Help I got a Brick - G1 Android Development

Hi there, can someone help me!!!
So here's my situation:
Not Rooted German G1 with 1.5
first time it booted in 1.5 i checked the box for always using dxtop as standard homescreen. well this was quite stupid, as the screens loaded up but without any icons or anything, couldn't even get into the settings screen...
i just figured i'd reinstall the firmware -> BRICK
now G1 only boots into the recovery screen and when i try to reinstall 1.5 it gives me this message:
E:Can't symlink /system/bin/bugreport
E:Failure at line 626: symlink dumpstate SYSTEM:bin/bugreport
Installation aborted.
any ideas
problem is, i think i could save my baby by installing a root firmware, with goldcard, but i don't have any way to read the CID from a sdcard... so I'm stuck here.
I'm thankfull for any help!!!

What you should have done is a wipe. In fact I would try that even now. From the recovery screen do Alt+W. See if it boots properly. If it still boots to recovery, you can try the update again but I doubt it will work as it is probably looking for the previous version of the firmware.

First thing,
you haven't modded your G1, so you MUST have warranty. Send it to t-mobile.
If you use the goldcard, you loose your warranty.
So think about it first.
A PCI-Cardreader and Ubuntu to read out the CID should do it. But it isn't easy! Or borrow a Windows Mobile-Device from a friend.
This is the easiest solution.
If you have no friend with a WM-Device (Or no friends... ) you could ask someone here for borrowing you a goldcard.
I have one, but actually I need the Stick for my PSP..
Hope that helps.

you bought the g1 on rc9 or u updated it manually to rc9?
its not a guarantee..
but try to reinstall the rc9..so change your update.zip files again and watch if it goes?!

Thanks everyone, now i tried allmost every signed firmware version out there, but nothing worked. seams like the updater won't let me install a smaler version then the one installed... Well I go to the elecronics store today and see if i can get them to let me read out my SD's CID on one of their G1s. should tae care of the problem...

just wondering, you said that you couldn't get icons to load, i can potentially fix that, and it says the install aborted which means it didn't flash. is the phone loading to the home screen?

Did you ever just try uninstalling dxtop through adb?

[HOW TO] UNROOT, get phone to STOCK firmware

ok since there are 5 threads right now on the first page about how to do it and there shouldn't be, this is what you do, i will not link anything to anything because you should be able to find everything pretty easily(they are all stickies)
so all of you that messed something up on your phone and need to get it back into warranty this is how, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
NOTE: if you have flashed a custom splash screen to splash2 then you will need to erase that before step one with this code
plug phone into usb in fastboot mode
Code:
fastboot erase splash2
After that you will have only one splash screen and when you flash the .nbh you will be fine
1. Get the original SPL for your phone, get it here
2. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your sd card. /sdcard
3. Download the DREAIMG.nbh from here.
4. Place DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card. /sdcard
5. Go into your phones recovery. [Hold the home & power button]
6. Push Alt+S on your G1 to flash it with update.zip
7. After it does its thing, gettig back to your home screen.
4. Start phone in bootloader. [Hold camera+power button]
5. Hit power to start the update DO NOT INTERRUPT!! i can not stress this enough.
6. Click on the action button(track ball) and your phone will reboot.
7. YOU NOW HAVE STOCK FIRMWARE, it will update on it's own in a little bit, or *Settings>About phone>System Updates*
MODS PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU TO STICKY THIS POST OR AT LEAST THIS ONE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485364
so that people can stop posting: how can i unroot my phone or can i revert back to stock firmware like theres not 10 different posts about it.
Mods sticky
Hey man you got my vote it was drivin me insane tryin to find this and thank you!!! Also, just to amke sure that it worked, what is it supposed to say on "About Phone". Thank you man
Just wanted to add one point - I followed this guide, but there's one bit that might not be obvious.
DREAIMG.nbh will restore your phone *mostly* to stock. There's one thing it won't change - the second splash image. If you've changed your splash images, you might want to restore them to stock separately before following these instructions.
Wouldn't be an issue for most users, but in my case the keyboard bit the dust and I had to do a return, and once I set it back to stock I couldn't re-root (and was left returning the phone with a custom second splash image).
i followed all of these steps and as it was applying the dreamimg rc29 for me it said failure... what do i try now? it seems that now my phone will only boot to the multi-colored screen and everytime i try to apply the update it fails about 3/4th of the way through... my phone doesnt work... any thoughts on how to fix this?
found the problem, sorry for my ignorance i didnt format the card completely so there were other files in the root and all i did was reformat and just copy the nbh file back over and it worked just fine sorry guys
one question...do i have to find the stock rc30 and rc33 to update also?? aren's there somethings required to update to cupcake? (like radio??)

