HTC US 3G compatible devices - General Questions and Answers

HELP!
I am at my wits end trying to find a US 3G compatible HTC device. I really like the Blackstone, but it seems that it won't do 850/1900 HSDPA frequencies. Does anyone know which HTC devices are compatible with AT&T networks?
I even wrote HTC about the Blackstone. They told me it is compatible on the 850 band, but that's not what the specifications say. I'm so confused. I am an electrical engineer and understand all the technologies, I just don't know which devices are "world" devices. Does anyone out there know?
Am I sentenced to the world of edge with HTC devices because of AT&T network frequencies?
The Touch HD is really cool phone and would love to have it if it does 3G on AT&T.

The Kaiser was one of HTC's last phones to have good tri-band UTMS support; ever since then, it's taken the strategy of releasing N. American and international versions of its phones that have different 3G radios (850/1900 and 900/2100 respectively, but you know that already. ). Once exception is the Fuze, since AT&T wanted it to have 3G roaming, so it has the 2100 band as well as the American ones.
You can find a N. American version of most HTC phones besides the Blackstone, unfortunately. I don't know why, HTC just made a decision that it wouldn't be released over here. Might be because they don't want it to compete with the upcoming Touch Diamond 2, which has a similar set of features.

The site Popular Electronics (I have no personal connection of any kind) advertises for sale a 850 MHz Touch pro

It is for real. Check out the specifications on the main htc website it says exactly the same thing. The Europe/Asia version will work on Verizon, but you won't be able to get WCDMA speeds. The US version has 850/1900 WCDMA, whereas the Europe/Asia version as mentioned on the HTC site has 900/2100. Would be nice if they could make one with all 4 WCDMA's
I have definitely seen some sites that claim the Touch Pro is only Tri-Band, but the HTC site would be the one to go by seeing as they made it an all
WCDMA (3G) is where it differs. All Touch Pro's do NOT have 850mhz WCDMA. You can get service everywhere, but only 3G in areas with 900/2100mhz 3G... AT&T uses 850/1900 for 3G.

No they do not all have it activated, smart guy ....look here at the official Dutch HTC site specs:

And after browsing this forum for weeks now its still not clear to me if the 850mhz band can be activated with just a rom/radio update..... a lot of different opinions in here....

First of all, it is a ROM flash, second, their specs page for english used to say triband too but they changed it to quad band...
I have a friend who works for ATT and just tested the new HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) and said that ATT is planning on releasing them in November, code named "ATT Fusion."
Of course, they claim it's real...

These guys say (of course) they got a few in stock and they sold quickly. These are actually the EUROPE/ASIA version but the rep claims they are Quadband and that 3G works on both AT&T and T-Mobile (US). They are getting more in next week.

The more I read the more I get confused.....are the phones (if as advertised) in the site mentioned on post 14 likely to be working with ATT 3G?
UMTS/HSDPA for 850/900/1900/2100 on Touch Pro
I also keep on hearing this regarding bands on the Touch Pro. Can the UMTS/HSDPA band be activated for 850/900/1900/2100 by just flashing a custom ROM or changing the Radio Version? Please someone answer this....

I live 40 minutes from Chicago and have asked this company about AT&T, Quad Band, and actual prodoct availability.
If they have them in stock, I will drive to their store, insert my AT&T SIM card and see if it will actually work.

Yea...I'm close to these guys too. Actually there are about 5 electronics storefront stores all next door to each other over there on W. Devon in Chicago. I bought my last 4 unlocked GSM phones from that area. Oddly enough, Popular Electronics have NEVER been the first to have any of the phones I wanted. For the past 2 years their usual answer has been "It will be here MONDAY." But "MONDAY" takes months to come!
The guys next door at Overseas Electronics (http://www.welectronics.com/) have always gotten the phones FIRST in that area--including the TyTN II. Even the other store next door to them (http://bargainoffers.com/catalog/default.php) get the hottest GSM phones before Pop Elect. This time though, Overseas say about 3-4 weeks out for the Touch Pro...so I'm really interested to know if Pop Elect actually gets them FOR REAL "by MONDAY" this time.

