"Re-doing" JF1.5 - G1 Android Development

So last night I finally rooted my phone after a ton of time of uncertainty, but I did it and it all works really well.
My question is that if I wanted to do a fresh install of JF1.5 while keeping root, can I just put that as update.zip on the root of my SD card, boot using home+power and do alt-w, alt-s to wipe the device and reapply the JF1.5?
This makes sense in my head, but I just want to make sure that this is the correct procedure for doing this. Also do I have to reapply the radio update as well?
Thanks in advance!

Ye mate thats the way.

perfectly good sense
doing an alt s on any update.zip that is created by hay or jf or the dude is already rooted
so you can flash it as many times as you like it will not take away root for u
and to check if u still have it you can download terminal emu and type in su and if the superuser app shows up asking permission or if u see the # sign then u still have root
cheers

Perfect -- thanks so much for the quick response.
It all seemed so confusing before I started, but now it all makes perfect sense!

And because they didn't answer it....
No, you do NOT need to reapply the radio image.

No Multi-Touch RC33 ROM

Here is a version of JF's RC33 1.41 without the multi-touch kernal included.
This one is JF's RC33 build modified with the PRE-MT kernal (1.31). It includes all the goodies that are standard with JF's builds and was recompiled from his source. This update does include the 1.41 recovery image.
ALL CREDIT GOES TO JESUS FREKE for providing us with the source for his modified ROM's
If you are interested or do not know what JF has added to the original images check this link
Just like JF's RC33 build this does not include the radio update which can be found here(MD5:CF8714D273FB0274574D9E3831E11FDD) this will need to be flashed separately in any order. To revert the radio you WILL NEED TO FLASH BACK TO RC29 THROUGH THE DREAMIMG.NBH file that can be found here
RC33 PRE-MT Kernal (MD5:97167BFDD7957F4D95C1538410003146)
http://drop.io/qyyqvmd#
*UPDATED* RC33 PRE-MT Kernal 1.42 Recovery image, No Amazon MP3, No Stock Email, no Term Emulator (which can be downloaded from the market, the author has been making changes so I didn't want to include it)
http://drop.io/689ghtm#
(MD5:F1B80E314926C7409DDCA6C0EE107626)
Save the zip file to your sdcard named update.zip, boot into recovery mode (home + power), and then press alt+s. I must recommend that you also do a wipe in recovery mode (alt+w) before applying the update as most of the esoteric issues that arise seem to be from not wiping. This will clear all your data/settings/apps, and you will have to re-register once it boots back up.
Again THANKS JESUS FREKE
Cool thanks for this, glad to see it worked out.
Do you think I would need to do a wipe going from mt rc33 to no-mt rc33?
Doesn't seem like such a large zip is necessary.
Does the MT really alter so many files?
Hopefully there will be a mini version that does the same thing
Only the Kernal is changed so if you want you can extract the boot.img and use the flash_image tool to re-image it over your current one. JF has a thread about the flash_image tool and how to use it at this link
The reason it's so large is because its a full ROM you can flash from RC29 etc. You could probably get away with not wiping but I have to recommend it since 90% of the issues people run into doing the updates seem to end up with a wipe so why not skip the issues. Its easy so re-sync contacts and reload apps.
Hahha thanks, so then the only diff is in the boot.img? Cool.
So I could just switch boot.img's and flash whenever I want to switch between normal and MT?
Ima try it righttt now
Any chance for a ADP1.1 No Multi-Touch ROM? Please?
why would any1 one want it without the multitouch?
Because of few problems with the MT version.
I just used fastboot to flash the image nd I gotta say, touch is workin great.
I like it better this way for sure.
Im gonna wait til multitouch gets fixed up and then ill try it again.
Thers is any "problem" with the multi-touch except that devs are not making apps for its kernal. Therefore some apps may act funny.
I personally don't use the MT at all so I don't want it throught the OS. And I don't know if its in my head but the pre-MT kernal seems to give me better battery life.

Good to hear. Flashing the boot.img is really all that's needed but I wanted to make a full update just for the exercise etc since this is fairly new to me and fastboot might be more difficult for some.
Yeah It's not really a problem.
I figured it's good that both ways are on here now though.
Thanks again!
If youre already running jf rc33 do you need to do a wipe?
Ah, apparently I didn't announce mine with enough fanfare
Oh well, it is a fun exercise.
Uh, and so why would I ever want or need this flash? Dead thread. Nothing added and of no value.
But nice try. Must really like your iPhone and your paycheck...

