I've never programmed anything before, but have been studying/reading about programming in Visual Studio, and just went through the tutorials from the Android SDK... What i'm looking to do is share the GPS in the G1 to my Wing (or any other device, depending on how I can do it) to use GPS software I had previously purchased for the Wing. I had a bluetooth GPS puck, but the charger cable broke, and CompUSA has been out of business for quite some time now... So I figured why not try the G1? Since it doesn't have proper turn-by-turn directions, which I would also need available in the mountains of West Virginia, where T-Mobile and AT&T don't provide service, it'd be critical to have an offline solution. And that's why I'm trying to stick with my Wing as the turn-by-turn solution.
Anyone know of the APIs needed to provide access to the GPS data? And how about sharing them, I figured bluetooth is probably going to be my only route, but I didn't think bluetooth COM ports were available in the Android APIs just yet. Anything to help me out would be great. I've been digging through the SDK as much as I can and I'm finding nothing that's easy to understand lol.
Also any websites with tutorials on Android development would be great.

I've been wanting to do the same. To have the G1 grab the data and then transmit it to a laptop or PDA via bluetooth or usb.
Unfortunately, I lack the programming skills needed.
That makes two of us LOL. I'm very much a beginner programmer, I still haven't gone through enough to understand anything. I think I found something that could provide location information, so all I need is to figure out how to implement it into an "On/Off" button centered on a plain screen, and tie that into an export function (i think?) over a Bluetooth COM port that I must create. Somehow. If I figure out something, I will test it on my G1, then upload it somewhere for much wider testing. But this may just be something I need more experience to work with it. I do have Eclipse installed and ready to go if anyone can point me toward the right documentation, because the SDK and developer.android.com doesn't provide much, just an introduction and "jump into it" style of learning. Might be best for experienced programmers, but I'm completely lost. Anyone?
This is not practical. Possible yes, practical no. I doubt that its even possible to put the Dream BT into slave mode, but if it IS possible, you would *definitely* need root access. You're better off dealing with the charger for your BT-GPS. Forget about the store you bought it at, they probably couldn't have found you an appropriate charger anyways. The device manufacturer is a much better source for information and radio shack can sell you a charger that meets the required specs.
If you decide to go the BT route, you would need to output the NMEA data from the GPS....this is a standard format for position information that almost all navigation software accepts.
Fortunately it isn't a particularly complex data set....just lat / long / alt / time.
Forgive my ignorance on the way GPS is implemented on the G1, but wouldn't it just be easier to wait for a turn-by-turn app to be developed? Or to start on that itself? Or is there one available already?
Try out andnav2, now that it supports downloadable map tiles and there is a facility to generate YOUR OWN maptiles from OSM data, there are some significant advantages there, even compared to other systems, like tomtom. Definitely worth taking a look at -- it might even work out better for you (certainly will in terms of cost -- free).

Well in regards to the charger, I looked for information on buying a new one, turns out that's not possible. It's a Pharos iGPS-BT, not the easiest product to find ANY support for. And indeed, I do have root access, as I'm tethering with my G1 in order to get online... About the output data, yes, I was aware of the usage of NMEA data, actually mentioned it in a similar post I made to the android-beginners group on Google Groups, and I'm pretty sure that with how it's handled by the (for instance) GPS Tracker app, it's pretty much forwarded through whatever means are necessary. In that app's case, to the internet database at InstaMapper.com, in my case I'd want it through bluetooth. Now as for a G1 turn-by-turn solution, there's a commercial one, TeleNav, already available, BUT that requires a monthly subscription fee, something i've NEVER been okay with for any product, because if you find yourself not using it extensively (I travel to unfamiliar territory once in a great while, and typically on short notice), you're paying for functionality not used. In addition, that means you download that data as you need it. Something that doesn't happen with Garmin, TomTom or iGO on the Windows Mobile platform.
And as for AndNav2, I check their site DAILY, desperately hoping for enough donations for them to get a server dedicated to the United States. They have California available, but that's pointless to me over on the east coast. lbcoder, this OSM data you're speaking of, can you elaborate at all? I ultimately didn't want to use the G1 as my nav solution because it doesn't fit in the mounting solution I have (my Wing fits perfectly in my steering wheel, wedged in and won't move!) but if that's the easier solution in these hard economic times, I'll go for it! In the meantime I'll go research their site to see if I can find any information on this data and how to get it, where to put it, etc.
I just found 1 click directions in the market. It's got voice turn by turn! It's not perfect, but it works.

