strange question here,
now when u go to a different country and use your internet connection u'll get charged at roaming rates....
BUT if u pick up a WIFI connection i always thought that since ur using a different connection u wont get charged....however was told by UK-Tmobile that u would get charged.
have i lost the plot?
T-Mobile must have misunderstood your question. Your WiFi has nothing to do with there network. However, most WiFi hotspots are not free of charge
but am i rite in thinking if u connect to a wifi u wont get charged... i'll have to correct T-Mobile
i know hotspots u have to sign up for but thats a monthly charge not usage.

Hi i have mobile wifi router installed on my phone (came with duttys rom) and i was wondering if using it my network could tell and charge me extra?
I have an unlimited data plan but i know I could pay an extra £10 and then my phone could be used as a mobile boradband device, does this mean that if i try to use the mobile wifi router program that my carrier would be able to tell and block it or charge me extra?
Also is there a way to share the phone connection with a pc without using wifi and without having to buy the networks extra mobile boradband package because I will almost never use it but its good to know i have the option if i go on holiday or whatever, maybe i want to prows the web in the garden soemthing like that
no wifi works even if you don't have a sim card in the phone
just like pda's with wifi and no phone
just like your laptop connecting with wifi to the router
just like your desktop connecting with wifi or cable to the router
no its not that, mobile wifi router converts your phone into a router so your laptop/whatever can connect to it and use its data connection to connect to the internet, I was just wondering if doing this the network can tell and then charge me extra as they usually charge for using your phone as an internet access point
the connection from the phone to the laptop or computer is free anything wifi
the cost to go onto internet will however depend on your satat rates, just to be sure id ask your operator
Hi thanks for trying to help, but thats not what I was asking. I know wifi connections are free what I was asking is if my operator will be able to tell the difference between my phone using its data connection and my laptop using my phones data connection.
The reason I ask is that I have unlimited data for my phone.
but
you can pay extra money to upgrade your account to allow your phone to be used as a mobile broadband dongle
but if they can't tell the difference between phone using its data and pc using its data then there is no need to pay the extra money.
is this the case or am i missing something
Depending on your operator, there could be a max of MB's. So it might be 500 MB/month, but also unlimited internet. With that, you are able to use it without any extra costs.
Is it possible to somewhat put up a wifi network on your phone via some program (WiFi Router is one I think) and connect to it and use it ON your phone?
aaah teething
as far as I know they should not be able to detect it
but I could be mistaken
If the usage is large 500MB/month, carrier might suspect unusual activity. teething is paid service with some carriers.
I have a G1 tethered on T-mobile USA. I have talked to customer service. They said they do not support tethering but that it is not illegal. Their solution is to allow a soft cap of 10gb of data service with their unlimited plan and once you reach the cap they throttle the internet speed down from 3g to 2g levels. Not to horrible. I play all my online games with my G1 connection, Counter Strike Source, Perfect World International, Flyff, and download quite a bit of music and usually only reach about 300mb a day which gives me a full month of service before i reach that cap. And at the start of the new month I get reset.
I´m in the same situation.
I´ve got an unlimited data plan, which covers phone/PDA use, but EXCLUDES using the device as a modem for a PC/Laptop (tethering).
I´ve tethered it ocasionally, and it worked.
My carrier didnt charge me extra, nor blocked. BUT i know the risk exists. I´ve tried to research.
What i read is that carrier COULD tell if you are tethering by traffic analysis (one way is looking the user agent of your web pages request, which identifies yor browser), but that this traffic analysys is not practical, and most carriers dont do it....by now.
So of you tether ocasionally, you are safe.....today, ....until carriers perceive there is a number significant enough to make profits,of people tethering under a data plan intented just for phone use, then they can start charging you.

ha nice, well im gonna give it a go anyway and see what happens, its just funny that they specifically advertise to upgrade your account to be able to do this as if they can somehow tell. I dunno what mobile boradband is like in the us but in the uk there advertising it all over the place as if its someting people really need instead of something that is ocasionally useful, apart from in your case its mad how much you do through your phone.

thanks for this, if the only thing they can do to check is by the web requests of your browser surely there is a way to pretend to be opera mobile for example which should receive the full web anyway. Anyway as you say I won;t be using it much if at all so if i do fancy it i think ill just take the risk and see what happens worse they can do is charge me a little extra and i may even be able to avoid that by pleeding ignorance

I don't quite understand this question, you could use the program i mentioned to make your phone into a wifi access point and use its data connection to the internet then anything you like could then connect to it e.g. another phone, psp, ps3 laptop .....
is that what you ment?
I tried to turn on my portable wifi hotspot feature on my USA Tmobile Sensation 4G, connect my laptop and surprisingly it works. (I have the Android Pref Data Plan).
My questions are:
1. Is this truly free? Because I know Tmobile offer their tmobile wifi hotspot service for a fee. I didn't sign up for that but how come mine works?
2. After the phone's display goes off, the phone seems to be asleep and the wifi connection lost. I turned on the "Always on mobile data" but still doesn't help. Is there a way to let the screen goes to sleep but still leaving this wifi hotspot on?
Thanks,

Hey I work for t-mobile so I think I can help haha. The feature will still work fine without addng the mobile hotspot for $15/month but if you use it often or a large amount t-mobile will kindly send you a text or letter in the mail telling you to stop or you will be charged. Hope this helps you
I tether mine sparringly. My wife tethers hers constantly. The above post is correct. Do it repeatedly and you'll receive a notice. Once in a while, you're fine.

