He didn't do it! I did! - G1 Android Development

Okay, now that you're all curious..
This thread will sum up quickly the last month of hard work, and who deserves the credit. Everyone who deserves serious rep will be in bold, anyone who deserves acknowledgement will be in italics.
- xmoo and his source release a leaked copy of the HTC Magic "system" folder.
- xda members start to frantically get the system folder to boot.
- I go on the forums and try to persuade everyone to listen to me and fail to get anyone to care.
- I decide to take it into my own hands and get that m.f. to run.
* build 4 is released (builds 1,2, and 3 were in house builds until i made the build somewhat usable.)
- barakinflorida suggests that i put open home as the default home application to give you guys a GUI.
* build 4.5 is released
- After 2 days I received an OTA update while testing the 4.5 build and manage to track down where HTC is releasing updates.
- Playing with it for a bit I ported the first successful cupcake build.
* build 5.0 is released
- Some days go by for fixing bugs and sorting stuff out.
- dream_kill shows me how the boot works on the device, and how to fix wifi/bluetooth (simply changing something from sapphire to trout).
- fnord, Darkrift, and I work out how to get apps to sd working on cupcake (cupcake uses vold instead of mountd)
* this is now at build 5.0.1
- an anonymous tipster gives me the system directory to another build based on the vodaphone magic.
- I port that over to the dream again
* G build is released
- Daproy starts building kernels for me with built in ext2 and other goodies, bringing easier apps to sd and other nice features.
- At this point everything is pretty much going pretty smooth, I got a new SPL, new radio, and cupcake is running pretty much on everyones phone. (this was my initial goal, give cupcake to the community )
some days go by...
- Dude compiles the latest cupcake build from source and uses Daproy's, and my, boot image and other pieces (refer to his thread for what exactly) to have a nice working source based build.
- HTC releases ADP 1.5
- I mod ADP 1.5 and release the "root" build.
* ADP1.5H (yes the H stands for haykuro, not HTC.)
- Daproy cooks up a multi-touch kernel for the ADP builds.
- JesusFreke helps me through my compiler troubles and builds the multitouch browser.
* ADP1.5Hr3
this is pretty much it guys. no need to argue.
Me and Dude are friends, he has been very understanding and asks my permission before using any of the parts of my builds.
This is a developers community, and open source supportive.
I want to take a second and make sure everyone understands none of what we have today would be possible if it wasn't for 4 main players.
xmoo releasing the HTC image.
me porting the image.
Daproy building those wonderful kernels.
JesusFreke lending a hand when needed.

I want to thank everyone mentioned above for all of the hard work!!!
Much Appreciated!!!!
Haykuro = greatness!!

Thanks for posting this Hayruko. Those of us that have been following from the beginning (I started with 4.5G) or close to it knew this timeline pretty well, but there seems to be some misconceptions out there now that 1.5 has exploded. Many might think this is a pointless thread, but I like that someone is finally standing up and saying that this isn't a competition between You, Dude, and JF, working fervently to have the best build, but a collaboration between you all and many other hardworking devs, to give us all the best homebrew ROMs available. I wish everyone would stop the "Which is better" or "Just wait until JF gets involved, he'll kill Hayruko's stuff" discussions, pick a build that suits them, and be happy. There's plenty of cupcakes to go around.

Definatly a big thanks to everyone. I don't know what drives some members to shun ANYONE, not just those above for optionally helping them. The idea of Open Source is to help spread knowledge from everyone to everyone. The greatest learning experience. Yourself and among countless others have helped evolve the use of Android and the G1, and there isn't a single person on this forum that shouldn't be grateful for the hard work and countless hours you've slaved to do this work on your own time.
I'm sorry we have some of the members we do here, but on behalf of those that don't wish to speak their names and hide in the darkness.
THANKYOU!!!!!

thank you guys for all the hard work u guys done for us ! XDA DEVELOPERS #1 FORUM ! GOGOGO !

That's actually an interesting build ........... well done guys (& girls?)
Love the work you bring to the community here!

There is no "I" in T-E-A-M!!
Great work! Really Great Work...

People who do this get killed by GOOGLE "thugs"
On a serious note.... Thanks to all who have contributed to the advancement of android!

You guys are all amazing. Thanks for all your hard work.

