Can somebody please point me to the correct forum to post this question?
Years ago I had a Nokia phone. I purchased a program that kept track of which cell tower I was currently logged into. You could then assign different profiles to different areas, i.e. when I went downtown, my phone went into vibrate mode, when I returned home it went into normal mode, etc.
I can't believe there isn't a program like this for WM 6. I just don't know where to ask.

Has anyone heard or know of software that'll switch my WiFi on or off depeding upon where i am currently located using GPS? e.g. home or work? or wherever i've previously manually turned WiFi on and got a connection?

And I mean it.
Depending on cell towers and/or scheduled tasks it will change profiles, task and whatever you can think your device should do for you...
Exampel: My phones runs a close apps at 0100. At 0600 it reboots, turn on sound and let the alarm go. At 0730 the phone turns on and the screen becomes brighter. At 0800 a schedule starts, so IF CMP recons certain cell towers it turns on my Car profile. That one changes when I arrive at work to a work profile. Different sounds and lots more. IF my calender say I am in a meeting the screen will turn off and and sms will be sent to any that call me...
I have schedules for everyting. Nights - evening, weekend and wifi, tugging kids to bed and more....
So in short. CMP let you control whatever your device should do according to your position, the time of the day or your calender.

It has MANY details so it might take you some time to get deep with it, but from then it WILL become THE app of your device..trust me.
Thanks Martin, That looks like it does what i want, using cell phone masts is a much better idea than using GPS i guess.
However i'm put off slightly by the ugly skins and many details that will take me some time to get configured, i just want a simple background service that remembers what cell phone masts were responding when i get a successful authenticated wifi connection, and to use that information to turn wifi on the next time i'm in that area. The rest of my phone's profile such as back-light and ringtones etc i'm totally happy with managing myself as i'm not yet ready for my phone to be in control of my life! - i guess what i'm saying is the service shouldn't have any need for a configuration screen, and if it does, then it should be formatted and laid out in a standard way that doesn't look so scary or require me to identify my screen size before i download it!..
perhaps someone out there with more time on there hands than me could write this service and sell it on marketplace?!

I couldn't resist the challenge.. i have written this as a tiny background service...
Wherever you turn your wifi on and get a connection, your phone will remember this and turn it on next time your there, also if you wander outside that 'connected' location and loose your wifi connection your wifi will be turned off until either you wander into a previously 'connected' location or turn it on manually... - turning it on manually and connecting to a wifi network will add that location etc etc... so no profiles, no config, no skins, no setup, no frills.. just plain handy.
if like me anyone is sick of wifi draining the battery when accidentally left on, or up sizing your phone bill when its accidentally left off, then get in touch and i'll slip you a copy to beta-test for me!

I also know some compaines does this for chargeable service.
I am VERY interested in getting this for free! (I bet you are also).

The only information you can get out of your own phone, is the ID of the basestation it is attached to. This is held in a register in the phone internals that can be read via the RIL interface.
It is also stored in the SIM. If the phone is totally powered off it will attempt to connect to the last known good base station on power on. (Quicker than sniffing around all available frequences for an suitable station.)
While a change of basestation could be detected by software running on a phone, only the Telco's database has the location of all active phones, so they can inform the basestation to contact your phone if there is an incoming call or data.
This data is theirs and theirs alone. It is valuable and confidential, hence the charge for any use of it.
In short all you can find out from your phone is where it is. But you know that anyway.
Erm... I just wrote this and then I realized that you want to track the device via GSM and not GPS. This will only work with GPS (can be activated in the background), sorry.
Just look for an application that allows you to track your device if its stolen. Some of the programs still work after changing simcard (which is not really interesting if it did not get stolen in the first place...). If everything is set up, you can easily receive a sms with the current location (you need to activate the programm by sending a sms).
If you need to know the exact position of the device like every second, you can use a jogging-trainer which logs the speed etc. But this will only store the positions on the device (you can upload them to your computer, but this can probably not be done via any wireless connection.
My english is not the best, I am sorry. But I am sure you're gonna understand everything ;D And no, I don't know any programs name because I don't use them.

