Housekeeping:
Back everything up. This means run some sort of data backup if you want to keep your settings
You may also want to run a nandroid backup in recovery (if all else fails, you can restore it)

You MUST have at least 256MB EXT

Copy the update to the SD card (rename if using pre-1.4 recovery)
Boot into recovery mode (Home and Power)
Launch the Console and press Enter

rm system/sd/dalvik-cache/* (if dalvik to sd was done)
reboot (Immediately press the Home key again)

After going through initial setup open console

(if it gives any issues, you may need to run this first:

and that will make system rewritable)
After this has completed, reboot the phone normally.

The attatchments to this post are the Free Version of Hero Update and a Hero themed Chomp. There is also a link to a Hero Optimized Userinit.sh with User.conf file set. It has options to set SMS priority to urgent (for older builds), perform and maintain dalvik2sd and perform (cannot be maintained) data2sd upon boot. You can also configure cpu and swap options by editing the User.conf file to your liking. There are also the modified LED commands for text messaging (will be building from this).

Yeah, but it assumes you will apps to sd so I put back a lot that was removed, just as apps instead of system components.
Now if I apps2sd, Rosie and the core apps will stay on the actual phone, correct? Also, what Apps2sd method would you recommend my friend?

If you're on ext2 I recommend doing 2 with the package as is. If you're on ext3, flash the other boot and do autolucid, or 1. JAC's boot doesn't support ext3 very well, but soon I will get it all merged down.
you keep the launcher and rosie? and this doesnt have what manup did does it? and weather?

This does have manups mods because I liked launcher and yes unionfs does work, although if it keeps looping on the partition let me know. It did on mine but I have ext3. I think they put the scriipt in the wrong place but I need verification before I change the update.
Just to extra clarify things, all I do is install Apps2sdV2, and click move apps, and then move cache?
(if I'm on EXT2?)

Alright, and you mean through recovery, not fastboot correct? Also, would you recommend a wipe before the flash, and a fresh format of the Ext2 partition if you were using APPS2SD before?

Please use Cyanogen's recovery image!
Make sure you have a partitioned SD card with a FAT32 partition and a EXT3 partition. (EXT2 is supported also) If you do not this ROM will install but you will have little space left due to APPS2SD not running. I personally like the clean slate location for Hero and then i use the widgets i need if any.
When I install I check the ext filesystems first, if it tells you to go to console to manually check do it! After I've repaired the EXT partition or if it didn't need repair I will now wipe and then apply the update and reboot.
A walkthrough by forum member sxfx is posted one post below for install.
ALSO run as few widgets as possible folks!