So for now, I give up on AndNav... You know, ivanmmj, I think I'm using your Wing ROM... I know I downloaded "Just2Clean" to give new life to my Wing, and you cooked that, didn't you? I needed it for the new iGO 8 to run properly, since the stock ROM would barely run Garmin or TomTom. iGO's 3D terrain kinda has me spoiled, too, I can't live without that interface! So I must say, THANK YOU for giving my Wing new life... as a GPS. But other than that, the G1 rocks my world for every other purpose.

lol. Yes, that was me. If you want, I can cook you a ROM with the phone part gutted out, so that it servers as a PDA with wifi and all but doesn't waste resources or battery on the phone part. I've never done it, but doesn't seem like it would be something hard to do. I'll even base it on the newer JustStable once I finish it. (It's the newest ROM I'm cooking (not including the WM6.5 ROM I'm working on for kicks.)

The Wing hasn't been used as a phone, indeed, though the threaded SMS was pretty nifty. Google beat them out though. I use the Wing to manage my Netflix que, and when I'm using Garmin, I download traffic updates. All that is done via Wifi to the G1's wifi-tether network. So indeed, I have no use for the phone at all. You, my friend, are very kind to offer up a build specialized toward someone like myself. When/if iGO ever shows up on Android, I can put the Wing to rest. Until then, you've breathed new life into the poor, old, crippled thing.

Well there's currently a 'usb hosting' application in developing stage for the HD2.
USB hosting allows you to connect your mouse, keyboard, usb drive to your phone and your phone will be able to recognize the input or read the connected device.
If that application is released, youi'll probably be able to run that hardware on it.
@ElCondor, Thank you with the usb link, I've already seen that, which makes me ask you to check the Morph Keyboard video @Engadget listed today. The trophy is nice but not as equivelent as the HD2 (personal oppinion). Also are you familiar with the WebRocket from TMO? it speeds evreything up, you might not need it since you have different carriers where you live.

After 6+ years with a Windows Smart Phone (1st MPX220) I see the platform is dead and I have to go elsewhere. I am thinking of going to the Captivate. I like the new BB also but I am not sure if I want a crack berry. I think the Captivate will be more fun to have in the long run.
The cheapest I can find the phone with a 2 extention and keeping my old plan is Best Buy for $149 plus a $30 one time credit to my account.
I am wondering how to get I get all my texts and info from my old phone to my new phone. I have used PPCPIMbackup when doing firmware updates to my phone to back up all my info. Does this work with Captivate also? I am not sure because of the different OS.
I have never had a phone with out a keypad. This will be new for me. I wish I could have a phone with one. I see having a nice slim phone will also be nice. I think the keyless pads is how all phones exept for BB will be very soon.
Does anyone have any good tips or information before I go over to this phone? I know going from a Windows phone to this is going to be very different.

I'm using the xda app so can't see your sig, what phone are you coming from? I've used winmo for about 2 yrs and love this phone. Not sure how to copy things over, seen alot of posts with problems. Best I've seen is manually enter em in google and sync that way. I just used my sim card. Didn't have a bunch of special contact info to copy.

The Captivate is a wonderful phone, if you don't mind waiting for a GPS fix.
My own experience: I was concerned about the lack of a physical keyboard, but found that swype makes things easy. However, I am more frustrated that I expected at the lack of really good business applications in android (I am waiting for Pocket Informant android, specifically). Also, if you use Outlook, you may have some frustration with syncing.
There is certainly no android phone to compare on ATT.