Maybe you dont understand what open source means, The whole point of android was a open source projects that would remain open and free. Any TRUE open source developer knows and understands this and does the work not to get paid, But to help out a community. Yes there is a way to make money, And yes some people are making money from their apps, But that was never the point of a open source community, People contributed for the common good of the community not to get rich... But i am a capitalist and understand the all mighty dollar...

Lol @ darkrift. Agreed w/all above. Someone recently (don't remember who) brought up how roms are cooked for other HTC phones...and the fact that there are tons of customs for those w/ unique apps for each. We should be celebrating these guys with thanks for providing each something different to the open source community.
Ps. Tehseano I like your new sig.

To all devs who participated.....
THANK YOU ALL FOR YOUR AWESOME WORK!!!! Thank you all for your knowledge & watermelon sized cojones (each), for flashing the first releases & being fearless of the outcome, as well as moving forward at a blazing speed. I sincerely thank you for your hard work, and for making me look cool by being the first person around that I know with a working video camera on their G1!!!!

First and foremost I would to say THANK YOU to all involved.
Second; I imagine you guys are using IRC to keep in constant contact? If not I suggest we put together a IRC room for this board so all can idle, and discuss ideas.

Thank all of you guys...loving my G1 even more...personally I don't know how much I'd like my phone if not for all the mods.
Keep up the great work.
Can't wait until you guys begin compiling 100% custom builds...muahahahhahah...one can hope.

thanks so much guys! it just cant be said enought how much your work is appreciated.. i hated my g1 like a mofo, now i cant think of having any other phone!

Haykuro... TheDudeOfLife... JesusFreke... Where do I go???

I am not complaining about the multiple choices we have now when it comes to cooked, rooted ROMS for the G1. God, no! I love having the choice and can't thank either of the 3 main creators or everyone that's helped make these possible enough. However, even I who have been following the development am at a point where I really don't know which of the builds is right for me, because I can't find a centralized thread explaining the differences. I know differences change with every build released, but I feel going through one thread [kept as uncluttered and free of the "me too" or "can't wait" type comments as possible] would be useful.
I, for example, am still enjoying Hayrkuro's 5.0.2Hr5 build because I refuse to give up the HTC dialer (with T9 support) and I am not sure if any of the newer builds still have it. Do they?
And, again, if someone with enough knowledge of all 3 could provide a detailed comparison of features, that would be great. Keep in mind that, for most people that come here looking for advise, "based on the HTC or Google build" doesn't say much. They'd want to know what the HTC build has that the Google build doesn't, and viceversa.
One more time... To Haykuro, TheDudeOfLife and you, JesusFreke, who started it all, thank you for putting the community first!
They are all based on the 1.5 build from htc. I believe things like the htc keyboard can be pretty easily added to the 2 other builds. They seem to be sharing a lot of the same tweaks as well. I honestly would just go with the newest build by however releases it. Main difference? They come bundled with different apps. Anyone need to correct me on this?
I'm curious if anyone's done a side-by-side comparison of the 3 builds? I, too, am curious as to which one will suit my needs/desires.
Maybe it would be asking too much, but is there any sort of base-line for comparing these builds? I'm going with JF's for now, because it's been changed the least from the original (as far as I've read) but who knows?
It's very difficult to make an educated choice, when all I've read is something like "Awww, diz rom iz da only 1 wurth haven! da udder 1ez suxxorz!" (and yes, I've actually read a post like that one)
I truly enjoy the variety and choices available to us, but is there any real way to compare these builds?
test drive
im a firm believer in to each his own.. on that note the best advice is to test drive the builds for 2-3 days yourself to make that decision effectively im on the dudes .93 and i dont see any other builds being that much of a difference, but like i stated to each his own! everyone has a different liking.. so take the time and test drive the different bulids to give the dev's a fair chance at your personal opinion...
P.S. Dude's will be the only one w/ a default theme by MANUP456!!!. . . . hint-hint
Try all 3 of them and thats that. Everyone will have dif opinions, likes and dislikes. Its not gonna be that difficult to try all 3 of them if you have the time. If you do just make sure you wipe before switching from build to build. My opinion? I tried Haykuros G/ADP and JF, all pretty awesome, for now im sticking with JF. I do miss the transition from the G build though.
Ive been bouncing between all three myself today... We need a app that auto loads each rom of our choice...