I created this thread cause in the JACHero thread on at least every page everyone asks how to install it, what am I doing wrong, and why is it broken.
So let me give you step by steps of what exactly I have done for me and others to run Hero with out a problem. I will also create a thread with step by step on how to use Ubuntu Linux Live distro to partition your card.
Things you will need to make this work.
Your Brain
G1 Phone
SD Card reader
And the files I included in this thread.
My phone right now is running.
JACHero 2.3
NEW SPL
cyanogens recovery 1.2
8gb class 6sd with Swapper(Swap file on ext2 sd)
setCPU slightly overclock.
Results.
Ever since I did my new Buttons, and the SPL I included in this write up, I have not had one problem flashing any hero rom at all on my phone, nor did I ever have problem actually running hero roms.
So here goes.
First before you partition your card or do anything make sure your card is at least portioned to fat32, don't worry about any other partitions yet.
OK once you do that go ahead and take the radio zip file I am including in this thread and flash it on your phone.
But first make sure you don't already have new radio installed which is 2.22.19.26I THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT. To check what radio you have, power off your phone, and power it on while holding the camera button.
If you do have new radio you can continue on to flashing the new SPL.
Flashing your SPL. (PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE THE NEW BUTTONS INSTALLED)
Ok this is where it might get a little tricky, and you might require a SD card reader I know I did and frankly I think this is the best way to do it and I recommend every time you do put a new update on your sd card to update your phone do it through a card reader.
Now after you flash your SPL you might or I should say more then likely will get stuck at the T-Mobile G1 screen, this also might happen after new radio flash in the previous step. If this is the case do not freak out it's normal and your phone is not bricked, but this is why having a sd card reader is important.
Ok so Here is what you do after you have flashed new Radio and SPL(Note:The steps on running Linux live distro and using it to partition your card is coming up). Boot up Live distro of Ubuntu, when its done booting, go ahead and go into the partitioning program while your sd card is hooked up in the computer.
Go ahead and set up two partitions at this time. One EXT3, and of course the other one Fat32. Your ext3 partition doesn't have to be all that big. I actually have mine set up to 512.
Once you are done creating partitions, go ahead and put the latest JACHero on the FAT32 portion and flash away (don't forget to rename to update.zip).
At this point if you follow all of these steps there is no way possible that your phone should not boot right into the system to run the initial setup.
These steps pretty much walk you through steps as if you were starting with a phone that has completly nothing on it.
Also the first boot up after flashing the new ROM, might take a few mins at the HTC screen.
Once your phone loads up and you go through the setup process go ahead and run swapper, it should be an APP that's already pre-installed.
Once you run swapper go into the setting and change the location of your swap file from /sdcard/swapfile.swp to /system/sd/swap.swp
Here is the reason why. The default location is your FAT32 partition. If you all of a sudden mount your phone to the computer with the swap file running on FAT32 you will corrupt your sd card, and then you will have to wipe and reinstall everything.
If you set the location of your swap file on /system/sd/ that's actually your ext2/3 partition and never gets mounted and you never have to turn swapper off.
Well I hope this helps some of you out. I will be writing the walk through on loading up live distro of Linux and partitioning your card sometime today.
I have used this method on a couple different phones and it has worked each time. Also I really recommend installing cyanogens recovery 1.2, as its an excellent way of making a back up of your phone and doing future flashing.
If there is anything anyone thinks that could be done better feel free to post in here.
Remember different people have different ways. I have posted this way cause it has worked for me on my phone and two other phones I setup, and each time there was no hicups.

Yeep I was running into the same problem. It wasn't working for me in upper case either. It started working once I did it as
su <enter>
chmod 777 /data/app <enter>
exit <enter>
exit <enter>
I think it should be noted on the first pase that chmod 777 should be in lowercase.

Okay so 1.4 is out now. He says Apps2Sd is included. I've never used Apps2sd and really don't know how to. So do I have to do anything with the 1.4 build to move it onto my sd card or will it automatically do it for me?

To make sure it is mounted go to the Terminal and type df, you should see
system/sd with your partitions size attributes etc
EXT3 support is next on the list.

Perfect thanks! Is this the only difference in 1.4? So I have to create the partition myself first correct? I thought Apps2sd created the partition for me. Oh well let me go create the partitions lol.
PS: the CHMOD command doesnt seem to work in upper case. Lower case only.
So will this new Rom with the app2sd app move everything but leave rosie.apk & launcher on the phone memory? Or is there something else that needs to be done?

i've chmod 777'd the hell outta my system/app folder and I still can't download apps. I've run the command from terminal on phone from ADB Shell, from inside the folder, from the root, as root every possible way and I still can't download anything.
Would it make a difference if I had tried downloading from market before applying commands?
I did a lot of testing and left all the files needed to keep this ROM stable and FAST under /data/app_s
Somethings work better under the app_s directory un-linked.
Everything else is under /data/app like a normal ROM so normal APPS2SD methods work. Since Marcus already has the app up I just included it...its only 18kb anyways.

Here is a question. Everyone is head over heels about using ext3 which is understandable. But why when i create and use an ext3 partition, why does everything running from my sd slow down by far?
i have 2 partitions on my sd ones an ext2 ones ext3 if i switch my link to m ext partition everything is fine.. if i switch it to my ext3 it gets about .5x slower

Is anyone else having trouble getting wifi turned on? I can actually use the Wifi tether app, but just trying to turn it on myself, it fails.