After ATT sent me my 4th or 5th phone I was doing better because it did not have the ID1 update. I kept on using firmware updates from this site to make the phone better. After the 6.5 update came out and the phone still was not right I gave up. GPS is still a issue but not like ID1. My texts and e-mail keep on crashing on it. I have not been able to update my hotmail via Live for over a week. Every time I close out of my texts it locks ups for about 20sec to a minute or two. I have finaly given up. Now my battery is only lasting about 2 days on standby. After about 1 hour long call I go though about 40% battery. I am just happy I can start doing a upgrade now.
I just hope the GPS fix comes soon for this new phone.

Yes, GPS is not fully functional at this point, but it appears that Samsung is working on correcting the problem. 2.2 is in the works, but no word yet on when it will be released for the Captivate... best estimates seem to shoot for 1-2 months from now.
The gps works well for me with the update. It just takes longer than what I was used to wth the iphone. I get a solid lock in 30 seconds.

Excuse me, *for some*, GPS is not fully functional.
For the most part the captivate is great. Just needs a little bit of tweaking here and there. Gps is pretty much b0rked at the moment. Til Samsung gives us an actual fix. Or we find one. Gps can lock somtimes but it will jump around a lot or lose the fix. Navigation wont work for the most part. Aside from that the phone captivate is a great choice.
OK so the GPS sounds about as good as my epix right now. I can not even get a GPS signal in the car unless I have it on the dash with nothing blocking it. If all it takes is 30 seconds to lock on I will be set. That is better then the Epix. What is up with Samsung and the GPS.

Nobody knows for sure. Some speculate it is hardware and won't be fixed. Most of us feel it is software. It supposedly works for some people, but those that can't get it to work are dubious that the ones that work are just not hitting the right circumstances for it to fail. It actually seems to be accurate a high percentage of the time, but when it is off, it is waaaaayyyyy off. Sometimes only for a few seconds. Very inconsistent.
Samsung has indicated it will be fixed in September. Not much time left for them on that commitment.
If they don't make it by then, there will be lots of whining and griping. I'll be doing that in my mind, but plan to refrain from doing so in the forum The GPS problem is probably the single largest issue that has caused a lot of threads, and several contentious posts.
It is a great phone. Hopefully the GPS issue will have true resolution very soon.
I switched from a moto Q. To a samsung jack, used a epix for a bit as well. Got this phone a few weeks ago and have not regretted it for a second. Android and win mobile 6.5 are not even close enough to compare.
Also swype beats out any virtual or physical keypad I have ever used.

I'd SERIOUSLY wait 2 months until the Windows Phone 7 devices are out. I was at MSFT this week and got to play with a dev model for a few minutes, it does seem pretty nice. It will all really depend on what apps are available.

My impression, personally, was that windows mobile seemed like it was as locked down as the iphone, but without all of the iphone's features and polish. In short, It seemed like the worst of both worlds. The only thing I that it has going for itself is the nice looking homescreens. That is just my initial impression though and I hope I'm wrong.
You can see my list of phones in my SIG and I know my thing when it comes to HTC and WinMo.... all those phones in that list, were me trying to find a device that ran...well.... the way my Captivate does. Even with fat thumbs I can still type on the software keyboard... I go back to my TP2 and I actually type slower. I just cant type without looking at the keyboard, one thing a software keyboard will never accomplish.
Ive been following WinMo for years, and I can tell you, this makes me never want to go back, even for WP7.

Ok I got the phone on the way home.
I am likeing it a lot all ready. I used Travel for the GPS app. That thing worked great. I hope maybe I got a good one. Before I did anything on the phone I did the software update. I am going to play with it for a little and see what else if great. I do love the voice activated things. That is great.

