Problems rooting a Magic - myTouch 3G, Magic Android Development

Hey everyone.
I'm sorry if this has been covered anywhere else on the forums, I've been scanning all rooting threads with my eyes and not found anything about this particular problem. However if it has been covered, I'll admit I'm blind, or something
Anyways, I just got my HTC Magic a week ago, this is a unbranded Magic straight from HTC. They were just released in Norway last week.
I tried following the guide from Haykuro at http://android-dls.com/wiki/index.php?title=Magic_Rooting but ran into a problem when I try to perform step 11. My console says this:
Code:
|polden|illofics|:. sudo fastboot boot recovery-new.img
Password:
downloading 'boot.img'... OKAY
booting... OKAY
After this my device reboots and it just sits there at the HTC logo. And I'm wondering if this is what it's suppose to do? Am I supposed to try to do step 12 now? Or wait for it to actually boot? What can I try if it doesnt boot, as it sure seems like it wont after 10-15 minutes waiting?
Once again, sorry if I completely missed this point in a previous thread.
And thanks,
Mockillo

Can you post what the 5 lines at the top of the fastboot page are?
(Should be there on step 10)

You experienced? Did you find a solution?

You are using a recovery image with a kernel for PVT 32B while having a PVT 32A board, this is why it's stuck at boot....
You'll need to use a rooted recovery image with a kernel for PVT 32A!
Try the recovery image from daldroid : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523680

Aha, I can't seem to find any info on that on the rooting page at the wiki. Where would I go to find a image for my board? And is this usually mentioned with custom roms? Or will I run into this problem often?

Little guide but in danish.
Hi mockillo
I wrote this guide in danish, I think you can read it..
http://www.mobildebat.dk/showthread.php?t=153036
you must use the roms from daldroid, there the only ons that work, for now..

Tusen takk, ChrisB
And, this then means that I cant run any of the fancy Hero ROM's or Ion ROM's unless they specify my board or are made by Daldroid?

Thanks for the guide! I have now successfully rooted my phone.
I have one question though. Is there any way to get the multitouch hack on the scandianavian phones?

i am stuck at this
adb shell flash_image boot /sdcard/daldroid-recovery.img
It said Command Not Found (tried 2 system)

Check to make sure that you've added the android SDK to the system paths. Should be under Advanced System Settings>Environment Variables>System Variables. If the path hasn't been added adb isn't going to work.

Path already added to Environment Variables. still doesn't work ><
"
below is the error
/sbin/sh: flash_image: not found

HTC Magic Voda UK ROOT ACCESS Howto

To those with HTC Magic on Vodafone UK, with SPL 1.33.2005.
***Quick note - if you have tried to do Haykuro's root access method and found out that the reboot command didnt work, then keep reading as you would have installed SPL 1.33.2005 at the beggining of his method!
if you want to check then turn off your HTC Magc, and boot up fastboot (back + power) then just look at the top and see what it says! it should read like this:
SAPPIRE PVT 32A (or 32B) ENG S-OFF H
HBOOT-1.33.2005 (SAPP10000)
CPLD-10
RADIO-2.22.19.26I
certain parts of the fastboot stuff wont be identical to mine but as long as it says the same as what is in bold and underlined above, then you'll be all good!***
I had the same issues as you with my magic, such as following all of the instructions by haykuro then when it came to #reboot all I got was a uid error.
What I did after was hard reboot my device, downloaded the GoogleION (revision 2) ROM (ion-signed.zip) and installed it, I now have root access!
I am not finding any trouble with this rom, bluetooth, wifi, gps and accelerometer are working great and as for the audio problems, I haven't noticed any. This build is wildly fast and no laggy keyboard, no waiting between closing huge sms threads or closing heavy apps, you can have voice search and amazon mp3 also super user whitelist is also preinstalled.
ROM DOWNLOAD HERE: http://www.droiddeveloper.com/hrbuilds/ion-signed.zip
Installation instructions for ION:
*Follow the same proceedure as before with haycuro's method then when the REBOOT command fails, hard reboot, (take out battery from phone to turn off then put it back in and turn device on)
*reconnect phone to your computer and transfer the ion-signed.zip to your sdcard, either by mounting the card to the pc via the phone or by adb push method, just make sure you rename it 'update.zip'
*Enter revovery mode (home + power)
*make a nandroid backup
*select wipe all data
*select update from sdcard
*let setup complete then hit home + power to restart into GoogleION R2.
It is required to wipe your phone else you will get a bad install or things won't work and that would be bad!
Make sure to copy your nandroid backup to your pc, and then to a disc or memory stick as you will need this if you botch up any future updates or if you want to return to Vodagroans crappy ROM.
PM me if you want more info, or preferably, email me at [email protected]
Emaling me would get a faster response as google mail comes straight to our phones! Hope this helps and enjoy GoogleION!

