OK, so I've been using a Kaiser/Tilt with Eclair on it for awhile. I've spent countless hours drooling after the Nexus One. When AT&T finally got the "Backflip" from Motorola, I just couldn't resist. I took the plunge.
I should've known better. I have plenty of AT&T horror stories, and this is the same carrier that wont allow you to tell your Java apps NOT to ask for permission more than once (making Opera mini a PITA but the only usable browser for non-smart-phones).
There is NO option to install applications from untrusted sources. This means anything on your SD card, downloaded from the web or over your wifi at home WILL NOT WORK. Naturally, you also cannot use the "su" command in terminal.
Motoblur is nice I guess, but the uninstallable AT&T paid apps, the limitations of 1.5 firmware (ie: no google navigator, no voice search) and the locked-to-yahoo-search-bar are enough to get me to say NO to any further AT&T abuse.
With the Kaiser's bloatware, they removed/hid apps from you so you wouldn't try to use them and replaced them with their crapware.
AT&T does not know the meaning of "open" and they do not understand Android. You are not buying an Android phone when you buy from AT&T.
You are buying a device LOCKED to a market with a smaller number of applications than the iPhone (I don't use Apple products either ) forced to use a lesser search engine for your most convenient option and subject to losing any application that was once on the market but then removed. You can't install your own apps or even test them on your device. Period.
Also on my first day of using it I got a number of "Force Close" messages including on the built-in applications (ie: Motorola's flavor of the desk clock).
It's decent hardware, it feels pretty zippy to me, but this is exactly why I WONT buy an iPhone.
Screw you, AT&T. I will make sure that everyone I know is properly informed about this crippled device that is nothing like the Android experience is supposed to (expected to!) be.

EDIT: I will add:
- Set "orientation" on this phone when you tilt it and somehow it gets stuck in one orientation or the other (who knows maybe this one is just me, not seen any other backflips) if you set it back to just when you open/close it it's fine again though
- The desk clock can't be launched manually and is tricky to get to appear trying to get the phone in that perfect angle to display it
- I don't have a separate camera on me right now to show you the menu but to back up with sources:

Don't buy this phone. Stay away from AT&T, stay away from Motorola (IMO or at least the motorola backflip).
This is pretty horrible.
I have two questions, though.
1) Can you take a screen cap of the Settings > Applications screen so we can see the lack of Unknown Sources option? That'd really help people see the validity of this issue.
2) I hope you have some kind of 30-day money-back guarantee when buying a handset from AT&T like Sprint offers. Otherwise, ouch =/
I haven't tried to install an apk from astro or anything, but i have pushed a few with ADB which seems to work fine. It kinda sucks, but I really hope that we can figure out root access soon! I wonder if Apple suddenly took over AT&T because this kind of behaviour is more common to them
... It's not only AT&T who manages to confuse their customers about an OSS... Don't forget who decided to lock down an open software system boot-loader for everyone *cough*Motorola*cough*

Someone more familiar than I needs to figure out the proper java system call to enable unknown/untrusted sources and then post on this thread the proper at command to execute it via CLI. You wouldn't even need root to do this.

Assuming the software running on the Backflip is the same software they released the source to on opensource.motorola.com, there may be hope of that. I'll dig into it when I get time.
Wow. I am surprised that this was picked up by Gizmodo. Do we have anyone corroborating this? Doesn't this somehow violate Google's terms of service?

Mine too! Just means to spend the couple extra hundred dollars and get an unlocked unbranded one.
I got the Backflip just because I am moving on from my jailbroken iPhone and I wanted something neat and shiny.
I can say that there is a lot of smack talk here, but give these guys a chance here to root the phone and get some things working on it.
It's been two days since the release and I can already say, that I like the phone a hell of a lot more today then I did on Sunday. I've been able to install untrusted sources using the Droid Explorer, a bit of a pain in the ass, but it's okay, considering that if I want Android, then this is the only way to go for now.
But I have faith in someone out there... Someone will figure this out.
I just hope it's within my 30 day return policy.
EDIT: I Installed "GDE" on my device and I am able to use the Google search widget... So that issue is sort of solved...
This may just be my unit but the A2DP doesn't work right, it starts playing music then begins to fast forward whatever you are watching or listening to. Did a hard reset, no luck. Looks like I already need a replacement lol.