I came from a HTC Tilt, which had HORRIBLE GPS. I was able to get a great Froyo ROM in it and had a ton of time to play with it before I got the Captivate. The learning curve is very low for basic operation. It'll take a bit of research to get the rooting/sideloading etc down. Most everyone here is fantastic at helping out and I've gotten some excellent advice from people on how to mod my Captivate. Coming from a WinMo phone to this one, I HIGHLY doubt you'll be disappointed
I am a die hard WM user - never used any other OS. Was awaiting WP7 for months!
It is a dumb blonde! Pretty, but useless.
1. Keyboard is good, but no option to longpress for numbers
2. Phone dialler - no option to dial name of contact on phone dialler
3. Can't search calendar for specific appointments
4. Office hub is useless - can't organize in folder, ending up with loooong list of documents.
5. Word mobile is hopeless for formatting compared to WM6.5
6. Adobe PDF documents - can't be organized in folders. Can't even rename files
7. No video calling
8. The stupidest thing: Can't transfer files from PC to phone. What the ^$%^$ !
I have to go to Dropbox every time!

I felt a lot like you do at first, but that quickly wore off the more I used WP7. If you already bought it and feel the way you do, sell it and get something else. I used to see a lot of rants like this months ago but see almost no posts like yours recently. I think you should have posted this months ago, you might have found some allies, but not today.

Well said. I was going to say pretty much the same thing. I struggled going from WM to WP at first (I still miss swype dearly) but after a few days of WP7 I could never go back despite some shortcomings.

The things I thought I could not live without in WM6.5 have turned out to be silly. I don't know why I felt that way. Anyway, many apps I used on 6.5 are now available on WP7, and more coming daily. The news of the potential features in Mango take away many if not most of my concerns.
I think we need to remember that WP7 is very young still, iOS didn't have copy and paste also when it came out... Give it a year or so I'm sure WP7 will be up there.

My grouse is that WM 6.5 had so many features that have been stripped down to the point that WP7 is inconvenient. Why strip down Office to a bare minimum? Why remove the smart dialler in the phone? Why remove the long press for numbers in the keyboard? Why no USB functionality? Moreover, there are inconsistencies within WP7 itself. Why no voice GPS? E.g., why no search option in calendar? Why no zune support for synching data files? Why no wifi tethering?
I am not comparing WP7 to other OS. I am comparing it with Microsoft's own previous product. 6.5 to 7 is meant to be an upgrade, but it is actually a downgrade.
Why deliver a stripped down product when the previous product (6.5) had all these? And now, they have to catch up with "updates" with all the attendant bad publicity, and poor sales.
They had 3 years to get it right. They had at least 8 months in the beta testing when people clamored for copy-paste.

In some important ways it is a downgrade, in other ways it is an upgrade. All in all WP7 may be better due to newer/faster hardware, yet the FAIL of lackluster Bluetooth integration, no rSAP, no custom ring tones, no way to sync files easily, no wireless tethering, etc, etc and yes etc is really a let down. MS always seem to go three steps forward and two steps back, then perhaps release ONE of the two 'lost' steps like it is a huge improvement and technology advancement. If MS does not get their act together and release what many consider normal features, the Android market will leave MS in the dust.
MS can do much better, so what is keeping them from reaching some simple goals every other major phone OS has been doing for many years (including MS' 6.x)? THAT is the real question.
I think the worst thing is the wifi sleep issue that no one can seem to find a fix for. I bought one a week ago and its been sitting in the box while I use my desire. I just can't use it properly without having the option to leave wifi on

I agree 100%. This issue and another big Wi-Fi issue are the bane of my existence on WP7. Anyone have trouble connecting to different Wi-Fi networks? This is by far the biggest nuisance I deal with. What I mean by this is, for example: I am at work all day connected to the office Wi-Fi. I come home and my Quantum refuses to connect to my home network. It tries to connect for about 15 seconds or so, then eventually gives up. The only way to get it behaving properly is to reboot the phone. Turning Wi-Fi off then back on, disassociating with all remembered networks, etc. all do nothing. Don't know if this is unique to me because there is just something specific about the networks I am connecting to that creates "The Perfect Storm" and throws the Wi-Fi off, or if this is a widespread problem. Either way, I can't wait until it is resolved.

