[Q] What is Hero/Rosie/Sense UI?
[A] The Rosie/Sense UI is a User Inerface created by HTC using the Android OS and made Android seem beautiful and amazing. From all the widgets to the eye candy and to the social network intergration, Rosie/Sense UI shows what Android should have been when it started. For a promo go here:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Do I need to have Root?
[A] Yes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Do i NEED the new Radio and SPL?
[A] Yes, you MUST have the new Radio AND SPL
To install:
Things you need:
New SPL - Download
New Radio - Download
Your Current ROM - CyanogenMod 3.6
SD Card Reader
Rooted G1 Phone
Computer
USB Cable
Patience
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Install Radio FIRST
Download the Radio Update
Rename it to update.zip
Remove your SD Card from your phone and place it in your SD Card Reader
Put the update.zip at the root of your SDcard (root = not in any folder)

You should be able to access your Home screen (If its stuck on the Google G1 screen dont panic, just remove your battery for now)
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Installing the new SPL
Note: To update you must have a PVT board. To Check go into fastboot (Power and Camera and check) Thanks persiansown
Take your SD Card out again and plug it into the pc
Remove the update.zip that you put in there
Download your current Rom or any other ROM that you want. I suggest CyanogenMod 3.6
Download the SPL Update
Rename the SPL Update to update.zip
Remove your SD Card from your phone and place it in your SD Card Reader
Put the update.zip at the root of your SDcard (root = not in any folder)
Insert your sdcard back into the phone
Turn off your phone (Hold power and press Power Off) or put your battery back in and turn it on
Hold the Home button and then press the power button (Keep holding power)
You will now enter recovery
Open up your keyboard and press Alt-S
Let it finish the update
Now it will reboot on its own back to recovery
Reboot again by pressing Home + Back
Your phone will be stuck on the T-Mobile G1 Screen (Again DONT FREAK)
Remove the battery from your phone
Remove your SD Card and plug it back into your computer
Take the ROM that you downloaded and rename it update.zip
Remove the update.zip that was on your SD Card and put this new one it
Put the battery back into your phone
Enter recovery (Home + Power)
Press Alt+s to update
Let it finish
Press Home + Back to reboot
Thats it! You now have your new SPL and Radio

[Q] Do i need Cyanogen's Recovery Image?
[A] No, but its recommended.
To install:
Download the recovery image HERE
Place the cm-recovery-1.3.1.img file in the root of your SD Card (Root = not in any folder)
Go back to your phone (Dont forget to unmount)
Open terminal and type in the following
Code:
su (wait for a screen to popup and press "allow")
flash_image recovery /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.3.1.img
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Do i need a formatted SD Card with EXT2/3 Partition
[A] No, but you should. It will make Hero and Rosie run much smoother and MUCH faster with NO lag.
Use SDSPLIT to create your partition - Follow this Guide
OR
Format your SD Card with EXT3 and Swap Parition
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] How do i install a Hero Rom?
[A] Download a Hero Rom, i suggest JacHero's or Dizzy's
Rename your download from XXXXXXX.zip to update.zip
Place update.zip in the root of your sdcard (root = not in any folder)
Boot into recovery (Home + Power)
Wipe (Alt+w) and Flash (Alt+s)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Im getting a Boot Loop, what do i do now?
[A] Wipe and Flash again. If that does not work, reformat and repartition your SD Card, then wipe and reflash.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Should i use swapper? What is a good setting to use
[A] Yes
Perfect Setting:
Swap Location: /system/sd/swap.swp
Swap Space: 32mb
Swapinness: 10 or 60 which ever works better for you
Note: Swapper will kill your SDCard faster then normal
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Is Apps2SD done automatically?
[A] Yes.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] What is ADB and Fastboot and how do i use and install it?
[A] Follow this guide
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] How do i reformat my EXT2/3 Patition before flashing a New ROM?
[A] These commands are for ADB (Each line is a new command)
Code:
adb remount
adb shell
rm -r /system/sd/*
reboot recovery
then flash the update.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] What are the best settings to make Hero lag free?
[A] This is what i found to work best:
1) Swapper Settings:
Location: /system/sd/swap.swp
Swap Space: 32mb
Swappiness: 10 or 60 w/e works for you
2) Remove any widgets or apps that you done need through adb or terminal
Code:
adb rm /data/app_s/Stocks.apk
or in terminal :
Code:
su
rm /data/app_s/Stocks.apk
3) Use only 3 home screens, leave the other 2 blank
4) Use as less widgets as possible (Clock, Weather, and Twitter)
Thats what i do and it works perfectly! Enjoy!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] What does not work in Hero
[A] Bluetooth and LED lights are not working ATM but are being worked on. Some people are having issues with SMS and MMS as well.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] I am stuck in recovery and need to add files to my sd card

