It was said that the problem in the states with those how hack the G1 to hero was the Apn setting. But I found out the the H on the Hero is HSDPA networks a 3.5g /4g network. By swiching the setting to 2g will give you all sms and mms in the US. the HSDPA network is not in the states as of yet but soon to come. if you call T-mobile they will tell you H mean for Home Network, right now it does. I hope this help those in the states.

I'm not sure this is a fix because there are still memory issues such as when your using the browser you don't receive some sms because the phone doesn't have enough memory to run both the browser and the messaging at the same time so it kills the message which is the cause of some sms not being received while you are using the internet on your phone
I thought that the H was a placeholder for the 3g on the hero rom because the g1 doesn't support HSDPA

No it the Mobile settings in the US we dont have 3.5g Or 4g the H is picking up some of the 3g but not all of it that is why we get only 70/80% of texts.

I maybe but when you go to setting and put it on 2g the H turn to E then you should be on Edge network is part of the 3G standard.

Geez, I thought this has been covered before. I was under the impression that it has been well established that even though it says H, we are getting 3G to T-Mobile.
Now, you're saying HSDPA is not in the US and not supported by our G1s, I guess our G1s are liars?

Yeah based on what you have there I did look this up just now in HSDPA there is a small amount of 3g coverage like 70% not a full 3g network so here in the US we don't yet have 3.5g and 4g speeds so its trying to pick up the small 3g coverage this may be a fix for that

You know, in order to receive sms/texts you don't need 3G or even EDGE
When it comes to MMS it does need that internet connection

the 3g and edge is the data network you need it to get the internet.
I don't think a rom can tell your phone to look for a wireless network it can't even detect. the "H" is just a placeholder for the 3G. The rom simply says H because it's under the impression that your 3G is HSPDA.

The g1 can detect and use HSDPA networks because it does have a small 3g part to it

I have big problem - my D2D show low signal and no 3G/HSDPA network
...low signal fixed by setting up from GSM/CDMA to GSM only
Here is compare between D2G and Milestone:
D2G:
2G Network CDMA 800 / 1900
GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network CDMA2000 1xEV-DO
Milestone:
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 2100
UMTS 850 / 1900 - American version
Vodafone CZ works on CDMA2000 - 1885-2200MHz
I do not know where is the problem
...after Hard Reset and re-activating internet works, but only in EDGE mode...no 3G/H.
...when is set Network Mode to GSM/UMTS and Network to Automatic, then 3G/H works, but low 2G signal for voice call .
Signal reading lower than actual is a known issue. Happens only in wcdma mode (3G) and does not actually affect call quality or data transfer rates. You can make perfectly clear call with no bars on antenna indicated at all without any drops or whatever.
If you actually check status, you will notice signal level not different from other phones or of same phone in GSM mode while reading 4 bars.
Hopefully Motorola will release radio firmware update to address this (and few other, much more annoying issues D2G has).
Any fix for this phone yet?

Treizy, get yourself new sim card - get one of these new microsims that are for the ipads/phones - Since I changed mine, connection stability has vastly improved.
Thanks leobg for the quick reply and the advice.
I will check out a Rogers store and see if the micro-sim improves the quality of the connection. I'll post back with results.
Phone will still tell you you have 1-2 bars only, but that's a bug in the indicator, it will work pretty much everywhere other phones work. This bug only happens in 3G mode. If in GSM mode, signal readout is displayed properly on the notification bar. MicroSIM will not change that.
Yea I've heard that its a bug with the bars, but my phone will completely lose signal in areas were I should have signal or had signal before. For example, I will be sitting at work with 2 or 3 bars at H, then later on it will have no signal. Can't wait for the galaxy s2 lol...

The other one is 2.4.330 which is the december 2010 (only) update Motorola/Verizon released for this phone. It addresses some bugs primarily related to CDMA (nothing for GSM) but more importantly provides increased battery life, which is noticeable - 20-25% better.
From 2.4.29 you can 'check for updates' and you will receive the 2.4.330 patch OTA. Or you can flash the 2.4.330 SBF right away (saves time).
There are no other SBF's available for D2G beside those 2.
The droid 2 global is buggy as hell and Moto is too slow to go through red tape with providers to update. Anybody know if Moto is going to screw us North Americans again, like with Milestone 2? Only Latin America and China with the correct frequencies and a pain to try to buy, the Milestone 3 better come out in both variants properly. The Milestone 1 only became accessible here because Telus ordered it and it was easy to unlock for the other networks.
Milestone series itself is supposed to be the European/Canadian version of the Droid. Why the US carriers prefer different GSM bands is something that completely evades me.
There are rumours that the Droid 3 will be Global right from the start, though.