Eh; fail on my part. It's mostly a cosmetic fix. I didn't actually test it, but when you click on it, it changes to "Yahoo".
So my bad on that one.
God, I hate Yahoo. Ever since that stupid ass cowboy did that commercial, it's ate away at my soul...

To think we were all worried about how Verizon was going to cripple android only to have ATT do it instead. At first I was amazed and then I realized that any android phone would have outshown their prized phone...oh well one more reason to love being on T-Mobile. ;-)

I was going to wait to see what AT&T was going to bring to the table, but I'm not holding my breath.
Btw, I noticed that AT&T trained to sell the Backflip pretty hard. Like, seriously, I was looking at phones today, and every other word out of the rep's mouth was that I should buy the Backflip. Thankfully I'm more informed than that. I walked out with an iPhone instead. (Don't grill me, I use a Touch Pro2, I just needed a good phone for my work line >_<)

I really do think though that this is going to end up to be a decent phone.
I know I am a little pro for that comment, just because I bought one. But lets look at every phone that ever comes out. There is always some sort of challenge that we have to overcome.
And; with all the threads I've been reading about this; it looks like it was BOTH AT&T and Motorola that are to blame for locking this phone down. ATT cause they don't want us to install from anything but an "App Store" and Motorola because they don't want their devices used for what "there were not intended to be used for," is the wording I've seen floating around the internet.
But in all seriousness. I am coming from an iPhone 3GS which I had jailbroken. So I am coming from a phone that I had everything and anything on to this, and I am, overall, happy with it. Although it's only been 5 days, I can say I don't think I'll change my mind in the next 25 days.
But that's just my two-cents.
Thought I'd share this with you guys. I recommend sending out a similar email so that they know that there are serious concerns about the phone. I did it online at the Contact Us page on the Samsung website.

man I just dont see this lag yall are talking about... Had the phone since day 1, no lag fix and its fast as my n1 on 2.2. about.. Wierd...
Also GPS does work, just not reliably all the time, some works fine, others not, others sometimes.. So saying it dont work is exadurating. I just dont want people that dont have one think that the GPS dont work. It does and I use it everyday without issue. No fixes or anything, mine and some others works...
2.2 froyo will be here soon. Hold your horses on and it will be here next month I will bet...
I didn't see the lag either for a while, but I see it in most of the Samsung native apps, like Messaging and the screen unlock.
GPS also used to work amazingly. It just stopped completely now for me.
It's good though that they acknowledged in the email that they were going to release a fix for it.

Yea, Well Im certain it will be fixed. The samsung epic 4g is rumored to have a working GPS (more testing needs done for me to believe it for sure) and if we have the same hardware gps wise as the Epic 4g we should definatly see a fix...

Long story short, I've been running the lag fix about a week, then borked my phone with another tweak and had to revert back to stock. HOLY COW was that thing slow... I never really knew any different until I had seen greener pastures
I will say I don't think the DEFAULT lag is worse than any other phone on the market. But it is capable of much, much faster.
Also you forgot to include the complaint that MMS doesn't work on EDGE, only 3G.

Which lag fix did you use? I saw several. I haven't rooted my device yet because I'm a little girl. I'm trying to gather as much info as possible first.

Well I did all my tweaks manually the first time. However when I borked and started over I used this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=751934
That will do all necessary tweaks at once. Just download the update.zip file to the root of your INTERNAL card, reboot into recovery mode (ask if you don't know how... easiest way is to use ADB), and select "reinstall packages" and you're done.
Just check the post I linked to, but it'll remove all the ATT crapware, remove the loud startup sounds, install root, block ads, etc.
After it's ran you then can go into the app it adds and run the lag fix... After you run that script it needs a reboot... And then you've got a lag fixed phone that runs twice as fast. ROM Manager, for instance, takes like a whole freaking minute it seems to open un-lag-fixed. Lag-fixed it takes several seconds max.