[Q] What is a nandroid backup and how do i use it?
[A] Go here and see the 3rd Post
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] Is a class 6 sdcard required?
[A] No, but it will improve speed and performance especially when using swaper
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Q] How do i know what class my SDHC Card is?
[A] Only SDHC cards have classes! To know what class your SDHC Card is just look at it

Was this proven to be true? I did brick a PVT device, but it was because I updated in the wrong order when it wasn't known that it would kill phones.

whoa nice thread.
i wish there would have been something like this back in february on how to root my phone.
lol
i took forever.

Great read. One question I do not have a sd card reader, couldn't I just put my sd card into my phone then add the files to it?

this was my question as well, as I do not have an sd card reader. Is there a way to do this without?

From what I have read, yes but I could be mistaken.
Regardless, OP, you should let the reader know of the inherent risk.

If you can get into your home screen, just use USB, thats fine but a card reader would be handy if you are stuck in recovery, especially when flashing the SPL

I suggest reformating your EXT2 partition becuase something could have happened with the auto apps2sd. Reformat/repartition then wipe and flash. That should fix it

Thanks for the great instructions!
I have nandroided and restored backups a few times when I've tested various images, but always without an a2sd setup.
Now that I am on a Cyanogen image and using a2sd is there a specific nandroid/backup I should do?
1) I guess I don't know if nandroid will backup the a2sd portion of my apps?
2) I'm not sure if/how I should delete the ext2 apps when I install a new image?
3) Does a nandroid restore put the a2sd back?
Any chance you can include this info in your guide?
I would love to get a complete backup of my current install with a2sd as easily as a nandroid backup. Be able to install a hero image. Be able to quickly switch back to my old Cyanogen image if things don't work well enough for me. BTW, does the latest recovery allow easier reinstalls of a nandroid now? Using the flashboot util worked ok, but I just wondered if the current recovery image made restores as easy as it makes backups. And if it handles the ext2/3 portions as well now.
Thanks again for the great guide!

ok...one more question. If I don't have the sd card reader, can I just use another object..like another phone and put my sd card in that to access the files? Or do I have to use the sd card reader? My thinking was that I could just grab my old Dash or my mom's phone and put my sd card in there to access the files on it.

First of all, if you want to learn more about nandroid go to the third post on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=532719
Second, nandroid does not backup apps2sd, if you want to backup your /data/app folder or w/e just use ADB. Personaly i would use the ADB file explorer becuase it is so much easier to use!

use w/e you have . As long as you can transfer files to your sd card, especialy when you cant mount it, is a good thing. If you are stuck i added a Q & A about mounting your sd card in recovery mode

A2SD on rooted Desire with stock ROM

I'm just wondering if it's possible to have a2sd on a stock rooted ROM? If it's possible it would be lovely if anybody would like to tell me EXACTLY how to set this up.
Thanks in advance
If you read the forums and use the search ability you will know how to do it. So i am going to be brief
Once your device is rooted and your familar with the recovery flashing from sd method you need apps2sd (http://www.megaupload.com/?d=QKTUKHEM) copy this to your sd, wipe and flash like you would if your rooting.
Restart your phone
then when it boots back up keep the volume down held and you will see a hboot screen, then go to recovery (like you did when rooting) use the recovery.bat then you partition your sd card SWAP=0 and EXT2=512 then select ext2 to 3 then reboot and your done.
please read the check to see if installed thread for more info.

