So while reading TheDudeOfLife's thread about his 1.5 cupcake builds, I've noticed alot of confusion about re-naming downloaded zip files for the purpose of flashing. I've seen it elsewhere as well. So I did a little tutorial thingy for those that might still be confused about the file extension stuff. This is pretty basic and maybe dumbed down quite a bit for some of us, but I'm pretty sure it'll clear up some of the confusion. I run Vista 64b Ultimate, so I'd guess the process is the same for all Vista versions. Can't confirm for XP or anything else. If anyone see's anything that needs clarifying, feel free.
This is my folder of downloaded phone stuff. The first picture shows what zip files look like with file extensions hidden-

This picture shows what zip files look like with file extensions showing-
Now, if your downloaded file looks like those in the first picture, and you plan to flash it with Alt-S, right click the file, hit rename and type update. That's it, nothing more, nothing less.
If your downloaded file looks like those in the second picture, right click the file, hit rename then type update.zip. Make sure the .zip is at the end.
Now in the case of D00ders builds, you have to right click, hit rename and remove just the .signed part. When the window pops up saying "changing a files extension may make it unstable", ignore it, hit ok. The file icon will change to a zip file icon according to however your folder view options are set.
Lastly, you can change file extensions hidden/showing at- control panel>folder options>view tab>hide extensions for known file types. By the default the box is checked in Vista.
Good tutorial!
In Windows XP, you can show the file extensions in Windows explorer by going to Tools/folder options/view/ and unchecking "hide extensions for known file types".
I have no idea why M$ decided that it's better not to know what file types you are looking at. That was just plain dumb!
Well some people are just plain dumb. There really isn't much need for normal users to change the extension of a file. MS likes to protect their dumb users.
The default setting "Hide extension of known file types" may well be the most stupid thing in modern computer history. There's no end to what confusion and problems it has caused in uncountable ways.
What if I send a malicious executable with the name "sexygirl.bmp.exe" - It'd show up as "sexygirl.bmp" - and you know what would happen when that reaches a teenage boy (or girl, if of that inclination)...

Exactly! I had wondered why it was working to send a .bmp.exe file to people and they would actually be dumb enough to run it. Now I know, they think it's just an image file, so it must be safe, and they click on it.
ok wat ive done
1.downloaded .8
2.right clicked opened with winrar
3.installed into sd card
4.renamed it update.zip
5.booted up into system recovery
6.alt + s
cant open /sdcard/update.zip
ive done this a million time before and it always worked, now i dont know what the hell is going on
You don't have to open anything with winrar. Just rename the file.....

Sorry for the long title thread, wanted to get all the basics in, hoping people won't skim by another 'help.running out of mem' type thread title.
To break it down a little more fully...
HTC Hurricane (badged up as Orange C550)
SIM and APP unlocked
Recently upgraded to Windows Mobile 6.1 (using ROM and instructions here)
The amount of Storage memory is very low 1.7-2Mb
In terms of additional software installed to the phone, and NOT the storage card, I only have QuickReset (6Kb)
6.38Mb of the available 17.95Mb for storage memory is taken up by one font in the /windows/ (not windows/fonts/) directory - youyuan.ttf . I believe this is a chinese (simp?trad?) font, which came installed with the custom ROM (selang09's wm 6.1 - see thread link above).
What I have tried (after googling and searching here and over at modaco)
deleting the font (Resco Explorer, Windows Explorer from PC)
renaming the font with a new extension youyuan.ttf > youyuan.txt
adding to the font's extension youyuan.ttf > youyuan.ttf.txt
moving the font to another folder, rebooting and deleting from there (wouldn't actually move the font in the first place, only copy)
edit the registry and remove all references to the font, reboot and try same steps above
The first four methods were all solutions I found online that others had recommended when font file removal had been an issue. The fifth I just thought I should try before posting here. The only issue is that some of the apps now have squares rather than chinese symbols - not a problem as I couldn't understand the correct symbols. I've gotten by with random menu selections so far
Am I missing an obvious trick? I'd really like to be able recover some more storage memory, some apps aren't running due to low disk space, when they use temp files etc.
If I've missed out anything information wise, please do let me know.
If I should have read something properly, and the fix is a 5 second job, feel free to take mick, but do please reply if you know how to delete/amend this file.
Many thanks.