I'm happy with 2.1 right now... I mean the Captivate at 2.1 runs faster than anything else on the market, including the N1 2.2......
So I can live with 2.1 until Samsung releases 2.2
Once you see how much faster it is with the lag fix, you'll start to wonder how much faster 2.2 will be. The Captivate will be untouchable.
There is definitely significant lag on the stock firmware - most notably for me with the marketplace but s also for some other apps when they are loading data. I haven't applied any fixes yet as I'm waiting for a decent firmware update before I do too much with my phone.
JH2/3 are looking like good bets, but I would suspect that an official firmware is right around the corner given the few changes between JH2 and JH3.

Why wait? It takes 5 minutes to vastly improve the usability of your phone.
And worst comes to worst, you use the Odin3 one-click to restore it to stock. Seems pretty awesome. I'll probably be "super-rooting" tonight!
Also to note you should only be doing that super-rooting from stock to start with... It's the most reliable method anyway. You can try it from what you've got but- if there's issues you just need to do it from stock.

Yes, download ROM Manager but you need to be rooted first I think... So you can root your phone only (same process but it just does rooting: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=725555), download/install ROM Manager (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=734163). Then when you reboot into the ROM Manager recovery screen there's nandroid backup utility that'll back up everything.
If you like selective backups of stuff you can also use Titanium Backup (also requires root).

GPS does NOT work. It barely functions, so it does not work. Anybody that says it does is just trying fool themselves into thinking they didnt make a mistake. GPS absolutely does not work. Its been documented by numerous sources and tens of thousands (or more) vibrant and captivate users here in the US. For Christ's sake, even Samsung has admitted that it doesnt work. They've used incorrect drivers from Broadcom, so it can't possibly work.
Samsung may release Froyo to the carriers toward the end of next month, but it'll be quite a while before AT&T releases it to us. They have to go through and add all their crapware and remove any functionality that's in the stock rom that they can charge money for (this really pisses me off I REALLY, want that wifi hotspot functionality!!!) and they have to cripple the kernel and radio so there'll be no HSUPA.

We're about a month after release and have Vanilla Android 2.1 ROMs, so chill out. Have some patience, I'm sure we'll see them for 2.2 as well.

Its directed me to many places perfectly so it works, its just unreliable and not the best, hence needs to be optimized ...
now post a link where samsung admitted using incorrect drivers? I've never saw that...
After 6+ years with a Windows Smart Phone (1st MPX220) I see the platform is dead and I have to go elsewhere. I am thinking of going to the Captivate. I like the new BB also but I am not sure if I want a crack berry. I think the Captivate will be more fun to have in the long run.
The cheapest I can find the phone with a 2 extention and keeping my old plan is Best Buy for $149 plus a $30 one time credit to my account.
I am wondering how to get I get all my texts and info from my old phone to my new phone. I have used PPCPIMbackup when doing firmware updates to my phone to back up all my info. Does this work with Captivate also? I am not sure because of the different OS.
I have never had a phone with out a keypad. This will be new for me. I wish I could have a phone with one. I see having a nice slim phone will also be nice. I think the keyless pads is how all phones exept for BB will be very soon.
Does anyone have any good tips or information before I go over to this phone? I know going from a Windows phone to this is going to be very different.

I'm using the xda app so can't see your sig, what phone are you coming from? I've used winmo for about 2 yrs and love this phone. Not sure how to copy things over, seen alot of posts with problems. Best I've seen is manually enter em in google and sync that way. I just used my sim card. Didn't have a bunch of special contact info to copy.

I also migrated from the Epix... you will not be sorry. With regard to your question about transfering texts, generally anything is possible in Android, and a quick google search confirms this:

I gave up on my Epix. Were you one of the lucky ones?
The Captivate is a wonderful phone, if you don't mind waiting for a GPS fix.
My own experience: I was concerned about the lack of a physical keyboard, but found that swype makes things easy. However, I am more frustrated that I expected at the lack of really good business applications in android (I am waiting for Pocket Informant android, specifically). Also, if you use Outlook, you may have some frustration with syncing.
There is certainly no android phone to compare on ATT.