you don't need to find the RC30 or RC33 files because when you have the stock RC29 your phone will update on it's own after a few hours. the only thing needed to upgrade to cupcake is the cupcake image. the radio is a choice and you ocan choose not to flash it. i still use the original radio that came on the phone with RC30 simply because i have been too lazy to get the latest radios
bump. good info

I rooted my fone for the first time today and played around. In the end I decided to unroot, because I need steeel and chompsms too much.
I went back to RC7 (my phone was previously RC9 before I rooted). How long should I expect to wait before my G1 auto-updates?
Thanks!
this should be a sticky... thanx
the greatest thing about the thread? well since making it i have only seen two people post that they need to unroot their phone and don'w know how. woo hoo
how long does it usually take to upgrade on its own? its been over 2 hours now and nothing..
its been over 24 hours since ii brought mine back to "stock" and i still havent received the update, what the f is going on? is this normal? sorry but im a newb.
same here I am back to the orignal RC29 but have not received any OTA like RC33???
to all of you that haven't recieved an update yet, there is an option in settings that will allow you to check for updates. or download anycut and create a shortcut. if you do not know how to follow the instructions in this thread you probably shouldn't have rooted your phone. i have reciueved many PM's about how to do this and as much as i am willing to help you, i expect you to have SOME common sense, if you do not i will not help
sorry man, didn't mean to piss you off, i stated im a newbie, i have the firm belief that nobody learns unless they try it themselves, albeit some help from others never hurts, + the version checker is on rc33, not rc29, hence i cannot take that route, if not i already would have. i guess ill simply continue to wait, phone works fine, just does not load any apps that have to be paid for on marketplace, i work for t-mobile, so im hoping that they may have stopped ota's of rc33 since we are launching 1.5 soon. quick question for those who know, is the build number supposed to be TC4-RC29 115247? this is the one i have. Thanks man!
+ I followed your instructions to a t. and have the classic "rainbow" android boot screen.
What happend to the sticky?? I culd have sworn this was stick yesterday.. PS thanks for this thread as i had to unroot my first g1 now i might have to do my second one .. argg..
Alternate way to revert to stock firmware without waiting for update
Hello,
This is my first post. I have been using an alternate way that I figured out to return to stock. This also works when you try to install an official update and it rejects the package due to invalid keys or device checks. You MUST already have root on your phone for this to work.
1) download official firmware image (whatever version you want)
2) extract recovery image from package to root of SD card
3) rename downloaded package to update.zip and place in root of SD card
3) reflash recovery image from terminal on rooted g1
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
4) Restart phone in recovery mode and proceed with update
5)Profit! Well, stock g1 without having to flash to RC29 and wait for an update.
I feel this is a more straightfoward way to flash back to stock. YMMV.