I Did haykuro's on my Vodafone HTC magic AUS not UK (but maybe the same?)
at the end of the rooting, the reboot command, and I just turned the phone off and on.
After that, I was able to get the root # using adb sheel, but thru the terminal, i always got $.
I read somewhere else thaty I needed to install another su binary, so i followed that precedure and now it's ok.

just curious
my vodafone magic (uk) went fine through the rooting experience - my phone is a 32b
then I read a post that said there is a different root image for the 32A and the 32B, the image for the 32A is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=3972848&postcount=6
I wonder if this is the cause of the problem you mention
as its nice to be able to root and have the option of keeping the stock vodafone firmware
Hey,
i had problem rooting my Australian Vodafone magic too, but the problem is that the shell command could not find "reboot" command.
To fix this i have to manually create a symbolic link with reboot and than i could run the reboot.
is quite easy to fix if the you type "reboot" and an error appear saying unknow command.
just add the symbolic link to the same area as "sync" and it should work.
Cheers
Hello, i got a newbie question too. My phone specs are as follows:
- HBOOT-1.33.0004 (SAPP10000) : Sapphire PVT 32B SHIP S-ON G : CPLD-10 Radio 2.22.19.26I.
Has anyone got the same model and give pointers or instaructions how to root successfully?

Hi htcmagic, I actually have the same SAPL number and everything else is exactly the same as yours.
I got it from Vodafone UK. I was just going to post the same question here.
So, we both have a 32B model and SAPL 1.33.0004. Can anyone please recommend a good rooting guide for this phone? I am having a very hard time locating one.
Thanks a lot!

If you want only IME, then you can find chinese input at Market.
But I don't remember original rom had Chinese locale, if it has, you don't need to flash.
If you need to flash, however, you need to have your unit rooted.
I suggest 1click rooting method. It is very convenient and safe.
Actually, I had bricked my unit as you can see in my signature.
Please google 'flashrec', then you can find
Good luck!

I'm curious, how did you brick the HT-03A? I rooted many of mine without issue, just followed Haykuro's instructions using SAPPIMG/goldcard method.
thanks for the reply. I checked the market already. But i didnot get what I want.
The best thing I get now is the chinese input extracted from the official taiwan rom.
I want to flash to my HTC-03. But I dont now how.
I tried to create a goldcard, but it doesn't work. I am not sure the casued of the problem. But i guess it is caused by the environment (I am using windows 7).
Can anyone help me?

I have not tried the one-click method, but i hear its really simple, but i have rooted several phones useing RAmon's guide, and havent had any problems.
Your device (HT-03) is a 32B phone, when useing Ramon's steps, it will have you flash an spl that has a 32A radio, at the end he gives you steps to flash a 32B radio..

Trying to downgrade to 1.5 and getting 'Model ID Incorrect'

Hi all
Using instructions from here:
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod
To downgrade my Vodafone UK 32B Magic from 1.6 to 1.5 but after trying to HBOOT with the SAPPIMG.nbh provided, it gets so far then fails saying 'Model ID Incorrect'.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks in advance

Yes I did. And just to be certain i've just done it again and I get the same error. It looks like it is doing it, then it says something like 'Checking signature' then the error comes up.
Do you put the sappimg.nbh in root of sdcard? Not in folder.
Yes, it finds the file. It is the only file on my SD card, not in a folder. It asks if I want to continue. Blue progress bar appears in the top right of the screen, it goes all the way (takes about 1-2 mins) then the message 'Model ID Incorrect' appears.
Man... try this:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=547133
Hmmm. The reason I went to for http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php/Full_Update_Guide_-_MT3G/Magic_Firmware_to_CyanogenMod as a set of instructions is it was all on one page, looked fairly simple and it was recommended by someone with the same phone as me.
The other link looks complicated and I haven't got a clue what it does.
Maybe you need create a Goldcard, and the other link can help you make this.
I think. It´s a tip.
Anyone got any further on how to downgrade 1.6 to 1.5 on a Vodafone 32B Magic without using the Goldcard method?
I'm suffering the same problem, is this problem documented anywhere else and apart from the GoldCard method are there any other solutions?
Hey guys I'm new to this android hacking scene but I've finally managed to do it after doing near enough everything the wrong way lol
I am also using the vodafone 32b UK phone (well its my sisters really ) and I also used the same 'CyanogenMod' guide to do what I wanted (root/custom roms at last!)
Before i go any further though... are you all wanting to downgrade to simply install custom roms etc.. or is it for different reasons?
If its for different reasons then I have no idea on how to downgrade but for the other thing then I can probably help you out! I won't waste my time typing it out yet though if its not what is needed..
Hi, yes I want to downgrade so I can install custom ROMs.
I too had this problem with a Vodafone UK 32B Magic trying the "Downgrading from 1.6 TO 1.5 and Rooting for T-Mobile MT3G" method.
But when I tried the alternative "Non-TMobile 32B Magics" method at that link, in other words using the Android SDK & fastboot to boot the cm-recovery-1.4, that worked like a dream.
So I didn't need to go the goldcard route.
This is good news sandersw.
Where is the easiest step by step for the method you suggest?