Not really like the G build, i am using spare parts and it is nice, if i had a choice i would go with G's. BTW the fade in and out its not bad either, i really liked the shrink and expand from the G's, spare parts its more like shrink, swing then expand, after the swing i dont really like the transition. But im not complaining though, matter of taste i guess.
my understanding of all three builds is just as everyone has stated before...
- they are all builds off of ADP1.5, so as the operating system features go.. they are identical.
- and the apps and accompanying system tweaks are the basic differences between the builds
i like em all n wish there was a list to compare.. but really no build is "completely" done... so just gotta rotate them n find ur match
my main focus now is widgets n cupcake apps
stuck on Hr5 build cant give up the dialer and the pdf viewer loved how fast jf was though

Yeup.
The answer to all of em is.
Load them.
Test them.
Decide for yourself.
Thanks for your feedback, guys.
I'm still hoping someone will answer my question. Does any of these builds have the HTC dialer? If not, is there a way to replace the standard one after installing the ROM?

JacHero 2.6.3 - Deserving of a Compliments Thread

Hello.. My name is Joel.. .and I am a FF'er.. Frequest Flasher... for the last 2 weeks I think I flashed my phone at LEAST once a day... and just wanted to say.. and give a HUGE thanks to Justanothercrowd, Drizzy and anyone else who helped create JacHero.. This latest 2.6.3 version runs by far the best out of all the releases I have tried. It is stable, pretty quick.. has the least amount of lag.. and is overall a GREAT release..
I would have just left a compliment in your release thread.. but It is growing so large, I feel a compliments thread is appropriate and leave the official thread for ?'s and ROM specific talk..
* To the mods.. sorry if this is inappropriate for the section... if you do insist on deleting.. can you at least leave for a short period of time for those that wish to give their thanks!
Thanks to all of the contributors of XDA! You all are great!
Good Work
I tried it, thought it was brilliant, but couldn't get my bluetooth headset working, so in the end had to go back to cyanogen.

well keep a good eye on the hero releases! because soon enough (if you've been watching them anyway) they'll be fixing the bluetooth! its been a huge bugger since the beginning with all of the hero builds, same with the LED lights. so far they can turn on BT via terminal! so thats pretty close!
STAY TUNED! you'll be shocked at how awesome it'll be
Lol I agree with the OP. Absolutely oustanding job by everyone. Cyrowski, db.hates.you. revox, JAC, drizzy, etc...
I like this thread, I want to say thanks but not blow up the dev thread (however this is questionable because this is still the dev sub category in the forum). So to all the developers a big thanks from Seattle/Tacoma Washington! Great work and because of this sort of community and tinkering I will never own an iPhone. It makes having the phone that much more fun =)

To all the developers - great job creating roms, recoverys, themes, etc.
Mainly Haykuro, Jac, db.hates.you., JesusFreke, Drizzy Drake Rogers, Cyanogen, and android.
Good Luck to all of them and keep the updates coming
I have to agree as well. The latest build is working great even on my class 2 memory card. A bit of lag never hurt anyone. The devs have been working tirelessly to give us a build that it stable enough for day-to-day use. I'm sure they still have a few tricks up their sleeves and can't wait to see what's coming down the pipeline.
Big bang!!
Fo sho you devs get a BIG BOOM!!! from you guys knocked it out the park w/ the progress of this ROM kudos to you jac, drizz, cyrowski, db and any one i didnt mention thanks a million!!
also a big thanks from me, been running jachero since version 1, and it has progressed very far
Thanks for all the work of all the great ROM builders, you are all awesome!!
This Thread should've been made a while ago!! Great Job Guys.
Yes...Much Thanks and Praise for well done Roms.
I keeps me from abandoning ship!
I want to put in my thanks for the community, Justanothercrowd"wonderful dev and friend", dbhatesyou, haykuro, barikflorida, chrisag92"crime partner lol", johnnylicios"great friend", and especially To all the supporters "you have all lived your Dream... now its time to become a real HERO" which means you are all gonna get what you want and that is a full functioning Hero for your Dream!
We Promise!....will take some time of course
I would like to also thank all of the DEV. On making my Dream into a HERO lol
wanted to say THANX to all of the great, dedicated work... its been daily updates.. i make themes, havent in awhile but when i did it was hard working alone to put out as many updates as you all have
JAC, been reading ur twitter bak n forth to twisted.. funny **** on there, but glad to see everyone working on the same team instead of competing.
you should be rewarded more so, i say by htc or google, for your accomplishments.. why not add the mods of their phone to their team?

