Hi all,
I recently bought my HTC Polaris. It's the first wireless device I have, so I also bought a WiFi router to test it. I do not have any previous experience with WiFi on WinMobile, so the problems I am having could just be due to my newbie-ness...
I initially set my WLan router to WPA-PSK. I was able to get my Polaris connected, but at random times and repeatedly the device would stop receiving data (using IE, Google Maps...) with no apparent reasons. The wlan was still shown as connected in . At other times, it was unbearably slow. Sometimes it was difficult to reconnect after that.
Now I set my router to unprotected WLan, just for the sake of test. The connection with my Polaris seems more stable. I will keep testing.
In both situations there is something that puzzles me. In Settings-Connections-Wireless Lan, Main tab, it shows:
Tx speed = 54 Mbps
Rx speed = 1 Mbps
Also in the Advanced tab, the status is always shown as "Associated to the network" ("Associato alla rete"). I never saw "Connected to the network" ("Connesso alla rete") here.
Is this right? Did anyone else experience problems with the Polaris WLan? Is it possible that it works ok with no encryption, and doesn't with WPA? Please help!
*update*: while I was typing I was looking closely at the Rx speed. It seems to jump anywhere from 1 to 54 Mbps (but mostly stays at 1). I did not move the Polaris during this test. The signal strenght is good. The WLan adapter of my PC (where I'm typing looking at my Polaris screen) shows it as "excellent" and the connection pc-router is absolutely fast and stable.
I have no clue of what it can be.

WLAN Problems
This may not be related but I am managing to use a Netgear Router with WEP, however I do experience a lot of drop outs but more importantly I can't get any connections with the phone unless the battery saver setting is set for max performance. The phone also gets quite warm after 15 minutes operation on this setting.

as enterpryse has suggested you could go to settings>connections> wireless Lan> Power mode and move the cursor to best performance.
let me know if anything changes.

I'd say this is the best bet too.
But if you still having trouble try to reconfig your router allowing basically anyone regardless of topology to connect with it. And try using your pc simultaneously to see if it’s the router.
It could also be certain pages that you browse or maybe you router is updating too frequently I had that problem the other day because but kept updating my router for me.
And how long does you device take before it get quite hot? would i be out of line if i said maybe its because you're insulating the device with your hand? (I know the device needs to be held lol but that might be the only answer to your problem unless it’s an excessive heat problem then I would consider contacting HTC / the battery manufacturer / processor manufacturer)
Well, I'll be...
I kept trying to duplicate the problem. I set my WiFi router back to WPA as it was before when I was getting problems. Same PSK.
But after the first bad experiences (and my previous post), no more problems. The Rx speed is usually 42 to 48 Mbps now. It looks like this was the indicator that something was wrong in my first attempts, when I always got Rx=1. At 42 or more, everyting goes fast: Opera, Fast GPS, Google Maps... And I did not experience any more connection drops, data flow hangs, or slowness in connecting to the WLan.
The WLan router was already working fine, since I was already connected to it with my pc. I cannot explain why it didn't almost work and it's working fine now. The only thing I changed was the WLan channel. Could this be an explanation?

Of course, are there any other wlans around you? If they are on the same channel your router goes down with the speed till a stable connection is established.
Even if you have other wireless device e.x mouse, headset, keyboard. They often transmit on the 2,4GHz band an interfere with wlans.
Can't even load wireless mode!
I've just received my Touch Cruise and have started setting things up. I'm a previous owner of the Hermes so I know my way around the device. Or so I thought...
Using Comm Manager to start up wireless lan, when I click on the button, it thinks for a while but doesn't load up WLAN. The button stays in the "off" setting. Tried pressing a few times, no luck.
Tried switching off all other connection types and just switching on WLAN - still doesn't work. Tried using the hotlink via "Wireless LAN" icon through settings/connections to turn WLAN on. Still no luck. Resetting makes no difference.
Phone is otherwise working brilliantly. Looks like a driver issue, as I had a similar problem from time to time on the Hermes with Black ROM. Any ideas on what else I could try?
le_paulo
"Resetting makes no difference."
Did u do a soft or hard reset?
@Jackster - both soft and hard reset tried. No difference. But after the hard reset I re-installed Goodlink which threw up an error message "Communication port WIFI is locked down". Which suggests to me that WLAN is visible but access has been restricted somehow.
The question is why (??) and how to undo it...
Nothing a cooked firmware can't fix
Meantime, if anyone knows registry settings I should check to do some basic diagnostics, I'd appreciate it.

I got the same problem. I changed the connection settings of ActiveSync to
allow wireless connections when connected to a desktop computer.
Maybe this will fix your problem.