Trying holding home after restarting - into recovery
Select Partition Card and follow the clicks.
Load a Rom onto the card using the MS Toggle
Flash a Zip from card
this might get better replies in the QA section.
Can I run this on Sapphire? Whens the next release date?

well, if it was a "while back" they probably don't have MS toggle ( mass storage, i.e mount sd over usb )
@OP
just get the rom onto your sdcard, power off phone, remove sdcard, put in adaptor , then in to your pc's card reader.
you will also want to upgrade recovery
RA1.7.0 is probably your best bet

Totally true FR.
Dont worry OP, Im bilingual in British :
To get the rom onto your sd card:
Power off phone, remove sd card and use an adapter to get a rom on.
This method can be used if your recovery does not support MS.

thats because you flashed it from cm5, nothing wrong with the recovery
issue is CM5+'s kernels
Since they can't boot to ROM the instructions on Amon_RA's page are perfect.
clockwork recovery's page does not give any detail on how to flash, infact it recommends you do it via ROM Manger, which can get you stuck for a bit
PS you can use Amon_RA's instructions to install Clockwork
I'm warming to clockwork, but it has some things I just don't like
No console ((((
No flash/action confirmation, ( trackball is not great, you sometimes slip up or down when pressing ... grrrr )

Can't access SD card, halp!

Hi everyone, looking for a little guidance.
Phone: Android G1 (Rogers Canada Dream) running Cyanogen 4.2.15.1, been running fine since 4.2.6.1
Removed SD card while it was on and it rebooted... when it restarted it showed no applications and said the SD card was inaccessible and required a format. After rebooting a few times with no success I bit the bullet and formatted it... all apps are gone except for the ones that are on that image for Cyanogen. I have no market app to download new apps and when I plug it into my PC and mount it I don't see it show up as a drive like it did so I have no way to get the apps back on.
Has anyone had this happen before? Phone still works but I need to get it back to a state where I can get access to the SD and install the market... Any suggestions appreciated!!
There is a thread on the HERO section of Modaco site called "no adb, no sd". I think the 1st post on the last page MIGHT help. There are adb commands you can run to see if the phone has randomly stopped accessing the SD. Worth a shot.
PM me if you have trouble finding the thread n I'll have a look when I'm at my laptop.
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I misunderstood I think.
So it is now showing an sd present? Have you tried formatting in a pc?
Tried reboot without the sd in, then insert once fully booted again?
Sent from my HTC Hero using XDA App
I remove the SD Card, formatted it in my PC put it back in the phone and I can store pics and vids on it and access them but cant see or access it from the PC when in the phone. I also have no file browser so I cant install any apps or even access the market icon is gone).

Hi there! I had posted on the forum with the G1 issue where my SD card seemed to have died.

I have since removed the SD card and reformatted it, I can store pics and vids and replay them so the card is fine. I tried letting it boot up then adding the SD card when booted, that caused it to reboot, same issue...
Not having access to the card, I cant install any apps or browse the SD to install from there... really sucks
I'd be willing to blow it away and restart too and install CyanogenMod-5.0.8 but I need some guidance.

Ok,.... So pictures and videos taken with your phone camera DO save to your SD?.... and you CAN access them on your phone OR if you put your SD into your PC/Lappy?... But not when trying to "mount SD"?
Or have I got that completely wrong?.... Did you put pics&vids onto it through your PC, and thats the only access you get to it?