I suppose I will have to buy a generic microsim adapter since there is no Roger or Fido in my country. I hope this fixes the flaky connectivity issue of the mobile network outside the US.
I am not sure if my carrier will want to sell me a microsim card if I don't buy the iphone4 from them.
Thank you.
Well I will be. I went and got a new SIM. It was for a Iphone 3G, regular size but the metal part same size as the microsim. Now I am also getting much better GSM reception, usually H with a signal in the 70's. I wonder what gives? A SIM only is a subscriber and memory card, whats it got to do with reception?
I read somewhere that a microsim was not just the same sim card but smaller, but also that it transfers data at a much higher rate and that is why the iphone4 uses it. Could this be true? If so, then everybody should use a microsim instead of a regular one.

Sir,
I want to buy Samsung I929 Galaxy SII Duos. It works with CDMA2000. I want to know whether I can root the ROM so that it can works with WCDMA?
i figure i would make a post since so many people are asking for me for instructions on this.
1. Set up a proper APN
go into settings > wireless & networks > mobile network settings > access point names, and delete everything there and set up 1 apn with these attributes:
Name: ATT
APN: Phone
Proxy: <Not set>
Port: <Not set>
Username: <Not set>
Password: <Not set>
Server: <Not set>
MMSC: mmsc.mobile.att.net
MMS proxy: proxy.mobile.att.net
MMS port: 80
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: <Not set>
APN type: default,mms,supl
APN protocol: IPv4
hit menu > save
setting the apn this way doesnt do much. it just ensures that you are NOT using att's proxy which will slow you down anyways. also never tether using a proxy, as att is allowed to snoop through your data and use it as a claim against you!
2. Disable GPRS/EDGE
something on the towerside makes your phone prefer sending data over the 2g edge network, which is how att throttles you. even if your notification bar says 3g/hspa/4g/hspa+ is available, you will be using edge to send your data. its easy enough to fix this though.
go into settings > wireless & networks > mobile networks > network preferences
it should be "GSM/WCDMA (preferred)" but change this to "WCDMA only"
please note: if you go into an area with 2g only, you will need to change your mobile network back to accepting GSM networks! since most of att's network is 2g, this might become necessary.
3. Make it stick with airplane mode!
go into settings > wireless & networks
check "Airplane mode" and then after being in airplane mode for 10-20 seconds, uncheck it.
be sure to run a speedtest before and after to make sure you are no longer being throttled!
these are the wordings for settings on cm7 which my phone is running. your phone may be slightly different. for example it my say "HSPA" instead of "WCDMA" but it should still hold true.
this is the exact same way tmobile throttles too, but they only start throttling when you hit 5gb down. att claims you will be throttled when you hit the "top 5% of your area" which is not a good policy because for me, that was 1.7gb. att also throttles all lines on an account. they are even throttling my little sister's iphone which used less than 100mb. very uncool att! i have yet to figure out a way around this on the iphone...

If you were getting 5 down, you weren't being throttled. If and when it happens, you'll know. You can read up on network selection as to why your speeds increased.

Hi guys!
I bought my Sensation from Vodafone, Italy. It was unlocked, but branded. The problem is, Im using the phone in Romania and neither before, nor after debranding it, I am not able to receive 3G signal. Please help!
Have you checked you have the APN's for your mobile network?
Thanls 4 answering dude!
I don't have a data plan, but I know that 3G signal should be displayed regardless of this. I have debranded it and installed this stock ROM: RUU_Pyramid_HTC_Europe_1.45.401.2_Radio_10.56.9035.00U_10.14.9035.01_M_release_208857_signed
Does that U I have bolded has anything to do with the signal?
No, I don't think so. You should get 3G regardless of what radio version you have.
Check you have the correct APN set up via this: http://www.htc.com/help/uk/howto_iframe.aspx?id=52432&type=1&p_id=399
It should be something like Vodafone PAYG WAP or T-Mobile Contract WAP.
I don't have a data plan. It should still display 3G, event without a data plan, right? What could it be?
I assume you have a SIM card inserted? If so, what network is the SIM card?
What network? Like, what provider? Cosmote Romania.
And my HTC is a Z710e model.

Yep, that. You need an APN to connect to the 3G network.
Please try follow these instructions and then reboot:
- Press Main
- Select Settings

- Select Access point Names
- Delete all APN's in this section.
- Press Menu
- Press New APN

I'm not sure if it would have helped, cause in order to connect to 3G I don't only need to set my phone, but to be allowed to use the network, too, which is done by the provider.
My other phone didn';t need an APN in order to receive and display the 3G sign.
Incorrect settings...
Maybe I did something wrong, assuming that I don't need to have activated a data plan.
Ididn't really understand the last line "Enter the follow settings one for General Data . The other for MMS". Where do I make this modifications. I have created an access point as in your example, but how about the MMS one?
Thanks for helping dude, I really appreciate this!
Bottom line: without a valid APN, the phone isn't able to connect on 3G (like voice and video call?)
D F said:
I'm not sure if it would have helped, cause in order to connect to 3G I don't only need to set my phone, but to be allowed to use the network, too, which is done by the provider.
My other phone didn';t need an APN in order to receive and display the 3G sign.
Incorrect settings...
Maybe I did something wrong, assuming that I don't need to have activated a data plan.