[32A] Install official sense UI (3.05.401.3) without getting perfect SPL!

Alright, so HTC released the sense UI update to 32A in Europe some days ago. After searching around I figured how to flash it without getting stuck at perfect SPL. Therefore; I'd like to say that this is very little my own work. I only wrote everything I found here.
I'd like to thank these people/sites for learning me this:
Radix999, for his page in the wiki.
TheUnlockr, for fantastic guides about rooting.
cursordroid, for the correct order to flash radio/hboot.
vmaxada, for how to get rom.zip and rom1.zip.
Read everything before trying if you don't want to risk your phone.
You will need engineerings SPL before doing this. Means it won't revert the perfect one.
Disclaimer:
I'm not responsible for anything may happen to your phone during this update.
Only apply this on a sapphire 32A.
There's always a risk when flashing images to your phone, but if you follow the instructions, you should be fine.
This update will give you:
HBOOT-1.76.2007
RADIO-6.35.08.29
ROM version 3.05.401.3
Alright, so what you'll first need is the files. There's two ways to get these. First one, would be to download them (defiantly easiest). The second would be to fetch them from HTC's update file, I'll write this only for learning purposes, so if you're not interested in learning, do it the first way.
opinion 1
Download the files
I've collected everything for you in one file.
RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Europe_3.05.401.3_release_signed_NoDriver(eng spl).rar (mirror) password: for xda
Extract the files to somewhere you'll find them. Like C:\AndroidSDK\tools.
opinion 2
Fetching the files yourself
Doing it this way will take a lot longer than the first, but you'll learn more.
Here you'll need two files:
The official update file, RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Europe_305401 (mirror) and the SPL version, hboot-1.76.2007.
Copy the hboot-1.76.2007 to somewhere you'll find it, like C:\AndroidSDK\tools.
Boot your phone into fastboot mode (back+power) and connect it to your computer using USB. Run the file you downloaded, RUU_Sapphire_HTC_Europe_305401, and continue until it's done displaying "Confirming info about the Android phone" (I'm not sure if it's exactly the same displayed, but it should have the same meaning). When it's done with that, STOP, don't cancel, but don't do anything further.
Keep the update window open, and go to Start - Run, then type in %temp%. Search for "rom*.zip". You should get rom.zip and rom1.zip as results. Copy both the files to your desktop. Cancel the update.
Note: People have reported the files won't open with the built-in zip extractor in Windows, you'll might need WinRAR.
Open the two zip files. Extract the following files to the same place where you putted the hboot-1.76.2007:
Code:
boot.img
radio.img
recovery.img
system.img
userdata.img
After doing this you're done with getting the files.

Now you're done with most of the work, everything left is flashing.
Boot your phone to fastboot (back+power), and connect it to your computer. Open up terminal (cmd) and "cd it" to the directory where you have the system files.
Code:
cd C:\AndroidSDK\tools
Then type in this, to check your phone is connected.
Code:
fastboot devices
If you get a serial number, your phone is connected and you can proceed.
Now, type in the following and hit enter after every line:
Code:
fastboot flash radio radio.img
fastboot flash hboot hboot-1.76.2007.img
fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
fastboot erase system –w
fastboot reboot-bootloader
Now your phone should reboot into fastboot. Make sure you have HBOOT-1.76.2007 and RADIO-6.35.08.29. If you have that, you can type in the rest:
Code:
fastboot flash boot boot.img
fastboot flash system system.img
fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
fastboot reboot
Now your phone will reboot, and you'll have the official sence UI, but still engineerings SPL!
As you may have noticed, my English isn't perfect. If you see something wrong with my grammar please tell me what's wrong.
If you want a custom recovery, you'll have to install a Hero recovery. I recommend RA-hero-v1.5.2.
First of all this is old news already explained by Cursordroid who, i can see, you didnt not bother to thank! Trying to take credit for something that someone else did is not a good idea.
Secondly, your info is wrong. You will not end up with that version of the radio but with 6.35.08.29, nor is there rom2.zip but rom1.zip (at least for me it was that way). By flashing the new radio, people will be confined to using official 3.03/3.05 ROM, CursorSense, Cursor's t-mobile fender rom and some other roms (1-2 more exist currently) that i did not test. Otherwise a downgrade to the old radio is required! (e.g for running CM you need to downgrade the radio).
Did actually need another post on this topic??
The mirror I'm using is screwed at the moment, uploading takes longer then I expected.

