Hello all,
Just stumbled into the world of rooted G1 and its glory today on my sick day. Just performed the update and everything went smoothly (thanks for the detailed instructions everyone). Now I am attempting to add some themes and the 1.41 but, when I attempt to apply the update from my card (via alt s) it comes up with "Can't open /sdcard/update.zip (no such file or directory), then the install is aborted. Any help would be much appreciated.
Thanks,
Jim
One thing I can come up with is having your phone connected to the PC. Make sure you unplug all the cables first.
If that's not the case, I'll let people smarter than me have their say

Make sure you name it to update (if you are hiding file extensions in windows). Don't rename it to update.zip or else it'll show up as update.zip.zip to the phone when you are trying to flash it.
Thanks for the assist guys! I tried the above but the results are the same. Its odd because the rooting process went without a hitch. Now I can't get themes or 1.41. Very odd. Any other suggestions?
Can you access your card via phone though? It might be that when you had your phone hooked to the PC, you did not unmount ("eject" in Windows) it properly and therefore linux (Android) can't mount it.
You got it! After I tried plugging it back in to check it, Windows went through the whole "install" process. After that I ejected it and the update on the card went through no problem. Thank you much for the help!
Glad to help! I constantly have similar problem on my PC when my wife just unplugs USB flash from her Windows machine. I then have to go through the process of manual mount every time.
So after enjoying my rotted phone for a bit I decided I would switch the theme. Applied on the sd and all went seemingly well. Until the "Tmobile G1" screen came...and never went away. I tried to reinstall the theme, did a wipe, removed the battery multiple times but it doesn't go away. Now I do believe I bricked my phone. Where do I go from here?
Also, I meant rooted not "rotted". Although that might be what I have now lol.

Follow the very first instructions, the part that involves DREAMIMG.nbh. This will reset your phone back to RC29, so you can update to JF 1.41 again after. Be VERY careful, and make sure you copy the DREAMIMG.nbh file over properly, and make sure it's named correctly, etc. Flashing NBH's is pretty risky.
Also, I VERY strongly suggest you stay away from themes until you know more about the phone. If you use a theme that doesn't support 1.41, stuff like this happens and you'll brick. Stick to default until you're more comfortable.
once you have JF 1.41 installed and working, I would suggest making a backup, you can do this from the same screen you select Alt S for updates.
Then install your theme of choice, if it fails you don't have to start completely over.
Buuf theme is working great with 1.41
Thanks again for the assist! I shall try it when I get home from work. So to be perfectly clear I re-flash DREAMIMG.nbh. Then once completed I do the normal update.zip procedure with 1.41. I want to make sure, I don't think I can maneuver a new AV system AND phone with the wifey.

correct me if i'm wrong .. but flashing the DREAMIMG.nbh you will have to go thru the root process again .. yes?

You might have to, I've never flashed an NBH myself so I can't say for sure.
Yup turns out I had to. Once the NBH was flashed the phone booted up. After the wait to the "Android" screen I breathed a sigh of relief. All in I'm back to where I was when I first rooted and so far so good! Thanks again to all for the help.