I don't get this issue at all mate, i pretty much do the same - connect to a network at work, then go home, it automatically connects fine for me at either location. I also connect to Wifi networks at my parents and GF's mum's and it connects flawlessly to either one without any hassle.
Though i must admit, the ability to keep wireless on even when the phone goes to sleep is a must! It will however stay on if you plug the phone into its charger, though not always convenient.

Don't know if this is unique to me because there is just something specific about the networks I am connecting to that creates "The Perfect Storm" and throws the Wi-Fi off, or if this is a widespread problem. Either way, I can't wait until it is resolved.

I don't get this issue either except on my nook and I think my wireless router @ that location is the issue (pretty sure of it). The WPA only a select few ip addresses on certain mac addresses for some reason so if the address is taken by another device it doesn't connect I thought my router was smart guess I was wrong but once I forget the network and then reapply the security settings it connects, I have no problem with my other router.
After purchasing an Acer Iconia a500 , I realized that it isnt just WP7 users who whine and complain about the latest upgrades , its tech wide ! I mean some of the gripes you have are laudible ,but in the long run 6.5 is done , so if you long for that experience it wont last , sure theres still some people using Windows 98 , XP , but at some point it becomes so outdated it becomes useless, you will find wm 6.5 fits this category , sometimes you have to go back to go forward and that is the case with WP7 !
Trust me the "copy paste" function is useless , I havent even used it yet (or missed not having it) , As I said I have a tablet with Honeycomb on it , its really irratating hearing all the babies crying about updates , the damn OS has been out for a month and these crybabies are whining "it doesnt do this ,it doesnt do that" , the thing is like most devices that are new it will not have certain things right off the bat , yes the device can be rooted a plus , but somethings cant be changed yet , just like the missing api's wp7 , that stuff will come , theres so many talented people in XDA , JUST RELAX AND ENJOY THE RIDE!,

this has nothing to do with XDA.....
this has to do with Microsoft developing a poor operating software for my 499.99$ phone. This is a rant about the missing features that are obvious to a smart phone and you are saying relaxing dont worry.. this is what i purchased the phone for and it is severely lacking in a lot of areas.

If you were missinformed of what WP7 was and could do at the time of your purchase, its your own fault... grab your 499.99$ and take it back, problem solved.

I find it pretty funny people moaning about the lack of features WP7 has and how great Android and IOS are.
I had Android from the very start when hardly anyone knew what it was and i had that brick of a phone (although i quite liked it lol) called the G1.
Android was released on 1.0 software however i thought it was a practical joke no lie the battery would last 5 hours if you was lucky and the phone would heat up like a microwave oven besides the various other bugs etc including freezing up completely. It took Google 5 updates until we got the first named update "Cupcake" 1.5 before android was even half usable and had copy & paste etc. And to be honest it should of started on 1.5 so my G1 only got 1 decent update to 1.6.
Its the same with all the other android phones i have had the SE X10 did go from 1.6 to 2.3 only because legions of p*ssed off people including myself moaned at sony like there was no tomorrow when they said it would only get 2.1 (i think).
Etc Etc the point it Android is way too fragmented and buying a Android phone is like entering a lottery with regards to updates and added features etc.
Same with Apple it took them at least a year to add even copy & paste not too mention all the other stuff that was missing like MMS & Adobe Flash (ah yeah still ain't got that one).
Microsoft have given us a much better OS than both Google or Apple right off the bat and the amount of added features Mango is bringing is pretty amazing adding more stuff than 1 or 2 major android updates and even getting so things in the first year of WP7 that iPhone hasn't got after 5 years.