Where did I try to take credits from him? I fixed the wrong info (sorry about that). Also, where did he explain this? I know he explained how to get this radio, SPL and Hero recovery. But nothing about the official sence ROM?

Where's the other topic about this?
He did some time ago make a toping regarding flashing 3.03 without getting stuck with the perfected spl. After making CursorSense however he eventually deleted his 3.03 thread.
You did not directly state that you were to be credited for this work but you did not thank him for doing it either. And all you did was "steal" (steal because you failed to thank the man) his method.

Alright. I'll thank him, but for what?
In other news, I still can't manage to upload the files (crappy outline I guess). I, however, added links to the same files. They are not uploaded by me though.
perfected spl
can we use this method if we already updated to a perfecter spl (1.76.0010)?
WTF
Hey dude!!!
You forgot to mention me under the thanks to, part that you don't even have!!
I hope you feel good about yourself!
and you searched? No! You asked me!
This is last time I'm helping you!!
Still... this is not for us who have already been stuck with perfected SPL...
Can I use these instructions if I have hboot-1.33.0010 (sapp10000)? or do I need to use goldcard to get 1.33.2010 first?
Thank you
Nope you will need eng spl to fastboot...
But he forgot to write anything about that!!
So you need the 2010 before you can even start...
Yeah, I thought so too...
Thanks

What recovery image did you use?
As far as I can tell you need the hero version for this rom/radio. So I'm thinking you used the sapphire version.

Any ideas whats going on with my unit? It seems to be crashing when writing the radio. I see the red bar go all the way to the top, and then it just sits there forever... any ideas?

Did you flash it in the correct order? If not, try flash back to a hboot that suits with your current radio. Then flash this radio.
In other news, I finally managed to upload the files myself.

Brick my Magic phone

Hi, my name is Young kyu Shin.
My phone does not enter fastboot mode(Volume down+power or back+power) and recovery mode(home+power).
How does it enter fastboot mode or recovery mode in this status?
I remember that it is 32B, S-OFF, SPL2005(?).
I think your phone is damaged as mine, if you do not have access to fastboot or the recovery is done for.
If you can send it to service after sale is your last hope
Once you are sure you are unable to get to fastboot or a recovery.. Your phone is bricked. Sorry. But you have to pay more attention to instructions rather then thinking you know what your doing.
How did this happen?
I managed to brick my Magic while updating radio...
I can not enter Fastboot (Back+End) or HBoot mode (Vol. down + End). I goes stright to Magic splash dscreen. But I can get in Blue LED Mode (Action + End).
Once was said in XDA forum, that there's hope in "blue led" mode, "But that's waaaay harder".
And then found some info about Serial -> USB connection and entering commands...
What shall I try ?

If you just have to enter commands and stuff, it shouldn't be way harder or anything (at least that's what I think, correct me if I'm wrong lol)
I believe that once you cant access fastboot, recovery or anything else, it's bricked
The only "hope" you have is to act dumb, bring it to your provider and get a new one.
Just curious, how did you end up bricking? I mean, how did you choose the wrong radio

I have originaly 32B Voda, but I used it as 32A (32A radio, recovery and ROM) for months now... Now I decided to go back 32B and try different ROM-s. Probably the mistke was to update the radio from (32A !) recovery and not from Fastboot. I don't know what I was thinking. probably too tired.
i have problems with my magic too.
i cant go to recovery image.
but.. i can go to fastboot mode. and my phone just stuck on HTC MAGIC logo.
what should i do now..

You need this ROM: http://www.multiupload.com/XQEH9NVGY7
You can simply run it, i think that you made goldcard already.
If your phone will be work after flashing, you can use this instruction to get root and other things in first post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=627384
any body help?
sorry for the previous post.
im trying..
i get Customer ID Error
but.. yes, i did GoldCard before this.
what should i do now?

You must make Goldcard properly. It avoids this error)

You must create goldcard. May be on friends phone, maybe on computer with OS Ubuntu/Linux and usb-cardreader inside
Oh... another thing. What phone do you have?
http://service.htceurope.com/htcdistributor/Default.aspx
Post Part Description only
May be there is a ROM, that you can apply without goldcard
i have SAPPHIRE-C9
btw.. what is the Reset button about?
before i get this SPL, i did goldcard already. and its works properly. thats why i get SPL2007.
so now, to update to a new ROM, i have to create a new goldcard once again?
after i did goldcard in my friend's hero, i still get Customer ID error.
how can i pass this?
