I'm sure there are services, but those aren't standard text messages. They don't come from your phone number- rather, you send your message to a third party (the service) and their gateway sends it for you.
There are a lot of services that offer it for "free" (usually on a limited trial / adware basis), and a whole lot more that offer it for cheap, bulk rates (e.g. a cent or two a message).
A lot of them are available for Java- you can take your pick by googling "free java text message" or "free text message windows mobile."
I can't recommend any specific one, but note that they won't be text messages coming from your phone- and in some cases, you won't be able to receive replies. Lots of services are one-way or glitchy at best.

Just to let you know:
Betamax Voip services such as the one I am using, Voipdiscount does provide the service you are longing for. The SMS' sender number that shows on the receiver's phone IS your phone number.
There is a condition for this though: when you first register a mobile phone number (you only have to do this once), they automatically call you back and have you entering a code to make sure you are not faking someone else's phone number.
Once they've made sure you are the owner of this phone number, you can keep sending SMS from the internet and they just look like any SMS you've sent from your mobile phone.
Enjoy!

I searched on Google and tried all the websites but none of them shows anything about registration.........and some other sites even said Betamax is a fraud or something....
can u link me the proper page plz?

basically, that GOGII program contacts their systems for the purposes of sending a text message, if you were to get hold of the binary application, you could figure out their SMS server on the internet and then write your own program to send SMS messages - you could do it from a PC, PDA, whatever has internet.
anyone got a jailbroken iPhone handy?

i dont know if there is a wm version of icq, i used to txt ppl with icq all the time! they dont even have to have icq, u just put their # on a contact and use the sms service
most wireless providers have a web form for sms, tho usually restricted to ppl using that carrier and almost always annoying captcha ugh
hope this helps!

Betamax is not a fraud, I've been using their service for 3 years now, I would have noticed!
the proper link in my case is: www.voipdiscount.com but there are pleinty other sites belonging to betamax. Each has different discounts to call different countries. You should check them out and compare to know which one fits your needs best.

program for free SMS

Hey all,
for the PC, there are plenty of programs that you can use in order to send free SMSes. for example: ExtraSMS, ICQ and others.
Is there anything similar for the pocket pc?
Thanks a lot...
there are also sites who offer online versions of that you can try to see if you can get those to work in pIE or minimo or opera
yes crikee try that mate, device dependant
Actually, I was looking for some more convient. a program that i can link the messaging hardware button to it, thus making it very easy and more important, free...
Not sure if this helps, but......
In the UK, there are services that provide a free messaging service, kinda like SMS - take a look at http://www.tex2me.com or http://www.hotxt.co.uk
They provide a Java applet that you use to send messages to other users of the service, so there's no link to the real SMS text message application in WM....might not be what you were looking for?
Don't know of anything else; like another poster suggested, maybe your only option is to use a browser to access one of the online sites?
Mark.
think the problem is that sms is point to point cellphone network based
and gprs is the internet
somebody needs to act as gateway from the internet to the cellphone network
the cellphone the sms could be the "free" sms is being sendt to could be without gprs at all or simply offline
those free sites offer that gateway
and they most likely make money on the adds on their sites
so i'm not sure they would be happy to have people access their services without being exposed to their adds
and their interfaces are prob different from eachother so if a real application was made it would be different depending on what free sms network it would access

how to use WEB to SMS on my phone??

Ok heres my story , i have friends in Pakistan which i want to send sms's to every once in a while but since im in America international SMS's are pretty costly. I know if im sitting to my pc i can use those web to SMS sites like http://www.telenor.com.pk/services/webtosms.php but when im on my phone ( which is a touch pro and i have unlimited data so tht aint an issue) i cant load these sites as they use java and the app wont load on my phone.
My question is is there any way to get these kind of sites working , or any other way to send sms for free to pakistan ? specifically a telenor number?
Im open to any suggestions. Thanks.
Still looking for ideas please.
No one has any ideas??
If you can find out their provider's SMS email address, then you can email them and they'll receive it as a text.
For example, I'm with Bell Mobility, and their's is my 10-digit number followed by @txt.bellmobility.ca.
You can probably find it on the internet somewhere.

