Any way to hide pictures from Gallery? - G1 Android Development

Okay before you get all up in arms, not for dirty photos. I figure I could download photovault, but I'd really rather not, as it's not too huge of a deal.
Basically, I have a bunch of icons on my phone for use on my desktop, but I don't particularly like when I have to pick a photo for a contact or for a frame, having to scroll through my hundred or so icons.
I guess what I'm asking is has anyone found a way to hide certain folders from the gallery? Or, does anyone know how to make an icon pack, for dxtop, better home?
: )
Thanks

rename the folder to have a . in front of the name. This hides files in linux.

ITS easy, rename the floder you put picture, for example kkk。now you can rename this to .kkk。 you would find its been hidden in Gallery。

But will I still be able to access them in order to use them on my desktop?

Yea, it should have been "blk". jk, but yea, just add a . the beginning of the folder.

When I tried to rename my folder, Vista wouldn't let me. It said, "must have a valid filename" or something like that...
any help?

Download a file manager off the market, i rpefer astro and just rename it through your phone

LOL! Yeah, most us folks in the south are still a little sensitive about that and with good reason.

Only one issue with the period method. Ironically your phone will be a little *****y. When you do this, existing icons will be hidden from gallery and still work. Just remember to put NEW icons in download or some other folder to set them, then move them to the hidden folder. Icon and other picture selection screens use the gallery program to display that image selection screen. In other words, if you put new pictures directly in a hidden folder, you cant set them as icons.

There are also some apps on the Market that will create a protected area for pictures that can't be seen by the Pictures app. And yeah, I assume this would be used for your porn collection rather than your icons.

If it's a sense widget, then you need to adb push it rather than install it.
screw the widget. I want that notification bar!
know where to get it?

well i asked a question right before you posted "answer:" and your "answer:" had nothing to do with my question. what an @$$h0le you are. or atleast made yourself look to be. anyways, its not a big deal.
You can follow these steps to pull the smoke news widget out of the smoked theme mentioned. These steps also apply for the news widget. A lot of the time I do not have ADB accessible and this method can be completed with only the phone.
- Save the smoke.zip file to your sdcard (this is the smoke theme already mentioned in this thread)
- Open Root Exporer and navigate to /system/app/ and mount it as R/W
- Move the stock geniewidget.apk to the SD card (/sdcard) in case you want it back later.
- Now navigate to the smoke.zip file, press on it and choose view.
- Navigate to the smoke.zip /system/app/ folder and copy the geniewidget.apk to your phones /system/app folder.
- Most important part now - long-press on the file and click on permissions from the pop-up menu. Permissions should be "read" for user/group/others and "write" for only user. All other boxes unchecked. If you don't do this it wont load.
- Restart phone and the transparent widget should be good to go.
This wont work for all apps - so make sure to keep the originals if you are getting creative. You can apply this across handsets, but try to stay away from system-dependent apps like cameras and power control widgets.

Im the asshole but you answered to something that had nothing to do with you right? I never was answering your question, I was answering to the OP obviously what you do when you post in a thread...you respond to the original post but ok, i guess so... maybe next time.
Anyway, he updated the app again so anybody who decided to use the app in the link i posted, go and update. =)
I'm just about ready to give up. I have been trying for a couple of days to make mine look like the pick I posted. Can't seem to get it done. It's really not that important, just thought it would match the other sense widgets a little better.
This is as close as I could get. For some reason I cannot get rid of that blue background in the widget, must not be editing the right file.

To get more icons you'll have to download an icon pack from the market. Just do a search for icon pack in the market or appbrain.

You can literally change everything about the appearance of your phone. Any apk file can be opened and modified. If you download an app from the market, but you don't like the icon, you can open the apk and replace the icon.png You can also change the color of your menus etc. It is a complicated process and you'll have to learn how to work with apks, edit 9.png files, and even work with XML files and HEX colors. I actually gave up on themeing because it ended up taking up too much time...but if you're willing to jump in and get your elbows dirty you can change anything you want about your phone's appearance, and it actually is a really rewarding experience. To get started, just search the forum for a "guide to themeing".
You can also ask some of the themers for advice by sending them a private message. That's the best way to learn, if someone is willing to teach you.
Hope that helps.

Well I thing i got changing the icons down. an when i open the xml files in a hex editor theres too meny numbers, any simpler way to change colors by chance?
Im really surprised that kno one has been able to evelope an app that just gives a list of colors an icons an what not an u just click ok, if i was developer savy anuff id tottally have an app editor in the works
Just realized somthing, to change icons, wouldnt it be smarter to just open the apk in root explorer an over write the icon, insted of moving it to ur computer an possibly making it not install back on ur phone?
nah its a lot deeper than that, because after you open and edit an APK the .apk file must then be re-signed it's like it's digital signature... or it will not install on your phone... There are a few apps out that help a lot with the theming process.. and as for .xml files i think they are encrypted so you would have to use an xml decrypter and edit it then encrypt it again and add it back into the apk and resign the file... all these topics are covered in various parts of the forums though... here's a link with lots of information that can help you along your way...

xml files in android are not encrypted they are just compile form of xml. Its a space saver thing.
As for having a program to edit things in xml files on the fly its might be possible but since xml its soooo generic and there is really no way to make a program that would go through an xml file and change the things that represent colors and value etc... Something like this could be done for say a framework but then it would really be only for that framework or apk.
I copied the browser from system app to my sd an opened it with 7zip i didnt extract it i just moved the icon i wanted to the corect spot. an moved it back over to system app an copied over the old now browser is gone y wont it install :S

Can you not just save the file and convert to jpg if required?
Exactly. Just download the pic and put it into your phone. Choose the file in your wallpapers settings and you are done. An icon is just a smaller version of a picture, it's not any different from a normal wallpaper file.
But I'm afraid that there will be a lot of pixel
up
not sure what the problem is. Download the image. Its already in png format(which is good since it supports transparency, and is optimal for icons)
Then use a launcher like apex or nova to change the icon of your desired app to the one you downloaded. Also its 96x96 pixels so nothing needs to be resized.

It is physically impossible to stretch this small image without it ending up being distorted by the small number of original pixels in the picture. I am sorry, but you are going to have to use an image like this:

You can't open the link because I put some "spaces" in there so I could post it here. xda does not allow new members to post outside links, only if they have over 10 posts on the forums. so just copy the link and look for the 2 or 3 spaces I put in there, delete them and look at the picture, because I think I found something really close to what you are looking for!
And there is no software that manages to do that. There is a feature on Photoshop or similar software that I know of that is able to reduce pixelation although it is not as good as you might think and it definitely can't make a small picture like this into a usable wallpaper...
Yes I forgot a space ! It's closed but not the same. Thank you for your help

[Q] Missing "Google" icon

Hi,
I've just installed the Android 4.3 cyanogenmod (cm-10.2-20130909-UNOFFICIAL-crespo) on my Nexus S and everything is ok, but I don't have the "Google" icon. This is the icon from where you can launch the google applications like gmail, play, etc. Is it in the 4.3 at all? It is very useful for me and would like to use it.
Thanks,
Did you flash gapps?..

Looks like you're talking about the folder on the homescreen with all the Google apps in it?
If so, you can make your own easily. Put one app on the homescreen. Then drag another app on top of it and it will magically become a folder. You can add a whole bunch of apps to the folder in the same way, rearrange them however you like, and change the name of the folder to whatever you want.