Is htc mad at At&t?

I am only asking cause i don't see any of the new phones hitting at&t as in not UMTS 850 or UMTS 1900. look on pdadb.net it will list all of the new phones coming out not one from htc supports either one of those bands.... am i going to have to switch over to a steve blow jobs phone. Please someone tell me something i don't know.
They never support it on international versions. They always have a separate US version (when they don't skip the US market entirely, like the Touch HD) with those bands supported.
The Touch Pro 2 and Touch Diamond 2 are coming out in the US, and the TP2 is already confirmed as being on T-Mobile, so let's hope it gets announced for AT&T as well, or at least shows up on T-Mobile unlocked.

they supported it on the htc x7500 and the 8125, 8525, 8925, fuze but no more. i think at&t got a big head with the Iphone and doesn't want to deal with htc so htc said fu*k at&t and thus no longer support UMTS850, UMTS1900

They still support it, as I said. It's just a matter of "international version" vs "US version."
It's likely to protect T-Mobile, AT&T, and whichever Canadian providers use GSM, so less people will import the unbranded international version before they have a chance to release their branded versions.
Since carrier locking can easily be circumvented legally, the only real way to block imports is to not support 3g frequencies in the US. Most people aren't willing to pay $800 for a phone that doesn't support 3g in a lot of places (like the Xperia X1i, which only connects in 3g in about 2/3 of AT&T's coverage area and none of T-Mobile's), or no places (like current HTC phones, which are 2100MHz only).

[Q] US/Europe Commuter 3G Smartphone?

I am planning to upgrade my old/tired/beat-up HTC Prophet handset with something that supports 3G, but although just about all the smartphones I've reviewed are now quad-band GSM, I have yet to find an available Android or WM6 unit that supports high-speed data both in the U.S. (AT&T, 850/1900MHz) and the U.K. (O2, 2100MHz) In other words, I'm looking for quad-band GSM and UMTS 850/1900/2100 and am not interested in an iPhone... for several reasons. It seems that the Google Nexus One came in this configuration at one time but is no longer available.
Any suggestions?

I need to buy a smartphone before the end of June for use in my new life in mainland China, but have ended up with many questions regarding how useful my phone would be if I returned to the U.S.
So China, being civilized like the rest of the world, uses only the 2100 band GSM for its 3G, at least at China Unicom. So as far as I understand, any phone that gets GSM 2100 gets 3G.
The trouble is what happens if I move back to the U.S.? I want a phone that will last for years. Seems like the only game in town is AT&T unless the feds stop the T-Mobile deal. So my phone has to be 850/1900/2100 to get 3G in the U.S., as I understand it. (At&T isn't exactly forthcoming on this on its site, so this is from this forum and other sources.)
My two candidates are the LG Optimus 2X and the Samsung Nexus S. The 2X has 900/1900/2100 3G bands and decent enough hardware that I'm relatively futureproof gear-wise. The Nexus S has -- at least where I live currently -- 900, 1700 and 2100 3G bands, and Google's stamp of approval means I'm futureproof on the software side.
My confusion comes from what all these numbers mean. Does my phone has to be just one of these bands to get 3G? Two of them? Or is all this a misnomer, and 1900/2100 is in fact its own unique band? Why do I need all these extra bands when most countries have just 2100? What am I missing if I go LG 2X and miss the 850 band?
Does having only two and not all three on my phone mean I would get 3G data only some of the time? Or must I meet all these criteria? Is one upload and one download?
And why is U.S. telecom so screwed up while the rest of the world seems to do just fine? (OK that one may be more of a rant than a question)
There are phones that hit on all the bands, but Motorola is closed software-wise and I don't want that, while Samsung Galaxy S II and iPhone 4 are both too expensive for me.
I'm clearly slow, and not an expert, but if anyone has time to educate me I would much appreciate it.
Hmm, this site suggests AT&T works on either 850 OR 1900. In other words, you need just one or the other on your phone, but not both:

The bands are frequency ranges, so it means that the phone will broadcast/receive on the 850 MHZ range, or 1900 MHZ range. Don't know if this helps, but that is what they are talking about.

