hello,
i'am thinking of how to improve fingerfriendly navigation even on today screen, where you have to precisely have to mark the spot. i came up with an idea which i cant do because of lack of programming skills. but i made a picture where you can see my idea.
the idea is, when you touch the screen, a small crosshair will apear, pointing the exact location you want to click. if you want to click, you have to rise and press again the touchpad (same behaviour like laptop touchpads.
if you want click the bottom area, the crosshair swaps to the downside of your fingerpress, so that you can see the crosshair again.
sorry for my bad english, but i hope u get the point of my idea.

Too bad his drawing skills make us think phalic thoughts, but yes, it is a good idea if it can be pulled off... I know my parrents would be more interested in using a phone like ours if there was some way to know where exactly you were clicking...
Would you want the cross hairs to be right under where your finger is, or would you want the application to have your finger PUSH the cross hairs around the screen, so your finger doesn't actually cover the spot the cross hairs would it?
the crosshair has to be visibile all the time a few millimeters over the finger...
and to all the poeple out there, this is not my penis on the picture, its a finger! (my penis is bigger anyway...)

ha ha - I think we all knew it was suppose to be a drawing of a finger but it kind of looks like - Well you know - Kind of funny - but the idea is pretty good.

See the thing is I have been thinking about stylus development a lot lately. The Stylus on my Wizard was fine for the first few months but started to come lose eventually. Now with my new Hermes its all nice and Toight again but I almost feel guilty when I pull it out to use it.
THEN it hit me
Why not go to one of those fancy nail shops and ask the kind lady there to give me a fake nail on my index finger, but shape the tip just like a stylus! Now I know what you are thinking "Dam thats clever, Why didn't I think of that"
Just think you will always have a stylus at hand and it will be much easier to use than any other.
You will of course need to take care when picking your nose as to avoid doing some serious harm to yourself
The thing is people will think your a fruit cake when you try and explain why you have a pointy bit on the end of your finger, but if there are thousands of XDA users who all have "little pointy bits" on the end of the fingers I won't feel so strange.
Hmmm maybe those people are right huh!

Hey, you're not weird .... I was thinking about this some time ago, especially if you use your pda in your car. In the Germany, you'r not allowed to kepp it in your hands while driving.
My idea was some kind of glove or something you can stick on your finger, like accountants use for sorting paper. If you play guitar, you'll know that there's an item especially for fingerpicking (you wear it like a ring) ... maybe this will do if you find one made of plastic, cause i only know them made of steel, waht definitly will kill your screen.

Some one did just that quite a while ago, IIRC there were photos posted at the same time either BA or Uni section - can't find it now though.
Only problem is you can't opperate the reset with your fingernail, and your other half might have something to say about it! - Mike

yes, viewsonic (formerly one of the best monitor manufactures) should have put in a better display. yes, the viewing angle sucks, sorta ..
I mainly work in landscape mode.. When i have the tablet sitting on my lap at lets say probably +30 deg from perpendicular the screen looks, well gritty.. The pixels get a little funny to say the least.. However, this is when the volume buttons are at the top, if i spin the tablet around so the volume buttons are on the bottom, the grit goes away.. it still looks a little washed out, but not too bad .. Added bonus, i'm a lefty and now the menu buttons are near my left thumb.. double win..
All in all, this is what i consider a personal device, do i care that the person 6 feet away can't read my screen due to bad viewing angles, nope not at all..

I agree. I think that if I want to show someone something on it, I would hand it to them to see, or point the darn thing at them.

I understand the beancounters have to keep profitability up... but come on. I don't think I've ever had a bad Viewsonic monitor.
i remember back in the day, when 100lb CRTs made everyone drool, viewsonic owned the market.. They just can't compete now with sooo many other manufactures ..
I am going to a custom painting on my HTC Inspire housing and want to paint on the HTC logo on the back when im finished. Does any one have a stencil logo for HTC that I can paint on it or know of any place that sells cut-out stencils I could order to make it perfectly straight letters? I tried to google it and couldnt find what I am looking for. Any idea's?
I'm new here, but throwing out an idea for you to use. If you have a printer handy, or kinko's or some sort of printing place you can use that.
My idea was to just go to a search engine, type in "htc logo" (without quotes) and print out one of the pictures in grayscale onto a hard piece of paper to give you a better stencil-like canvas. Cut out the letters. Then you have a home-made stencil to use.
Be creative though, because creativity counts and everyone would love to see the what the phone will look like.

Why don't you just make one? There's plenty of HTC logos on the internet.
Print one out the correct size on a laser printer, grab an xacto knife and a ruler, cut out the inside of the letters, crop to ~.5 - .75 in. surrounding rectangle, tape in place and paint away.

If you could have a decal made, you could peel the letters out then youd be left with a negative image that you could use as a mask.

We are talking about software all day long but...how well do you know your device physically speaking? For example I have no idea where, on which sides, are placed variuous antennas! Knowing such things could give us an idea on how to place and manage our devices in order to get better gps signal, wifi signal and stuffs like this. Someone that knows??
Another question is about the screen...It's capacitive, meaning finger only activated. But can we say that is similar to laptop's touchpad? Because on touchpad you can use the negative pole of a battery instead of your finger. And if you use an AA or AAA battery you'll have more precision.
One thing that bothers me on capacitive screens is that it functions only with a certain contact surface between your finger and the screen. And this surface is rather big for drawing - yes I know, O3D it's not made for drawing but still, and for certain games like Link or ConstructX, in which you must see what's under the finger and you must have precision. On this matter : resistive 1 capacitive 0
Do you know any solutionthat can give a 1 mm surface point so I can do things better. I must say that the real principle on which capacitive screen works I don't know it... As far as I can tell... the GPS antenna / in fact I think that this is universal for all GPS, Wifi, Bluetooth, is a little metal cube placed at the upper left corner of the phone, between the USB port and the headphones' jack. So the position has no importance upright or in landscape mode

It can be a good game. It almost never detects my fingers. It is hard to see the particles when I have 2 or 3 fingers on the screen (sometimes one finger). The main screen is hatsto navigate also. It is a good concept, but not executed well enough. Keep updating, I'm sure it will get better.

Yes I know that the menu could be more inutiattive, I will work on it some more.
And I too think it's hard to se the particles when my fingers are on the screen, but I guess the larger the screen, the easier it gets.
I'm currently noticed that on high resolution screens the particles and the player ball becomes small and hard to move so this i'm currently working on.
Other than that all I can say is, get thinnner fingers
