Tutorial on going from JFv1.42 RC33 to ADP1.5? - G1 Android Development

I want to try out the latest build, and i see all the downloads and announcements and praises, but does anyone have any instructions for updating? Thanks

download adp1.5 and put in on the sdcard as update.zip do a wipe and then alt s to update. if u have apps on the sd then just re-do the symbolic links if not then you will have to install them again.

Please help!!! G1 wont boot

So I finally rooted my phone this weekend. And today I wanted to take advantage of some cool themes. So I downloaded the Macdroid v2.2 ADP1.1 theme and renamed it update.zip. Now my phone is stuck on the android boot screen. It just continues to load and load... I have tried wiping my phone and it still reloads and reloads. I can change the update file because there is no way to mount my SD card. Any suggestions? Please?
I guess what im really asking is, is there any way to mount my sd card without actually pressing the mount tab in the notifications menu? My pc recognizes the removable disk, but will not let me look at the sd card. This way I can change the update.zip
Do you have a card reader? Or something else that takes an sd card, such as a digital camera?
were you using ADP or RC30 on your phone. If you were using modified RC30 and installed ADP theme, that would mess it up.
If you followed instructions to root, you should have also update boot with HardSPL and Not sure ifyou made a backup. if you did, you can fastboot recover it.
Otherwise, redo everything and you may need to use another method to load files on your Sd card.

Yeah, at home. I was thinking that I would need to delete it from the card that way.

I had this same problem myself, once you access your card, put the RC29 back on it and flash it back. It will delete everything, making it factory default. You can then follow these steps again to re-root your phone.

I did follow the instructions correctly. I know this because I had already installed other themes before this one. Before I installed the theme update I did move all the files still on my card that I needed to gain root to a separate file on my card. Could that be the reason?

If you can boot into recovery mode, you can use adb to push files to your sdcard.
for example
adb shell mount /sdcard
adb push JFV1.41_ADP1.1.zip /sdcard/update.zip

Thanks but i did not see anything there about if you lose your caches link to the sd card after update.
My symbolic links for the caches were still there after the update. Might want to go into adb shell and check.

you will only lose the link if you wipe the /data .. the update.zip does not wipe the links by default .. the problem however .. if you did more than just the cache files and moved /data/app to /system/sd/app then the update.zip will prevent your EXT2 partition from loading .. thus the need to have the three key elements .. init.rc, mountd.conf, & /system/sd .. just the cache links will remain without a wipe

[Q] Update.zip not applying for some reason

I for some reason cannot apply any update.zip and can't figure out why. Something as simple as creating a theme with Zipthemer and it won't apply. Fjfalcon's fm or Kahl's Metamorph patch, both a no go.
I put the zip (not unzipped) in the openrecovery/updates folder. Go into recovery and apply updates, pick the one I want, apply it, wipe dex and cache partition, reboot and nothing. My /system after most non-essentials are picked out shows around 28mb free.
Any thoughts? I can flash roms all day long and apply nandroid images but for some reason the update.zip will not work for me.
That's quite strange. I guess I would be most suspicious that something is corrupted on your sd card. Have you tried reinstalling OpenRecovery from a fresh download? Or maybe try Androidiani. You could put the sd card in your computer directly and check it for errors or maybe just backup and reformat. Have you tried any of that?

Might try to reinstall Openrecovery (again) and see if that works. SDcard did get corrupted awhile ago, so I had to totally wipe it clean and start over. Talk about a pain in the arse b/c music and videos.
You have a fresh copy of OR?
I'd just jump to androidiani. http://code.google.com/p/androidiani-openrecovery/downloads/list
It's a replacement OpenRecovery folder and an update.zip that you place in the root of the sdcard (next to OpenRecovery.zip)
Sent from my Milestone XT720 using XDA Premium App
So that worked well, but now what is all the new things in the OR? I'll hit the thanks button when I get home on my PC. There are a few in xda that really come through. I appreciate it very much.

Files

I was wondering if there is a way to download a rom or kernel and save the zip to my SD card then go in recovery and basically install it, without having to use my computer. I can move the zip file to my SD card from my phone but it never appears on the list to install when I go into recovery.
Sent from my LG-P999 using xda premium
Of course dude, very easy.
1) Make sure you have CWM 5.0.2.0 installed via NVflash. There's a very easy-to-follow post on this in the dev section called "one-click nvflash installer."
2) Download the rom to your phone. This usually works from whatever link you were going to use to download it on ur pc.
3) Turn off your phone.
4) Hold Volume down and power until you see the second LG logo (The prettier one).
5) In CWM, do whatever wipes you need to do. If you're updating, wipe cache and dalvik, if moving from LG-based to AOSP or vice versa do a full wipe.
6) Select 'Install zip from sd card' (or internal sd card depending on where you downloaded the zip file earlier).
7) If its an AOSP rom, also install gapps.
8) Reboot.
9) Done!
EDIT: Sorry I just read your post more carefully. I guess you don't have the latest version of CWM because you say you cant find the file to flash once in recovery, right? The latest version (5.0.2.0) allows you to flash a zip from both your external and internal sdcards so try updating to that.
ohhh, no no no, i think you may have misunderstood my question lol. im already rooted and flashed and everything im just wondering if there is a way to download a rom on my phones browser and have it go to my sd card and then i just go to recovery and install from zip. i tried but the zip file never appears.
When you download something it gets saved in a folder called "Download" in your SD card just go to that folder and it will be in there
Nope not there

