Alright, I had everything running fine on 1.5. I had the music widget on my home screen decided I didn't want it, so dragged it to the trash. Afterwards I got an error something to do with music. I have apps to SD by the way via the app. Anyway I can no longer open the music app. I wiped and reflashed and everything was fine until I used the appstosd app again. my music icon and widget have disapeared. I tried deleting Music.apk and replacing it. Still nothing. Any ideas?
I apologize if this has been covered already. I did search.
That's hilarious! Same thing happened to me! So I went back to The Dude!
I solved it by reformating my sd card and reflashing. Probably not the easiest way but oh well.
you probably destroyed the persistant settings for the music app or it's files in dalvik-cache.
the former can be solved by deleting its folder under /data/data
if you are you familiar with java class name convensions, you can also try delete its files in dalvik-cache

Thanks for the reply, but i already refllashed. Maybe someone else can learn from this though.
That's weird. I tried it just to see if it would duplicate. I checked out that widget before. Sorry, it didn't happen to me.

Ok so I'm running cog, the latest one, and when I go to the pics on my external sd, it is showing 4 of each pic. However, when I go to the folder there is only one copy. Anybody seem this or know how to fix it?

I had the samething happen only way i could get it to go away is reflash the rom.

It's the Gallery app bug in the leaked Froyo ROM we have. I know my JI6 had this problem from day one. There is no sure way to fix it.
The official Galaxy S Froyo ROM released in Europe is not better either. Its Gallery app has a nasty battery drain bug.
Try this without having to reflash.
Connect to PC and MOVE all of your pictures to your PC. Delete anything you see inside .thumbnails in the DCIM folder (from your default Camera storage). Move all of your pictures back to your phone. If you accidentally copied a .thumbnails folder, make sure you don't move that back in. Gallery will reindex all of your pictures and create new thumbnails.
Just deleting .thumbnails and a reboot works for me when/if this happens.

That didn't work for me. I just tried it. My gallery started showing multiple photos again. I think this only happens when I connect to my PC at work (and/or home) and browse photos using Explorer.
same thing happening to me, i have 3 of each photo on the sd card
Try going to your picasa web albums at picasaweb.google.com/home
login with the gmail account you use on your phone and look at your web albums
By default the gallery app / android will sync with picasa web albums, so anything added there will appear in gallery.
I've never used picasa but I'm gonna give it a try.

Move everything into your internal sd card. I know it sucks and it's not as secure but just make sure you backup regularly. It got really annoying deleting the thumbnails once a week and it hasn't happened since I shifted everything to my internal sd.
I had the same problem. Not once, but twice. The first time I deleted the copies from my PC then rebooted. For awhile that seem to work, but just today I had the same problem in multiples of 8 for each pic.
Hopefully someone finds a fix for this
FROYO.UCJI6 Rooted, same issue except I have multiple icons for same pics that dont even exist on the phone anymore. Ive killed gallery, deleted every copy of .thumbnails I can find, rebooted..etc. No avail, folders that no longer exist on the phone show up in gallery, with multiple thumbnails for the same pic, very annoying.
I've been flashing roms like crazy here recently and haven't has problem yet. Though it is said it a leaked rom bug so I'll see if out happens again.

I also had that same problem with the cog ROMs. I tried many of the suggested solutions, including deleting .thumbnails. Unfortunately, nothing ever worked.
I have since switched to Perception, and I haven't had that problem since.
Ok..here is the fix from other thread
With root explorer delete:
- /dbdata/databases/com.android.providers.media/externalXXX.db
- /sdcard/Android/data/com.cooliris.media
reboot
Good luck

Worked for me too!!!

I am having an issue with playlists. I am currently running on TouchMIUIwiz v2.0. I have never encountered this problem before.
Anyway, in a nutshell, my playlists are deleting whenever mediascan runs upon boot. If they don't delete, or even when they do, the playlists are still read in music players, like PowerAmp, AOSP music player, MIUI player, etc., but are completely empty. Playlists show but with no tracks.
Playlists were generated by mounting the phone as mass storage and saving playlists in the same folder as my music (sdcard/Music). I use Winamp to make and save playlists.
I tried formatting my memory card to no avail. I read that this problem happened on some forum after deleting "albumthumbs" folder. But I had that folder deleted on my Optimus V's sd card and it had no problem. Copying that backed up folder to my sd card didn't work.
I tried searching for solutions on many forums. I tried syncing with players, like mediamonkey. The problem still persists.
Is this a ROM issue? Or is it an sd card issue? Would Odin'ing work to fix the situation?
Edit: I have flashed Revolution's and John_2K2's Sensekick v1.0 rom and did not have this problem. It lies within TouchMIUIwiz. Though, it's weird. I had v1.1 and did not experience the problem. Now on v2.0 it happens. When restoring my v1.1 nandroid the problem exists. I tested the problem after a fresh install of TouchMIUIwiz v2.0 and it was still there. It must be some error in the rom. I'm hoping for a a fix.
Edit 2: Nevermind. Sensekick has deleted playlists as well. But media scanning isn't as bad. The playlist may be deleted but it still shows on music players with the tracks intact. I'm going to Odin to see if it will resolve the issue.
Sorry posted by accident was gonna reply then saw the edit