Same problem here. Tx = 54mbit Rx = 1 mbit. Sometimes it works ok (with Rx 24-54mbit) but most of time there are huge drops so i cant use wlan at all.
My Nokia N95 works excellent at the same settings with same router.
My polaris wlan battery is set to "Max Performance".
Any clue?
weird
This is the second XDA Orbit 2 (Polaris) I've had in a week. I returned the first one because of WLAN problems. Exactly the same with this one.
I have a Netgear DG834GT, WPA-PSK encryption set to 'auto 108mbps' on channel 6. As other posters here, tried no encryption, changing channels, g only, g & b, as well as all the other suggestions on here. All I got was Rx=1, screen icon showing connected and no web access etc.
Then I noticed that my Orbit 2 mac address appeared on the Wireless Station Access list in my router wireless settings. I clicked on the Add button to add my XDA to the Trusted Wireless Station list (but Access Control was NOT switched on) and EUREKA, it started working, but not very reliably. Surely this shouldn't be necessary. I have had an XDA Orbit for a year with absolutely no problems, so I know my around the new one. There must be a problem with the Orbit 2 - surely we can't all be wrong?
Hi,
Is it at all possible to share my smartphone/pocket pc wifi connection over BT?
The only threads I've seen relate to sharing cellular over Wifi (like turning your phone into an access point - not quite what I'm looking for
Any help would be much appreciated, thanks