There is a lot wrong with that question. First, the LX 2009 was not on android, it was on Danger's proprietary firmware. This means that it's not a rootable scenario, as there's no root to get. I believe what you're talking about it getting it Unlocked which would have to come from Danger/T-Mobile, but I'm not sure if they're still giving out unlock codes for that phone, as it's now old and no longer made.

after u by bass the screen by holding the button with the three bars and the L button holding at same time for like 2 sec after ur at the main screen hit the menu button thats the one with the three bars go to settings network options scroll down to network APN now click the change network apn and erase the tmobile one thats there leave it blank then hit the menu butten and click done with in a few seconds or instantly like it did for me it will activate and u make a new user name or use one u have if u do that is and my email started up and the download catalog worked and my sidekick 3 said i was registered text me at 9736104730 (im on att) or email me at [email protected] it took me like 6 days to get my phone to activate and i was getting mad and i did this by mistake and im glade it works now lol att pay as you go on sidekick 3 loving it.

Well that trick doesn't work. I wonder if we can flash the Sharp Jump (offered by Cincinnati Bell) firmware onto this device? Then someone would have an old copy of the Danger SDK lying around and it would become grey territory in terms of legality of the use of the SDK.
sorry to bump an old ars tread but my SK4G **** on me.... and back to the LX 2009 anyone know how to at least get internet running? apn settings are limited on this device and epc.tmobile.com is a no go
try unlocking the device. if tmobile wont give you the code, then find an unlocking service. ebay is probably cheaper than a regular service. either way, get the code and put a non tmobile sim in and unlock. then put your sim card back in, find the apn settings, delete whatever apn is there, and then put tmobiles current apn in. if that doesnt work, nothing will.
Danger-based Sidekicks ran everything through their proprietary Back-End Servers which were shut down back in May of 2011. After that time, NO Danger-Based Sidekicks have been able to access the internet. Sharp has since tweaked their remaining LX09 stock and re-marketed the devices (complete with an Opera Browser with Internet services and a non-Sidekick name) to other carriers (including Mobility Wireless and Cincinnati Bell). their tweaks were not made public to be applied to T-mobile branded devices.

If someone can extract the flash through a JTAG or other flash reader, then the Sidekick LX scene may explode; if the hackers can bypass legal measures.
Danger's agreement for developers was very restrictive.
To get any kind of modding started on the Hiptop, you would need some leaks directly from former Danger employees... Not only is that unlikely, the trail has gotten awfully cold. The Hiptop (and all its kin) has been pink and dead for a long time. Some ho killed it.
Agreed. Regardless, the LX is a lost cause now.

do u have a copy of Danger SDK..?? is there any way i can get it?? i have a SHARP PV300(almost same as sidekick lx2009) but cannot install any new apps into it.. i just want to install a few apps in it. there is GPS on the device.. but it is useless as it comes without an application,.. is there any way u can help me..??

The short answer is no.
There always were two different builds of Danger OS's. There was a developer build that was used by Danger employees and a production OS that required a developer's code to install 3rd party apps.
There's a good chance they still have two builds of the OS for your device. Sharp likely has a developer build they use in house--and you have a consumer version.
Because the catalog is dead and gone, I don't see any reason why they would have maintained the ability to "unlock" devices for devs. The whole dev code feature may have been deleted.
Even if there still is a way to unlock the device, I believe the developer codes were produced using a hash against the device IMEI. But, that doesn't help much because I don't know of anyone that ever cracked Danger's crypto method.
The Danger development website was capable of generating codes for approved devs, but it has been gone for years. So, you can't get the algorithm directly or produce more examples for evaluation...
And, you should be able to copy your device's location to the clipboard and use it in the browser. It's not completely worthless...