After ATT sent me my 4th or 5th phone I was doing better because it did not have the ID1 update. I kept on using firmware updates from this site to make the phone better. After the 6.5 update came out and the phone still was not right I gave up. GPS is still a issue but not like ID1. My texts and e-mail keep on crashing on it. I have not been able to update my hotmail via Live for over a week. Every time I close out of my texts it locks ups for about 20sec to a minute or two. I have finaly given up. Now my battery is only lasting about 2 days on standby. After about 1 hour long call I go though about 40% battery. I am just happy I can start doing a upgrade now.
I just hope the GPS fix comes soon for this new phone.

Yes, GPS is not fully functional at this point, but it appears that Samsung is working on correcting the problem. 2.2 is in the works, but no word yet on when it will be released for the Captivate... best estimates seem to shoot for 1-2 months from now.
The gps works well for me with the update. It just takes longer than what I was used to wth the iphone. I get a solid lock in 30 seconds.

Excuse me, *for some*, GPS is not fully functional.
For the most part the captivate is great. Just needs a little bit of tweaking here and there. Gps is pretty much b0rked at the moment. Til Samsung gives us an actual fix. Or we find one. Gps can lock somtimes but it will jump around a lot or lose the fix. Navigation wont work for the most part. Aside from that the phone captivate is a great choice.
OK so the GPS sounds about as good as my epix right now. I can not even get a GPS signal in the car unless I have it on the dash with nothing blocking it. If all it takes is 30 seconds to lock on I will be set. That is better then the Epix. What is up with Samsung and the GPS.

Nobody knows for sure. Some speculate it is hardware and won't be fixed. Most of us feel it is software. It supposedly works for some people, but those that can't get it to work are dubious that the ones that work are just not hitting the right circumstances for it to fail. It actually seems to be accurate a high percentage of the time, but when it is off, it is waaaaayyyyy off. Sometimes only for a few seconds. Very inconsistent.
Samsung has indicated it will be fixed in September. Not much time left for them on that commitment.
If they don't make it by then, there will be lots of whining and griping. I'll be doing that in my mind, but plan to refrain from doing so in the forum The GPS problem is probably the single largest issue that has caused a lot of threads, and several contentious posts.
It is a great phone. Hopefully the GPS issue will have true resolution very soon.
I switched from a moto Q. To a samsung jack, used a epix for a bit as well. Got this phone a few weeks ago and have not regretted it for a second. Android and win mobile 6.5 are not even close enough to compare.
Also swype beats out any virtual or physical keypad I have ever used.

I'd SERIOUSLY wait 2 months until the Windows Phone 7 devices are out. I was at MSFT this week and got to play with a dev model for a few minutes, it does seem pretty nice. It will all really depend on what apps are available.

My impression, personally, was that windows mobile seemed like it was as locked down as the iphone, but without all of the iphone's features and polish. In short, It seemed like the worst of both worlds. The only thing I that it has going for itself is the nice looking homescreens. That is just my initial impression though and I hope I'm wrong.
You can see my list of phones in my SIG and I know my thing when it comes to HTC and WinMo.... all those phones in that list, were me trying to find a device that ran...well.... the way my Captivate does. Even with fat thumbs I can still type on the software keyboard... I go back to my TP2 and I actually type slower. I just cant type without looking at the keyboard, one thing a software keyboard will never accomplish.
Ive been following WinMo for years, and I can tell you, this makes me never want to go back, even for WP7.

Ok I got the phone on the way home.
I am likeing it a lot all ready. I used Travel for the GPS app. That thing worked great. I hope maybe I got a good one. Before I did anything on the phone I did the software update. I am going to play with it for a little and see what else if great. I do love the voice activated things. That is great.