(Calling The Whole Community) - Creation of The Ultimate Rom - (The Community Rom)

Hey Plz read this a creation of a community rom you should be thinking what well:
I am thinking of the creation of the rom called "The Ultimate Rom" for G1/MT3G and hope it also moves onto newer phones as you can see the G1/MT3G is starting to fade as the newer phones begin to be born and because of this I believe we should make a community rom where not only the devs can join in but the community weather it be graphics to sounds I believe we all should be able to join in so I would like to get some help on making it come true I believe there should be a rom we as the community should be happy for that we all chipped in and made something truly amazing ^^
PS: And mods plz don't delete this for being in the Dev section I believe it is about Devs and I would like you to be part of this rom as well ^^
Hoping to start 4th of july so getting everyone ready to put stuff in or ready for it to start ^^
0o ill list down every single person no matter how big this gets up till july 4th and after july 4th and even testing is fine ^^
If it works or not at least we would had tried and at least even if we do fail we have gained knowledge, experience and had fun

Please. We've been down this road before. When the glory and satisfaction of solo or small team ROMs isn't in play, development suffers. We need creative individuals pushing the limits to advance the scene, and unless they have their name on the ROM, things will slow down. This goes for life (free enterprise vs. socialism) and ROM dev.
Also, keep in mind, all the ROMs are community! There are thousands of man-hours of work already in every aspect of Android. The ROMs we see build on all that. This is a solution in search of a problem.

lol I have created over 7 successful roms some in a small team others in a big team lol and it worked out xD and I would disagree check I left a bit ago about a month if that lol and no everyone should get a chance not just one person thats just selfish also I think if one big rom is made we can keep some G1/MT3G users for longer lol we need something new and exciting can't you see that ^^ well whatever you say I will try and continue this IDK if it will work or not THE THING IS EVERYONE WOULD HAVE FUN TRYING ^^
If you are serious about this, I think it's a dumb idea. The best thing about having a rooted Android phone is that you can choose whatever ROM suits you.
Personally, I want a fast Donut ROM. I don't care for all the extra bells and whistles in SuperD/CM4/etc and I don't have any interest in running an Eclair ROM as I don't think they perform well enough on our phones. Given the popularity of OpenEclair/SuperE/CM5, there are obviously other people who feel differently and I expect a vast number of people here wouldn't switch back to Donut if you paid them.
There will never be "The Ultimate ROM" because everyone's needs and wants are different. Just let devs make what they will and let users choose what they want.
i have very little experience in the overall creation of the rom, however i am very willing to learn more and would jump at the opportunity to be of any help, if someone was willing to show me a little bit of how this all works i am positive i can be of great help.
To me I could care less about credit.... I rather help where I can then be selfish... Knowledge isn't a competition, it is a struggle as a group I would love to learn what I don't and Help others where I can Ego is the one thing that could destroy this project ...
SpeedTeam is there whenever you need us....Right K =)

I swear, when I read this, it sounded like you died from lack of oxygen at the end. Please, for the sake of readers, could you use punctuation? Throw a few commas and periods in there.
As for the idea, I would flash a beta version or two, but I can't see this working out as well as some might hope. There will always be disagreements. Some people want 2.1, others, 1.6. Some like SenseUI, and others don't. Words like "perfect" and "ultimate" are very subjective to whoever reads them.
Good idea, probably very hard to execute. Good luck.