I see!
The instructions were taken off this website: http://www.unlockit.co.nz/mobilesettings/settings.php?id=153
I didn't think you'd need the MMS settings so didn't quote them.
Without 3G you should still be able to get voice calls and texts but no Mobile Internet.
If the APN didn't work I'm not sure what the problem is to be honest. Usually when people report 3G not working it is just an APN that needs tweaking.
I see.
Well, my question was: Must I have a data plan for 3G signal on HTC Sensation?
I can call and text, but I was wonderring if I could initiate a Vido call too.

No, you shouldn't need a data plan for 3G signal.
You should be able to Video call over Wi-Fi but not over 3G.
Then, that means I have a problem, or I only need to create a valid APN?
Sry 4 bothering dude, but this is my first Android phone...

With and without 3g.
If your 3g network is turned off, because you don't have internet plan, 3 g icon is not showing up. Only signal bars.

You mean that, even if I choose WCDMA only, but don't have a data plan, my phone won't receive 3G? Is that it?

If you turn mobile network On , 3g icon will appear, otherwise on his place is nothing. 3g is for internet only I mean E,G,3G and H. They show you how strong is your internet connection on the moment.

Hey there . On a site i found different APN to create:
Cosmote
Hope it helps.
Guys, thanks for everything, but I managed somehow to find the answer by myself.
It seems that my phone was connected on 3G, but the 3G icon only appears when data transfer is made. If there is no data transfer involved, the phone still connects to 3G, when this network is available, but the 3G icon is not displayed.
If you want to see what kind of network is in your area, just go in dual mode network ( Settings> Wireless & Networks> Mobile network and from the Network menu, choose GSM.WCDMA auto, which is the default setting anyway) and then check it in Settings> About Phone> Network> Mobile Network Type. Here, you should be able to see HSDPA or EDGE, or whatever.
That's all. Cheers!
I've noticed at times my phone will lose signal but it won't show on the status bar. For example, see below:

it says I have a 1 bar connection but I wasn't receiving any calls (i was testing out google voice from my gmail). I went to the settings and saw that it was trying to connect to the network.
anybody else have this issue or have a solution?

I'm having the same issue, and I know my phone is provisioned correctly (i worked for att until a couple weeks ago). I don't know of a fix yet, but I've noticed it only seems to happen when I'm coming out of an extremely poor service area.

I posted similar issues in the king cobra thread.
I have massive signal data drops. Ive even had to delete my apns, reboot and manually add them to restore.
Its becoming a real pita. Never had the problem on stock. 1.73. Might roll back to test.

I was having the same issue.. until I did a factory data reset and installed the latest CleanROM Standard. Everything works well now with no data drops
I have the same issue. I've had 2 phones swapped out because of it but it's done it on every single one. If I'm inside my work where I have issues with getting a signal and then go outside the phone will show I have full signal in the status bar but I wont be able to make/receive phone calls or send/receive text messages. The only way to fix it is toggle airplane mode or reboot the phone. Drives me CRAZY!!!!

Will try this today and post back. I'm just happy I'm not the only member of the club.
If the issue is software related Im sure a fix will be along. If its hardware there will be a recall I hope. Rogers is notorious for refurbished replacements.
1.88 radio and kernel fixes this. I also returned a phone because of it. New one still did it untill I ran the 1.88 ruu and changed APN. You probably don't need to run ruu but you should install the 1.88 radio and kernel. This will fix the mobile data issues, dropped calls and not being able to call out with full bars. The APN for AT&T is on page 4 or 5 of the 1.88 thread. Ill locate it and post back.
Ok this is for ATT. I'm Sure Rogers is easy enough to find.

I'm confused, why do you need to manually create another APN setting? Those you listed are the default on mine.

Just add in the different things under "APN Type" they make a difference.

If it is correct then you do not need to change. I'm not sure but they could be updated by your rom developer. When installing the 1.88 ruu only, the apn had to always be updated. If anyone is still having connection issues verify you are on 1.88 kernel and radio. Just because a custom rom says 1.88 base that normally doesn't include kernel and radio. Both ate available for flashing in dev section.

There is nothing different. That is exactly the same as what is already listed on my AT&T phone.
Edit: didn't see your post above. Maybe cleanrom automatically fixes it. Who knows.