Yet another confirmation here. The above posts are 100% correct
Thank you for the replies.
That's great, coz sometimes I need to use my laptop and there is no wifi around.
Does anybody know the answer to my question #2 also?

i could be mistaken but it might be under settings/wireless/wifi settings/advanced/wifi sleep policy
Or if you have your usb cable just plug into the laptop and turn sleep off while charging? Just an ption to get around it.
I'm about to install GTA 3 on my phone. It is a 400+ MB file and I am connected to Wifi.
Cellular data is also on, but I heard that the phone by default uses bandwidth from the Wireless network if both are turned on.
So before I download the files,I want to make sure that my phone isn't eating away precious cellular data.
Worst comes to worst, I can disable cellular data and just use WiFi, but I don't want to resort to that.
Tried searching the issue but couldn't think of keywords that returned viable hits. So I'm asking you smarties.
I use wifi at home and it never uses my mobiles data allowance.
If your very worried get a widget you can simply touch to switch data on or off but in my phone when on wifi it will not use up data allowance.
But be aware that IF you lost wifi reception then with data enabled it would so just check your wifi signals good first

I also have that turned on so that when i am home there is no chance of it using data
ya np buddy
I can confirm my Wifi does NOT eat away at my mobile data.
I use Wifi all the time and have no issues
I would also check to see what your Wi-Fi sleep policy is set to.
Some phones default to the cellular data connection. I always used to cut my cellular connection off before switching to WiFi prior to my transition to unlimited data.
When I'm on wifi, I make sure the mobile connection is off.
usually if you are connected to wifi it will not use your data. Go ahead bro!
Ok can someone tell me does having both wifi AND mobile data/3G enabled at the same time cause more drain on the battery?
Or am I better off leaving only 1 enabled at a time.
Thanks.

yes u are correct..... you phone automatically gives priority to WiFi over mobile data....
if im not mistaken, with some phone u can change this.....
but the reason behind it is that wifi "should" give u higher connection speeds than that of mobile data so it give preference to it

Higher connection speeds and saves battery
Does the iPhone do such thing? (the turning off data while on Wifi)
You put a helluva post together here with some very helpful informations. To all readers : Please share on facebook but by all means let’s get more people read this articles.

thats a yes a no from observation.....
sometimes i have on both but it connects n give preference to the wifi.... but data is still on... its not using mobile data but there is some amount of battery drain....
if u manually turn off ur data however, u might seee a weeee bit improvement in the battery drain...
it jus depends on ur device and what u have running
with my atrix 4g..... with the current rom
i jus leave both on when using wifi but once im not using wifi... i turn it off..... battery drain it jus a tad bit more with both on but not significant....
so id say u cfan leave both enabled.... once out of wifi, switch it off cause its gonna take more battery power searching for wifi signals
The data stays on while WiFi is on but all data traffic if passed through Wifi (if connected) and the data stays on just to keep it "alive" so that when u turn off wifi, or lose wifi signal it can quickly switch to data practically without you noticing any lags. Battery drain is minimum by data if u are connected to wifi and data is on.
Allright. I received a bill for $80 this month for mobile browser/net usage (WTF!?). Now, as far as i know, they shouldn't be charging me. I'm connecting to my home's internet. AKA; the FREAKIN' internet i ALREADY pay for every month. My mobile data is ALWAYS off. I have no need for it. If i see a WiFi hotspot, i connect to it.
I did some research. There's some sort of carrier data packet setting that i can disable, to resolve this problem?
Although i shouldn't HAVE to do this... This shouldn't even happen. I'm not using the internet per my service provider.
I looked in Wireless settings, and couldn't seem to find this setting.
What the hell's going on? Please help... this is beyond ridiculous.
I would make sure you're actually connected to your home internet, this just about never happens.

Or find a new carrier. Sounds ridiculous to me.
If I were you and didn't want to use any of their data, you can call and ask them to block that feature on your line. I did this on some of the lines on our family plan.

well like this happend to my gf. she went to take new contract ( actually she needed the phone) and the sells man invite her for free trial 2gb internet. she take. after a month they sent the bill + 25 euros for data charge. WTF?! she even didnt make a call. just minimum monthly charge. so she went and ask why u send the bill for data use? that smart sells man show something her in computer that she use data with this sim card. then she take out the sim card and through in his table, which was not even broken the security seals the sells man was f**** red face and apologies and says something must be wrong.
so go and be rude and ask explanation for extra data bill. i'm sure if ur data always off, thn they must make MISTAKE!!!!