My htc magic is almost dead

Hey all i have just bought me an HTC magic..
after few days i was made the updates so it was rooted..
and then i saw the hero also was running on some magics..
so i started to make the neccesary things to do it..
But something went wrong...
my phone booting up...
but just hangs in the HTC magic logo
Maybe a wrong SPL , Recovery or Radio..
im new to this... so maybe i have misunderstood something..
As for now i can only do a few things for it..
1. if i plug my usb cable to it when the phones boots up nothing happends
but if i plug it in - while im in the 2 menus home+power and the back+power it found something... both xp and vista popped up found
Android 1.0" but no drivers seem to work...
but why is it a android 1.0 and not the normal 1.5
so i think something is been changed to older stuff.
my phone is not recognized in the adb devices
in my Android System Recovery utility
i only have 3 choices , when i rooted the phone when it worked i have a few more points
reboot system
apply sdcard:update.zip
wipe data/factory reset
and the error E:can't open /cache/recovery/command
when i use the apply function after i have dropped a update.zip file in my sd card i got this
Install from sdcard
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Verifying update package...
E:No sognature (5files)
E:Verification failed
Installation Aborted.
the only info i can give you about the phone is from the other menu
Sapphire PVT32A ship s-on h
Hboot-1.33.0009 (SAPP10000)

get some guys with htc magic to helps u..
I have the Vodafone magic and is having the same issue as the other guy, what are the steps to get the signature off for vodafone magic? thank you
What process/guide did you guys use for rooting? The modded recovery images work with the test keys, which most update.zips on the forums are signed with.
just share my experience with you.
I have the same SPL, and rooted without problem based on the instructions here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=530527, and then got bricked after flashing modd spl2004, not sure if i should use spl2005 or should flash spl BEFORE rooting? anybody would like to share your experience? thanks
anyway, will get back my htc magic in 5 days... will try again
probably you flashed a "B" rom instead of an "A". There is a thread listing all compatible "A" Roms. Now: Take out the SD Card and plug it into a PC. Delete the Update.zip from the SD Card and replace it with one from the thread. Flash this Update and AFAIK your done.
I had the same problem and tried to overwrite the update zip using ADB Push. However this did not work. I had to delete and replace via PC.
Hope this helps.
Regards

Download recovery-RAv1.0G.img here.
$fastboot boot recovery-RAv1.0G.img
apply update (make sure the update.zip is one for Google branded Magics, so 32A boards).
Thanks, i finally got this to work...
I dont like the 1.3 version tho, it always shows HTC screen and then "Loading..." for a minute or two everytime i press home button.
The 1.2 version don't

im in trouble...HELP!!!!

I'm a moron....
i did the most stable update from this site for my g1.
then, it worked FREAGIN GREAT (might i add)
but....just that wasn't enough.
i decided to try out the themes. thinking i could keep the great stable version provided in these forums but have the cool sleek look of a theme that i liked.
well, i wiped...and i applied the update..
and then.... T_T
my phone was stuck on the T-Mobile G1 screen. So, i did the Camera + Power boot and wiped everything off. Now, it's the standard RC-29 T-Mobile phone. But now, i can't root it. or even tell if i rooted it. and every time i try to apply an update, i'll alt+w...that works fine...but then when i apply the update... alt+s...it says it was aborted because it doesn't recognize the update.zip file (but it's on the SD card).
I went through the steps again to root my phone, and it's still doing it. any ideas? or answers?
HELP ME PLEASE ='(
Welcome to forums
have you tried a hard reset?
Here more info:
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/index.php?pagename=HTC_Dream
Good luck,
Thank You =D Love this site.
yeah, did that about a hundred times T_T
My phone isn't frozen anymore, it's just stuck at RC29 and wont let me do anything that involves rooting.
can't update it to RC33, cant apply themes.
whenever i get JF (which when i first open it each time, it says that i need an os that is compatible with JF, but then when i open it again it gives me a selection of upgrades) and download RC33 from there, it says their was an error.
and whenever i try to apply an update.zip file, it says update was aborted.
the ONLY update.zip file that i can seem to apply to my phone is the HardSPL file that you can download from these forums to root your phone.
also, i tried rooting my phone from scratch.
when i went to format the SD card, it only give me the option of FAT and not FAT32. just in case if that tid bit of info helps any.
nevermind!!!!
i fixed it! =D
Please report your fix for other users in the future, you did start a thread after all so you should also post your fix
and congratulations to timmymarsh on mod status.
Thanks my friend