It's great to see the old-school Sidekicks get talked about. I still have my SK3 and SK2008. The SK3 was a personal favorite of mine. As far as hacking them is concerned, I'm sure there's a way to root them as the basis for the OS was a Java VM running on Linux if I remember correctly. Microsoft would have to fork over the code for the open source parts of it. The SK LX 2009 was a new start for the Danger OS and ran NetBSD as the base of the OS. The old SK's are CHEAP to pick up nowadays given their limited utility, but they would be the ultimate hacker's challenge as far as modding and breaking into the OS. One guy managed to do it and got hired by Danger waaaaaay back in the earliest days of the Hiptop/Sidekick. Unfortunately, it seems his work isn't available to download anymore. Does yours drop them too? I thought it was just mine. Though, the problem has largely subsided with the most recent ROMs like RAGE4.0 and GOv3.2Bulky (which I'm running now.). still, it hasn't totally been eliminated. This thing will show flashes of what made the old Sidekicks great, but the execution by Samsung and T-Mobile wasn't what it needed to be. Still, this device shows that Android is really Hiptop OS 2.0 (sort of). There's so much in Android that first was in Hiptop.
<sigh> I really wish MS hadn't bought Danger.

Microsoft wasted their money. But, Danger was doomed when the Hiptop 3 arrived. That design failed to innovate and move forward.
The Hiptop, Hiptop Color, and Hiptop 2 were all incremental improvements on the same core experience. At the time, it was ok because they met general expectations.
But, the Hiptop 3 needed to be something special--and it wasn't. That hurt.
The other problem was the closed platform. Danger had trouble getting development off the ground. The whole thing was a powered with a proprietary Java-based (aka slow) platform. They added MIDP support later, but that just encouraged quick and dirty ports--they needed native quality apps.
Danger's (Apple copied the idea) app approval process and catalog was a great idea to guarantee stable software and boost revenue. But, the closed platform also discouraged developers. Somewhere in the middle of the Hiptop 2's lifespan, Danger sued over Hiptones (a grey market app) and stopped giving most people dev codes. That chilled any enthusiasm that may have existed and effectively killed the device with most devs.
Microsoft still could have saved the platform. But, Danger shot themselves in the foot long before that by locking out devs and failing to innovate.
I agree it was a stupid purchase by Microsoft. $500 million was just ridiculous to spend. I really wonder what they thought it would get them. The owners of Danger made out like bandits presumably.
I've heard that things like more advanced Bluetooth profiles like A2DP were kept off the SK3 because of carrier requests. It was also very odd how long it took to add support for MMS to say nothing about the issue of locking down the ability to add your own ringtones. I know someone suggested to T-Mobile that they make dev keys available as a premium download in the Catalogue, but that went nowhere.
Speaking of 3rd party stuff, I wonder to this day what else could be put on an SD card to open up features besides just the themes. There had to have been more to that which could have been done to gain further access to the devies. I tried one time with a friend to hack into the SK3 with my linux desktop via USB, but that didn't go anywhere.
Well, T-Mobile owned half of Danger. Their "requests" and (shortsighted) hunger for a few dollars in ringtone revenue were very costly in the long term.
For years, there was a special T-Mobile flavor of the OS with missing features. That didn't end until the LX 09.
Many other features failed to appear bcause Danger wasn't taking the future seriously. For instance, the devs had software to store our emails on sdcard. The software was around forever and we all downloaded and used it, but it never made it into the OS... Somewhere around the release of the Hiptop 3, Danger stopped taking email seriously. Did they really think the LX 09 would attract a wide range of users with a dinky little mailbox?
We also had proof of concept for video decoding that ran all the back to the Hiptop 3. But, again, it went nowhere for years.
So many missed opportunities..
I made a few bucks back in the day by making themes and custom ringtones for the lx and lx09 I still have my 09 with like 100 custom ringtones and its unlocked but till I can find a way to override the danger server dependancy it will sit in its box in my closet gathering dust I loved that thing. I'm upset now that I sold my sk3 and sklx and only kept the 09 lol