Ok, I did my root process everything went fine, installed new theme ok. Today I decided to try and unroot and bricked my phone lol. When starting phone stuck at glowing android and I can't figure out how to restore my nandroid image. I have HardSPL, and JF 1.41 RC33 Lite (BUUF one). Im stressing out already any help?
here
10 characters
How about I already did? I'm having trouble figuring it out thats why I am here asking...
Im tring to compile fastboot but having trouble installing repo. Can you help me with that at least.
if you did any searching at all you should have found at least 10 threads where i personally answer this question, another thread titled "think you bricked your phone? post here" and several hundred others that all also answer your question
if you have the RC33 update on yyour SD card then go into the terminal and rename it to update.zip and flash it. if not then get it on there using any number of tools(sdcard reader, another phone, one guy even used his camera)
if you can't figure it out i'll buy your bricked phone from you for $10 and i'll even throw in an AT&T tilt for it
Ok, thanks for help sorry if I used "bricked" incorrectly I'm having trouble booting phone first word comes to my head. I look on this site and google to see how I can go back and all I see are stuff about tring to restore SPL and if you took time to ask if I tried any of em I would told you I have.
put the JF1.42 update on your SD card, there are hundreds of ways to do it, but the easiest is to use a micro SD card reader, or another phone, then put the SD card in your phone and reboot into recovery mode, then press alt+s and your phone will be fine.
there are hundreds of posts in these forums about people getting stuck on the flashing android screen and yet every single one of those people swear up and down that they searched before posting. just like walgreens told me today that there was no such thing as a AAAA battery even though i was holding one in my hand. people all need to search and there wouldn't be 65 pages of threads in the dev subforum.
so like i said get the update and get it on your sdcard and flash it. if you have no way of getting the update on your sdcard then find someone else who knows how to use fastboot cause i don't need to know how, or go to walmart and buy a micro SD card reader for $20
Still stuck at screen... got any other tips for me
go into command prompt and type adb shell wipe all then try again. this will completely wipe everything including OS from your phone, if by some fluke it still doesn't work start over with RC29 and re-root your phone
It giving me adb not found, you're talking about command prompt I get to by pressing Alt+x correct?
no, i meant plug phone in and let it boot to the flashing android, but in the terminal(alt+x) you need only type wipe all, going to bed now it's late will reply to more issues in morning
Ok, Good night hopefully I figure it out lol
Ok thanks for help.
Sorry about getting off on wrong foot I probably should have described steps I had taken already.
Hey guys, this is going to be my first post up here, usually just read up and find what I need no problem but today my first problem arose with my G1. I'll wrap it up quickly:
-Just got a new G1 through an insurance claim.
-Rooted no problem running SuperD v1.9.2
-Curiosity got the best of me and I attempted to try out CaNNoN Complete Eclair
-Didn't work correctly so I restored back to my most recent backup of SuperD v1.9.2
Once I restored, I found that all I had were the apps the SuperD includes built-in to his rom. Not one downloaded app was found on my phone. When I check in the market it still says all of them are installed, wont let me open them at all though. So of course I try to fix it myself and now my SD card just says Lost.Dir on it. Also now it goes through the T-Mobile G1 screen, begins the Super D boot image, and then goes black. I still have access to recovery, what happens now?
Mini update: Partitioned my SD again and now I get past the boot image, still no apps and I can't even reinstall them! Any help would be appreciated.

both of you wipe data, dalvik, and sd: ext partition. repair ext partitions and reflash. you're not bricked if you can get past the t-mobile g1 screen or can get into recovery or bootloader.
Thank you r3s-rt, for giving me hope but honestly, i didn't understood what I need to do.
Thank you
I'm unrooted now and i can't pass the android logo, I can't get access to the operating system. How can I do the partitions, repair and reflash?
you can try to start over and get it to 1.6 again by following this sites guide
upgrade.android.32teeth.org
already done that, but with 2 updates. No success

Buddy you need to first get a plain ( original ) 1.6 Rom as an update.zip on your sdcard boot into recovery , do a wipe THEN apply the update THEN reboot and wait , it will take a while to boot. DO NOT WIPE AFTER THE UPDATE is applied , you must let it *first boot* so it can rewrite the missing files..
where can I get that file? i've tried some but says no signature
I've already done that, nothing happens, the problem is still the same, I will try to flash HardSPL and see what happens
i was reading the topic of SPL and my phone is now unrooted, i can't do anything, i don't know what to do with my phone!
If you are un_rooted then you need to find a original un_rooted Rom , that was not signed with the test keys , ,if you are rooted you need to find a rooted Rom signed with the test keys , if you try to modify any of these roms before flashing them YOU NEED TO RE_SIGN THEM with the right keys , or you will get that no signature error ..
do you know where can I get that? Sorry about all the questions. Thank you
Everything that you need is in the link at the bottom of dan0zone's post right above you (#15). That is a walkthrough specifically geared toward G1's. The original image file for 1.5 is one of the first links he includes. He's even got the links for RC29 (US) as well as RC7 (UK)!
Remember! First boot takes FOREVER!!!! Let it sit for at least 5-10 minutes before doing anything.
Good luck!
I've already done that but nothing happens...what happens if I try to flash UK rom in USA phone? I don't know what should I try more.
is there any cupcake update or any way to don't need to slide the keyboard when ask for sign in or create a new google account? I can now access to the Operating system in Safe mode when I got almost bateryless but when i need to slide the keyboard to sign in my google account, the phone shutdown again. Any sugestion? I'm almost there.