Screen stuck on red green blue and white

First of all please be gentle! I am a complete novice and this is my first post. I have a Touch Pro on a Vodafone contract. I downloaded the recent ROM software upgrade from the Vodafone web site and began the transfer to my phone having followed all the advice. However, the download got stuck at 12% and no matter how many times I start over again it will not go past that point. Worst still the phone is now locked on a red/green/blue/white screen with the message "Upgrade ROM code error Please try again". the error message on the Vodafone software download is No 302. I have tried Vodafone technical help but as I was due for a new phone anyway they have sent me a Touch Pro 2 but don't seem to want to help me resolving the problem with my "old" phone. It is only 5 months old (replacement insurance phone) and in good condition but useless if it can't be made to work.
Can anyone help with simple instructions on how to download a ROM that will work. If not does anyone want to make me an offer for the phone? Currently locked on Vodafone but I am sure you guys out there have the skill to resolve that one.
Many thanks,
Hollybeau
So, they aren't asking you to send it back, I take it? If that's the case, then the first thing I would try would be to flash with the stock rom, if you can find it (not the upgrade that quit on you). If that doesn't work, then just try to flash hard spl. If hard spl goes through ok, you're golden and can flash any raphael rom you want. If it doesn't, the phone is probably toast. You got a new one, so just use the old one as artwork.
Thanks Farmer Ted,
Unfortunately I do not know the orginal stock ROM. It is not on the Vodafone web site and the HTC site keeps telling me that all the likely candidates are "not suitable" ( I assume this is beacuse it is some sort of Vodafone variant). I am afraid that "flash hardspl" means nothing to me - I told you I was a novice! Can you direct me to what and where please.
What bugs me is that here is a phone worth £200? but for a problem caused by Vodafone's buggy software upgrade.
Hollybeau
Start Here.
Best way to find everything you want to know about flashing ROMs.
Lol.
Hard SPL is a bootloader that allows you to flash any rom you want (not just vodaphone). It also has over-write protection, so if you get into the situation you're currently in, the phone won't be bricked. If you can flash it (make sure you flash the gsm version in the raph rom forum), you are fine and dandy.
If you can't find the stock rom online, you may be able to flash the upgraded rom off of your sd card (I believe this will work with a stock rom and stock spl, but am not 100% sure). Re-name the .nbh image file to RAPHIMG.nbh. Format your sd card (1-2 gb works best) to FAT32, and put the image on the root of the card. Go into bootloader (well, you're already there, you may not need to) by holding volume down and soft resetting. Hold vol. down until the tri-color screen appears. At the prompt, press the power button, and let the flash run its course. Soft reset when it says that the update was a success. Let the phone boot up until it gets to the the alignment screen, the hard reset and boot it up.
If you don't have an .nbh file, and instead have a .exe file from vodaphone/htc, then you should be able to extract the contents with either winrar or 7-zip (google) to get at the .nbh image file. I've done this before, and it works fine.
Many thanks to all who have replied. I have fixed the problem. It turns out that it was the download to my PC that was at fault. I downloaded the Vodafone software to my lap top and ran it from there and it has recovered the phone. I now have a spare, and working, Touch Pro. I may try the HardSPL and other ROMS just to use the phone as a test bed. Alternatively, anyone out there want to make me an offer?

Recovery Help Please!

Hey guys, today i attempted to root my HTC MAGIC 32A, and install KingKlick's 2.1 Eclair with HTC Sense for Magic v1.1. The rooting went fine, and i partitioned the sd card using the recovery tool (I followed this guide and used the downloads in that: www~theunlockr~com/2009/08/29/how-to-root-the-htc-magic-in-one-click/) for some reason, the device wont boot, and i tried wiping and reinstalling the update rom, with no success, it just stalls at the boot screen. Now i see that i did make the mistake of not updating my radio, which is at 3.22~ something, and im not sure my sd card was CAT 6. so i dont know what to do know. I can still access the recovery root menu , and was wondering what is the next step from here, or how do i return to the stock 1.5 cupcake firmware.
Anybody's insight is greatly appreciated
BTW PLEASE REPLACE CURVY DASHES (~) IN LINK WITH .'s AS I WASNT ALOWED TO POST LINKS BECAUSE I AM NEW