I'm looking for the same thing, i think...
I want to share a internet connection like this:
wifi AP ----wlan----> htc touch diamond ----bluetooth----> PC
Is it possible?
Tnx
im too looking for this, I have a laptop with bluetooth but without wifi.
Anyone found anything?
Sharing Internet on Windows Mobile device, with BT clients
I am looking for this as well. I have a laptop with no WiFi, but with BT, and a WM6 HP 211 iPaq. I would like to connect the iPaq to the Internet using WiFi (easily done), then share the Internet connection through Bluetooth, with my WinXP SP2 PC.
I have paired the devices. For example, I can do ActiveSync synchronization via BT between my PC and the iPaq.
"Netwok Access" connection via BT between iPaq and PC seems OK as well.
Still, when I go to "Internet Sharing" on the iPaq, the "PC Connection" field shows only "USB", it does not show "BT PAN".
Can anyone help? many thanks in advance
Gail
WMWifiRouter can do Wi-Fi to USB, but not BT at this time. It is coming up, though.
It is meant for PocketPC though, though it can work on Smartphone the experience is not as good.
could be useful as a kind of repeater
Ive been looking for an app to turn HTC Fuze into a Wi-Fi repeater, but I have bluetooth on my laptop so this would in effect be a signal repeater for me. The bottleneck from wifi to bluetooth would be pretty heavy though Im sure.
ICS Control
I discovered an app that seems to be able to do what you are asking for and most every other network sharing combo you can imagine. Its called ICS Control. It would be great to have a repeater app.
Bluetooth connectivity drops when WLAN is on
Hi guys
I have an iPaq 210 that I'd like to use as a WiFi card for an WinXP SP2 PC.
Here's my problem, which often happens (not always):
1. I turn on Bluetooth on the iPaq
2. I connect the PC to the iPaq using the "Explore my Bluetooth Places" wizard, then "Connect". It says "connected". Then on the XP "Network Connections" window, it says "acquiring network address", and shortly after: "connected". PC's IP address: 192.168.1.125, default gateway (the iPaq): 192.168.1.6. In fact, I've setup this static IP address on the iPaq using the ICScontrol utility. Both computers see each other and ping works both ways. In other words, BT PAN is up and working.
3. Here's the problem: I then turn on the WLAN (Wi-Fi). When the WiFi connects, ping stops working. Then I can't get to the Internet from the PC using the iPaq. "Network connections" still says: "connected" on the BT PAN network.
When I disconnect the WLAN, BT ping starts working again.
What to do?
TIA
Gail
dont really know how to fix this
Re: Bluetooth connectivity drops when WLAN is on
Can this point the way? http://support.microsoft.com/kb/972305 ?
The problem is, that fix is for the system builder. Can someone suggest a registry setup or anything else?
damn, looking exactly for this
wanna use my touch hd with a bluetooth only netbook
hope someone can do it
btw, wmwifirouter seems the closest to do it
can do 3g to bt, but wifi only to usb
[]s
D2G wlan0 - bnep0
On the topic of reverse tether heRe
Ubuntu netbook and Droid 2 Global
Yes the 3g connection works, turn on wifi and
it seems to fall apart. I think there might be
some ip conflicts or I could use a bridge adapter
or something on my droid phone that is configurable,
maybe like br0 for an interface name.
sounds good to me.
what exactly happens when wifi is turned on
ifdown ppp0 ?
ifup tiwlan0 ?
thats exactly what appears to happen first ppp0 there and tiwlan0 not then, touch icon and run ifconfig -a again and it is now the opposite. All ifb interfaces unchanged..
both bnep0 and tiwlan0 on same subnet and have different ip, but tiwlan0 gets dhcp and bnep0 I believe is static.. A routing table could help.
Do I need to add new modules? can this be configured?
My TouchPro can connect normally to unsecured wifi networks, but with WPA encrypted ones, it can only connect for the first time, after that it can not.
At home I have a wireless router/ADSL modem (Zoom X6) that is connected to my PC by cable, all my phones and laptops connect to internet via wifi. While other phones (1G iPhone) and laptops always connect successfully, the TP only connected once and then cannot or unable connect to the WPA security-enabled wireless network (although it's able to scan and detect the availability of the Wifi network). I tried to reset the router settings, even update router firmware, but no luck, it's still unable connect. I also tried with my office secured wifi network and I had the same problem.
Yesterday, I had to hardreset my TP and tried to connect once again, but problem was repeated, connected only once and after that, unable. Note that my previous PPC (TMobile Ameo WM5) didn't have any problem with the same wifi router and the same wifi settings (as follow).
My TP wifi settings:
Network Name: MyNetwork
Connects To: The Internet
Uncheck "This is a hidden network"
Next step:
Authentification: WPA-PSK
Data Encryption: TKIP
Greyed Out: The key is automatically provided
Network Key:************** (my pass)
Greyed Out: Key Index: 1
Next,
Checked "Use IEEE 802.1x network access control" but greyed (I can't change this)
Anybody know the solution for this issue?
Thanks and very appreciated for any help.
i experienced similar problems with my old p4350 but not yet with the TP...
no solution, sorry. but im quite unhappy that this issue still exists...
Any suggestion, pls.
yeah.. quite sucky.. I though the WiFi 'broke'.. but i was able to connect to a WEP site.. I think its something to do with WPA.
I never had this problem with my Diamond. The firmware on Diamond isso much more stable compared to Touch Pro..
I set everything to WEP and my key is open instead of shared, and now it works fine.
I had issues at my dad's, who has no encryption, and also there, when I set the key to open io shared, I got connection. (even though there is no key
anyway, it looks like that is the bug (at least in my device)
I have exactly same settings and same problem... but I want to use this encrypted connection since in future I will have to connect also in other places where I need it for sure.
Any help here?
I have similar promblem with my Hermes before.
My wireless router is running "Turbo-G" mode, my Hermes can't connect it with Turbo-G mode On.
After I change the wirless mode from Turbo-G to "g/b", my Hermes can connect it without any problem.
I tryed that and does not work...
strange is that is was working in the past and on router I did no changes but on TP I installed just some apps which should not affect this...
Only what could affect is Advanced config which I installed...
So where else can be problem?
How can I troubleshoot this?
Signal kvality is good but still keeps dropping and does not obtain IP from router.
mine works fine...not that that helps you in any way
I found the solution: set router to unsecured and use MAC filter. But that is only a tip, because my TP still can not connect with any other secured wifi.
I had same problem and looks like I found the bug in Advanced Config 3.2
There is in Network -> WPA auth... was enabled and I put Disabled (now I can use WPA auth anyway... before it just could not connect)
And next Wi-Fi delay after boot: 0 (when I changed to other number than I got problem that I could not even see any AP as I could see before and only network card settings was shown)
Try to play with other settings and you will see... I had also errors with device.exe after reboot... but now it all works as it should.
Just post here if it helps you also so we can notify creator of Advanced Config...

You are merely restricting people from connecting to your router.. without encryption, you are sending unsecure packets all over..
Have you tried using AES encryption on your device instead of TKIP? I only mention this because TKIP is the only one I haven't tried. All other methods of connectivity work fine for me with the TP.
I tried the PT using unsecured routers, WEP and WPA and all of them worked fine with stable connectivity.
The routers I have tried (without any problems) so far are:
1. Linksys WRT-54G running Tomato firmware
2. Linksys WRT-54G running DD-WRT firmware
3. D-Link DIR-655 running latest firmware
I tired open, WEP and WPA1+2 on all of the above routers and the TP responded with zero issues...
I am not using a custom ROM.
I hope this helps in some miniscule way.
Good luck.

