does any1 have any idea if moving the dalvik-cache to the sd card is a bad idea? i did it once and after that i did a nandroid backup and i believe it bricked my phone.
Does moving the dalvik-cache to your sdcard prevent you from doing a secure nandroid backup?
thx in advance for any helpful tips/advice
I moved it based on the instructions in the ADP1.5H Build thread, but it didn't work for me. My G1 just froze at the Tmobile G1 screen. Didn't even get to the updated ANDROID flash screen.
I had to do a wipe and reboot to get it working again.
A few people have reported getting it to work and freeing up the full 71MB of internal memory, but it didn't work for me.
Let me know if you find a solution.

I'm in the same boat as you, I could never get it to work :/
I believe you must have a apps2sdcard build for this to work...
Yes you need an app2sd rom. I done mines on adp1h1.5
The first time I started the phone it took like 5mins so I rebooted it in the middle of the android screen then it took another 5mins then finaly booted with only using 12mb
Moving dalvik-cache works fine, I do it all the time. One thing to keep in mind is that after u moved it, nandroid backup will not back it up. So if you have multiple builds backed up like G H and adp builds and u put the dalvik cache in the same place on the sdcard you may run into problems when reverting back to other diffeeent builds. I always put them in different places on the card so I don't have problems with that.
I've been trying to movie dalvik-cache as well and I can't get past the G1 Loading screen. I was fine on 5.0.2Hr5-A2SD. I went from that to ADP1.5Hr2-A2SD last night and I couldn't get it to link with my apps on the sd. Did i have to start with r1 first or what? When i try to access my sd card from my pc while its in my phone i get a message saying prepare sd card and then it doesn't do anything it won't mount. Any suggestions?
It's strange. I have been able to move my apps to the SD card with no problem. I tried the move the dalvik-cache with the AppsToSD app and it worked..... once.
I had to wipe my phone, so I re-ran the AppsToSD app again and moved the dalvik-cache. That's when the problems started. None of my programs worked after that. I tried a reboot and it it froze at the G1 screen for about 10 minutes. I pulled the battery wiped to get it to a bootable state.
SHould i have let it continue booting longer?
Any idea on what I might be doing wrong?
Thanks!
Its probably best to cp the dalvik cache, then reboot. After it starts up again, rm the davlik cache and then ls. Then reboot again.
Doing it all in one shot seems to cause problems.

So this method worked for you?
I'll give it another shot when I get home tonight. Thanks for the advice.
I had /data and dalvik moved on JFvMOD and it worked great.... then I got a random reboot during downloading an app and it fried my EXT2 partition. Haven't ran apps, /data or dalvik since. I wait till the official JFvMOD 1.5 shows up.
rm * in dalvik-cache in your sd should suffice.
a better way is to mv the old dalvik-cache to a new name, so you can quickly go back to your old system. (mv only involve one inode change, much faster and safer)

So i managed to root and flash to JF 1.5 ADP then to lucidREMs 1.5 Apps2SD with my baseband version being 2.22.19.26I. It all booted up fine and everything is running fine, love cupcake btw. Then when i go to terminal and hit in the commands;
su
lucid app
lucid data
lucid dalvik
It does all of that but then if i get to the home screen or try to click home my phone just freezes and loops the "android" screen, the new one.
Anyone know a solution? Ive tried alt-w then alt-s a few times and still it freezes after apps to sd.
Thanks

Your SD Card is not formatted properly.
.
I had the same type of problem last night with my apps to 2 sd. in order to get the phone to fully boot i had to do a wipe (ALT+W). I never could get the apps to SD to work correctly so if it works for you please let me know how you did it. I ensured the app and app-private folders were empty on my phone and sd cards EXT2 partition, now i see the apps in both places even though i didnt copy them. new apps appear to install in both places as well and my internal memory is still being used.