Well, to begin, you do not have to use specialized services to send SMS. If you use IM, most major ones (AIM, Messenger, etc) will let you send SMS too. Likewise, if you install AIM/Messenger on your phone, you can use them to send SMS to your friend too.
If I may, however, I would suggest you use Google Voice. See, GV has a neat trick which allows you to do international SMS with no extra charge (do not try it with international calling, though, as it will not work). Using Google Voice is much, much easier, doesn't require any extra programs, and work exactly like a regular SMS (so you can SMS through your phone, but send through GV instead of regular). Prior warning, though: Sending SMS through GV won't get you any extra international cost, but it will still cost you the regular SMS charge, so if you do not have texting, be careful.
I myself have not done it, but others have already, and they reported success: http://www.google.com/support/forum/p/voice/thread?tid=47d001a0c15f6f1e&hl=en
here in phil im using mjoy.com, i dont know if will work in ur country. sorry for my bad english.
OK i do have a GV account and have tried texting my frined with it but i dont think he gets the msgs so unfortunatly its a no go for me , from the link u posted it seems like a hit or miss kinda thing too.
That mjoy this looks intresting but its so slow still hoping there is some easy way

[Q] Manage Texts & Voicemails Online

I've been looking for a way to manage my phone data online - in real time.
What I'm basically looking for is a website or online tool that could act as a kind of gateway between my cell service provider (AT&T) and my device. I want to be able to go to a website and view my call history, listen to voicemails, read incoming and sent texts, manage contacts, etc. But I also want this data to be received by the phone too.
I've seen some sites out there that do some of what I'm looking for, like YouMail. This site lets you set up a kind of gateway where your voicemails are stored, but you will also receive them on the phone. If they could do that for text messages I'd sign up right now.
I'm familiar with MS MyPhone, but that's not real time and doesn't include voicemails.
So, is there a method/program/website I can use to get simultaneous copies of my phone's data? Kind of like one of those spy programs I guess...? But here's the issue - the phone I'd need this for is not a BlackBerry, iPhone, or WM. It's a LG Xenon.
Any ideas on this?

An SMS is an SMS. It doesn't matter which method is used to send it, the recipient will receive it on whatever phone they own. As mentioned above you can send it via IM, Website..etc.
Doesn't Skype have this ability?

What he's saying is that he wants a slice of the free cake I guess.
He wants to be able to send something (which costs the network operator money to send it to someone else) for free.
I guess there's nothing like that for you, sir.
I do know that certain network operators in my region (Singtel, Starhub of Singpaore and Maxis, Digi of Malaysia) allow customers to connect to their website and send a WebSMS from their own sites but there is a certain limit a day. However, this only applies to SMS sent to their customers who are on their communication network though.
maybe you can try textplus. Search for it on Market because the system doesn't allow me to post outside link 'cause i'm new user try it!
Im looking for something like text plus but in this app I can send a free sms only to usa and canada. Im looking for something what will work in UK

[POLL] Email-to-SMS

Hi all:
I am a developer for an app that forwards SMS (and other things) to an email address. Obviously it would be elegant to be able to reply to your SMS right from your email account, while the other side still sees your SMS in the normal way, and the app does exactly this.
But to get the reply back to the phone via email, we need the user to enter the email-to-SMS address as part of setup. You know, like [email protected] or @vtext.com. The app has a database for some countries and carriers but obviously its a drop in the bucket.
We are finding out that maybe not a lot of people know of such a feature on their phones, hence this poll! It'll help us try some other ideas, or implement this one differently.
Thanks!
PVS
PhoneLeash - free on Android Market
Rogers (in Canada) has this service.. but they charge us for it. So not many people actually have it.
Thanks to everyone who responded. As a result of the poll results, PhoneLeash now supports forwarding SMS (and missed calls, and location, and battery status) to another phone number via SMS. And replying back to these forwarded SMS' does not require an email-to-SMS feature. If you forward to a Google Voice number (or other PC-based SMS-capable services such as HeyWire, Pinger), you can use a PC, and enjoy a very nice feature set (see this review).
Thanks for the useful development for mobile users and internet users as well.
However, I'm already using this service with the help of third party i.e. TextMarketer.co.uk
Play (Poland) already has such a service. It is free for everyone. Polish speakers can check it here: http://www.blogplay.pl/2010/11/kopia-sms-na-email-beta/