You either have an old version of CWM, which is showing you the wrong sd card, therefore causing you not to find the rom zip, or you have the latest version and didn't know that it offers both internal and external support.
If you don't have 5.0.2.0 - update.
If you do - check both internal and external sd cards.

Installed CM11 - Play store not working

Hello,
I installed CM11 on my HTC explorer following the instructions on this link
XDA - HTC CM11
I successfully installed CM11 and rebooted the device. Then I rebooted into recovery to flash gapps zip and do everything as instructed. But the google play store did not appear even after flashing.
So I did a fresh CM11 install and then gapps again. Still it did not appear.
Finally, I installed Google Play Store apk from File Manager and let gapps be there.
So now whenever I go to download any app it closes by saying "unfortunately, Google Play Store has stopped" Then it won't open again. So for that I did following
1. remove google account and connect again.
2. disable or enable google play store from all apps.
3. clear cache
4. clear data/cache of downloads or download manager. it makes the app open again, but as soon as downloading an app play store closes.
5. force stop.
I tried opening after each step but google play store won't let me download any app.
Please help!

Remove which apps from system? the zipped ones or the google apk or the extracted files? and how to remove? bhai can you please clarify the folder/file and how to reach there.
About the steps in the link you gave.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=48772404
It says partition order should be SD-SYSTEM , SD- DATA
how do I make sure it is in that order? I downloaded the 2_sd_ext.zip, but what do I do with those files? no instructions in that thread. I really don't understand what steps to follow and how.

Open the rom zip go to system folder delete cm file manager.apk LatinIME.apk repack the zip now flash the rom.
Now you can flash the gapps.
2nd method i gave you is for increasing the system memory..
During the development stage there was problem in mounting ext partitions in this rom so this method was made..
SD-System is the portion in which your system partition will b increased and you can flash gapps without deleting anything..
SD-Data is the internel memory of the device.
You can use a partition wizard for creating SD-System and SD-Data.
After connecting the card to pc you can see the drive of it..
1. Now open the wizard.
2.Delete that partition.
3.Create a parrtion of fat32 that will b size you will get for storing music etc.
4.Create a partition of size 500 MB which will b SD-System.
5.Create a partition of size 1GB or more SD-Data (Your internal memory)
6.Now apply.
You will get SD-System and SD-data.

Ok so what you mean is to unzip CM11 for htc explorer. goto system/app/ and delete CMFileManager and LatinIME apk files. Zip the files again.
then Reboot into recovery
Format System (not wipe option but format option !!!)
Format Data
Format Cache then Format Boot
Wipe Data/Factory reset (1st option in wipe/format menu)
Wipe Dalvik Cache
and finally flash the new ROM without those 2 files.
after that reboot normally and then download paragapps. Reboot into recovery again and flash paragapps.
Now I have two questions:
1. Can I use this gapps from XDA forums htc explorer CM11 thread or do I exclusively need paragapps?
2. Will either gapps or paragapps make play store work? if not then since the file manager is not there how can I even install the play store apk?
Thanks for your help bhai!

Best thing i do is i create a copy of the rom zip in other folder or drive delete the files from the zip itself so no need of packing it again..
The main problem for playstore not getting installed is system memory is full after you delete the apk files you will get the playstore..
Sd system and sd data was brought into scene because system partition was full due to which gapps was not working and the kernel was not mounting the ext..
You can use gapps provided after deleting the apps..
Plz note for pa gapps to work you need to have sd system and sd data or else it wont work..

No need of creating a partition after deleting those 2 files and no need of pa gapps as well just flash the gapps provided in the post i.e the normal one.. Just make sure you have at least one partition for increasing your internel memory..
If you haven't created any ext partition you can create it through recovery..
No need any partition software..
Check the cm 11 post in that a patch is available flash the patch after setting up your phone.. Your ext partiton will b mounted..
Lastly as the system partiton will b free you can flash the gapps and you will get the play store..

For the patch to work you need a ext partition which can be created using recovery..
In recovery go to advanced-> select partition sd card-> select the size you want-> select swap size 0..
Before creating a ext back up your card cz it will format your card..
Ok now about the keyboard thing instead of deleting LatinIME delete documentsUI.apk