Stephj, are You talking about GSM or CDMA? Because for GSM I know for sure that the Telco knows a bit more - at least it is possible to triangulate the user's approximate position using three or more base stations (and probably user's signal strength for each base station too). So the DB should hold more info about the base stations available to user's current position, as for example "ready to go base stations" or something like that.
For tracking the phone, you can try GLympse or LookOut, Look out is better if you loos your phone, it synchronize with their website, and can see the location on the phone anywhere in the world, even can delete your data from your web account on look out.
I've got a screwy situation I'm desperately seeking a resolution to... simply put, we moved, and since then my Galaxy S2 (AT&T) pulls location from wifi when connected to it, everything within the phone keeps showing up that we're still back home, 30 miles away in a different state! But simply turn wifi off and then use 3G for location, and from the same spot in the new house, everything begins to work normally...
Now here's the twist - only on certain roms does this happen. Right now, I'm running MIUI 2.3.7, build MIUI-203090. Right now, on THIS rom, everything is working as it should... wifi is on, phone connected, showing all the correct information for the correct area... by changing roms, with all the same settings selected, the phone begins showing up back in the former location, and I begin to boil. I've reset the router back to factory defaults, and the same problem exists... I'm convinced it's a router issue.... I have an HTC Inspire that I had until 2 weeks ago when I made the upgrade... I broke it out and used it to test... and I can confirm that, on certain roms, even with a totally different phone, the SAME problem results because its connecting wirelessly to the same router....
Any ideas??
I assume that you are using the same router as previously?.. A router does not necessarily re-ping its location on a regular basis and so you may very well need to update your location in the skyhook database..

Never heard of this before - will try it...
If you have Google location checked it may be using the known location when it was first detected.
Change your router wifi name. Then it may not know anything except through GPS.

I tried the skyhook option, but it's not real clear - either it could take affect or could take up to 7 days - ?!??
The router's wifi name has been changed - and even went as far as to restore it back to factory defaults... STILL the same result... I'm absolutely confused.
this issue is not uncommon.. eg. my mobile hotspot shows me at home no matter where i am in the USA... a router is part of infrastructure and so is a fixed location... if not then the skyhook database would not even be required.
For any changes to take affect you will need to power cycle the router... and yes, a free service may take time to resolve itself.

p.s. nowhere anywhere on the web is a router referred to by name.. it has a unique mac address..it is this address that is tied to your location so change all you want.. but until the db is updated you will live 30 miles away

I have a Belkin n450+ router... how would I accomplish this?
I had been powered off all during the move, well over 24 hours - I'm confused about how to go about "clearing the db" -
if you have reported the location change to the skyhook server, you will have to wait for them to update their database (db..sorry)..
You have tried a reset, the only other suggestion other than to wait is to restore the factory firmware to factory settings.. you may need to update firmware after this and will need to reset and configure your network, but its an idea..

Just did a search for this problem and found this thread. Is this still the best solution?
Google uses many methods for its location, WiFi, GPS and Cell towers.
Remember that Google Street View car that travels around. It also tracks location and if it sees a WiFi signal it records the broadcasted name and location. If you use a Google service, phone or PC Google tracks the WiFi access point name. If it has a record of that name if knows your location. Otherwise it only knows your IP address is within a certain area of a city.
So, Google knows your WiFi routers name is at a particular address/location, then you move. Google doesn't know you moved so it continues thinking you're at your old address.
Changing the Routers WiFi name and a new IP address forces Google to relocate you by using GPS and other WiFi Hotspots it sees near you on your phone. It will then associate your new WiFi router name with your new location.
Basically but more complex than that.

