking for. I'm not going to give you a 5, let alone spend money, on something that isn't what I want. I hope that makes some sense.

How nice... however, I am a professional developer with over 20 apps. Im pretty sure i know what im doing in this business.
The 3 star rating is just a sign of ignorance, because two of the three features you want implemented are not possible under android at all. In fact, i know of only one other to do list app anywhere near as good as the current early (0.2) release of Moogly. And its still rubbish.
Giving the app a low rating despite it performing exactly as described will only lead to generally lower ratings and less time spent on development. But thats our lot - getting flamed by noobs with $500 phones who shy away from spending $1.48 on something they will use on a daily basis.
Haha, i know exactly how you feel mate - people just dont understand
You are one of the few devs that actually engages with the users, and some are always just ungrateful. I have been trying to do some modifications to it, but as you told me before its not possible!
He gave it 3 star because it didnt have what he wanted, but the app never claimed to have more than what is in the description. The only good reviews are the ones that give 5 stars and say "Works as advertised".
@ftgg99 - Just out of interest which of those suggestions are not possible in Android? Just asking as I'm still getting to grips with what you can and can't do in apps and widgets on Android. Is it possible to mark as done directly in the widget? Also, I have been using GTasks and integrating it into Pure Grid Calendar so all my stuff is in one place, however I fancied a change so am trying out beOrganized at present (but getting really pissed off having realised that the Voice entry function only works when you have wifi/data available - wtf!). Anyway, I'd like to give your app a try so will feed back. Tasks is a big thing for me on my phone and something I use equally as much as my calendar, and having tried most things out there I have to agree that none of them are a perfect solution. So good luck with your app, if I like the lite version I will happily pay your humble price
BTW, would you consider adding in alarm/notification reminder for tasks like in GTasks - find that very handy...

Regarding the not possible thing - i was pretty red-eye after coding all night and after a second thought i must admit that i was wrong. All of them are possible. Im a noob.
Originally i just made this for myself after finding nothing adequate on the market, and i never use any other features - why bother with notifications for example when the widget is one one of only three screens i stare at all day anyway?
Now of course ill have to take people's suggestions into account so the minimalism i enjoy will have to take a backseat
The alarm, notification thing is on the todo list already. Will be implemented next week for sure.
You see, that's what happens. You make something perfect and everyone wants to change it
If you need a crash dummy just PM me, I don't break easily

How nice... however, I am a professional developer with over 20 apps.

First off I want to say that the only reason I'm still in this thread is because I think there has been some kind of misunderstanding. I'm not one to argue online, but on the other hand, I don't like people thinking I'm flaming them when I'm trying to praise them.
I respect you're time spent as a dev, but I've been a consumer for longer than you've been a dev and I know that I will not buy a product based on future potential. Yes, even if it's $1.48. As a dev, you should know how those small sums can add up to be quite a bit over time.
Your app is the closest thing I have found to date to what I'm looking for in a todo widget. That having been said, I can't use it because it is missing some, of what are to me, key features. That having been said, I can't rate this app perfectly. The rating system, to me, does not reflect how well an app does what it advertises, but how useful/fun the app is overall and compared to other apps.
In my comment (EDIT: the one i made in the market), I did say that the app had serious potential. That's the highest praise I can give at the moment, but I think it's great praise.
I would appreciate you retracting the ignorant/noob comment, as you realized that the features are implementable.
Thank you if you've read this and thought about it objectively. Good luck with the app. I hope it's a success.
Great app, it would be perfect with Google Tasks sync
Hi everyone,
just wanted to show you guys a new app I've been working on for quite some time.
When I started the project I was working on a real-time-strategy-game for android, but creating all the assets took me so much time, that I soon began looking out for good spriting- / pixel-art- / painting- program for my mobile device in order to be able to work on my sprites when on the train or somewhere not in front of my home-computer.
As I was pretty much disappointed with what the market had to offer (no offense against the creator of pixelesque: that app simply didn't exist at that time), I started work on an own program.
It took me a very long time to actually get the app halfway done (because I have been very busy with university and other stuff) but a few days ago I finally released a first version of it and since I am working very hard on improving the app wherever possible.
Youtube announcement video: youtube.com/watch?v=gbw-I6Z-1w0
The app on google play: play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=ch.subgate.spritestudio
If you guys like spriting/pixel-art please check out the app, I'd love to hear your feedback/wishes/suggestions.
Thanks in advance.
Features I'm already working on:
- Color palettes
- Mirror-Painting-Mode
- Layer
- Onionskin for animations
- Spritemap autopacking
Nice App / UI could be better...
Hello isam2k,
first of all i would like to let you know that i really think this app is great and you have several fantastic ideas in there. Nice work :good:
From a UI standpoint i think you could improve the overall experience.
For example the Create New Picture pop up dialog. Wouldn't it be nice if you'd offer 3 Icons for (32x32 / 64x54 / Custom)
Users could instantly choose one size and it would take away from making to much decisions out of the box.
I have tons of ideas for you wonderful app. If you like you can pm me.
cheers
David
@Neosushi68
Thanks a lot for your feedback. If you don't mind, just post your ideas right here, maybe others will have good ideas as well and so they can immediately see what already has been suggested.
Offering pre-set sizes as well is actually a good idea, definitively a feature I am going to add (maybe not with buttons but with a spinner offering some presets).
Ok just had a force-close-report from a user. If you guys try out the app and a FC happens, please do not forget to send the report, this helps so much.
If, for some reason, you are unable to send me the report, then please post me the following information here:
[Device][ROM],
[ErrorMsg],
[Random error/Error in response to interaction]
[If interaction -> Describe last interaction]
[If random -> Describe app state (open dialogs, etc)
Thanks in advance.
Sam
Ok was really busy but I finally uploaded Sprite Studio 0.2.1b. This update basically introduces palettes and also comes along with some bugfixes.
If run into problems when using the palette editor, consider watching my tutorial video first:
