Another one bites the dust... - General Topics

I've had WM devices since I first bought a Casio PDA years ago. I went through a couple of those and then onto the first XDA and have been a big fan ever since.
Until now.
For the last 12 months, I've had a touch dual and the firmwares (custom and original) have just been awful. I've come to the conclusion that I don't actually like the interface anymore or the messing about just to use the bloody thing.
So, I've dumped it and dumped WM.
I've just got my Android G1 today and already, I'm an android convert. It just works. I love it!
Surely, someone at MS should be asking why the people on here and others think Microsoft have a couple of years catching up to do over Apple when they've been doing handheld mobile devices for 13 years and Apple have been doing it for just less than 2....
I've spent a small fortune on WM software (damn pocketgear and handango for making it easy to get instant gratification) but I don't regret leaving it all behind.
I'm going to delete my large archive of ROMs for my universal\hermes\touch\touch dual and all the hundreds of little CAB files I've collected over the years (and made! and not shed a single tear over any of them (maybe that's because I have backups on DVD but that's not the pont I'm trying to make ;-) And I'll be sticking all my "spare" phones on ebay soon
So, it's bye bye WinMo - I'd say it's been fun but there were far too many reboots involved to call it fun.....

But damn, that TouchHD looks tasty

Good Luck with the G1. I'm looking at getting the TP2 when it comes to the USA July 22nd and then selling my HD. There's a bunch of comparisons in the Rhodium forum...

Farewell fellas

Hey guys... I have to finally say goodbye. After a year of hanging around the forum, it is time for me to move on. My wife's Razr was almost trashed and I decided to sign a new contract with T-Mobile to get both of us new phones. I got a T-Mobile Shadow - yes, I'm addicted to Windows Mobile!
So for now my trusty old SDA will live life as a replacement phone. It's living with Nitro's great new ROM. Good luck to him, and to all the other users who are members of this forum.
People come and people go. Already there are a few new people who are proving themselves to be great additions to this group.
Remember, whatever you do, just don't brick your phone. That's the worst way of leaving this forum!
I will come around once in a while to snoop on things. Until then, farewell.
'til next time mate!
i hate when people go
It has been a pleasure having you bipinsen. Don't be a stranger.
Why, again, do you have to leave? You can still hang around and give and gain knowledge.
For the first time in almost ten years I'm driving a car that's not a Neon, and yet I still hang out on my Neon forum.
Stick around, homey - it's still Windows Mobile! And isn't the Shadow made by HTC, too?
Or are you just leaving the Tornado board because you're too good for us now...
Always people come and go. I know i will not go anywhere cause I have one SDA and one new Imate SP5, they both work great. Great job
I wish you a lot of fun with your new device

Any Further WM 6.5 News?

I'm considering jumping ship from my HD to iPhone. But in November I remember hearing that manufacturers were going to be receiving copies next month (this month, december).
So I took this to mean that we should probably be getting copies here on xda and over at ppcgeeks at least by feb but I was hoping sooner....I searched but didn't find much.
Anything more specific yet than "first half of 2009" or "q1 09" ??
I'm dying! If I jump to the fruit phone right as 6.5 comes out that would be pretty ridiculous, so I of course want to see what it has to offer first..(haven't really seen a lot of details on it).
If you search long enough you will always find a newer and even so much better mobile phone that freaks you out right after you bought your new device.
I thought the diamond was good - bad reviews. Then I thought the Touch Pro was good (think so) and then I heard about the Xperia X1 (good one) and then there is the Touch HD and the Wimax buddy. And that happened in how many months?
I don't think WinMo 6.5 will be so much of a revolution that the walls of the big apple building will collapse. Go and buy your iPhone, but don't come back crying in a few weeks and tell us about all the apps that don't exist / are not allowed to be sold in app store due to security restrictions.

Any word on a "NEW" htc x7510 or similar

Hi all,
I was wondering if HTC was coming out with a "newer/updated" version of the x7510 or something similar. I now it's a niche device so it's rare I come across anything like it. I don't mind waiting to spend the money on a newer version of the device instead of buying a used one on ebay.
Any help with this questions is greatly appreciated.
Thanks

This was supposed to be out about now but I haven't heard much lately:

Wow, depending on how this thing set up, it can be successfully marketed as a total Kindle, iPad, dell mini 5 killer. I hope its real!
Im sure looking also forward to the upcoming model, if it comes
the specs looks awesome, 1gig , 5mb camera and im looking to see
how the sdd size will be,.
let's hope and see what HTC will comes up..
still happy so far with the HTC X7510 which is a killer device.
Am pretty sure that we will not see any new models within the Advantage-series. Basing this on info from HTC since we work with them and we use 7500/7510 in our productionline where we install our own applications and sell to blue-lights...
But, I *HOPE* I'm wrong becasue I too want to see a new and improved Advantage.
I would love to know if this new device is coming to the UK in April as HTC told me just a month ago there would be no replacement for the X7510.
Is there anymore info on it yet?
Successor to HTC Advantage?