I've been trying my hardest contacting many people to get development started with this phone. Since not many Experienced Devs would be looking the way of this phone i've been trying to reach out.
I Contacted AndroidSpin as well and they are very well known android news site (which i check everyday) and managed to get an article out about helping with development with our phone (awsome, thanks AndroidSpin!) See the Article Here
Hopefully in the Near future we will have a working recovery and ROMs/Mods/Themes Rolling out. A Very experienced Dev has Contacted me Back Saying he is Willing to Help but nothing is promised as he doesnt have a Sidekick 4G at hand. But he is willing to make a working recovery for us so lets see what happens .
He will Definitely need testers.. i will be one ofcourse hope others are interested in seeing development stir up over here aswell !
nice to hear about.....i have been checked this 4rum everyday to looking for a news but still......hopefully something will come out soon....:x im willing to be the tester for this as well.....
I just want to say thank you to all of you working on this. As a former Hiptop user and open-source enthusiast, I took issue with the closed platform that Danger had installed on it and ended up ditching it. When I heard the new Sidekicks would be running Android I jumped at the chance to have one, only to find out that development was lacking interest due to the stigma of the old Hiptops as phones for teenagers. It's wonderful to see more people getting interested in this and I hope to help as much as I can in the future. Thank everyone again and happy hacking to you all!
willing to help
I'm very interested in getting development going for this phone as well, I don't have the time or the skill set to cook roms myself but I am more than willing to test and give feedback. I know a lot of devs aren't interested since they spent last year with the galaxy s line of phones and there are new dual cores to play with, but I think this phone is really unique and could definitely have a big following because of the fact that it is soo different than the sea of slabs out there. I hope development picks up, there are plenty of custom roms out there already built for the galaxy s line that would only need to be tweaked to work with this device so hopefully that picks up soon.
I'm very interested in helping with development, came from the G1 and had fun with that. I was trying to figure out how to compile ClockworkMod but because Samsung uses initRamFS rather than a regular makefile, I was unable to figure it out. I'm very open to testing and trying to help as best I can with developing on this phone, feel free to e-mail me if anyone has any need to test anything, I'm always checking my e-mail. sduvick AT gmail.com. For those who understand the compiling of clockworkmod, I would suggest working from the Vibrant version, as the buttons are all mapped right, we just need to add the storage driver so that the sdcard can be mounted.
I would love to be a tester please keep me posted.

+Thanks.
I'm still stock and would be willing to help some dev's

So exciting

yyyyyyyyyyeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeessssssssssssssssssssssssss
Soo.... Does anyone think we could see some pure AOSP action now? Or someone could update the kernel for CM7? As you will see in general someone -whom I suspect is not alone - would love an AOSP ROM on our HTC Doubleshot.
Maybe this kernel isn't that good as we suppose...

Well.... What did u expect? we don't have an ICS ROM in our future that we have been made aware of, and it is truly great news as this is something that has made many a dev stray away from this device - now we might be able to get CM7 stable - and others to work off of CM7 such as blahblah
Good news nevertheless
We need to get CM7 STABLE ASAP
We may be late in the running, but that doesn't mean we still can't get merged into the main tree

Its worse than you thought... The source code was released a really long time ago. This is just an updated kernel, so the real reason for lack of development isn't because the source code wasn't available. :/

Updated source is awesome though. Tried to get it earlier and couldn't - can't on shift and will be working straight until Friday afternoon so won't have a chance to try again for a few days.
Any percieved lack of development is due to people not putting any effort into it - everyone who cries about a lack of development should do something about it instead of waiting for someone else to do so.
Why come here if you don't want to get into dev, worse, come here and complain about yourself not doing anything? Kinda silly.
Whenever I see people complain about a lack of development I wonder why they would basically make fun of themselves? It gives me a laugh at their expense...

Yeah i just got the source downloaded because it matches the new ota I'm running now, I've never seen what a dual core source looks like, or if I'll even be able to compile a kernel for this device, I've only compiled a few for the EVO shift, which was straight forward with a little help from my boy drob...who knows o may get it to boot ha-ha.......nope I fudged something in my toolchain It's broke....again.....LOL

That link is for the toolchain you need, i've been hosting it on dropbox for a while until I get it over to a more permanent host.
I can walk you through it later if you want.
I have it written up on how to set up your linux environment and make changes, including versioning instructions, just haven't found the time to polish off a part of it and add it to the dev reference yet.
Got a whole space reserved for the how to from start to finish on making kernels for the doubleshot, and i've already walked people through it with no kernel dev experience so if you've done it for another device it'll be a cakewalk.
I'm eating breakfast now and gotta run out to another job, and going straight from there to dodgeball practice, then work again tonight and from there right to the job i'm about to do again tomorrow this time, so tomorrow night i'm doubtless going to sleep - maybe as early as saturday evening I could go through it with you on IRC if you are interested.
Otherwise I hope to have that in the dev ref next week, work permitting.