Can anyone point me in the right direction for where to look for an answer? I've tried on this forum, general googling and also over at modaco.
Am I approaching this in the wrong manner?
With less than 2Mb free for storage, with nothing else I can find that I could remove, I'm often hitting problems with programs and games trying to place temporary files there whilst being run, and crashing out. Installing anything (obviously onto the storage card) requires finding the CAB file for it, and copying over manually, as otherwise, using Activesync to install in the normal manner, CABs seem to be temporarily stored in Storage, even before you get to the point of being asked where you want to actually install it.
If not delete, is there any way I can set a command to run before the GUI is too far loaded, that would make the file 0 bytes? As I don't use chinese characters, and have removed reg. references to it, I'd not be losing any functionality.
PS Waited until this thread slipped off the front page before bumping, hope this is considered polite enough around here...
No one ever had any idea how to sort this? I eventually discovered that a hard reset and not re-importing my old SMS etc freed up more memory, but I was surprised that no one had encountered this and found a solution?

so from what i understand is that every time you delete the font it comes back after a reboot?
Thanks for responding. No, I am simply unable to delete the font in the first place. I've tried all the steps I mentioned in the first post, I think I was either using Total Commander or Resco Explorer. I tried removing the reg entries referring to the ttf file in case they caused the file to be locked, but to no avail.
im new to the android world along with smartphones. (dont laugh)
i just updated to 2.2 Froyo. i cant figure out how to copy and paste anything. any help would be greatly appreciated.
long press then click copy text, highlight the words, slide, then long press again, select copy
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I897 using XDA App
well that works to an ex-stint
i just went to a lyrics site on my phone ad tried to copy some lyrics. it dont work. also tried going to facebook and just coping something someone posted. didnt work either. when i did a search in the browser i could do it that way to copy what was posted from the search???? that in itself is a task getting exactly what you want to copy.
even when i go into my email, i cant use it to copy anything in there.???
I haven't been too thrilled with the disjointed way that you have to do copy/paste.
- Within the browser, a long press brings up a magnification window that you use to place the start of the text you want to copy. When you release, you get 2 blue lines - the right one has a little circle under it. You can then move the little circle to highlight whatever you want to copy.
- Within a document/notepad app, clicking once in the text brings up a little pentagon under the cursor. You can use this to position the start of the copy. Clicking on the pentagon brings up a little menu - choose the stylized T to start selecting text - then drag the pentagon over the text you wan tto copy. When you release, the menu will pop up again and let you copy or cut. You can paste in the same fashion.
- Email is weirder. You have to go to Menu -> More -> Select text. Then you have to just kind of drag over the text you want to copy - doesn't seem to be much ability to have good control over this. When you release your finger, the text that has been highlighted gets copied.
Don't know if the Facebook app has a way to copy text.
the lyrics site i went to wont let you copy anything. i even tried on my computer. so i tried another and it works fine that way. but email(yahoo) i dont get that option to select text. on text size shows up???
What are you using for Yahoo? Native email, K-9, the Yahoo app, or on the browser?
I'm using K-9 and it works similar to Gmail app - have to go to Menu -> More -> Select Text.
native email id say. i havent downloaded anything other than what was setup on the phone.
heres a shot of my email when i touch the native email that came on the phone.

You're not the only one that is new to Smartphones/Android, so no worries there! I Have yet to upgrade to 2.2, because I don't think I want the junk that comes with the AT&T one, so I am looking to root and flash. I just used My file explorer app to cut n paste, but I never tried to cut n paste my email.
You'll get it figured out I am sure. I remember seeing an app in the market that would let you cut n paste an email attachment, even download it, as well as youtube vid. Just don't remember where I saw it. If I remember I will let you know.
Just out searching for how to, and which one, I'll get there.
So apparently the native email doesn't support copy/paste! Like I said, the disjointed way things sometimes are in android.
In the process of trying, I did realize that the native email has VERY nice pinch zoom capability - something K-9 or gmail do not have. Yet another example of this disjointed nature. Gotta take the bad with the good I guess!
If copy/paste is very important, I'd suggest trying K-9. MailDroid is another you can try, though it's ad supported & the paid version is kind of expensive.
EDIT: I realized later that K-9 DOES have nice pinch zoom! Don't know why it wasn't working for me - something was stuck or whatever, but it seems to work very nicely, so this might be a good alternative.
Android Market: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.wiirecords.chrometophone
This app is entirely based on Chrome to Phone! It has the same features (and bugs, lol) as the original with some additional cool features! The original app is awesome and it deserves all the credits, this app is only adding more features!
Browser to Phone lets you process incoming links virtually anyway you want it:
* download anything to your phone, instead of just opening the link
* convert file to other formats (i.e. send a bmp link, convert it to jpg and then download it)
* apply wallpapers/ringtones (i.e. send an image link and apply it as wallpaper)
* open specific apps (i.e. send an appbrain link and open android market automatically)
* more and more!
There are plentiful preloaded processes to use. Send suggestions about new processes/commands by e-mail and if feasible, they will be added on the next update!
You may create custom processes for your needs, define when they should run and what they will do. As this is not a simple task, you may search the web for custom processes done by other users and import them.
Download Processes: http://www.thiagorosa.com.br/android/browsertophone/files.php
You need to install a browser Extension on your computer to send links to your phone. Each browser has its own extension and they can be downloaded from:
Google Chrome: http://chrome.google.com/extensions
Mozilla Firefox: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/foxtophone
Opera: https://addons.opera.com/addons/extensions/details/opera-to-phone

How does the REPEAT command work exactly?
I'm trying to create my own process and I need to wait a few seconds between commands, is there a WAIT (or similar) command?
I cannot seem to find the Chrome extension, would you help?
https://chrome.google.com/webstore/search?category=ext&q=Browser+to+Phone
rhaige,
REPEAT has three parameters: regex, count, wait
The purpose of this command is to REPEAT the next command until the REGEX is returned. It will repeat COUNT times with a WAIT seconds interval between them.
tampiss,
It is the same extension from chrome to phone: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/oadboiipflhobonjjffjbfekfjcgkhco
Im trying it with the original extension, yet I always get error connection message. Normal Chrome to phone app works. Where can be a problem?
Where do you get this error message?
Is it on the android app? is it while connecting to your account?
or is it on the chrome extension?
thanks!
Yes, Im getting this message on Android app. I have just tried to uninstall Chrome to phone app and nothing changed. Even worse I have installed it back and now I can not connect on the official app too lol.
The same is happening to me now, it is probably an intermittent issue!
tampiss,
I was able to connect today! Please try again!
thanks!

Unfortunatelly not. The official app works again yet yours says the error while connecting. Im running Cognition ROM on Samsung GS2 if it helps.
tampiss,
I just tested again and both apps connect successfully!
There isn't any difference at all between the two apps during the connection. The only difference on Browser To Phone is that it processes links after they are received on the phone, nothing else!

Hi. It works great. I can not seem to find the pro version in Android market. How can I purchase it? Thank you.
Never mind. I found out by adding custom profile
Ive purchased it. Thank you.
Cool! Thanks!!! =D
Hi,
- are there anywhere any custom processes findable on the web?
- how could I make simple process to parse clipboards content sent from my web browser?
- where are the files (such jpg, gif etc) downloaded? I can not seem to find them on the phone
- please, how to process the apk download? I have created the process, yet I would like to start the instalation as soon as its downloaded? any hints for the needed intent?
thank you am really enjoying playing with this cool app
1) i didn't find any yet... but you can export yours and let other people use it
2) what would you like to do exactly?
3) they are stored on the sd card, inside the download folder
4) you should use this:
action=android.intent.action.VIEW
type=application/vnd.android.package-archive
data=the apk file (example: file:///mnt/sdcard/download/abcde.apk)
This APK process should be similar to "Image to Wallpaper"!
Ok to the point 4. If i do not know the exact name of downloading apk, what should i use for data in the intent? Any replace or variable trick?
Edit: i got it working yay
The input will always be concatenated on the DATA field. So you probably don't need to do anything!
The input will be the output of the previous command. If the previous command is a HTTP_DOWNLOAD, the output will be where the file was downloaded. After that you should replace /mnt by file:// (check the Image to Wallpaper process)
Did you notice the unit test feature? (menu)
You can easily test without having to actually send the link to the phone. You setup a unit test link (http://www........./yourapp.apk) and you can long press each command to test it!
Yep I have noticed all of that and tested.
I may have another question
When downloading img from Chrome I always get the img downloaded as xxxx.jpg(125x210) which stands for the img size. Well when I look at the Chrome tab I see it in the title. Unfortunatelly it is downloaded and named as above so that to open the downloaded img I have to rename it first.
Any hint for replace or solution would be great.
Thank you.
Edit: I have found a bug. When sending any text it has a wrong encoding. I use special chars such ěřč yet they come to phones clipboard as mess.
About the bug, there is an open issue on chrometophone: http://code.google.com/p/chrometophone/issues/detail?id=318
Hummm, about the extension....
I think I will have to update the app to remove the dimensions...
For now you could create a REPLACE, something like this (i didnt test it):
Regex: \.jpg.*
Replacement: .jpg
Anyway, i will fix it on the next version!
Oh well, if you're like me that loves to do the things I could do the hardcore geeky way without the help of apps and tools, unless obviously using an app will save you a lot of time, then you're on the right thread.
Anyway this will be my first howto guide on xda-dev, please be nice . This will be a noob to noob guide, taking every step into consideration. If you've got any issues getting it done, please don't hesitate to leave a comment, so let's have a ride to geekville.
As you'd know, changing app icons is something every lover of awesome interface and design can't do without, and we've got Android Launchers that will do this for you on the go, but really, they just change the icons of the apps in the drawer and not globally, for example, Whatsapp's icon changed with a launcher only changes in the app drawer and not the entire whatsapp ecosystem, even worse, the minute you revert back to your stock launcher, it changes to the original icon.
Here's an illustration:

As you can see in the image above, its the same es file explorer app but different icons, that's going to be our goal in this guide, changing the icons globally, if you changed the icon with a launcher, you'll only get your new icon replaced in the app drawer. So let's change our first icon.
Requirements.
A PC.
Apk Icon Editor By kefir500
iConvert Icons for Windows
Java Runtime Environment for signing the resulting apk by Apk Icon Editor. You can get it here.
An icon you'd like to replace for the old one.
Your time.
iConverticons.com actually does have an icon converter for the mac platform but since Apk Icon Editor is written in C++ for the Windows platform , what's the point? . Also the iConverticons utility does have a free version, don't know why they had to hide it on the site, you can just grab the free one from softpedia anyway, only costs you 10 seconds on every startup of the app.
Once you're done downloading the files from the links above, run their respective setups and grab any .apk file you'd like to try out in your android's
Code:
/data/app/
directory, (you're pro'lly going to need root access to mess with this directory, but you can always grab any .apk elsewhere).
1. Copy the .apk file to anywhere on your pc.
2. Now, get the icon you'd like to replace ready, it could be in the same path as your .apk file, doesn't matter, but preferrably go for a 512px icon size, you'll be glad you did. I'll be replacing the stock whatsapp icon with a flatter alternative by DtafAlonso on DeviantArt.
3. Start up the iConverticons app, then wait for its 10 seconds delay thing, before we create the icons, we need to modify the preferences for the conversion output, make yours match the images below.
4. Next, drag and drop the icon you want replaced in the iConverticons app, this will be followed with a dialog of where you want the resulting icons replaced, choose the folder you created earlier as the output folder and in about a second you should see a "Done" message.
5. Now go to that folder where the outputs from the conversion was saved, you should now see a set of icons in different folders namely xxhdpi, xhdpi, hdpi, ldpi and mdpi.
6. Start up apk-icon-editor.exe, then drag and drop your .apk file into the app's workspace, you'll get a progress bar showing that the package is being extracted and the contents of the AndroidManifest.xml file.
7. You will now see the original whatsapp icons in this window, Select the right icon size/dpi on the right, and then Right Click > Replace Icon ..then select the right icon size from the right conversion folder. The icon is replaced immediately, do these for the other sizes of the icons, you can choose to make the icons stay at just one size even on small devices, (just make sure you choose not to resize it if the editor asks if you want the icon resized).
8. Once you're done, Click "Pack Apk" and choose the destination folder you'd want your new apk file saved. You can choose to overwrite the previous one or have a copy of it named anything you like[dot]apk.
9. Then copy the new .apk file to your phone's sdcard and uninstall the app if it was present on your phone already, (installing the same app on your phone will cause the installation to fail), then install it.
Now you have a unique icon for that app.
NOTE: If you're curious as to why the original .apk file and the new one have different sizes, this is caused by the size of the icons you used, so for example, you might have an original size of 15.6MB and a new size of 15.45MB. one more thing, I have noticed apps like BBM misbehave when you touch their app icons something about them having conflicts with how the package was signed, so you can try this out with other apps apart from BBM and please tell me what apps break for you when you try it.
Does this work for the latest version of whatsapp? Version 2.16.259
Does this work for the latest version of whatsapp Version 2.16.259?
I tried to use a couple apk editor apps which have not worked. When you replace the original apk Whatsapp does not let you log in it seems like it checks with their server whether the apk is legitimate or not.
I have been racking my brain and can't for the life of me come up with a solution to my problem. I have the unlocked OP8 completely stock. All I want to do is copy my images from the phone to my Widows 10 PC. Something I have done with other phones in the past, shouldn't be a big deal, right? First I tried to simply plug my phone in, enable usb file transfer, and copy the files, and it seems to go like it's copying correctly until it is unable to copy files in "MyCollections" from when I tried to do some sorting of pictures that were from specific holidays or events. It will copy the DCIM folder fine.
My initial thought was that perhaps there was some kind of permissions complication since the collections were made with the oneplus gallery. So I used the OnePlus Switch app. I figured that since the app is made to make backups, it should be able to make a backup and then I simply copy that to my computer. Apparently that too is wrong and it fails to copy once it gets into the "MyCollections" folder.

