ROM cooking and upgrading of OS between devices - General Questions and Answers

Hello to everyone.
I starting cooking by myself and I need to summarize some knowledge, which I got all over xda forums. Now I know, how to dump/convert/add/remove, etc., but only within one device type. That leads to my question. How is actually made upgrade of OS between different devices? For example (it is meant in general) I have Vox device with WM6.0. Then I dump MS smartphone emulator image with WM 6.1. What is actually needed to add to 6.1 dumped ROM to make it working with Vox device?
I am guessing some drivers or something like this (maybe SYS?), but I know nothing about this so maybe some of you can point me to some directions.
Thanks for all your advices.

Windows mobile to android

Hey guys,
I was wondering if there is anyway to change my OS from WM 6.1 to the new Android 2.0 OS. If you can give me any in site on how to do this i would greatly appreciate it thanks.
In some devices you can run android on top of wm. But some functionalities don't work yet. Go to your device's subforum and search if someone started the port process.
Check for a forum for my device and there is one so i just posted the same question in the smartphone general forum. I dont want to run android on top of WM i want to completely change from wm to android.

That requires a new phone.
I had a look at Android first by running it on my HTC Diamond but it is incomplete. I liked what I saw so went out and got an Android phone.
Android is loaded by running a utility called Haret which somehow manages to reboot the phone into Android replacing WM. When you reboot again it goes back to WM. Without knowing which phone ou have it's impossible to know if that is possible for you to do. Look at the Wiki section of this site specifically for your device.
i am running a samsung i910 omnia from verizon wireless. I like windows mobile but i love the android system. The wm allows you to use more technical stuff where as android is more fun.

Some flashing questions

Hello,
I have a Wizard phone - o2 minis s with WM5 installed, which i would like to upgrade to WM6. I went through some tutorials, but all of them mainly concentrate on ways to unlock the CID. Neither of them show where to take the WM6 ROM from or how to load it to the phone.
But anyway, i have done my research and found the fallowing comparison:
forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=427328 and based on it, i choose the [5/Aug/08] TNT.20273 Series "BETA" (Vanilla/Official/Professional) Now, in it's description it says OS Version=20273, Windows Mobile 6.1 DIAMOND. What does the DIAMOND means? Is it some special software or will work only on certain devices?
Can somebody please tell me is it a good choice or maybe provide with a bigger list of available firmwares? What is the difference between chosen by me and the official microsoft distribution?
Thank you for your help.
Wooju
You will find that many cooked ROMs have titles like Diamond, HD, Topaz, etc.
What this means is the chef modeled the ROMs UI after the Diamond, HD, Topaz, etc.
All OEM shipped ROMs are WM5.0, but if you choose cooked ROMs then you can have WM6.0, WM6.1, and WM6.5.

Any cooks able to manipulate a wm 6.1 rom to run some custom software..

Basic story is i work as a sky satelite engineer and we have to use software on a PDA to manage our work stock etc... this app only runs on WM 5 and WM 6 not 6.1, are there any cooks willing to try and make a workaround so this app will run on 6.1 ? I would love to have a nice fast 6.1 rom to use for work as i use tomtom and this work app at the same time and it manages my contacts etc for work.
Thread move to this section cause it's a general question about WM6.1 not to the device HTC Cruise/polaris

[Q] how to Get Back to WM 6.5 ?

Hi Everybody !
you all know how strange it might be some requests form your boss but this is the most strange one !
My Boss has a system that work on WM 6.5 only and doesn't work on WM 7 and he requested that I should Provide him with 40 New WM 6.5 devices !
you know that they are not available currently So I figured out that I should buy new WM 7 Devices and Flash it Back to WM 6.5 !
I think theoretically this is possible but have anyone tried it ?!!!
I want to Try it on HTC 7 pro Device , Could anyone tell me what the steps I need to do that ?
any other suggested Devices ? I only want it to be New ,with QWERTY keypad and I can install WM 6.5 on it !
Can this be done with an Android Device ?
Thank you all in Advance.
Not possible.
Contact your business carrier and see if they can get anything, otherwise tell boss it is no longer made and WP7 is not an upgrade but a new product which is incompatable and nowhere near as good as WM6.5.
Just tell him MS have lost the plot.

I feel your pain mate, WM6.5 was great and MS have taken a huge leap backwards. We're not alone either, their market share has plummetted due to the move as people have either desperately scrounged for WM6.5 devices or moved to Android and had their in house apps re-written or found new alternatives.
WP7 and winmo 6.5 are completely different and not backwards compatible as said above.
Winmo 6.5 was good, but Mango is promising, however, specifically written programs written for business are a different ball game, get on to ebay and buy some HD2's, unless you know a developer who can re-write the programme for WP7?

There is no Upgrading for the System !
I will try the HD2 Choice.
Thank you for your support.
The hd2 is awesome. I've had win6.5, win7, ubuntu and a ton of android versions on it. If you have an issue, just wipe it clean and start over.