I came from a HTC Tilt, which had HORRIBLE GPS. I was able to get a great Froyo ROM in it and had a ton of time to play with it before I got the Captivate. The learning curve is very low for basic operation. It'll take a bit of research to get the rooting/sideloading etc down. Most everyone here is fantastic at helping out and I've gotten some excellent advice from people on how to mod my Captivate. Coming from a WinMo phone to this one, I HIGHLY doubt you'll be disappointed
Hey, guys. Hoping some of you experts can help me diagnose what's wrong with my Samsung Infuse. I bought it off Craigslist at the end of May, and the guy had the phone with the original screen protector on it, with the original case and all accessories, so I had no reason to believe it had any problems. He told me the phone was already rooted & unlocked, which I wanted since I signed up with Straight Talk. I used it for June & July and had a host of problems, so I put on the CM10 ROM last week to see if it helped. It didn't. Here are the problems I continuously encounter:
1. When going to unlock my phone with a pattern, once in awhile it won't detect my finger-presses. Sometimes nothing shows up at all, sometimes one of the dots will highlight as I pass over it, but it won't draw. Eventually the screen turns off, and I turn it on and try it again. Usually it ends up working.
2. The battery dies much quicker than I expect it should. I tried running JuiceDefender and not running JuiceDefender, and it doesn't seem to make a difference. Even without using my phone much for anything, even with the screen off, the battery will run out before the day is out. It's like if you were driving and had a hole in your tire... seems like some sort of a leak.
3. The cell radio seems flaky. Sometimes I won't get texts on time. A lot of the time I can't access any data, which is very important as I use Google Voice for lots of my texting, so I send a text and it won't go out. Loading web pages or reloading my email shows that it is a data problem.
Those are the primary problems, and I suspect that somehow they are all related. I'm not sure if the Craigslist guy sold me a lemon, or there is some other problem that came up. I've tried multiple ROM's and disabling every app I can think of. Can anyone think of anything that would cause these problems & any way to fix it? Or do I just own a broke phone that I have to throw in the garbage?

first, i wasnt aware that you could do any of this on a straight talk phone, but i could be wrong. i am not the "expert" you may be looking or hoping for, though one i am sure will show up.
second, i think the response you may get is......did you go to JB straight from Gingerbread??? that will cause HUGE problems.
dd you read OP and follow to a tee??? again HUUUUGGEE problems.
the "never fail" here.....READ READ READ. feel confident as to what you are doing and follow steps one at a time. UNDERSTAND steps one at a time.
first thing that never hurts.....return to stock and start from scratch.

follow all directions TO THE TTT.
if that doesnt work, you might have to get some mortar, you've got yourself a BRICK.

While I have no idea what you're getting at by your Straight Talk comment, as ST is little more than AT&T service that's sold through a 3rd party at a discounted rate, the fact that he's using ST may be part of his problems, at least in regards to the network issues. I'm also having an unbelievable amount of data issues on ST. ST is having some network problems that are affecting a decent amount of customers who are on their AT&T network.
One thing that the OP may want to try is this: Download DNS Changer from the Play Store, and change your primary and secondary DNS to OpenDNS1 and OpenDNS2. Or try different settings, as there are a bunch that are available. That has made at least some difference with my data connectivity issues.
Based on my own experience, having tried to go to JB directly from GB, is that if it's going to affect your radio, it's likely to completely wipe out your EFS data so you won't have ANY cellular or data networking capabilities. As stated, that's simply based on how it worked out for me, and there could easily be other side-effects that just didn't happen to show up for me.
I agree with returning completely to stock UCLB3, with the GB bootloaders. Then flash Entropy's 4.4.2012 Kernel, which will also install CWM Recovery. I'd personally reccomend Heimdall, as it seems to be somewhat simpler. Detailed information on returning to stock via Heimdall can be found in this thread:

I agree with parrot head. When issues arise go back to stock. That's the best part of our phones. They are damn near impossible to really mess up. Just have to be ware of bootloader flash going wrong. If you got your gb rom from keis your good to go though.

Appreciate the response, guys. I guess it doesn't hurt to try to start from scratch... AGAIN! It just seems like I'm putting an awful lot of hours into putting new ROM's and bootloaders on this phone. Going to be especially frustrating if I go through all the steps and it still doesn't fix my issues, which would mean my phone is broke. Oh well, guess I have little other choice.