Pics taken DO save to me SD. I Can access them from a PC is I remove the SD and put it in the PC. Not when I plug the phone in via USB then tell it to mount.
I just did a low level format, same issue.
UPDATE: Just tried the Android System Recovery and Toggle USB-MS and it shows on my laptop now! Going to try the recovery backup now.
aha,... so its just a mounting issue, not that the hardware has turned itself off.
Once when using an older ROM (maybe Villain 10?) we had this same issue, not able to mount SD,... going into Settings --> Connect to PC --> and turning off Notify/ask me solved the problem.
I just partitionned it using:
parted /dev/block/mmcblk0
print (to verfiy we know what size card we are dealing with, the details should be straight forward)
rm 1
rm 2
mkpartfs primary fat32 0 7500
mkpartfs primary ext2 7500 7948
quit
upgrade_fs
reboot recovery
Then put CyanogenMod-5 For Dream/Magic on the SD and renamed it update.zip
I'm in Android System recovery now and just did a nandroid backup.
I should be able to WIPE then FLASH UPDATE IMAGE right?

Yes, if you have the ROM image on the SD Card (FAT32 partition), you can go flash the image.

If your contacts are saved in the phone's memory, then yes. Any settings, apps, configurations that are stored on the phone will all be gone.
A wipe pretty much gives you the factory settings. (As if you just bought the phone) So you'll have to re-signin into your Google Account and let the Contacts Sync, etc..
EDIT: Depending on what you are flashing (flashing and wiping are two different things), you may not even need to wipe.
Hmmm I tried flash update image and got:
E: Cant open /sdcard/update.zip (No such file or directory)
When I mount it in system recovery I see the LOST.DIR and update.zip

Try this:
-Confirm the Image-
1) Make sure you have the full image you are going to flash. (Compare MD5 Hashes and/or just redownload the image)
2) Make sure the image you are flashing is the in the ROOT directory of your SDCard. In other words, it shouldn't be in any folder.
-Flash the Image-
1) When in Recovery, choose to flash an image.
2) Depending on what recovery you have, you may have to select/find the Image you want to flash.
3) Flash the image
-Wipe (Depends)-
1) If you are coming from a different ROM base (ie anything -> cyan), you'll want to wipe.
2) After the phone successfully flashes the image, wipe the phone.
Reboot.
Let me know how it goes.
I pulled the new image from: Latest version: 5.0.8-DS - 06/19/2010
Download: http://cyanogen-upda...8-DS-signed.zip
but it says no such file or DIR... weird...
The only partition I can see on my PC to put it on is the main partition...
I just downloaded the file and renamed it update.zip

I just realized the main reason that you posted this topic. From what I am assuming, either:
a) Your SD Card reader is dead
b) The software isn't recognizing the SD Card reader.
Best bet at this point is to setup ADB (ADB For Dummies) and flash the image from your computer. It can get a slight bit complicated, but just slowly go through each step for installing ADB.
Once ADB is set up, you can flash the image from the computer.

The SD card reader in my phone? It has to work if I can read an write to it ( tested photos and videos) and in recovery I was able to make a backup.
If its the software I need to flash it then right? ADB does make me nervous as I only used it once... I just tried using the terminal emulator on the phone to flash a recovery image I had made while back:
cd /sdcard
flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-backup.img
and got the message "error writing recovery: Permission denied"

If you can view the pictures that you saved on the SD card from the phone, then both the software and hardware are functioning correctly.
Regarding the permission denied:
1) What happens if you "su - " in terminal?
2) First try one(1) ^ and then try to reinstate the permissions. (In recovery, go to console and type : fix_permissions)
Not sure otherwise.

[Q] Full Wipe on ROOTED CDMA Hero, NOW can't flash or see SDcard.