Having the same issue.
I have to reboot my phone for it to work. On the stick 1.73 I never had this problem.

Not sure if it's a problem with the radio, but after installing 1.88 kernel, it definitely fixed a similar issue that I had, which was that LTE was not restoring after losing signal.
How can I only use 3g and turn off lte?
Is there different apn settings?
I am rooted, bl unlocked and running clean Rom.
Thank you.

the option to choose a preferred network mode is not available on the at&t one x. I have also tried using other apns but it still stays on LTE. Furthermore, I have also tried dialing *#*#4636#*#* to go to more settings, and it still wont let me change the prefferred network. stupid AT&T! I believe there is a GSM patch available on the development section for LTE toggle, but it is said that it doesn't work on at&t. I did not try that patch so I don't know for sure if it really doesnt work. Is that GSM patch the only way? thanks..

Good luck! :good:
Now of course AT&T disabled this option, but here's a workaround:
go to Settings>Mobile Network>Access Point Names
Click the Menu button, and select "New APN"
Enter the following:
Name: Media Net (name doesn't really matter, as long as its different from the original APN)
APN: wap.cingular
Proxy: Not set
Port: Not set
Username: [email protected]
Password: Not set
Server: Not set
MMSC: http://mmsc.cingular.com
MMS proxy: wireless.cingular.com
MMS Port: 80
MMS Protocol: WAP 2.0
MCC: 310
MNC: 410
Authentication type: Not set
APN type: default, supl, mms (no spaces after each comma)
Bearer: Unspecified
After entering the values, hit Menu again, and select "Save". Now go back, and you should see your "new" APN listed along with the "original" one (should be AT&T PTA). Just select the new APN, and hit back or home. You will see the 4G LTE icon disappear, and you will lose data for a minute or so (if you use the browser, it will give a no connection error). Then you should see the "4G" icon come up (no LTE), and you should have your data connection back.
Like I said, I'm still testing this out. Try it out, and let me know if it works for you. You should probably try sending and receiving MMS, just to make sure those work (I tested by sending a photo to myself, and seems to work fine). The wrong APN info can sometimes mess up MMS, but if that works, and other data works, you should be good to go.
I'm in a LTE market, and LTE is actually one of the reasons I bought this phone. So I actually intend to keep LTE on for the most part. But it would be nice to be able to shut if off if in a fringe LTE reception area, which may kill the battery quickly and/or cause connection problems. Or possibly save some battery if in a non-LTE market.

Tag, this looks very useful for some of us who are having battery issues in LTE areas when losing/regaining signal (i.e. subway ride).

It worked for me! Thanks!
(Note: After I followed those instructions, I went into airplane mode, then turned airplane mode off, and then waited several seconds. Then the LTE label up top went away. Not sure if this was necessary.)
EDIT: I'm on the latest official AT&T/HTC ROM w/o rooting or unlocking: 2.20.502.7 710RD

FYI, I subsequently found out that the method I previously posted of adding the non-LTE APN apparently does not completely turn off the LTE radio. Somebody commented that it will still seek for an LTE signal. But you may get some battery drain benefit, anyway.
oh man thank you for this tip! I'm in Houston, bought the phone in town where I work, was getting 16.5 mbps down. So happy. Got out to my house in the suburbs and was getting 600kbps and couldnt find a way to shut off LTE. The 2.5mbps I'm getting when I switch access points isn't amazing by any stretch, but at least it'll be usable until ATT decides to expand a little bit. I love xda.

Well, I managed to piss off AT&T by using more than 5GB on my "unlimited" (Horse sh!t) data plan to watch Netflix on my phone, and they sent me their hate-texts and started throttling my LTE speeds...
So, using the Ookla Speed Test app for Android, I ran several tests and came up with download speeds ranging about 0.51Mbps to 0.61Mbps. Then I entered the settings outlined here and forced my One X to stop using the LTE radio, and ran more speed tests - BAM! Suddenly I'm getting download speeds of 1.53, 2.34, 2.35, and 2.52Mbps. I mean, still not super-fast, but around 200k/second or so is plenty fast enough to watch videos at decent quality on YouTube, and surf with general ease.
Seems like they're more interested specifically in throttling the high-bandwidth LTE signal, since regular 3G/4G is so much slower anyway (but still way faster than a throttled LTE connection). So if you run over your LTE data plan and get throttled, then run some Ookla speed tests, switch to 3G/4G, then run some more speed tests and you might be pleasantly surprised - can't guarantee this will work for everyone, but it sure helped me a lot.
FYI I'm in Honolulu, Hawaii in a 19th floor penthouse apartment, so I get 4-5 bars constantly; Your mileage may vary depending on your area.
Thanks for the post! Life-saver!