Glad you got the issues worked out as well. not trying to be disrespectful or anything but I told people i would make up a ROM so i did and figured it might as well have some instructions in case someone needs them. I did see that you had put one up but at the time thekills was complaining about the browser so I went ahead with my version.

There were request from a number of people for a non multi-touch version. If your not interested simply don't use it.
And as for the other comments....lol

No worries. If you keep updating your branch in the future, you may want to be sure and change the ro.modversion in the build.prop file.

[HOW TO] UNROOT, get phone to STOCK firmware

ok since there are 5 threads right now on the first page about how to do it and there shouldn't be, this is what you do, i will not link anything to anything because you should be able to find everything pretty easily(they are all stickies)
so all of you that messed something up on your phone and need to get it back into warranty this is how, FOLLOW THESE STEPS:
NOTE: if you have flashed a custom splash screen to splash2 then you will need to erase that before step one with this code
plug phone into usb in fastboot mode
Code:
fastboot erase splash2
After that you will have only one splash screen and when you flash the .nbh you will be fine
1. Get the original SPL for your phone, get it here
2. Rename it to update.zip and copy it to your sd card. /sdcard
3. Download the DREAIMG.nbh from here.
4. Place DREAIMG.nbh on the root of your SD card. /sdcard
5. Go into your phones recovery. [Hold the home & power button]
6. Push Alt+S on your G1 to flash it with update.zip
7. After it does its thing, gettig back to your home screen.
4. Start phone in bootloader. [Hold camera+power button]
5. Hit power to start the update DO NOT INTERRUPT!! i can not stress this enough.
6. Click on the action button(track ball) and your phone will reboot.
7. YOU NOW HAVE STOCK FIRMWARE, it will update on it's own in a little bit, or *Settings>About phone>System Updates*
MODS PLEASE I'M BEGGING YOU TO STICKY THIS POST OR AT LEAST THIS ONE:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=485364
so that people can stop posting: how can i unroot my phone or can i revert back to stock firmware like theres not 10 different posts about it.
Mods sticky
Hey man you got my vote it was drivin me insane tryin to find this and thank you!!! Also, just to amke sure that it worked, what is it supposed to say on "About Phone". Thank you man
Just wanted to add one point - I followed this guide, but there's one bit that might not be obvious.
DREAIMG.nbh will restore your phone *mostly* to stock. There's one thing it won't change - the second splash image. If you've changed your splash images, you might want to restore them to stock separately before following these instructions.
Wouldn't be an issue for most users, but in my case the keyboard bit the dust and I had to do a return, and once I set it back to stock I couldn't re-root (and was left returning the phone with a custom second splash image).
i followed all of these steps and as it was applying the dreamimg rc29 for me it said failure... what do i try now? it seems that now my phone will only boot to the multi-colored screen and everytime i try to apply the update it fails about 3/4th of the way through... my phone doesnt work... any thoughts on how to fix this?
found the problem, sorry for my ignorance i didnt format the card completely so there were other files in the root and all i did was reformat and just copy the nbh file back over and it worked just fine sorry guys
one question...do i have to find the stock rc30 and rc33 to update also?? aren's there somethings required to update to cupcake? (like radio??)

you don't need to find the RC30 or RC33 files because when you have the stock RC29 your phone will update on it's own after a few hours. the only thing needed to upgrade to cupcake is the cupcake image. the radio is a choice and you ocan choose not to flash it. i still use the original radio that came on the phone with RC30 simply because i have been too lazy to get the latest radios
bump. good info