I think you will find www.pdadb.net to be your new friend. So bottom line is if you want AT&T 3G you need 850/1900, Australia and Canada are the only other places that utilize these bands for their 3G from my knowledge. If you can find a Nexus S that has the North American bands it will do AT&T 3G (it will be the Canadian version). The normal Nexus S state-side is the AWS packed version (AWS = 1700 or T-Mobile 3/4G).
900/2100 are your standard European international 3G spectrum, and well 2100 is pretty much everywhere, even China as you found!
Say you go the AT&T store and ask them for a "World" phone then it is more than likely banded for 2100 in addition to 850/1900!

EDIT: On PDADB.net you will want to look for UMTS850, UMTS1900, UMTS2100. IF it says GSM850, 1900, etc. that means it will do 2G on those bands but not pick up 3G on them!

Where I live the i9020a hasn't appeared, and why should it? It's needed only in America. Meanwhile, the LG Optimus 2X is the same price here as the Nexus S, which is very very tempting.
Still, I may hold out until the i9020a or the white version of the Nexus S appears, and decide accordingly.

AT&T HTC One X not One XL

I am confused as I am sure a lot of others are but the HTC One XL is not the AT&T version. The AT&T version is still called the HTC One X. As shown on GSMArena and on the HTC Site. The HTC One X with Tegra(International-non LTE), The HTC One XL SnapDragon(International-LTE) and The HTC AT&T One X.

sans bands, the HTC One X on AT&T and the HTC One XL International are the same device. hardware, and software wise, thus, for development purposes have been lumped into the same category.
I'm not 100% how radios work though, so we may need a separate AT&T forum for AT&T development, in the case that radios are hard wired to accept only certain bands. I assume that the radios can be attenuated to receive different signal however.
Anyone, please correct me if I'm wrong.
This will serve as the home for both the One XL (international Snapdragon S4 device) and AT&T One X. They are largely the same, although we'll need to switch out radios and such for different carriers. It should be very easy.

Your post sounds as correct as what Ive been led to believe. The only difference is the radios for the different bands, which should be easy enough to swap around. All other development should be the exact same. Even though AT&T is calling their phone the One X, its essentially the One XL.

Not only is it essentially the One XL, it is the One XL. Both have codename Evita in the bootloader.
It's like the Desire HD and Inspire 4G. You should be able to swap radios in S-OFF, but you will likely get poorer reception as AT&T will have custom tweaks on the radio files for their network, that will not be in international radio images.
Slightly confusing, it's somewhat hard to discern bands with HTC. I know i did a lot of searching to see if the HTC Raider [Rogers] had AWS so it could be used on Wind/Mobilicity. On the Box it says LTE 1700/2100 which was a toss up as to if it would also fall under AWS. After much deliberation and searching it concluded that no it did not, thus me buying the Amaze 4G, which was a sure thing.
For all these models, im going to assume Rogers is going to get the AT&T Version? Looking at the speccs am I right to assume it only has the 2100 freq and not AWS? Or am I totally off and it has full fledged AWS?.
Edit: Upon further review both bands are on there for HSDPA. Lets pray that is in the final product.
I got to play with the HTC One S prototype the other day via my stores HTC rep. It's fluid and the new camera system is just fantastic. It's ultra slim and looks great. It'd look even better in white, but all he had was a grey one.

AT&T is getting the One XL. Here are the bands from the HTC Asia spec page. It won't support AWS and only supports the 700MHz spectrum via LTE.

