I already have all the paths for apps , apps-private, etc. etc. but im trying to think of anything else that i might include in the script...suggestions?
maybe being able to customize the script for people who might want to move only certain things to the sd card
maybe someone may only want apps
or apps +dalvik
apps +dalvik+data/data
etc...

so just manually create an ext partition. it only needs to be done once and when future updates come you can just update normally.

i would think it's do-able .. maybe difficult .. but do-able .. this would be a one time thing tho .. ie. JFv1.31_RC30_EXT2 .. once the apps are moved and everything you never want to run that update again .. you would then update normally .. so anyone wanting that type of automated app & data transfer would use the old version and then upgrade to the new .. similar to going backward to RC29 to gain root before upgrading
for anyone who HAS apps & data on the card it's very simple to maintain it .. i have the 1.41 update.zip modified in my signature so you don't freeze on the flashing android if you install apps to EXT2
Not everyone uses a lot of apps so the apps they download don't really affect the memoryy, I would say data from, apps like browser, steel maps youtube and market are more important but there is already a script for that. If he decides to make an update that moves apps to sdcard he would then have to make two versions of future versions one for people who want apps on sdcard and 1 for people who don't making 6 different versions each time and then he'll probably have to deal with the numerous people who tried installing before making a partition and screwing up their phone
Also what's the fun if you have everything done for there's no learning plus its only three steps and a few commands not like compiling multitouch
I personally think its not really needed (not to bash you or anything) just my opinion

Sorry man, it isn't going to happen. It is too hackish, and it would cause too many problems and support headaches. (see the apps to sdcard thread for plenty of examples of what I mean)
I just want a way to move all the apps to the S.D card on windows vista p.c.
To play devil's advocate. What about the person that wants to name their partition something other than what is already being discussed? What if they name it /system/sdmount or /system/cachemount? Sure it would be nice to have all apps go to the SDCard, but it is a realitively simple procedure and it does not address the issue of people that are having issues with formatting their SD card to begin with. IMO all it would solve is a timesaver for those of us that already have it done and dont want to repeat the steps every time a new JF ROM comes out
The ability to run apps from the SD Card is something I would wait for Google to officially support. The current method is far too crude to put into JF's ROM.
Stability is an issue.
Lets start smaller. Maybe have a script included that redirects all caches to the sd card.
Maybe even a "root only app" that comes with the next JF update that allows you to choose which cache links are enabled/disabled.
That would save more than enough space.

This is much more reasonable. The cache for some of the apps was the problem. Once the cache is redirected onto the card all sorts of room opens up on the phone. Now, once paid apps appear they may get prohibitively bigger, but really if you push all the apps and cache onto the card then what is the purpose of the internal memory on the phone?
I think that it would just be easier for someone to make a bat file that auto for format, backup and add the needed files to the phone. That way all people have to do is type in a few info in dos and it will do all that is needed.
Maybe ill get around to making one.
YES TRUE
True the official SD CARD Hack is a bit difficult in the procedure but
it works. Its the SD Caches & Data hacks that are bit of a problem.
but that problem get s solves when u move one apps data at a
time.....instead of all at once...feel me.
Honesty, the best thing to do is get a "Droid Sans Tweaks" type app
that converts the files backs up the 2 system files through root
access & restores them when u do an undo & it should also be albe to
Rebot the G1.
Would This Be Feasable & would someone be willing to type a letter to
droid San Tweaks or ask them if they would do this??
If Droid Sans did this the only thing a perso would have to do is
split his SDcard in two partions. & the new "JF v1.41 RC30" Modded ROM
has FDISK in it now in order to partion your SD Card right from your
phone.
DroidSans app already Reboots the G1 & changes scrpits for auto rotate
on the phone. People are sleeping on this app.
EDIT: I wrote him a letter already. Ill let u know his reply when he gives it.

Download Paragon Partition Manager 9.0. I was able to partition the sd card with a ext2 partition on windows vista with this program and move all my apps to the sd card.
Refering to this post Apps to SD, I have some doubts.
1. Is this similar to the 2GB inaccessible partition on Nexus S ?
2. Is that partition ext3 ?
3. Do apps get installed directly on that and I don't have to install apps on sd as explained in that post ever ?
4. If no, will creating partition and installing apps on it slow down the phone ?
I installed lots of apps from market yesterday so thinking of these things as I have read that installing many apps may slow down the phone.
please clarify my doubts
Have you gone to Settings, Applications and checked how much of your internal memory you're actually using? There's a little bar graph at the bottom of the first screen.
I've got over 130 apps installed and still have almost 600mb free. For most users, on the NS, app storage space isn't going to be a concern. We've got 1gb internal for that.
Also, many apps can be pushed to your sdcard without any hacks required.
The old school apps2sd involves repartioning your sdcard, formatting part of it ext4, then creating symlinks to move apps to the sdcard.
Seems like a lot of work unless you're really short of space already.
All partitions on the internal storage space are ext4 or yaffs2...no ext3 on the NS stock,
Thanks. So I shouldnt be really about that
But will installing many apps slow down my phone ? How do I stop some apps from starting automatically in the background ?