sorry, man. i have a tendency to just disappear and forget where i posted. are you using cyanogens or amon_ras recovery? i suggest amon_ra's. select the "wipe" option. then choose the first three options that appear. then flash super d 1.9.2.
or just follow the rooting process all over again. if you can't get into recovery.
(recovery is accessed by holding the home key while powering the phone on.) if you need anything else, please pm me. i'll always respond to a pm, but very rarely to a post. sorry.
ive been working on rooting my inspire via bubbys method and have run into several snags...
first off, im using a mac with parallels with windows vista installed.
I installed htc sync then uninstalled it, left the drivers there.
when i ran bubby's one click process and it got to the point of looking for the pd98img.zip this is where i hit a snag. Parallels pops up asking if i want to use it for the current VM session. i hit yes but it couldnt find the phone, had to unplug and plug back in twice.
the second problem was that when i finally got the pd98img.zip process to work the update failed...
the next issue was the rage thing. i got it to go through but terminal emulator will not run a 2nd time for me. it did force close, but wont open. just white screen and phone is sluggish. if i restart the phone, the cursor is still a $ not a #. not sure where i should go from here.
update: trying again after reading faq's that the issue may be the goldcard being wrong format. i formatted sd card on the phone itself and now running process over. ill make a brick outa this yet!
still getting model id incorrect! update fail! when doing pd98img.zip.
i get through the rage commands in terminal again and it will not run the 2nd time.
At this point i had to do some updates on windows, and now it wont even go through the process of making the goldcard through the utility included with bubby's, where as i had no issue prior to 170 updates windows had to make (i hate windows) so now im about to totally give up. ive tried two different sd cards, formatted them through the phone, because windows wont format them (i get an error with that too) ugh!
will someone PLEASE help me out?
Try a reboot.
Did you do a quick format or a full format of the SD card?
i did the format through the phone, dismount then format. the windows utility doesnt run, it fails immediately. no clue why.
i will try and reboot it and go from there again. otherwise i may try and download some aftermarket 3rd party formatting application to do it. ugh!
update: rebooting phone and windows changed nothing. i still see htc drivers etc. pc sees the phone if i switch it to disk drive. if i try and run bubbys format utility it tells me to check my drivers. they are there and were working prior to installing a ton of windows updates earlier this morning.
formatting sd card through dos right now...
*cross fingers*
i just want to rant for a sec while this is formatting.
ive been trying to root this thing for like 3 days now.
every single step has fought me tooth and nail, i dont know why, thats just how things go for me sometimes. but im going to do this. Im going to win and the phone may as well give in... my fuze was so easy lol
/rant off
thanks for the help guys, i get nervous when i get half way through a process and get an error message.
windows is not seeing the phone when in charge mode. htc drivers are still installed. i have uninstalled and reinstalled once already.
im getting this when i check out the driver for the htc phone:
androidusb.sys
Windows cannot initialize the device driver for this hardware. (Code 37)