Hey! I found a post to another user who had a similar issue here: forum.xda-developers.com/show...=709788&page=2
I also can get into recovery, however, it's not finding any backup to use etc.
I think if I could get a recovery img pushed to my SD card and go back to stock, I could work with that. Running Zen Rom 1.7 currently. I was trying to clear up some space to install apps2sd as I was out of room and did a full wipe after I made a copy on my PC of my entire SD Card, but now when i go into my phone shell it confirms the phone but can't see system directory.
Not sure how to get stuff back on SD to work with it. Any ideas?? HELP- Phone is 100% DOWN!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

you might need to format the sd card, see if that helps

[Tut] Upgrade/Change SD Card with Ext2/3 [14/01 - Added Extra Freeware tuts]

This tutorial will show you how to Upgrade / Change to a new SD card having an EXT2/3 partition. This tutorial is for Windows platform only and assumes that you are comfortable with doing some basic functions with your phone.
Disclaimer:
I take no responsibility for any damage (if it occurs) to your phone by following the the steps mentioned below. Use it at your own risk!!! You have been warned.
Prerequisites:
1. HTC Desire - Rooted
2. Clockworkmod recovery installed on your phone (my version is 3.0.0.5?)
3. Nandroid
4. Download and Install - Freeware: Easeus Partition Manager
5. A windows PC and HTC desire data cable.
Steps:
1. Create a full nandroid back up for your current ROM from Clockworkmod Recovery screen. [No Mybackup or Titanium Backup - Nandroid is Required]
Boot phone into Clockworkmod recovery -> backup/restore -> backup (takes a few minutes) will make a complete backup of you rom, stored in clockwordmod folder of your SD-card (folder named with date and time) [Thanks Papedo]
2. Connect your HTC desire to your PC via your data cable and save the whole "Clockworkmod" folder from your SD card to a folder in your PC. Save any other files which you may want to in that folder.
3. Safely Eject the SD card.
4. Turn off your phone.
5. Remove the Old SD Card and Insert the new one.
6. Boot phone into Clockworkmod recovery.
7. Now select the option - "Partitions Menu"
8. Select option - "mount USB storage"
9. Open Easeus Partition Manager.
10. Create two partitions on the SD *exactly* in this sequence (assuming you have a 16gb card - windows will show 14.98gb free):
a. Fat32 partition - Primary - 14gb
Method: Right click unallocated space on your SD card and select "Create" -
A create partition dialog will pop up - use the following values:
Create As: Primary
File System: Fat32
Partition Size: 13980
Hit: OK
b. Ext2/3 partition - Primary - 1 gb
Method: Right click unallocated space on your SD card and select "Create" -
A "Create Partition" dialog will pop up - use the following values:
Create As: Primary
File System: Ext2 or 3
Partition Size: 1000
Hit: OK
11. Your SD card partitions should look like this (see DISK 3):
{
"lightbox_close": "Close",
"lightbox_next": "Next",
"lightbox_previous": "Previous",
"lightbox_error": "The requested content cannot be loaded. Please try again later.",
"lightbox_start_slideshow": "Start slideshow",
"lightbox_stop_slideshow": "Stop slideshow",
"lightbox_full_screen": "Full screen",
"lightbox_thumbnails": "Thumbnails",
"lightbox_download": "Download",
"lightbox_share": "Share",
"lightbox_zoom": "Zoom",
"lightbox_new_window": "New window",
"lightbox_toggle_sidebar": "Toggle sidebar"
}
11. Hit Apply button which will appear on the left hand side.
11. Go to Windows Explorer to ensure that you can see and access the newly created FAT32 partition.
12. Once you are satisfied with the FAT32 partition go and copy paste all the files and folders from the backup of your OLD SD Card made on your PC to the new SD Card.
13. Once this process if finished reboot the phone into recovery.
14. Go to Nandroid - Select Restore. Choose the Backup you want to restore.
15. Nandroid will take sometime to check MD5 sum of the recovery image, be patient. If everything is OK, Nandroid will start restoring the image and will start copying files.
16. Once finished it will display "Restore Complete". Press the back button now, select "Reboot System Now".
Go Crazy!
Now you have a full functional new SD card with EXT 2 / 3 partition.