I am after a bit of help if possible.
A friends has recently been having issues with messages appearing on his phone relating to what he's been doing. I will describe the symptoms below and wonder if anyone might be able to recognise them and shed some light on what's happening.
The messages are appearing not as traditional messages but as alarm clocks. When these alarms go off the name of the alarm is the message. For example "how's your brother" when his brother is at the address.
They appear to be able to see what my friend is doing. They were messing around in the kitchen and an alarm entitled "don't mess around in the kitchen" went off.
They have also been related to shops they've visited so I suspect they have access to the location history of the phone.
All of the devices it has happened on have at one stage or another been connected to their wifi network but, once disconnected from the wifi the messages are continuing even when connected to the mobile network.
I have looked on the phones, which are a mixture of Android and iOS devices and can't find any obvious malicious software on any.
The only common denominator is that they have at some stage been connected to their wifi.
Does anyone recognise this behaviour and is able to offer any guidance?
If so is the person responsible likely to be within range of their wifi or is it possible remotely?
Any help appreciated as it's starting to really creep them out!!

I can give you two ideas come to mind
This is someone who has installed spyware on the target device likely without owner knowing
There are paid developers who make programs that can access a phone in incognito mode viewing all activities from there pc or phone actually trigger the target device to take photos open the mic and listen to anything going on and more much more like viewing passwords typed sites visited
There's one that costs like 399$ for a year subscription its very very advanced crap! And people mainly use these to catch cheaters or watch there loved one be a pervert during there alone time lol....
I would factory reset phone and or search in apps downloaded and look for any unusual icons that don't represent normal Android O.S

Hi all,
Starting to get frustrated with my 3a and looking for avenues to address difficulty in maintaining a data connection when on the move. In all other ways this phone has been great.
When I am on the move - on the train, or in a car - my phone seems to lose data connectivity after a period of minutes. It seems to be an issue with maintaining a data connection when switching from tower to tower (at a guess). The phone does maintain mobile reception and I can be on a call without dropouts, but if for example watching a video, the video will stop, and eventually I will get the little cross in the reception icon to indicate no data connection.
No issues when not moving about, but am currently doing a lot of work on the fly, so hotspotting or conference calls are near impossible. This didn't always seem to be a problem, but due to Covid (and not moving around for a while), not sure exactly when it started. Have done some googling and tried a new sim card + changing private DNS settings with no luck. On the latest available update.
Is this a known issue with this phone? Any way I can diagnose or fix? Or am I looking at a new phone at this point?
Have rooted and switched ROMs on many previous phones, so quite happy to go down that path if need be.

I understand you say this only happens when you are moving but I would recommend checking with whatever carrier anyway maybe look on your carrier help site and write your same post here there and see if anyone else experiences the same. I would also save everything to USB or PC and flash factory image via fastboot and let it wipe not removing the fastboot -w in the./flash-all.sh. You could use an app like LTE discovery and set it to where you know exactly what it's doing and when it does it because you can set a small beep sound or wherever. What carrier do you use? Maybe update roaming , prl and profile, if you use a CDMA carrier. Also what type of case are you using? Just a few things that I thought of after reading your post here. You've probably already done all this but if not that's definitely what I would do. And last but certainly not least, are you using a custom rom or stock? Maybe check your/apns-conf.xml/ aka your apns and make sure they're correct and all for your carrier. I don't think you have to worry about apns unless you are using a custom rom in which case I would definitely check it out because sometimes they can be not right. I use Metro by T-Mobile and I'm located in the USA.
If you are on a custom rom you could try the old apn fix and just see if it's apn related... Wouldn't hurt anything.. Just save your current /apns-conf.xml/ and delete the apns-conf.xml file in your /system/etc/ and in /system/product/etc/ and replace the one in /system/product/etc/ with the one i link here and set permissions on it to 0644, then go to settings on your phone /networks and internet/ mobile networks/ scroll to bottom there and select access point names. Should be a lil three dot thing in top right and when you hit that select "reset to default" or "reset to default apn" and wait another 60 seconds or so then reboot. That will replace your apn configuration file. My file is recently copied from my last custom rom where everything worked fine and I had no issues. If this somehow is related to an apn outa wack then this will fix it. I learned this back years ago on another device forum from spaceminer here on xda. I've used this many times since and it's always worked. Again you don't need to do this on stock , only if you are using a custom rom. I believe stock is good.