I personally think HTC may be missing an opportunity. With all the rave about the iPad, its critics point out the iPad's missing features and imperfections. When you look at what those critics would like to see (video-conference camera, etc), you get the feeling that they are actually describing something like Advantage x7510. HTC was ahead of its time when it released the x75xx series, and that was why they did not sell many units. Now the market has woken up to the realisation that something like the x75xx is really the ideal, practical business device. That is what the iPad tries to be - and all those other devices with giant screens. Several people who have seen me use the HTC x7510 at meetings have asked how they could get one. They feel disappointed when I tell them HTC don't make them any more! I have never seen any unit on sale on eBay. Why? No sane owner of an HTC Advantage would want to part with it!
Now is the time for HTC to release a re-born Advantage with:
Capacitive screen
1 GHz Snapdragon processor or similar
WVGA (480 x 800) resolution
A more secure cover for the battery/miniSD card/ SIMcard compartment
Improved camera (Not just megapixels, but really sharp pictures)
USB host
Bluetooth keyboard (optional)
I hope HTC is listening!
I agree - the good thing about the ipad is that it will launch a huge market in tablet like devices such as the Advantage. I was rather dreading the day I lost or damaged my Advantage, as it is so useful as a PDA/email/internet.
I agree - every time I use my Advantage, people comment. I think the problem was that HTC was not so well known when it brought out the Advantage, so it got forgotten by the market, plus, being honest, the Advantage does have its issues, such as the fact that it is memory strapped and is so sloooooow. It still gets commented on, and for many purposes, it is a useful alternative to laptop for up to a day out of the office.
A new one, better battery, capacitive screen, running Android, could be a winner, I completely agree.

It's really quiet in here.
Just Google for the Dell Mini 5 - a complete re-working of the Advantage concept, though without keyboard (but capacitive screen and onscreen keyboard mean this is not really necessary).
Looks really good.

if you look around this whole site, there is the odd forum devoted to devices running a little known OS called Android. I didn't realise that everyone here had to be signed up to Microsoft.
Seriously, with WM being consigned to the bin of history, we are all going to have to shop around. Android looks good to me, and it is developing fast. Unlike Windows Mobile. The Dell Mini 5 looks a worthy successor to the Advantage in just about every way IMHO.

It may be presumptuous to say that WM is "being consigned to the bin of history". It really depends on what you are looking for. I have read the tentative specifications of the Dell Mini 5. I would have loved to see it as "a worthy successor to the Advantage", but I really don't: With NO MS-Word or MS-Excel compatible editors (only viewers), it cannot replace my HTC Advantage. Until Google Apps includes real productivity tools, it cannot replace WM for me.

I didn't realise it didn't have document creation ability that is a very good point.
However, looking around at the developers, it really does seem like everyone is calling time on WM development - I wish it were not so, I should be able to keep my kit going for another year or so, but let's face it, it's time to side-grade.
I remember when Psion went out of business, I kept using my kit for a little while, but it soon became too difficult to keep it running. The world had moved on - exchange sync-ing rather than simple email for one thing. It's very sad, I have kept with WM since I ditched my Psion kit, I thought Microsoft would be a safe bet and I would never have to change, but they screwed up in a major way.
I think Dell's Mini 5 is the way to go - but it will be a little time before it is ready, that is all. The Advantage should keep going for a year or two.

Android and the future of WM
As I said earlier, it is all about what you are looking for. In my view, WM will remain for as long as MS-Office remains the dominant productivity tool in our offices, and as long as Google has not ported its web productivity tools into Android in a way that they can truly replace MS-Office. The true death knell for WM will be when I can use Google Docs on Android and can sync my Android device with MS-Exchange. Of course, for those only interested in social networking, these are not a consideration and the Android is good enough as it is.
I would not even talk about Apple's devices. They are great for their cool factor. But I do not see them as serious business tools.
Over time, if Microsoft refocuses on WM, it could survive many more years as a niche OS, for those who want their "office in the pocket", especially if Microsoft collaborates with the likes of HTC to blend the best of WM with the usability of Android.

Wil there be any more highend winmo devices?

Over the last few years it has become quite fashionable for people (especially alot of tech websites) to bash windows mobile even if they have very little experiance with it, more so since the iphone came on the scene. yet most people who play with my device (HD2 running NRG rom and maxsense) have very positive feedback. So although winmo is capable it seems it not very marketable
Thus no matter how good some of the projects at XDA have turned out winmo is on the way out, and android is on the way in.
But i dont feel im done with winmo yet, i have mustered alot of software since my 1st winmo device (HTC e200) and invested alot of time learning its intricacies, i dont yet feel ready to make the jump to a different OS when there still seems to be so much going on in the winmo world, but at the same time im eager for some new hardware.
But soon my contract will be up for renewal and there seems to be no more highend winmo devices insight, is the HD2 the last highend winmo device?
There is alot of hype surrounding the windows phone 7 but for me this seems too much like jumping on the Iphone bandwagon and the complete opposite of what i want from a device. Sure i like an easy to use interface, but comprimising functionality for it is too high a price.

[Q] Non-Touchscreen Smartphone

It finally happened - my HTC S740 was stolen a couple of days ago and I now have to decide what to do next: get a used one on eBay or find a worthy successor.
Is there a consensus what such a successor would look like? I remember a phrase by one of the wise men of this forum to the extent that "screens are not in the world to be touched" a view which I subscribe to wholeheartedly. So the new machine would have to be a non-touchscreen as well as have a retractable keyboard, just as the S740 does.
Much appreciate your ideas on this one!
Anybody? Or do I have to assume there are no machines like the S740 anymore