It shouldn't take long to drop to stock and flash up to JB.. I've bobbled and missed steps here and there and have had to return from stock more times than I care to admit.. even rooting and flashing up the ladder only take about 20 minutes if even that..

Yes, the flashing process isn't that long, it's getting back my phone to all of my customized settings that ends up taking weeks. Home screen icon positioning, logging in to every app, system settings, etc.

I've always created backups with Titanium Backup, but when I restore the apps, a lot of them ask me to re-login or re-verify myself.

Spent a whole day going back to stock, then CWM red, then ICS, then Jellybean. Things seem to be markedly better, but the phone still seems laggy in a few places. Is this just because it's not the latest and greatest processor?
Also, the GPS just does not work right. It's still identifying me as being in Missouri even though I'm in Nevada. Consistently. Do I just have to live with that?

Are you still using the Trebuchet Launcher that comes built-in to the JB ROM? If so, that may be part of your lag problems. I just use ADW EX launcher. Here's an excerpt from the Paranoid Android JB OP:

As far as the GPS goes, I think Samsung just used ****ty receivers in the Infuse. My GPS isn't quite as bad as yours seems to be, but it's nowhere near as accurate or reliable as the GPS chipset in my crummy little Optimus V.
Hello all, I have a couple questions about the WP7.8 Sianto Edition for the HTC Arrive. I have the Sprint Arrive and am considering putting this rom on my phone. First I would like to know if anyone knows what kind of unlock it has, if any. Also, does the USB Tethering work in the 1.6 for the Arrive? I see it listed for the 1.6.1 for the 7 Pro..
And does anyone have any input on how reliable this rom is? I am looking for forward to the 2.0L that is said to be coming soon. As of late my phone has gotten so slow and my data connection speed is terrible lately. It seems every week it gets worse and I am having many apps just crash to the home screen and apps that rely on the data like radio apps just take forever to even open now. My wife has this same phone on the same network and hers is not having any of these issues.

Concerning the slow speeds, if you upgraded your phones memory by swapping the sd card, the two can be related (for example, my youtube videos are very sluggish while streaming). I Have an international 7 pro (no carrier branding) and it's been 10 months since my last hard reset (when I upgraded the memory from 8 to 32 gigs) and i am also experiencing very slow load times, but I don't know about the apps crashing. Data loading is also a bit slow on my side (on some apps while refreshing) but internet explorer just works fine.
But I remember the phone working just fine right after the memory upgrade, so my guess is that constantly adding and erasing apps and files like videos, music and pictures are kind of messing up the responsiveness of the system.
PS: Sorry for my response not being specific enough to your case. I didn't want to reply at first but since the 7 pro forums aren't much populated lately, I thought that my idea on the subject could help.

thanks for your reply, i was starting to think i wasnt getting one! lol but yea my phone is very slow compared to my wifes phone and has been since i got it. before the mango update it was laggy just scrolling on the Start screen. im hoping it is just the ROM that came on the phone, so thats partly why i want to update to the 7.8.. also i want the unlock benefits, but i cant seem to find if the Sianto ROM is unlocked or not.

For one, yes, the Sianto ROM IS unlocked.
And for another, the first time I loaded the Sianto ROM on my phone, it was at v1.4, I believe. After going through the steps, my phone was it's fastest ever, and I loved my phone even more than when I had first gotten it. Things were great for about a week, until tragedy struck: an app I installed from the Bazaar marketplace while at school basically bricked my phone. So, I borrowed a friends phone, let people know I would be incommunicado, and waited out the day. When I got home, I immediately came here to XDA, and tried to remember which ROM I had loaded, but wasn't able to get the same computer I had originally used. I remembered Sianto's name, but then saw ansar's ROM, and decided to try that one.
Long story fairly short: I switched back to Sianto after about a day, and haven't looked back since.
I don't know about USB tethering, but the internet sharing works in v1.6, and I especially like that Digital Power was added to the Settings. Every time I flashed my phone before, I had to reinstall Digital Power, but not with this version!
All in all, I wholeheartedly recommend Sianto v1.6, and I know that when v2.0L comes out, I'm definitely going to flash it.