I'm going to Odin. Sensekick finally replicated the problem. So the issue may be lying within my phone itself.
Edit: I Odin'ed and flashed back to TouchMIUIwiz v2.0 and the problem still persists. I have no idea what's wrong. I also formatted my sd card via phone settings and still had the same problem. I don't know what to do at this point.

I redid everything you did, and im having the same problem..im confused as well, i hate the stock ringtones and rely on my phone for music. when i use Astro to check if the music is even there, it is, and so are my ringtones. i just cant play them using "Music" from google (or anything else) and i cant select my custom ringtones.. some times if i connect my phone to my computer and go to /sdcard then discconect, my music is there and it works for X amount of time (always different) then it cant see them again..
It's a problem with the TMW rom. Ayoteddy says he's looking into it. I ultimately reverted back to the stock deodexed KG2 rom. No problems whatsoever. No cool themes like TMW and may not be as fast. But at least my music, which I hold very important, plays fine with playlists.
The reason custom ringtones didn't work either is because of media scan. The way media scan runs on TMW is flawed somehow. The way it reads media is off. It won't start at boot, it misreads or deletes playlists, etc.
I miss using TMW. But until it gets fixed I'll have to stick to the old trusty stock KG2.
It's been fixed, try this http://www.multiupload.com/TQRZPPP411
This fixes the media scanning issue, and may also fix the gallery deletion issue.
I don't know the technical stuff behind this, I think I figured out the cause of the deletion of playlists. It happens when I restore a TB backup of Poweramp. Upon flashing a rom, media scan scans my sd card to see what files and playlists are on it and so on. So that playlist file path is saved. When I restore Poweramp, the restore file has the playlist saved within it already. So when I restore, it duplicates the playlist entry under one file path (again, this is my explanation, as I don't know the technical stuff behind it. Pretty much my educated guess). This causes a conflict and so while the playlist may still be existent within media players, the actual file is deleted due to the same file path conflict.
In TWM, media scan was edited in some script or something, explained by teddy and sduvick. It wouldn't scan on bootup. But after that was fixed, the playlist conflict was still existent.
Right now I am on GCv2 (GingerClone v2). Media scan worked fine and playlists read upon flashing. But deletion occurred after restoring Poweramp via TB. To fix this, I went into TB and wiped data for [PLAYLISTS] Media Storage 2.2.1. After that my playlists weren't deleted.
Sorry if it seemed I made it look like the TMW rom was at fault. I knew it had to be something on my end, one of my settings or backup restores. So thanks to everyone who helped try to solve this issue for me.
Does anyone here play the Monopoly game by EA? In my device, all of the game assets show up in the gallery and there are a lot of them.
I have gone through putting '.nomedia' files in them, rebooting, cache clearing, force stopping the gallery but nothing works.
Any help will be very much appreciated.
PS Similar thread in the Galaxy Tab area yielded no luck.
You're .nomedia file has a "." at the front?
yup '.nomedia' copied it from the copilot folder whose files do not show up in the gallery so im sure it is the correct system file, zero bytes
clear "media manager" cache after putting .nomedia inside "games" folder, then reboot, it won't work otherwise (i think it's a bug in the media manager)
is Media Manager the same as Media Storage? I dont seem to have Media Manager in my application list
yes sorry i did it few days ago (i had gallery spammed from monopoly too) and didnt remember the name correctly
Thanks Christian Troy, everything seems to be in order now, although on the first reboot nothing but web albums were showing up, now it looks pretty fine, I'll just have to remember to clear the media storage if it happens on another installation. XDA OWNS!
yes because you have to wait till the end of the scan (which can take some time if you have a lot of folders of image / video / music)
that thing made me go crazy... i fixed it the first time clearing all the cache, but few days ago i tried that way and worked
Hi all
I've installed some apps which have their folder on the sdcard with various images, sprites, sounds (one of these is a satnav app).
The problem is, these appear and clutter my gallery and music apps. I use both apps from motorola and not their google counterpart.
I already put a .nomedia file in the folders, rebooted the phone, cleared data on those apps, deleted thumbnail caches on the sdcard, and it doesn't work. They still show up.
So how can I do?
Thank you in advance
I've partially solved my problem with a media re-scan, triggered by renaming a folder containing media files (and then renaming it back)
The problem is that, if files into that folder change, because any app (or I) copies new stuff into them, all the hidden files pop up again in the gallery/media.
I wonder if it's an Android bug or a Motorola bug...
I've had the same problem and I solved it by placing .nomedia files in the unwanted folders and then force a media rescan with the app "Rescan Media" eek from the market
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.addz.mediascanner
or using quickpix to create that file