I rooted my fone for the first time today and played around. In the end I decided to unroot, because I need steeel and chompsms too much.
I went back to RC7 (my phone was previously RC9 before I rooted). How long should I expect to wait before my G1 auto-updates?
Thanks!
this should be a sticky... thanx
the greatest thing about the thread? well since making it i have only seen two people post that they need to unroot their phone and don'w know how. woo hoo
how long does it usually take to upgrade on its own? its been over 2 hours now and nothing..
its been over 24 hours since ii brought mine back to "stock" and i still havent received the update, what the f is going on? is this normal? sorry but im a newb.
same here I am back to the orignal RC29 but have not received any OTA like RC33???
to all of you that haven't recieved an update yet, there is an option in settings that will allow you to check for updates. or download anycut and create a shortcut. if you do not know how to follow the instructions in this thread you probably shouldn't have rooted your phone. i have reciueved many PM's about how to do this and as much as i am willing to help you, i expect you to have SOME common sense, if you do not i will not help
sorry man, didn't mean to piss you off, i stated im a newbie, i have the firm belief that nobody learns unless they try it themselves, albeit some help from others never hurts, + the version checker is on rc33, not rc29, hence i cannot take that route, if not i already would have. i guess ill simply continue to wait, phone works fine, just does not load any apps that have to be paid for on marketplace, i work for t-mobile, so im hoping that they may have stopped ota's of rc33 since we are launching 1.5 soon. quick question for those who know, is the build number supposed to be TC4-RC29 115247? this is the one i have. Thanks man!
+ I followed your instructions to a t. and have the classic "rainbow" android boot screen.
What happend to the sticky?? I culd have sworn this was stick yesterday.. PS thanks for this thread as i had to unroot my first g1 now i might have to do my second one .. argg..
Alternate way to revert to stock firmware without waiting for update
Hello,
This is my first post. I have been using an alternate way that I figured out to return to stock. This also works when you try to install an official update and it rejects the package due to invalid keys or device checks. You MUST already have root on your phone for this to work.
1) download official firmware image (whatever version you want)
2) extract recovery image from package to root of SD card
3) rename downloaded package to update.zip and place in root of SD card
3) reflash recovery image from terminal on rooted g1
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
cd sdcard flash_image recovery recovery.img
cat recovery.img > /system/recovery.img
4) Restart phone in recovery mode and proceed with update
5)Profit! Well, stock g1 without having to flash to RC29 and wait for an update.
I feel this is a more straightfoward way to flash back to stock. YMMV.

Fastboot Help (Rid me of my headach)

Ok, lets start from the beginning. I have a gt that had non-rooted rc33, i downgraded to rc29, rooted it, upgraded to rc30, and now to jf's rc33 1.41, obviously still rooted. Once I got to rc33 1.41 i finished re-installing all the programs i had lost along the way (going to rc29). Then I changed my boot images (splash1 and 2) using fastboot. Everything was fine untill i went to change my boot images again and powered on using camera+power and the grey screen pops up first since i left it on my sd card (dont remember what the grey screen is i just remember not to interupt it but im sure if youve rooted youll remember what im talking about), well instead of clicking the trackball i accidently hit the power button, wiping my phone once again. I went back to rc29 and rooted it (wasnt sure if i had to so i just did it (i had the time)) then back to the rc33 1.41 by jf. got all my programs back the way it was before. i noticed when it booted into rc29 the first time and everytime after that my splash1 screen was back to stock but my splash2 screen was the one i had put there. so i powered off after i got all my programs installed and went to change my first splash screen, and now once i exit out of the grey screen (yeah i know, still on the sd card) it goes to the RGB screen (the normal screen), not the skateboarding androids, and definately not fast boot.
My question: Without going back through the ENTIRE process all over again, how do i get my fastboot back? I may of missed it on the forums, but I promise, it wasnt for a lack of searching, LOTS of searching (and not just this forum). Plenty of forums tell me how to use fastboot, just now what to do to get it back...
Thanks in advance for your help..
(oh and if it makes a difference I recently installed a theme more details can be provided if needed)
Since i take it that you are already rooted.. then i think it should be easy.. just download the bootloader devs edition again and place it in your sd card and then go safety mode and update it again.. but i think the reason why its going to the gray screen when you press camera + power is becuase you may still have the dreaimg.nbh file in there.. i would delete that first.. then put the modified bootloader and then update it and see if that works... Those are my thoughts hope it help.. good luck

yes i know that its the dreaimg.nbh i just forgot what the name was, and yes i should definately delete it since its what got me in this situation to begin with lol
now i found the bootloader i need (i got bored and decided to root my girlfriends g1 while waiting for an answer and found out that i forgot to use the bootloader like i had before) and have it on the sdcard, named as update.zip, waiting to be installed, but before i do it, am i going to lose all of my programs again? i have 127 programs, many of them (like locale and such have settings edited) that i do not feel is worth having to go through a 3rd time
so not my only question is, when i hit alt+s am i going to wipe my phone again?
Oh and thank you for such a quick responce n8izzle, and another thing, why safemode?

No it won't wipe your programs if u install the boot loader. And by safe mode he meant recovery mode (i am sure). If u want to be on the safe side go to recovery mode first and then do a NAND backup by pressing Alt+B which will back up all your partitions if something should go wrong again. Then update bootloader.
So Alt+B first then Alt+S and then u should have fastboot again and also backup images of ur phone on ur SD card
hey sorry had to restart my computer i just got ubuntu .. but yea thats what i mean not safe mode but the other lol... but hope that you got it working if not you can pm me and i will walk you through it...
Yeah I didn't put 2 and 2 together than bootloaders wher part of the rc updates lol, it makes perfect sense to me now, how's ubuntu?
Oh and can anyone elaborate on exactly what's backed up with the backup tool in the recovery menu and how to restore it
(New to linux incase anyone was wondering, I've always wanted to get into it but every class I've taken for my certs for web development has been for windows os, so hang in there I'm a quick learner lol)
ubuntu is pretty cool i like it.. im not too familiar with it but i initially got it so i can partition my sd card... so i'm learning on this as well... if you are talking about backing up your phone with nandroid it works great... you can view the directions and all below... if you want i can help you step by step if you run into problems.. just pm me if you do...