I wouldn't worry about it until it becomes a problem, if you know what I mean. If you install a lot of BIG game applications that don't let you move to sdcard from the Applications manager, you might start to run out of room, but I've only seen one person in this forum state that he was filling cramped, and he has 300+ apps, including large games if I recall correctly.
Having a bunch of apps installed should not slow down your phone just because they're installed.
If a bunch of them are active in the background either intentionally or not, that might cause some slow down, but it's just not a real problem on Android 2.2+ in my experience.
Android's memory intentionally loads apps up in advance so they're ready and waiting when you want to use them. They usually just sit there using zero cpu until you give them something to do. It is best to avoid TASK KILLERS, they will screw you up more than help you in general.
If you really feel the need to stop certain apps from being loaded automatically at the phone's discretion, there's an app called AutoStarts in the Market that lets you block apps from loading automatically. There are other apps like that one. They require you to be rooted to use them.
Figured it would be good to see how much interest there is in it so maybe a dev will see the point of taking it on.....
Whether I personally use enough apps to fill up internal memory or not, A2EXT is a nice option to have and I miss it. I remember in the past, when implented properly, I had apps on ext and when I would install a rom the apps I had on ext would already be waiting for me on first boot rather than having to wait for them to redownload from the market or restore from Titanium. My vote is yes, if a dev is willing to spend some time to bring that feature to us it can only enrich our experience and would be welcome.

Id prefer a data2ext that also takes none vital system app files and places them on a partition in the sd card, and ability to make the extension around 2 or 4 gigs, for those of us with 32 gig sdcards that can afford the lost space. with dual mount sd card function should never have to worry about removing or mounting the sd card to where its unreadable to the system. thats my vote
I've never really used A2SD even with my G1, however, having all my apps on a fresh install does seem like a nice feature. Personally, the internal memory is more than enough for me.
I guess its more of a nuisance than anything though (regarding installing apps on fresh boots).
Yes.
1) Make easier backups with A2EXT.
2) A2EXT loads faster than the laggy A2FAT.
3) You can always resize the partitions via Gparted.
4) Unlocks the full potential of Android devices.
Anyone who has an argument against A2EXT should stick with the iPhone.
Absolutely A2EXT,Data2EXT is very nice. being able to have all the apps and data ready to go for the same 15-40 apps with data i use on every rom.
depending on which rom im using equals more or less, but that would make things alot faster.
but its still fun individually installing each one.
Ive had this phone for a couple months now and have been doing more reading and research and have just begun to flash all the roms. having a few of them now, it would be nice to have A2EXT,DATA2EXT.
I thank everyone for their hard work and have a great day!! (baby cries gotta run)
sorry for the newbish question, but in Settings->Applications->Manage Applications, what does the "Move to SD Card" option do? Is that only to move the app's data to the SD Card? I've never used it before.

Cyanogen explains it best. A2SD is where you move it to a part of the SD card formatted to EXT format. What Google calls "A2SD" is the result of a symlink-at-best feature that forces a placeholder for each app on the phone's internal memory with the added drawback that (unlike the real A2SD), when mounted to the hard drive, the apps on the Fat partition are unusable.
There was actually a "no" vote? What does it matter to the people who don't want it?

I'm surprised people actually care enough to vote "no." If you don't want A2EXT, let the grown-ups who know how to set it up partition their own SD cards and run the apps off of the EXT partition.
ok so i looked in the forums and from the looks of it cm9 n cm10 and all other roms cant or wont make a work arounf for the inability to move app to the ext sd card i read that their someone making some kind of script but i am an idiot and cant understand but i do know how to read and follow instructions, but i dont see how one can apply these work around for the ext sd card fix unless their is a fix in the works and im jus being impaitent, i know people may think 4gb is alot but the fact this tablet can handle big gaming app it takes up alot of space fast. if have a memory card only for only multimedia, it kind of defeat android purpose for innovation when it was the only phone capable of putting apps on a ext sd card, any advise would be appreciated thanks..

I'm rooted, and downloaded GLtoSD (GL2SD) from the market.
It's a 1-2-3 app. Install the app, download the contents of the game/app, load gl2sd, open the menu, click move app, then select the app you want to move, if it's able to be moved it can be. I love it.
I looked into other apps, and other solutions, and this one was the least complex of them all. Sorry I do not have a link handy, I been drinking a bit lol
Been in your boat though, and wanted to help. Give it a shot!

I know that there's been a lot of issues with devices released with ICS (note 10.1 included!) where you can no longer get your application data to your SD Card. I'm just wondering if anyone has found a way around this? I'm running unrooted stock ROM at the moment (Haven't even had it for two weeks. As much as I want to root, I need to wait and see if a problem arises. ) so I'm unable to figure out a way to do it myself, right now.
Hopefully someone's found a way to achieve this, because 11GB of memory just isn't enough for the massive amount of data tablet apps contain.
In another thread, cunfus-ed, enlightened me to a way to move some apps and app related stuff to external . I was able to move some, not all. I'm unrooted by the way. Go into the my files app. Simply locate your apps and click hold and drag into the external sd folder. Voila.

This really shouldn't work, if it does. That's just moving data from your device to SD, rather than creating some sort of link for the app to follow. :s

True, lmao. I was looking more for a way of getting the app data to my SD with the apps still able to use it. Or hot swapping the main memory for the external.
Im just a simple guy with simple solutions. I don't use a lot of apps. I do photo editing and kitchen design mostly so it works good enough for me. I hear where you are coming from its not a true fix.