Same thing. The One XL and AT&T One X have different supported radio bands, but they will run the same radio firmware if S-OFF. No more, no less.
Both the One XL and the AT&T One X have codename Evita, which means HTC considers both to be identical for development, and as such we should too.

So, as you can see, the Rogers unit will also simply be called the ONE X, even though it's LTE, and it will operate on LTE frequencies 700/1700. Although it does not specifically state 2100 on the Rogers site, this frequency is usually used for uploading and NOT downloading. The download frequencies are often the ones that people want to see.

Addendum: I should be getting my Rogers unit (#2 on the list in Canada for their pre-orders), either tomorrow or Thursday. Rogers generally starts shipping their pre-order units 1-2 days before they officially go on sale, which appears to be this Friday, April 20.
Since they are the same hardware the modem/radio's can be swapped if we get s-off so you can effectively use the international on ATT or T-Mobile and have 32gigs vs 16 and FM tuner. The AT&T version will have support for AWS and 2100mhz. This is stated on the US HTC One X page and Gsmarena.

They are not the same as one the AT&T version is 16gigs and has no FM tuner. So, as I have stated, if it is unlocked and can get s-off we can then put the radio from the AT&T version into the unlocked international version and have 32gigs, FM Tuner and it will then work on AT&T or T-Mobile.

So, as you can see, the Rogers unit will also simply be called the ONE X, even though it's LTE, and it will operate on LTE frequencies 700/1700.

The link I posted from HTC Asia lists the same LTE bands for AT&T's One XL (B4=1700, B17=700). AT&T's referring to it as the "One X" and dropping the "L" also. It also mentions HSPA 2100.

The AT&T model is as follows

From this we can say that unlocked it will work with on T-Mobile's 4G network. This is confirmed by the bands being on the phone but default.

I know for sure that:
1. Putting an HTC One XL/AT&T One X radio image onto an HTC One X will brick your phone, S-OFF or not.
2. The international unlocked variant only supports running on AT&T, T-Mobile uses AWS and so as such only EDGE will work with the international variant on T-Mobile USA.
3. Software will not magically make it possible for you to gain an LTE chipset and the associated radio hardware. Read more. Radio images are mostly pointless to change in the first place and I would strongly suggest to stay with your carrier's radio images as they will have tweaked the radio firmware to best work on their network.

This conflicts with the HTC Asia site which lists the AT&T phone's WCDMA bands as 850/1900/2100 MHz. And when you think about it, why would AT&T want to deploy a device that could so easily be used on a competitor’s network? The T-Mobile G2X was documented as being quad-band and when it shipped it wasn't. Someone needs to test the AT&T One X on T-Mobile before declaring victory. Everyone thought the same thing about the G-Note and it too used a Qualcomm chip. This is what Engadget had to say.

There was a hack found but the signal is weak and it drains the battery faster than stock. So it might be possible to hack the One X if it doesn't work out-of-the-box.

1. This is untrue, the chipset is the same and only radio is different so with s-off this is possible.
2. This is obvious without the radio swap as i have already stated.
3. This international One XL is already LTE capable, so not sure what you are referring too, maybe you should read up a little more. Example, T-Mobile SGS2 and ATT SkyRocket. So again, maybe read up a little more.

Lets remember, the HTC Asia site is showing the international S4 version of the One X not the AT&T version. The AT&T version is on the HTC US page AT&T branded, as i have posted by link a few times. It clearly states it will carry AWS bands. This is an HTC site so I don't think to doubt it.

Did you look at the HTC Asia link for the One XL? It specifically breaks out AT&T (by name) and Asia/Australia listing the bands for both. Since they're both official sites maintained by HTC one of them is wrong. Until the phone comes out and is in people's hands we won't know which one.
I agree, it is all nothing but speculation and it's all we can do until the phone comes out. Right now all we can do is hope and wish.