Issues going from UK JF-RC9 to JF-RC33

So im just wondering are there any issues in doing this??
Im assuming that i would have to possibly update my Radio as well but im just wondering is there any downside to doing this?? im already rooted and the G1 is (currently) on a clean install of RC9 with nothing installed
so is there anything stopping me getting an RC33 image and flashing right at this second??

Good to go. Just remember to wipe your /data since you're changing the build region (Alt+W in the recovery tool).
aww sweet !! gives me something to do whilst passing time in the office
Since its JF's RC9 anyway do i need to bother regaining root or shall i just leave it as is with the recovery.img and the update.zip on the SDCard??
You already have root (JF RC9) and your target build (JF RC33) already has root, so you don't need to do anything. Just place the update.zip in the sdcard and get it on.
Followed Quoted and Done!!
Sorry for the newbish-ness,,,, mmmmm RC33,,,,, mmmmmm no change (more themes lmao)
don't forget to change your sig. I'm DLing the RC33 myself now that I know it works. BTW, which didi you go to, 1.42 or 1.43? And do 1.42 themes work with 1.43?

Ok using Astro i've managed to install some of my apps from the SD Card and they are all working quite nicely
Additionally the Wifi Tether App is installed,, but cant check that till i get in from the office
Awesome. I just did this ti mine, and all is working on mine as well. I installed the 1.42 Rc33 aero theme as well. Looking good.

How 2 Root 1.33.0006 SPL & Flash SPL || MyTouch3G / 32B Magic || Without Goldcard ||

How 2 Root 1.33.0006 SPL & Flash SPL || MyTouch3G / 32B Magic || Without Goldcard ||
Tutorial : Rooting the "perfect" 1.33.0006 SPL & Flashing a new SPL
Newb Difficulty Level: 5/10 (A learning android newb)
Advanced Root User Difficulty Level: EASY!
GIVE CREDIT WHEN ITS DUE!
Note to readers:
I actually found a easy fix for 1.33.0006 for 32B Magic or MYTouch3G phones
KEEP IN MIND THAT I AM USING A MERLOT MYTOUCH3G, Stock 4GB SD card & BROKEN "Market" Application SO MAKE SURE YOUR DOWNLOADING THE FILES THAT WORK BEST FOR YOUR DEVICE and I am only providing steps used to bypass the "PERFECT SPL 1.33.0006" & YOUR RESPONSIBLE FOR THE RESULT OF YOUR DEVICE!
FILES I USED:
*ADB is a MUST so make sure to watch this video to safely install ADB
(NOTE: The video is using 1.6 donut spk... the steps are the same but use the 1.5 r3 spk on the same page given on the video.)
*flashrec-20090815.apk
MAKE SURE YOU USE THIS VERSION...!
* "Rooted" Recovery Image
I am using Amon_Ra's recovery-RA-magic-v1.2.3G which in my opinion is the best as it has flashed every rom perfectly if you know what your doing but it depends on what rom you will be flashing in some cases.
* A NEW SPL!
I am currently using Engineering-SPL-HBOOT-1.33.2009-signed by Amon_RA (BIG UPs TO Amon_RA for these files) on my T-Mo MyTouch3G but it depends on your device.
NOW TO WORK!
Step One - Enable USB Debug/Development Mode:
*Load up your device till you reach your home screen. Once your device is up and running hold menu and go to settings>applications>development then enable "USB Debugging" then press home & plug the device up to your PC & DONT MOUNT.
Step Two - Install Recovery Image Loader via ADB:
*Open CMD and as the video above stated you must navigate to your ADB folder. Once that is done you should install flashrec-20090815.apk (Recovery Image Loader) though CMD by placing it on both your SDCARD & the ADB Tools Folder (For me its C:\android\tools\).
~Now type these commands within CMD:
cd c:\android\tools (press enter)
adb install flashrec-20090815.apk (press enter)
*Now you have installed Recovery Image Loader and you may now close CMD but dont restart your device
Step Three - Rooting the unrootable (Sorta):
*Now find your recovery image ( Example : Recovery-RA-Magic-v1.2.3G.img or Recovery.img). Once found rename it as "cm-recovery-1.4.img"! Save this file to the root of your SDcard & delete the "flashrec-20090815.apk". now press backup recovery image and wait till its done (quick 2secs) then erase everything but "cm-recovery-1.4.img" within the text box. Now type " /sdcard/cm-recovery-1.4.img ". Now press FLASH RECOVERY IMAGE and wait till its done. Once its done restart the device and be aware that you will lose everything that isnt saved to your google account or backed up to your PC.
SMART COMMENT: WOW DID I JUST ROOT THE UNROOTABLE? I guess I did lol
Step Four - Change SPL to Prevent this issue in the future:
*Move the SPL ( & the ROM if you want to start installing it right away ) you downloaded earlier to your SD card and delete everything else if you want. Now select "WIPE/FACTORY SETTINGS" and follow on screen instructions and then do this a additional 2 times to be safe. Now flash the SPL and once it starts to reboot on its own (after it shows the picture of a box and a device) hold the home button and then FLASH YOUR ROM
THATS IT! YOUR DONE AND YES I DID SHOW YOU HOW TO ROOT 1.33.0006 but it doesnt run properly so make sure you flashed a new SPL before flashing any new "Radio" or "ROM" images or you could brick your device.
HOPE THIS HELPED MANY WHO HAD PROBLEMS ROOTING THE DEVICE!
isn't this just the same as the one click root? cuz on the one click root you don't need adb. It just seems like you are adding necessary steps to it. Please correct me if I am wrong. I don't mean to bash your work by any means.
I don't see why no one else has congratulated you on compiling one of these for those people that might eventually NEED THIS GUIDE! Lol.
Great work. Simple.
I had the "perfected SPL" when I picked up my MT3G on the release date. Pretty unfortunate...but I rooted it like two days later. Lol.
I never got an answer in the other SPL thread so here it goes...
Can we safely go from one SPL to another?? The reason I ask is I have the problem with the blurry screen at boot but I only encountered it when I flashed a new SPL. Now I have read up on it & it looks like some people running the same ROM with different SPL's don't have the blurry screen.
Seeing how so many people had problems bricking with haykuro's DangerSPL, the SPL is something I don't wanna mess with unless I have a definate answer. So anyone wanna chime in on this?

I try to follow your guide to root my HTC Magic and I have some questions.
1. I run the command "adb install flashrec-20090815.apk " and it installed the flashrec to "/data/local/tmp" directory. Is this correct?
2. I copied the recovery image to the sd card and insert into the phone. then based on you guide. I should delete the flashrec I installed while ago. But I cannot delete the file. Can you give us more details regarding this one? Thanks.
3. Sorry but I have some hard time to sollow the step three. Can you give us more details about this.
thank you and good day
Steven
To be 100% honest im not sure where it is saved... i just happened to run into a working solution at random.
I do know that the older version i tried (Recovery Image app) didnt want to install

So basically what you're saying is you don't know?? If you don't, that's cool. But don't laugh & then not give an answer. Just makes you seem arrogant, like you feel better than us. Which, by the way, YOU AREN'T!

ANYWAY I only know what I posted... I am a learning newb and I am getting better at this stuff as I go. My tutorial explains exactly what I did.
EDIT:
P.S. My smartass comment was for the people that was calling this useless just because they didn't experience this issue

Eh no hard feelings, I was just looking for a straight answer. I just wanna get rid of that damn blurry screen, thats all. Thanks for the step by step tho. I did it the easy way with one click root but I did my G1 the hard way so I know how frustrating things can get. Thanks again
i was able to flash SPL 1.33.0006
I had rooted my MYTOUCH 3G in August using the one-click method. I have been running several ROMS since then. But I never tried to flash a new SPL. However, after reading this post I decided to give it a try. I booted into recovery mode/ wiped and then flash 1.33.2009 SPL. It loaded and rebooted into recovery again. I then wiped and loaded a ROM. everything is fine.
Later I checked and I now have 1.33.2009 SPL the perfect SPL 1.33.0006 is gone.
so im on a rooted mt3g, i have been running different roms, cyan, hero, dwang, i am at dwang 1.13. so to flash the 1.33.2009 spl do i have to wipe and flash to dwang 1.12 then flash the spl then dwang 1.13?
also what are the advantages/disadvantage?
which spl should i use?
thanks
Hi
I have 1.33.0004 on my 32B Sapphire and Android 1.6. Will this method help me root my phone? If not then is there an easy way to root my phone?
Thanks in advance