Having the exact same issue. I am coming from RC33 with Apps on SD. I wiped and installed 1.5 without issue. However, when I try to update the links (lucid app, lucid data, lucid dalvik) to pull my apps off my SD, I get the same thing as Daf. I considered that my card wasn't partitioned correctly but the apps used to run off my sd card just fine so is it possible the format changed merely by flashing 1.5? I am out of ideas
It's not my SD card as i know its partioned with EXT2 and FAT and worked perfect when i was running on RC9 with Lucids mod. Im glad im not the only one, i guess we'll have to wait until we can find a fix but for now stick with our internal memory
Yeah, it happened to me when I try to use any type of method that's out there with JF 1.5 ADP build when trying to move the caches. No one replied when I asked, so I assume there is no solution or people just don't like helping. I tried to search the forum also, but that's not much of a help when I searched last time.
Funny thing is my gf's phone has this issue as well but my phone does not. No matter which way I try to get the apps 2 sd it won't take. Although hers did work with lucids modified 1.5 but only for a short while (1 day) then went into boot loop. Maybe it's the phone, which I suspect might be the case with hers.
So about 2 weeks ago I decided to root my phone. It was awesome to be able to run Cupcake before anyone and have root access. About a week ago I decided to move all my Apps2SD and my cache and dalvik cache as well.
All was going well until I went to text message my friend. All of a sudden my phone locked up and I had to do a battery pull to restart it. Since then when my phone boots Message will crash automatically and I cannot use Messaging or ChompSMS to send a text. I cannot attach or post the log of my issue, but can send it if you have an idea of what may be causing this. Your help is greatly appreciated. I also just have one more question:
1. I am going on vacation in a few days. If this were to happen on vacation (while my apps were on my SD card), what could I do to start fresh? Could I just go into the bootloader and do an ALT+W and then ALT+S with JF1.5 as update.zip on the root of my SD Card?
That happened to me. I repaired my ext2 partition through ubuntu and it works fine now.
I created my EXT2 partition with SDSplit from my phone. Not sure if that has a repair option -- what did you do to "repair" your EXT2 parition/
Thanks.
My other question was if I wanted to just start fresh, could I just put JF1.5 as update.zip on the root of SD card and do an ALT+W and ALT+S or will this mess stuff up?
I ran a checkdisk on the partition from within linux
So ive been trying to get apps2sd and i have succesfully done it by using apps2sd2 from the market to partition my card and then i followed the steps by Mailman below and it worked..all my apps were in the sd etc with 73 MB free...but when i click on market...it gives me an option that there is no connection when in fact i do and 2 seconds after it showa the force close message.. anyone have any idea how to fix this?
I had the same issue, had to do a full data wipe to fix it.
well seems that a full data wipe fixes it, but then when i input the commands in the terminal emulator
lucid app
lucid data
lucid dalvik
so i can get everything to the sd card it starts doing the same thing again..any ideas what is causing it?
I'm unfamiliar with the method you're using to get your apps on your SD card - mine are running on the SD card also, but I used the good ol' symlink method to do so...
It would appear your marketplace can't access your apps, or, is being locked out of something - perhaps a permissions issue on your sd partition? I had that issue when I first set up mine. All the apps were copied over with the same user/group and the market place freaked out.
The only way I was able to fix it was to copy all my apps off the sd partition to my computer, do a full datawipe, nuke all my apps, and reinstall them.
I set up a shell script that took the contents of ~/apps/*.apk and sent each to adb install, on its own line, and automated the whole thing. Took about 3 minutes to reinstall my 80 or so apps, and it restored all the app permissions to what they were supposed to - market didn't have a problem afterwards.

I have found my problem. This works great. I can't have data on my SD or it will be really sluggish. I redid the flash and the commands, but left out "lucid data" and the phone has 72MB free and feels fast again.