Thanks. Have a good day.
Hi celestialspring,
Nice explaining with details.. I have problem before kicking off.
i used unrevoked to root, have rom manager installed , clock work mod 2.5.0.7 i am using the latest leedroid rom.
How do i obtain a Nandroid back up to backup as u have required apart from titnanium and backup pro? I don't know how to get nandroid back up from. please advice. thanks a million.
Boot phone into Clockworkmod recovery -> backup/restore -> backup (takes a few minutes)
will make a complete backup of you rom, stored in clockwordmod folder of your SD-card (folder named with date and time)
I know that this is a Windows-only tutorial, and thanks for sharing.
However, when dealing with Android and its (advanced) aspects is always a good thing to have a Linux OS handy: in this case, having native access to the sdcard's ext partition, one can simply copy/paste its contents making the whole process a matter of seconds. Moreover, the gparted utility that ships with most Linux distributions can play the Easeus Partition Manager's role perfectly.

Personally, I wouldn't want to copy and paste the data within an ext partition. nandroid will do a better job of that i feel,
However, Gparted would definitely be my weapon of choice. In my professional experience, windows based partition managers have never been great at handling alien file systems
About the pratition softwares please also add information about GParted, Partition Wizard, etc.
Those are similar freewares just like the one posted.
EASEUS Partition Manager didn't do the trick for me, but Parted Magic did.

Easeus will work but you need to create the partitions exactly as mentioned in the tutorial. If you create the EXT3 partition before the FAT32 partition it won't work. I learnt it by trial and error
Perhaps the biggest advantage of using Easues is that one does not need to burn a CD and then boot from it. I hate booting off my current work envoirnment just to partition an sd card.
This was the quickest and easiest way I found which worked for me. People who are more tech savvy can use Gparted or whatever.

See reply above.
No need to reserve the last portion for linux swap? Just only two partition (FAT32 & EXT3)?
Great .... ! But i have one question...2GB for android .. is it possible ? Or 1gb is really enough ?

I am not quallified to answer that question. But in my day-to-day workings, I have no troubles after formatting the card as above.

2gb. I don't see any issues.
1 gb -- Yes, it is possible only if you want to run older versions of many ROMs. If you intend to run DHD ports then I don't recommened it.

Afternoon all.
My 4GB card is full. I'm running a rooted Desire, S-off with Amon-Ra recovery. My PC is running Linux. I want to swap to a bigger card. I'm fine with partioning the new card with G-Parted, and also cool with copying the data between FAT32 partitions.
I'm not so sure I know what I'm doing with the ext4 partition. Will Amon-Ra Nandroid backup and restore do the whole contents of the ext4 partition? So does the process go a bit like this:
nandroid backup
copy FAT32 partition to PC
partition new card
copy FAT 32 data from PC to new card
take the old card out and put the new one in
boot into recovery
nandroid restore
reboot
Have i got that right, or have I misunderstood something?
That's correct.

Just use 4ext recovery, waay better in every way and much more features. U can partition ur new sdard with it to (guide in my sig)
Using 4ext recovery to backup, simply go to
Backup/restore
Backup
Then copy "clockworkmod" folder to pc
Then once uv partitioned ur new sdcard, copy the clockworkmod folder back to new sdcard and in recovery go to
Backup/restore
Restore
Job done
CWM doesn't play with this phone, so I'm using Amon Ra
I just tried the process with Gparted as set out above, and it doesn't seem to have worked. Lots of apps are missing, I don't have the ext4 partition available, and no account details are loaded.
---------- Post added at 03:49 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:45 PM ----------
And I also can't boot into recovery - it just boots normally

Took the battery out, and put the old SD card back in and miracualously I can now get into recovery. Did a Nand resore but the screen is now flashing white every few seconds. What the hell?