Where did I say that?
I tried media scanner but it doesn't work. (fyi i'm not rooted)
When I move music around (ie from the download folderr to the music folder) it gets duplicated in the music app, both motorola's and google's. Once i unmount and remount the sd card it sorts the problem on itself.
Same thing when I move images, the thumbnails get duplicated and only one of the two loads correctly, but I can't get them to disappear unless i delete my gallery's data, and then i lose all the video thumbnails. My gallery is now full of old thumbnails, gray "unknown" thumbnails, and thumbnails that don't load.

As far as I know, you don't have to be rooted to use the app I linked. There is a more extensive version of the app that specifically requires root which is what I base my assumption on...
The app only forces the android internal media-scanner service to re-index all files and it does so without giving any sort of feedback. Once the app is started the media-scanner is triggered and the app seemingly does nothing, so you wouldn't get a confimation or anything...
As I said I had the same problem, but using .nomedia-files and the app solved it... Be aware that if you place a .nomedia-file in a folder the contents of that folder and it's sub-directories are being skipped by the media-scanner.
I'd recommend cleaning up all the directories and systematically copy a .nomedia file in unwanted directories. After that launch the app ance more and you should be set...

The problem is that, even if I put nomedia files everywhere needed, when I move files in/out of these dirs, they all pop up in Gallery/Music, including those that were previously hidden. And to solve this (talking only of Gallery now) I have to clear its app data. It would be just easier to hide the "all images" section of Gallery...
I miss the good ol android 2.1 times where you could fiddle with everything with any app without worrying for refreshes, etc...

Neither have I, but ROM Toolbox uses it when it puts previews of boot animations onto my SDCard and the gallery doesn't pick them up.
Just use QuickPic from the market, if it's available to you. I've been using it for quite some time, install that and freeze the gallery app. Ability to hide certain folders is built right in.
+1 to the QuickPic app...the stock Gallery SUCKS!!! I hide all the folders I do not want to be scanned and now I have a clean photo library. I also use PowerAmp for music since I hide my music folder so that I don't see album art and PowerAmp allows you to select folders to scan (regardless if there is a .nodedia file or not) instead of scanning everything. I believe Winamp will do the same thing, not sure.
Hey everyone,
I was reorganizing my pictures on the sdcard when I began testing CM's new Gallery app (GalleryNext). At that time, I decided I wanted to reorganize my files. I used ES file explorer to search for a .nomedia file and copied the first result to the root of the sdcard while I looked a permanent place to put it after deleting and moving pictures. Looking back at the gallery, I noticed suddenly that all pictures disappeared from my gallery, which I expected.
However, after I moved the .nomedia file AND rebooted (several times), I've noticed my gallery is STILL empty. I also noticed PlayerPro doesn't see any music. My alarm app (Gentle Alarm) however still plays music to wake me up and the MediaMonkey app can see the music. What is going on? ES is set to show hidden files, the .nomedia files are where they need to be. I first cleared data on both Google and CM galleries (which didn't work), then I uninstalled Gallery Next (didn't work), and I tried SD Scanner which is an app that can trigger media scan on KK (I know the old methods don't work on KK). I also reflashed my ROM. After reflashing, I got ONE photo from my gallery to appear.

Yeah I just ended up copying everything elsewhere and reflashing the factory image, then re-doing everything. Although, it would have been nice not to. Just part of the gamble when using nightlies I guess.
I had the same problem few days ago.
I deleted appdata from settings, apps, all apps, gallery, then rebooted and used this app to fix it:
