I've been thinking recently of making my own custom start menu for Windows Mobile 6.5, kind of like the way TF3D Rhodium overrides the start menu for its own programs list. Maybe to give it more of the iPhone's functionality in the way you can organize your programs, but in the start menu.
I was wondering if there's an established way to do this programmatically using API calls, or if I'm in for an extremely long adventure in hacking. If there's a known way to do it, could someone please point me in the right direction for how to get it done?
Thanks!

Sorry if this is not a ROM question but this forum is my last hope:
Ever so often it happens that an application in the background is silently terminated, because Windows Mobile needs the memory for new tasks. AFAIK this is part of the internal memory management that is supposed to keep us users from needing to terminate an application manually.
This is making me crazy!!!
Example: Sometimes I am writing a long reply to a topic in a forum, e.g. in Opera Mobile. I have some other websites open and mediaplayer running. Everything is fine. Then an SMS comes in and I open it to read. When I am trying to get back to Opera to finish the reply to the forum...it is gone! Terminated by the OS! All the typing for nothing.
Same happens with e.g. an IRC instant messenger in the background...all the conversation: gone!
So if anyone PLEASE knows a way to start applications so that WM is not able to terminate them automatically, or if there is a way to tell WM to ask before closing them (like it was with Windows CE 2.0) then please tell me!
I know one can start apps as services on boot by integrating them in registry key HKLM\Init, but then they are open from the beginning even if I do not need them at that time.
Any help much appreciated!
Has any solution been found?
Has any solution been found? I've the same problem on my Omnia.
same problem on my touch pro...
I suspect I'm having this issue with Touch Diamond 2. Would appreciate any suggestions...?
I'm struggling to keep Modaco NoData running which, as you'll understand, is a bit of a problem.
I was wondering ( and I have done a search first ) if there was a way to initiate the windows lock screen where you have to input a pin. I wanted to be able to add a shortcut to the menu to lock the phone so that the pin has to be entered rather than waiting for it to time out. I am guessing its going to be one of those simple requests that is actually quite hard to do.
Specifically I am using an HTC TyTn II with WM6.1
Many thanks
Check this thread
I guess the easiet way would be to write a few lines of code similar to what this user has done. Ofcourse...writing code is a different ball game altogether. If your device was running on WM6....I think this would be exactly what you'd be looking for.
Hope this helps.
Wow, actually this seems to work under WM6.1
Thank you so much for pointing this out to me...
Actually, I am looking for something like that too. I need a simple StartMenu shortcut for my Omnia II (i8000) to just lock my screen on demand (with WinMo default lockscreen).
Anybody knows, what the system file is, that executes device lock?
Ok, I've looked at plenty of software packages, and none of them seem to offer the feature I'm looking for. Basically, I want to be able to send a keyboard shortcut (Alt+Tab, Ctrl+Right Arrow, etc) to a PC from my Windows Mobile phone. I have the HTC Fuze, so, getting the key presses to the end PC via bluetooth or WiFi would work.
Does anyone know of a freeware software package, that isn't ugly as hell, or a way to script this?
I have experience writing VB.net applications, and I'm tempted to do this myself, but I don't really want to throw down the cash for Visual Studio Standard Edition license.
Is it possible to properly deactivate Windows Mobile 6.5 Start Menu? (without changing registry, without deleting files, etc)
It is the most gimmicky menu system I have ever used.
And the sorting/re-organizing method is the most idiotic and most slow sorting system Microsoft has ever created.
no idont think so...
But if you can perform do this on other WINMO OS tell us please... it could be a great HACK but idiotic thing i suppose... but its your apreciation... why would you like disable the start menu?
The windows mobile start menu is terrible...how is it an idiotic thing to not like it?
It takes forever to organize the folders and files in the start menu, and it takes a HUGE learning curve to understand how to do it.
I want the original start menu...you get what I mean?
I know i know
M$ has a bad play with this new rom... the only great here is the speed and the transparencies! lol
you are right everybody hates it... but asking this kind of thing is even worst... sorry dude, hope you can understand what im trying to say here. change to SYMBIAN! or PALM! you will se how f$&ked up are that systems.
I have used symbian, I have used scriptkiddies on it, and used alot of customizations and hacks and programs on it. And I have used palm and iphone too. But I love Windows Mobile....
Please I hope to God you know that I am a windows mobile fan boy....cause it seems like you think I hate it or something.
I love windows mobile but MY POINT IS THAT THE OLD START MENU WAS BETTER.
Hi,
I came from the TP2 WinMo world. I miss PhoneAlarm. It was an all-in-one place where all relevant information was shown in a skinnable interface, it could be a simple toolbar or take over the entire screen.
Does anyone know any applications like that for Android.
The PhoneAlarm website is:
http://www.pocketmax.net/phonealarm.html
Thanks in advance.
I've used Phone Alarm a lot using my TP2. But more so only for the fact it has auto profiles so I didn't have to worry about putting my phone to silent when work started and when it ended.
I don't know a complete replacement that you can skin.
But if your just looking for the auto profiling (controlling - wifi, brightness, notifcations etc)
I use Timeriffic, free in the Market