I might have my little one on Saturday night so that maybe a no go for then, the tool chain I currently have is 4.4.1, because anything newer for the speedy breaks a ton during the compile.....I changed some commands around for ****s and giggles and got a zimage in arch/arm/boot so I split it with the ota ramdisk and I'm just gonna try....if that goes south I'll setup your tool chain....thanks blue your like the DoubleShot dictionary....
Also I'm gonna grab one of your kernel zips for test flashes if that's ok

Hey I'm not complaining, and I am working on it! I just have to balance between school and work and learning how to build cm7/cm9 from source.
You can check out a little bit of what I've been working on github.com/mafischer

Lol no worries my friend, was a general comment and not aimed at you in particular, just a perspective I wanted to put out there and you were the first opportunity to do so.
I still haven't found the time to get git set up and learn how to use it - that whole life getting in the way of living thing. Given you have git going that makes you a more responsible dev then I in my book -
@ strapped: all my work available is a contribution to the open source community at large, and the members of XDA in particular. If any of it can be useful, especially as a teaching tool, I wholeheartedly encourage it!

I've been here since i preordered my doubleshot... I just haven't had time to work on much of anything, so there's no point in advertising to the community that I'm gonna work on things that may or may not ever get finished. I don't want to spread false hope or anything.
I am however, graduating in may; I'm going to be working over at walmart isd for a summer internship, and I should have more time on my hands once school is over!
How integrated is the Sense stuff into the kernel? As I understand it, we've had trouble removing the Sense underpinnings from the operating system to get it working with things such as Sixaxis. I'm aware that this is entirely a lack of understanding on my part.
I would quite love to get involved in building a ROM myself, perhaps even setting up CM9 from scratch. I just have no idea how to get started. I've mucked around with custom kernels and embedded linux (not android) devices in the past, but I'm not sure how that knowledge would apply to this system. I also have no history of proper programming languages or anything like that. I'm vaguely familiar with how to compile things with the ARM toolchains.
I'm also a tad nervous about bricking the device by writing to a memory location that I really shouldn't be touching.

Sorry for quoting the whole post just to address one thing, but in regards to sixaxis I'm sure it's a safe bet that if one were to simply replace the stock bluetooth stack with the one kornyone used for cm7 in my bulletproof rom it would work fine, and I doubt much other, if any modification would be necessary.
I haven't had time to try, and truthfully i'd rather build my own so am kinda intentionally not trying - I am more interested in the project then just jumping into a solution.
It really depends on what you are trying to do - some sense things can be replaced with relatively little effort, other things are so interwoven it would take considerable effort and time to unravel, reverse engineer and implement a new solution.
A lot of people have been working on different parts of unravelling sense since back in august, and around the middle of that month we got s-off and really started digging in.
There is a considerable knowledge base lurking here to address this kind of stuff if people make it known they are working on things - dig back through the history of the device here at XDA and you can catch a glimpse of it and get some direction on who you can approach when you hit a roadblock, depending on what kind of roadblock it is.
It's better for us as a community to have that kind of knowledge out on the public forum, but there's much more here then what face value suggests.
I've been trying to get that kind of stuff and a general 'start here' knowledge base built in the developers reference stickied here in dev, reading through that would be a good place to start getting oriented on devving for the dubleshot.
I just go through some crazy work cycles and sometimes can't be around much for a time here and ther, so my contributions come in groups and gaps.

It doesn't matter whether or not you finish. Status updates would be nice though. At least that way people can know what you're up to, and they may even be able to help you and vice versa.
No one here is demanding an ETA or even a completion at all. We're all in for the fun of it.
Either way I think I can safely speak for everyone when I say, we're excited to see what you got cooking

I've been trying to go through the dev reference that you posted and track down as much scattered information as I can, but I'm still not quite sure what I'm doing. Alas.
Regarding bluetooth: would the gingerbread stack be compatible with ICS?

Well what I'm currently up to is making a stable version of cm7 for the doubleshot. I have made lots of progress as far as learning all the tools necessary to compile android from source, which is a relatively simple task. The not so simple part is trying to put together like a puzzle, the source code from other devices. I've hit some roadblocks and I'm currently asking some devs for help, but while I'm at it I guess I can ask for help here on xda.