I have never owned a cell phone before (yeah, I'm one of the last three who never has), and now am wanting to buy one. My preference is Android. I have some questions about this whole space:
* I don't want a contract. Is it generally true that I can buy any unlocked phone, and a prepaid SIM from Amazon or somewhere, and use them together?
* I'm old (early 60's) and have some generational cultural differences from many (but not all) of you that grew up with and accept social networking. Specifically, I have a zero tolerance policy towards my phone leaking ANY data, under any situation, and a zero tolerance policy for any outside control of the device. That is to say, I will not accept remote updates of software, nor any software which "phones home". I will only accept a phone that is 100% under my control. This seems to create complications, even under Android. If I run a custom firmware such as CM7, is this a goal that I can reasonably achieve? Perhaps with a local firewall on the device?
* I want to use the GPS for wilderness hiking, specifically, to retrace my (approximate) path in the unlikely event I become lost. Is the onboard GPS on phones adequate for such a purpose? I don't need meter-accuracy, but 10 or 15m accuracy would be nice, along with software that would sample my position every (say) 60 seconds and overlay this on a map that MUST be stored locally on the device. I will be out of cell tower range.
* These devices can carry a lot of data, but this seems dangerous on a device that may be lost or stolen. I know there can be a numeric code to unlock the device, but that provides no real security in practice. Is it possible for me to use encryption at the block level with a filesystem on an SD card? Conceptually, I want to mount that card through an encrypted loopback device, with a timeout that will unmount it after a period of inactivity. Possible?
* Specific phones: I liked the LG2X, but it seems many people have big problems with it. I liked the Sensation, but it has a locked bootloader -> nonstarter. So I'm looking at the Mytouch 4G. How big a limitation is GSM in practice, within the continental US?
* When 802.11 is available, will I be able to use my existing VOIP provider instead of a cell network to make voice calls?

Yes unlocked GSM devices are able to connect to a compatible carrier / sim card. For instance I have an unlocked GSM from att but i hate contracts and burning a hole in my pocket. So.. i went to best buy and grabbed an h2o sim kit and poppeed. It in VOILA. Service= no contract = more money. Of course there are plenty others. With different. Pre paid plans. That's just one of many i use.
Alot of these devices will work around the world ESPECIALLY an unlocked GSM device. Of course they will have to have the WORLD phone type basebands. To achieve this if traveling the world.
GPS has come along way since eclair, and is getting signifucally better all the time. However this really depends on your device and its hardware/software When you see a phone you like find the oppropriate forum and thread and learn about that device. Here on xda.
As far as security with android its great and getting better and better. They stay up to date with the latest. The biggest RISK/ ONLY common are with an OPEN all wifi access connection. Also The problem lies when someone( the user) puts bad apps or pirate apps and files in the device making it vulnerable.
To keep data safe on your phone can be achieved in a number of ways, to name a couple, numerous locks can be applied on apps files even before the device boots up, there are also apps that will wipe every thing on your device if lost or stolen by using your computer to control it. Also apps that will track your phone so you can find it

CM7 is built AOSP from the ground up. They are in no way or have anything to do with the carrier or its original manufacture. Its totally custom build. Extremely knowledgeable developers who take pride in their work for all of us for free. This is not for your average user. These builds are still in ongoing development and not available for every device. However these builds are very stable for and a daily driver
YES YOU CAN, For VOIP calls, there are apps for that and I've used it for a couple years now, alot of devices can and have already support it, and takes a litle tinkering to get them to work. Now days the Devices coming out have VOIP already ready for setup out of the box. With easy setup

Samsung Galaxy S 2. Is what i recommend. It's truly the best of the best. Along with EVO 3d. And Motorola D3

Well, no, but I don't carry the whole machine around in my pocket, either. Somehow the only thing I really trust to keep my data secure is encryption, but then there's this issue of how long the data stays decrypted. You have to be able to use it, but if you lose the device, no one else should be able to see it.

Yeah, which is why I'd trust it more than the carrier supplied software. I'm pretty much restricting my device choices to ones that CM7 supports, which does rule out several otherwise attractive phones.

YES, Samsung has sent a SGS2 over to an Cm7 dev. To play with. So i assume in do time it will be a supported mainline. I believe he has test builds for it already . I haven't tried them yet with mine yet. I stick with one dev. Phone at a time. My captivate is the Guinea. Pig. Good luck mate.