I don't have internet atm when I get home ill run this. Finally got the .sh hack file to.run, had to set it to open in terminal instead of text editor.
im trying to get to the following folder through astro file manager:
sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1:82d1
but i have nothing like this. i can get to mmc1 but only see device, power, subsystem, and an event file. if i click subsystem folder i can click mmc1 again. i repeat this 10-15 times so it looks like:
sys/class/mmc_host/mmc1/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1/subsystem/mmc1 then at the end i get 3 files mmc0, mmc1, mmc2. but never anything like "mmc1:82d1" it is this way on both sd cards even after i format them through the phone like the instructions said.
update: was able to go to mmc2 and find the file right away, hope its okay...
well its doing something now.... info[ruu]wp,userdata,xx stuff.
hope thats good.
k that done, sound back on now. booting up...

Make sure you are happy with your downloads speeds first....depending on what radio you are using...if you are still on the downgraded radio you might want to update that.

so i installed the cm9 alpha, restored stuff via titanium backup (only green marked stuff, and some whites) and i got into a bootloop. so i went into recovery and instead of going into clockwork i used the factory reset thing at the start. (probably the main problem this happened)
so now when i boot up my phone, i cant access my sdcard. what do i do?
ive checked around ADB methods on pushing stuff over, but naturally that didnt work. so im basically stuck here. PLEASE HELP

Try using the All in One tool in the dev section to reflash CWM Recovery, then keep trying to ADB push a stable ROM zip to your SD card. It might take a few tries but it does work. I saved my phone from a similar situation a few weeks back using the ADB push method.
Sent from my HTC One S.
thats what im currently trying to do. for some reason clockworkmod recovery just wont work. whenever i try to go into recovery, the phone just boots instead. and i tried multiple times to push over a rom, but it just wont get past 4mb.
http://i.imgur.com/o0WZm.jpg
this is what happens.
keep in mind i had to scratch the whole using clockwork and used the other recovery instead. that atleast lets me get to recovery. but as you can see, it wont even push over 4mb out of the 137mb of the newest cm9 build.
let me explain what im doing, im following this guide (i dont quite understand what he means with the first part "flash your recovery back to stock" i just assumed he meant to reinstall the recovery, so tell me if i did something wrong here) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=25557817#post25850720
and im also looking in the how to push a rom with adb thread aswell. i feel like im doing the right thing here, and dont know what else to do. this is getting frustrating. a phone with no memory isnt all that enjoyable

I used this thread to salvage my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1667929
I followed the instructions to the letter, and got the ROM pushed on the third try. I reflashed and was back in business.

i tried that one aswell, but since my sdcard is not mountable, "- Ensure in Recovery that your phone shows "Unmount /sdcard/" and "Unmount /system/" (If they do not show this automatically, just press each one once respectively as pressing just toggles Mount and Unmount) " wont work for me. and it says that the file has to be in tools instead of permanent-tools, and that also did not work for me. ive tried basically everything up until now. theres still one thing i dwell on, and that is to flash to stock recovery. i dont know where to find that for a Norwegian Telenor handset. i can find the t-mobile one, but thats pretty much it
I had the same problem what I did was, I went to fastboot locked my hboot, "fastboot oem lock" and flashed original RUU in fastboot. RUU you cam find in development section. But first you have to lock your hboot.

i have to admit i have no idea what you mean here. im not pro at this, so i honestly didnt understand much of that. RUU is also something i dont "quite" understand what it. i think it is the OS itself or something.
i have no idea what i did, but i think i just solved my problem without even knowing why:s i just did the same **** over and over again. and i didnt push over anything. i just decided to "screw this, turn that phone on" went to storage and there the sd card was for some unexplainable reason. now i dont have any of my stuff though, that kinda sux

Looks like you found out for yourself; I was going to say that you may have to reboot your recovery a few times before the SD card shows up. I think I had to reboot CMW four or five times before it showed. After that, I was golden. Well, after pushing the ROM zip twice, that is. Make sure you always have a back up or ROM zip on the SD card from now on. It sucks that you may have to resort to a blank slate, but it's better than being stuck with a $500 paperweight!