Don't move the data and everything should work fine.
i see what your saying. ill have to try that out, but now it seems that after i wiped my data and pressed home+back to reboot my phone it is stuck at the T mobile G1 screen and doesnt want to do anything at all anymore...it just got worse.any way to fix this? ove tried wiping again and i formatted my dscard so no update to reinstall..what should i do?
just wait... when you wipe under the new builds, it may take 10mins to boot for the first time.
also I don't know how it is possible to do app2sd with terminal emulator. when you rm dalvik-cache or app that program should crash before the shell script or command finish
I had this happen as well.. more than once.
And each time it was a result of moving the "data" over to the SD card.
I finally learned my lesson... and my phone is now solid.
Hi,
My experience on 5.02 h is that the data move does not work correctly also.
I have moved the :
apps
apps-private
davik-cache
without any problems.
85 apps installed and 61 megs free with this method.
Browser and market cache cleared 1st.
I found this to be an issue only when I had tried to make my EXT2 partition too big (Over 2GB). Exact same error, moving data to the SD, Market crash. The problem was tied to moving the data though.
I had the same problem. It apeard after I installed TA utility.
The problem is that Market is looking for it's cache directory and can't find it. In my case it's looking for it on the SDcard and I have to make the directory myself: /sdcard/cache/market.
If you have not attempted to move the Market cache to SD you might want to see if you have a /cache/market in your internal memory, and if not create it.
It should solve your problem. (worked for me)
im having the same problem too.. the Application section doesn't work for me, but im able to still go into the Game section. i tried adding a cache folder to the SD still doesnt work
Hey, so I've been on Dexter's 2.2 for a few weeks now and love it, but the oddest thing happened last night. The phone locked up so I had to do a battery pull (this isn't an unusual occurrence), but when it restarted, most of my apps were gone- including my launcher, my keyboard, my widget apps... A few are still there, in addition to the ones that came with the phone, but most have apparently vanished.
Yet when I look at the internal memory, it hasn't changed- there's still around 65MB left, which is the amount I had before this happened.
Any idea what happened, and if I can get it back to normal? I know how to start from scratch using OpenRecovery, I just wanted to see if you guys could think of a way to salvage things before I went to all that trouble.
Thanks in advance!
Do you have a 2nd partition on your sdcard for apps2ext or link2sd?
I think what 3rdstring is suggesting is correct--your ext partition became dirty when you pulled the battery in ways that the automatic fsck on the phone can't fix. In this case, the phone won't mount it at boot to avoid causing further data corruption. You probably need to take your sd card out and use a linux desktop/laptop to run fsck.
I think Androidiani OR has a menu option to manually run fsck on the ext partition, so you could also try that.
If you don't care about risking losing the files, you can try to nandroid backup/restore of the SD Data partition. OpenRecovery isn't as picky about mounting sd-ext. A nandroid backup&restore of SD Data will create a tar (possibly containing corrupted files), reformat /sd-ext as a fresh ext2, and then extract the tar (with possibly corrupted files).
I do have an ext partition, but I didn't think I was using it- I didn't create any directories on it to start using apps2ext or move the dalvik cache there or anything- I just had it in case I wanted to do these things in the future.
It makes sense that it's probably related to this, though. I'll give fsck a try and let you know what happens.
Thanks!

If you ever booted Dexter's ROM without bugfix v2 or later, it would have created /sd-ext/app for you. This is automatic in Dexter's ROM.
Ok heres the story (its not too long don't worry)-
But I URGENTLY need help to fix it please please.
I have an LG GT 540.
I got it 2months ago, and it came as factory standard, and on LG's android 1.6 operating system (so unusable basically).
Over the 2months I managed to upgrade it to a Cyanogen 4.2.1 custom rom, managed to learn how to partition my SD card into fat32 & ext2 and then installed Mounts2sd and used it to freeup space on phone.
(The phone comes with only 138mb storage, so is unusable without mounts2sd quite simply).
The phone was constantly freezingup everytime I tried to load any app ever,
but after clicking the 'Fix Permissions' tab in the recovery menu, it was all working fine and everything was working fine.
HOWEVER as 1 thing wasn't working on an app I love, and re-installing the app didn't fix the issue, I decided to wipe the whole phone, reinstall the ROM and try re-installing the app then.
But when trying to clear and wipe everything from the phone, in addition to clicking data wipe/cache wipe/dalvik cache wipe, I also clicked on the buttons saying ''Format system / Format SDcard / Format sd-ext''.
When I tried to reboot phone it was bricked, as had no boot screen logo, just was plain dark screen.
I fixed this by removing sd card from phone, putting it into laptop, placing the Cyanogen 4.2.1 rom file directly onto the sdcard, placing sd back into phone, rebooting into recovery menu, and then re-installing the ROM from the sd card.
However I now have a massive issue in that whilst the phone will now work without Mounts2sd installed (well it works but I cant install any apps as no space to do that),
As soon as I install Mounts2sd on the phone and try to use it, whilst it does freeup the memory its meant to, it totally mucksup the entire phone by making every app freeze, making phone not turn off straight away when clicked to... ect
I have removed sdcard, re-partitioned it on my laptop into Fat32 & Ext2, re-installed the ROM multiple times, and then re-installed mounts2sd on the fresh rom and tried to use it,
But everytime I try it just screwsup the phone and makes all the apps and everything on the phone freeze!!
Ive now wiped all data/cache/dalvik,
re-flashed that cyanogen rom onto the phone again (mustve done that 50x now in last 2months),
and am about to try formatting the sd card again on my laptop, then re-partitioning it to Fat32 & Ext2.
But before I re-install Mounts2sd and get the exact same issue all over again,
please please can someone tell me how I can fix this or what im doing wrong??
And so how exactly I can install Mounts2sd back onto my phone again, but without it messingup the whole phone and making everything on it freeze?
Thankyou soooo much inadvance