I was about to say the same thing...
Not having any issues with my girlfriends WPA secured router. It's on WPA2-PSK and AES encryption. Enter key first time (case sensitive!!), and of you go... Connecting without trouble ever since
hmm..Funny mine still can't connect to my home WPA2, AES or TKIP.. I'm on the Buffalo Tomato firmware..
WIFI not connecting
This solution worked for me!! Excellent. This was a right pain!

I've got the sollution, everybody on this forum probably has advance config installed, the program sets some default value's of it's own, set the WPA authentication under network in the advance config program to disabled and it will work again. Anyways, that worked for me
I've removed WiFi settings and then I edited settings again. It works now
Raphael Wifi problems
I bought this Fuze to replace my trusty Dash since I broke the antenna on my Dash. I'm running NRG Magic, but have tried other NATF and other ROMs as well, I cannot get this phone to connect to my wifi network I'm using WPA2-PSK but have disabled security for testing. My Dash and my laptop connect immediately with no problems. If I cannot get wifi going on this Fuze I'm afraid I'll have to put it on Ebay and try the Iphone, which people seem to love.
The Fuze did connect once, and it was WPA2-PSK at the time, I don't remember what ROM I was using at the time probably an NRG flavor, but Ihave had _no_ luck since.
Should I flash to 'official' ROM? Honestly I'm getting tired of playing with this thing I don't have the time.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Marc
I may have found something
Check your time zone/daylight savings settings on your router. Phone and router time must be in sync.
Hello,
I could'nt find anything usind forum search regarding this topic, so I create a new one:
I am looking for a way to estalish an WLAN connection automaticly when a program wants to access the internet instead of establishing a modem/WAP/GPRS connection.
The idea: Some Programs like Satelite Update have an option "autoupdate every day at 4 am" or the option "check for new messages every hour" in Messaging.
If marked. those programs are trying to set up a modem connection configured in Settings/connections/Connections
Of course I disabled those (together with all autoconnect options inside those programs) so no program could dial out over an expensive Phone line, because I have everywhere free access to WLAN (at home, work,...).
But it would be nice to use those autoconnect features over WLAN, e.g. every morning before I wake up, the device downloads satelite update data and all email messages by enabling wlan on demand und disabling wlan after downloding everything.
Is there any way to configure a wm6 device to enable and use WLAN instead of a modem connection? Unter Connections -> New Connection there ist no WLAN available (of course there are just modem devices including bluetooth modem option).
Is there any 3rd party Software or trick? E.g. is there some kind of virtual modem that trigers WLAN instead of connecting oder GSM Module...?
best,
Sunny
strange.. the best forum for WindowsMobile Devices and noone knows a trick or software.
Well, seems it is really not possible... what a shame that MS didn't think at this possibility - especially in this modern age where WLAN ist nearly everywhere
best,
Sunny
Even though WiFi is up and running, my phone keeps getting connected via GPRS automatically. Although most programs use the WiFi connection, sometimes they switch over to GPRS. Also, when I reboot the phone, WiFi gets deactivated and GPRS kicks in automatically. Of course, this is a bad thing since my carrier allows only 1MB of downstream on GPRS.
The other problem is that WiFi keeps getting disconnected after a period of inactivity. Now I don't mind this happening as it saves battery, but I don't want this to happen when I'm at a place having access to a power source. Strictly speaking, I could live with the WiFi getting disconnected, but the irritating thing is that sometimes it just doesn't reconnect - instead, a baloon pops up informing me of all other wireless networks available - my network isn't listed! Then after a few more minutes, it automagically connects to my network. Sometimes, to get the wifi to connect, all I have to do is click on the "G" icon (I'm about to open the wireless manager) and the WiFi starts to connect! Just w.t.h is going on here? :S
Now the common "solution" for the GPRS problem that's floating around the net is to use a program that disables the GPRS connection, like Modaco NoData or such, but I'm looking for a more permanent solution (regtweak?) by which:
1) GPRS is never connected and if connected, never used by any program IF there's an active WiFi connection
2) When the phone (re)boots, WiFi should be activated and if any "known" networks are found, should connect to it automatically, else it should be deactivated
3) Perhaps WiFi/GPRS can be enabled/disabled based on the cellid/GPS and/or time schedules? Now I know of programs that can do this, but I'm looking for something extremly light, preferably which doesn't have a GUI and/or runs as a service and can be configured by xml/ini/reg (or maybe have a seperate GUI for settings)
Any ideas people?
Thanks for your time.
Did you ever find a solution for this? I'm in the same boat and would like to know as well. Thx.
Yeah, I changed phones. Didn't face this issue on a Diamond and a Hermes.
got the same problem with my tg01 keeps dropping wifi and keeps connecting to gprs when wifi is on