Please disregard the "New Folder" naming when I was initially copying the files over folder by folder. That folder was the date and I was trying to see if the files would copy before typing it all out. For the purpose of drag n drop it would be irrelevant.
In a last ditch Google search of ideas to try, I tried to use ADB in an administrator command prompt to copy the files with the command "adb pull /sdcard/opbackup" on my PC. Only to have that too fail
"

I browsed to the video it was complaining about, opened it in VLC media player on my pc without a problem. I'm having this phone replaced, and for most of these pictures/videos I have no other places they are stored.
I really thought just copying the backup to my pc would solve my problem, but seems I can't actually determine what the real problem -is-. If anyone has any suggestions I'd really appreciate it. I have less than 24 hours before I have to either get the pictures copied, or lose them.
Hey there,
Please follow this:
1. setting
2. about phone -- tap build several times until "you are now a developer" comes up.
3. tap back arrow and go into systems.
4. tap developer options and scroll down an enable usb debugging and tap OK.
5. plug your phone and usb cable into your PC.
6. Pull down notiffication menu and tap on android system -- tap again and select file transfer.
7. Provided that all of your usb drivers are installed in your system, dialog box will come up and select your op8 -- open files.
I hope this helps provided that I understood your situation.

Unfortunately the fact that I issued ADB commands to the phone would mean I had usb debugging enabled and it had the drivers installed correctly. The problem is not starting the copying of the pictures/videos, the problem is that it fails both using copy and paste like you described and even trying to use ADB to pull the whole backup folder from the phone that way. There seems to be some kind of complication that I used the gallery to create the groups of pictures "My Collections". It will copy the unsorted pictures and videos from the DCIM folder just fine. But there's close to 800 pictures I have sorted in the My Collections that for whatever reason, it won't let me copy no matter how I try.

But there's close to 800 pictures I have sorted in the My Collections that for whatever reason, it won't let me copy no matter how I try.

Aw hell.....
I don't suppose you could upload your collection to google drive or some cloud service first and do what you need to before you lose your data? Thoughts?

Since I am about out of time I opted to copy what I can, and subscribe to a year of Google Plus to get plenty of cloud storage to back everything up. So most of my pics are copied. And what it wouldn't let me copy from the "My Collections" will be mixed in with all the other pics in the cloud. Figured the $20 /year wasn't a bad price to pay. Still would have preferred to keep them backed up locally - but I'll make do with what I can.
Hey, if you still having this issue I managed to fix it because same thing happened to me.
The issue is that some folders have space at the end of their names for some reason, if you look at your error - Balloon Fest 2019 . There is a space after 2019 - "Balloon Fest 2019 ". Just remove the space in the folder name and it should fix it. Do the same thing for any further errors.