Does this use ext2 or ext3? I've used Cyanogen's rom so I have an ext3 partition, and don't feel like redoing it cause I'm lazy

not using the same thing as haykuro did and removed all of the widgets and added some back into it, basically you have to add them in if you want them
it has all the wigets in it i cant seem to make paid apps work

the thing that really sucks is some apps need other apps to run as you know so when people are moving over stuff might not move over everything they need only ran into that so far with a couple of things and those are the things that were added anyways lol

I get the recovery program to run a shell script, this script looks at the size of mtdblock4 ( the 'cache' partition ) and then creates symbolic links based on what 'SPL' it has determined, then the rest of the ROM is flashed, the files follow the links and .. well its like someone sat down and thought about the best way to use the space
At some point I would like to look at getting that shell script generated so that it can very easy to apply to any rom.
Danger I do have to admit that the Danger version is a bit of a 'quick fix', around 20mb is idle on /system, I'll look at improving on that.
At the moment all the system apps are on data, but as app_IS, with a little bit of 'moving and re-linking' we can trigger a2sd to do its thing
Edit 2010-04-24: system apps are going to sd by default now
NoneDanger is as good as it can get on the G1, got a couple of mb free space on system, and that will likely improve as the 'bad apps' are weeded out
I currently have 37mb free on data, yeah I know for some reason people want this empty, why? its faster than sd
MT3G ok, so you don't have a keyboard , but space you have lots of space
The script will chop this 164mb rom in two and share it across /system and /cache leaving the 295mb /data partition free for dalvik-cache, user apps and setting/files

OK, this is a very early release, consider it Alpha, the ROM is Huge and as such it takes a good while for it to settle.
If you 'went in' a little early you will see FC's , and it will look real bad...
But trust me , its fine
Reboot by pressing call + end and then menu, and let it settle
One it gets settled in it actually does quite well, much better than I had hoped
and I have not done any tweaking yet, just got it to boot
Edit : 2010-04-24 - Its actually quite stable on a first boot now
But still give it a couple of minutes, and do the full sign in
( i.e. don't charge in to do a market sign in, never understood why that was needed )
Missing widgets?
probably 'logged in' a little too quick
if widgets seem to be missing, then
settings --> applications --> manage applications --> menu(key) --> filter --> all --> HTC sense --> clear data
should make them all available

Just a Kernel , so flash it last
A quick note on patching CacheHack ( or any ROM )
Just wanted to make a quick post on Patching this ROM, and any ROM for that matter
as stuff is on cache, and is in different places dependent on the SPL symlinks are are 'broken'
So, we fix them in the update script
mountall.sh

now, in your update-script the top line should read

assuming that mountall.sh is in the root of the zip
now, when the update-script runs the mountall.sh
all partitions get mounted, and if /system/csys directory exists it bind mounts /cache to it
All of the symlinks will now work
so , if your replacing a file in /system/lib the link will be followed
Danger its actually /system/lib/
NoneDanger and MT3G its /cache/system/lib ( or /system/csys/system/lib )
this also means you can easily do

I noticed I can't change scenes. Just does nothing-- is that me or a bug to be worked on? And the bloatware makes me think I bought an ATT phone all over again, lol. There's a lot of room for improvement. Just when I was getting bored with Legend, got a new toy to play with.

Hmm, hadn't thought of that
/system and /cache get wiped by the script, but I leave /data alone
it might get touchy about it with no wipe
One of the things I want to do is the deal with the whole wipe thing, I personally don't wipe, if it works , if not then I wipe
do i still have to flash the kernel from the other post on top of it?

This rom is based on CM 6.1 final.
Its been injected with the latest MIUI, during this process, many of the graphic features have been Ported.

How to install:
Start with a full wipe!
Flash it like any other rom.
Let it boot up, don't try to start to set it up till, at least, when the screen goes black.
If you get a LatinIME error Reboot and resume the setup from there, should go away.
On the SDcard you will find the adw launcher backup files, load them up, or make your own custom look. Bare in mind once you flash this rom, if you had other ADW back-ups on the sdcard root, they will be gone.
-Run fix_permissions first of all
-To configure the lowmemory killers run this: from ADB or Terminal:
a2sd lowmem-moderate|lowmem-optimum|lowmem-strict|lowmem-aggressive|lowmem-extreme|lowmem-ultimate|lowmem-default
-pick one of the options, im using lowmem-aggressive, looks pretty good

Tried installing, no LatinIME error but I'm getting fatal errors on com.android.phone. I'll reboot and see if that can fix anything. Tragically, if I can't get over this very large error, I may not be able to play.

Did you check out the recovery.log after install? anyway, im uploading another version with a autokernel included, for non Trout.
testing now, will give feedback. just had a random reboot..
EDIT: ok no reboots so far rom is fast responsive and stable! will use it a couple days.
I flashed it with no problems but the boot animation wont show...only the G1 screen stays

It is auto, unless ofc for some reason it cant mount your sdext partition. Well you just need to change the clock color, that bar is transparent because thats how it was in the MIUI rom.
@mahroze what radio& spl do you have ?
I can't get the swap to work automaticaly. Generally swap works, but after each reboot I must enable it and set swappiness.

tried out this ROM and seems to be working great. After a wipe and still get all my apps back from ext. I was actually expecting a ported MIUI framework but it was just a pimped out ADW Launcher.
Went back to MT3G AOSP 2.2.1 ROM. Getting all the stability that I need.

well, i didn't change anything in adw launcher(i simply think its the best launcher), so yea what MIUI you see here is from framework-res. I did try to mess with the launcher but for what ever reason he didn't like any theming, plus the other rom has a adw theme with miui icons, no point in making another

Unfortunately, no.
Installation
1. Flash a recovery image
2. Copy the .zip file to your MicroSD card and boot the phone into recovery mode (call+volume-up+power)
3. Choose "Flash zip from sdcard" and choose the zip you just copied.
4. Wipe data+cache before rebooting. You should wipe unless you are already on a Froyo ROM.
Swap:
To enable swap on partition 3 or partition 2 (it will check partition 3 first and if it doesn't exist it will try partition 2)
$ su
# sdswap.sh enable
$ su
# sdswap.sh disable
Compcache:
If you are using are already using a swap partition on your SD-card, then you most likely shouldn't enable compcache. But if you do not want to partition your SD-card then compcache can be a good alternative.

2) I'm currently running The Celestial Teapot at 652mhz, will this be noticeably slower considering it doesn't have overclock (does it?). What's the deal in regards to overclocking?
3) I can install this fine (flashing it) over Kalt Kaffe's TCT ROM (replacing it with this one) or do I have to somehow get TCT off first?
Forgive me if my questions are nooby, I always prefer to overask (woohoo new word) in regards to ROMs

1)This is @cas_xp's but modded.
2)I haven't tested yet. But the previous version wasn't as laggy. I'm going to try to bring OC in. To reduce lag.
3) You should probably wipe before coming to this ROM . I should probably put a short flashing guide in.

It will take a long time to boot for the first time. It is deodexed.

No, rom doesn't boot neither after 10 minutes. It is stuck on my Movistar initial splash screen.

Does this mean you haven't tested the rom at all and don't know if it works or merely that you haven't tested on the U8110 but have tested it on the U8100 only?
I assume the latter, but I'd rather double check

@syrenz I haven't tested it AT ALL. I don't have access to my phone at the moment. When I do I will test it.
Does the problem about wifi existing on cas_xp's ROM still exists?
I mean, automatical rebooting when stopping wifi..

Any bugs in his ROM should also be in here. If and when I correct them I will post.
Yeah current bugs are: wifi on reboot bug, laggy rom,d-pad click, calibration, its a pain, but overall nice try tahahawa i think once you can test by yourself you will improve it a lot.
